Definetly not an “Urban Legend” I work in athletics in the MIAA and we have DQ’d some transfers in multiple sports because they are overage and end up playing against them that season.

When you enroll, at least in the two schools I have worked in parents supply the birthdate of the child. No ID or birth certificate is required. You can put any age you want when you enroll. Proof of age is NOT sent to the MIAA. You are just certifying that they are eligible.
