Hofstra University senior Tommy Voelkel has been named the team captain for the 2017 Pride men's lacrosse team, Hofstra head coach Seth Tierney announced. Voelkel, a native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is entering his fourth season as a defensive midfielder for the Pride. After red-shirting his freshman season in 2014, he has played in all 29 games during the past two seasons.

Last season, Voelkel played in all 15 contests and picked up six ground balls and forced two caused turnovers. He also served as one of four team captains on the 2016 squad. Two seasons ago, Voelkel played in all 14 games, picking up five ground balls and forcing one turnover.

Voelkel was a two-time All-North Carolina third team selection at Chapel Hill High School. He is a finance major at Hofstra.

Hofstra, which is in its second week of preseason practice, will travel to Syracuse, New [lacrosse] on Sunday, January 29 for closed scrimmages against the Orange of Syracuse at 10:00 a.m. and the Dolphins of Le Moyne College at noon.

The Pride begin their 2017 regular season on Saturday, February 18 against Monmouth University at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
