Can you clarify this? A holdback is any kid that should be in the grade that their birthdate dictates. Just because they were held back in kindergarten vs. 7th grade doesn't make them on age. Anyone born before 9/1/2009 is a holdback. Crabs may not have kids that are repeating 7th THIS year but I am imagining they're older than you're claiming. Holdbacks are legal and the norm now, so no shame in it, but just be honest Crabs parent.
But there IS shame in it. It’s parents declaring “my child isn’t good enough academically/physically/athletically so I’m going to have them compete with younger kids where he can be more competitive.”

It’s the most beta move it can think of for people who are doing the thing to make them feel like an alpha. Pathetic! Weak gene pool.

Largely agree but there's a large group of holdback families who are so wealthy that none of this matters. Including our opinion of the matter. in 7 years their kid will be recruited to ride the bench at a D1 school where every man in their family has attended and "played lax" for 100 years, and 4-6 years later, that kid will show up to begin taking over the family company/firm. Nobody will have a student loan, nobody will care what it cost the family, and nobody will care whether the young lawyer / MBA / CPA is 24 or 26 or 27 years old. I'm anti-holdback, but I don't think this is beta at all. It's using resources you have to build the legacy you can. #capitalism

But the first thing I think of with the beta holdback parents you mention, is how they don't like to talk about the kids' birthdays. They will just clam up. Happens on cue. Why be sneaky about it if you're not ashamed of it.
