If the school district in which you live has a cutoff date of September 1st as opposed to December 1st, your freshman child could already be fifteen years old (plus three months) without having been held back.

Your statement is incorrect, uninformed, and capitalized to emphasize your error.

I just did a little research and could not find one LI public school district that had a cutoff earlier than Nov 30 ! Am I still incorrect and uninformed? Just wondering? Just Keeping it real. Think this whole discussion started about a Long Island team holdback. I think we all know what happens outside the Island already.
There are two interspersed threads here - one talking about only Long Island and a second talking about other areas of the country. (This is one reason why registering an account helps with the conversation.)

For a strictly Long Island point of view, December 1st is the cutoff date. That would of course make you correct. Apologies as we took your addition to be off-Island.

No Problem! As always your commentary is valued!
This does bring up another interesting aspect about age and grade. I was not aware that there was as much as a 4 month variation in cutoff age. My son was actually one of the lucky ones that excelled among older kids, but I have seem others suffer because of it.

Without knowing your son's birthday, it's all relative. First off, having a Sept 1 cutoff (MD & others) vs Dec 1 cutoff (LI) is a 3 month difference, not 4. But besides that, some parents may choose to err on the side of reason. For example, let's say Johnny lives in Manhasset and was born September 3, 1998. By LI cutoff he is a h.s. sophomore that graduates in 2016. AND at the youngest end of his class. Now if he lived in MD, he would be in the class of 2017 and would be one of the oldest in his class. Now that's without any repeats which we know MD is notorious for. Just stating the facts (and obvious options) because this subject is getting boring. Do the right thing with your kid whatever that may be and stop complaining that MD has a disadvantage. And not for nothing - you should thank the older kids on your son's teams as they do an awful lot of hard work on the field to get the rest some notice.

Did you know not all schools have Dec 1 cutoff? NYC uses Dec31, and I don't know about every individual LI school district. So 4 mos diff, like I said is correct in many instances. Was that your only point? Because the rest of what you said was silly.
