Stop with the kum-by-ah everybody is friends with everybody. If an older player feels competition from a younger player - why wouldn't the older player not try to use his more developed physical attributes to maintain his edge. What do you think, the upperclassmen are just going to lie down and let these youngsters take their game time without a fight? Please. Yes - the reality is that physical intimidation is still part of the game and these practices and games get unbelievably rough - these boys are incredibly competitive creatures. Once you cross the white lines and are fighting for a position, there are no friendships in practice. Off the field they can say they were sorry. Keep your head in the sand and pretend it isn't so.
