refs played a huge part on LI success, they were tired and just stopped calling 3 seconds (if they even knew what that was) and other crosschecks. It played a big role in all ages.

I'm not sure why more MD teams don't adopt the backer zone for this reason.

Because it makes it harder to showcase talented defenders for coaches. It will win you games at this level without a doubt, but makes it harder to your defenders to showcase their 1:1 defending skills, lax IQ, etc.

This doesn't mean superstar defenders wont get noticed; it just makes it harder for the next tier to showcase their skills

And in most cases, the superstar is the backer. The format makes it really hard for the other defenders or middies who project to D at next level to stand out since they are rarely playing one on one defense.
