The New [lacrosse] Lizards on Wednesday signed veteran midfielder Joe Walters, who engaged in the Player Movement Policy after three seasons with the Chesapeake Bayhawks. In a separate transaction, the Lizards acquired the Ohio Machine's first-round pick in the 2017 MLL Collegiate Draft (8th overall) and their seventh-round pick (62nd overall) in exchange for the seventh selection in the first round.

Signing Walters, 31, requires New [lacrosse] to compensate Chesapeake with its first-round draft pick, which was acquired from Ohio. The Bayhawks now have the fifth and eighth selections in the first round.

Walters tallied a career-high 50 points (23 goals, 27 assists) in 12 games for Chesapeake last season. It marked his most goals in a single season since he scored 23 goals and two two-point goals in 2009 with Toronto. Over 10 seasons in MLL (109 games), Walters has 210 goals, seven two pointers, 192 assists, 409 points, and 110 ground balls. He won the Steinfeld Trophy in consecutive seasons with Rochester in 2008, when he earned championship MVP honors, and Toronto in 2009. The Rattlers selected the Rochester native with the first-overall pick in the 2006 MLL Collegiate Draft out of the University of Maryland.
