And to be honest, most parents don’t care about the education, fit of school or who the coach is as long as they can tell their friends that they got a scholarship. They go to where they pay the least. Plain and simple.

You have no idea what you’re sliding about. SPSG started to change when MG took over. Girls from her M&D 2021 team decided to go there to play for her. Only one girl per year at the school gets a free scholarship and it’s not always a lacrosse player. MG has built the program on hard work. Not by throwing money at girls.

They didn’t say they were giving away free scholarships, but if there is a girl MG wants at SPSG you can bet that girl is offered a generous financial aid package.

I agree with the previous poster - you are without a clue as to financial aid policy at SPSG. And the post before that - "most parents' don't care" is the most uninformed and frankly notIntelligent comment I have seen on here in a while. I have talked with literally dozens of families about their decision as to which school is best for their kids. Yes, money is a factor for many. To say they "don't care" is just ridiculous.

Some strong players who are also strong academic students receive offers which include modest merit-based aid, but nobody - really, nobody - gets money just to play sports. One girl at SPSG receives a full tuition scholarship each year - and it is a competitive essay competition, not a lacrosse tryout.

I know of cases in which SP or SPSG offered modest merit aid to a student from a family with capacity to pay full tuition (read: wealth) and the schools were told, "you have to do better - such and such school offered us a free ride."
i know exactly how the financial aid policy works at SPSG, we went through it. MG wanted my daughter and we were offered a very generous package. In the end we choose a different school for a better fit due to logistics.
Hence-the rise of GCS!
thought BR was the rise of GCS.

I'm PP...actually have no clue how they did (WCAC parent). Just know they were one of the first to scrimmage. Curious how both teams looked actually.

Was 10-8 SPSG before subs went in and a 14-8 final. SPSG just deeper than GC but starters about even and was a fun matchup; great preseason prep for both. GC Replacing 10 starters including 3 D1 goalies.

Was 8-3 at half with SPSG subbing liberally starting 15 minutes into the game. 27 girls played for SPSG.

GCS has little to no depth after the 23s graduate.

If you don't think kids have started going to SPSG because of MG I don't know what to tell you. You're completely wrong. She puts a ton of work into training girls and building relationships with them and their families starting from a very young age. Several of her M&D 2021 players decided to come play at SPSG because of her, not because they were given a bunch of money. That was the beginning of building the program as those girls were seniors last year when they won the championship. They made the IAAM semis her second year and finals her third year with a very young team. If 2020 wasn't canceled they would have been one of the top teams in the conference that year as well. Not sure what your issue with MG is but you're way off base.

Based on historical factors, as all pre-season rankings are, from HS sports to the NFL. Once the season starts, current info is used to inform the rankings.

Had the list put McDonogh at #1, you would have said "thanks McD parent."

Brilliant.

An SPSG parent did not post it because my daughter does not go to school there…better to have everyone think you’re a fool than opening your mouth and removing all doubt.

All of the private schools give "need" based scholarships. If they "need" an attacker or a goalie, they give them a "need" based scholarship.

Applying for need based financial aide requires submitting tax returns etc.....to prove a family is eligible for aide. A talented goalie who has wealthy parents would not qualify for financial aide. And, the private schools are offering financial aide to many non- athletes as well.

I know of several very well of athletes that get need based scholarships. There’s nobody from the iaam/miaa policing this. Been happening for years and isn’t go to stop anytime soon. The school that don’t are usually at the bottom on the league.

Whether or not the are "well off" in your eyes or not does not mean they don't qualify for need based scholarships. If they have multiple kids in private school and/or college most families that send kids to the high cost schools get some need based aid. The cutoff income is pretty high to not qualify for aid at those schools.

The higher the family net wealth the lower the aide and in some cases only nominal aide is available or none at all. Agree, all privates offer financial aide to families of athletes and non-athletes.

In the MIAA, need-based financial aid is "endorsed" but not required - schools that provide financial aid for reasons other than need simply need to report aid given:

"e) The Association endorses only need-based financial aid and recommends that assistance to students be granted only on the basis of demonstrated financial need. Any member school that awards financial assistance not based upon determined need to students who participate in Association contest is required annually to submit a disclosure statement of such assistance, detailing both the number of grants and the amount of aid granted, to the Executive Director for inclusion in the Annual Report of the Association."

Prior to the implementation of the above rule, there was a strict prohibition on aid solely for athletics. I'm fairly certain that Poggi led that charge to change the rules towards the end of his time at Gilman or when he started at SFA.

We aren't talking about the MIAA. This is the Girl's High School thread. I'd have no argument with you about the boy's schools skirting the rules on aid. This discussion is around the girl's schools and this kind of stuff just doesn't happen there. Contrary to popular belief.

Exactly. I think most people's definition of "wealthy" and what the income limit is to receive aid from a school like McD and SPSG aren't even close. Especially if you throw in that many families have multiple children in private school and college the income threshold to not receive significant aid is well above $200k.

McD paid $6.5 million in need based aide for the 2020-2021 academic year per their website. I would leave SPSG out of the discussion because McD is in a league of their own in terms of need based aide to students. One can only assume most of the McD aide is allocated for athletes because of their dominance in IAAM sports such as soccer, basketball and lacrosse. McD values Championships - so this is what they do..

I hope every parent on this forum reads the story of Katie Meyer from Stanford.
Please keep in touch with your child. Sports should be fun.
At the end of the day we all have to get a job, pay the bills, support a family, and live life to the fullest.
Don’t make your children live the life you couldn’t… make it about them
God bless

Plus, you gotta lay it all out on the line for the Finance/Admissions departments to all see.
There's a catholic school in Baltimore who hired an alum to work in admissions and that was the year everyone went over to the other school bc "The Mouth Of Towson" now had access to their financials. You would think the school would know better? Bad move.

Does anyone even realize how wonderful of a school

Good game between GCS and Glenelg HS tonight. Starters in the whole game. Good tune up for both teams. GCS pulled out a 10-9 Squeaker. Both teams played great games.
