I'd rather my kid make it into an Ivy on academics and not because of lax skills. If his lax skills help- great, but he'll have a great many opportunities if he has more than just his lax going for him. If a kid is retained and doesn't get recruited, do you think the better schools will be interested in him/her? You can look at the positive side, but don't forget the risks as well.
