the team hasnt practiced consistently since third grade and the head “coach” makes to maybe two tournaments a year

the talented kids make that team great not some absentee figurehead

If the team “has not practiced consistently since third grade” as you say, how does that make for a good team? Sounds more like individual play, making it a winning team? Half the team sits, so a few individuals can shine? That’s not a great TEAM. Especially in development years. Maybe HS age
