Agree that football on LI is irrelevant. I think the point is that football is the only sport where there is no club or travel. The only forum to play is for your school.
I think colleges should reach out to high school coaches about character, work ethic, academics, PARENTS! However, I doubt they would care about a HS coach's opinion regarding anything on the field. Nor should they, it's their job to evaluate talent and ability.
