Boys (and girls) lacrosse is considered by the New [lacrosse] State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) to be a three class sport, Class A, Class B and Class C. Each class is driven by the number of students at the High School level. Class A is for high schools with 1050 students and up. Class B is for high schools with at least 650 but not more than 1049 students. Finally, Class C is for high schools with less than 650 students. (Notice that the girls breakpoint for Class B and Class C is 675 students.)

The Conferences are built to define "who plays who" during the regular seasons. Nassau and Suffolk have differed year-on-year in how the Conferences are created. Sometimes they have been created reflecting competitive ability; other seasons, Conferences have been created along Class lines.

The State Championships are always run along Class lines, not Conference lines.

[To help even further and illustrate how the Class structure varies by sport], boys soccer is a five class sport with Class AA, Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class D. The full table will be provided in our next post.]

Corrigan Sports Enterprises announced today the seventh annual Under Armour® All-America Lacrosse Classic will take place on Saturday, June 30th, 2012 at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md. Each year only 88 of the nation’s top boys and girls high school seniors earn the sport’s most prestigious honor.

Last year the boys’ South team emerged victorious for the second time in the event’s history by downing the North squad, 11-9. The girls’ North team won 15-10 by outscoring the South 8-3 in the second half.

A full weekend of events will be highlighted by the All-America boys senior showcase live on ESPNU Saturday evening at 8pm. The girls will face off at 5pm.

The weekend will once again include a ten-region underclassmen event with boys and girls All-Star teams from Baltimore, Long Island, Midwest, New England, New Jersey, Philadelphia, South, Upstate NY and Washington, D.C. and West.

The three-day underclassmen tournament (June 29th – July 1st) will feature the top national lacrosse players from the graduating classes of 2013, 2014 and 2015. Underclassmen tryout dates for each region will be announced next month.

Predictions for the Spring 2012 season : Class A will come down to West Islip and Ward Melville - we will take West Islip in Suffolk to handle all Nassau challengers this year on the rebound.

Class B looks like it will be all Nassau County with Garden City and Manhasset dominating the action - taking Garden City for the crown and defeating the Suffolk Challengers.

Finally, Class C figures to be a toss up all around but we will take Shoreham Wading River. Any comments on these selections?
West Islip is DONE. S.C. should retire. It is going to get Ugly for W.I. over the next few years! This past year is just the beginning.
Preseason winter league games at Walker Park in Hicksville are now planned - some players might be missing, but for those looking to get a preseason dose of outdoor lacrosse, the action starts this weekend!

Some great games for non-conference play in Nassau are being announced this week.

Manhasset will play CSH, Darien (CT), John Jay, Calvert Hall (away), and Chaminade.

Garden City will take on Shoreham Wading River, St. Paul's Duxbury, Syosset, and Ward Melville.

Farmingdale's out of conference schedule is not available yet. Does anyone have their details?
You have to give some love to Smithtown West??? Think it will be a race with the three of them WI and WM and SW.Lots of returning talent. I like Shoreham this year also.

It's funny, people say that every year, and every year somehow they end up in the championship game.
Division 1 lacrosse in Suffolk County is one of the toughest divisions in all of the country!! The top three will be the same WI,WM,SW they always play very competitive games and this year will be no different!
GC and Manhasset are certainly the cream of the crop in B but in any given year I would say that South Side, Wantagh, Lynbrook and now Long Beach have a chance.
You can also add Sachem North to the mix in D1. Very senior heavy college bound players in the line up.

Its true that WI will see a drop this year. We still have some very good players and Scott Craig does a great job of coaching "system" lacrosse. To me Ward Melville looks like the team to beat. Smithtown West will be around as well as Connetquot. Do

2012 Preseason Boys Fab 50 High School Varsity Teams - New [lacrosse] Teams

Source : Preseason Boys Fab 50 Via ESPN/Powerade

St. Anthony's (#3)
St. Anthony's has won the CHSAA title in each of the last three years and with 13 seniors already committed to Division I colleges, the Friars should be the favorite heading into this season. Four seniors are in the ESPNHS 100: No. 11 Tim Stackpole (Army), No. 38 Sean McDonagh (Harvard), No. 41 Brian Sherlock (UNC) and No. 54 Kieran Burke (UNC). The Friars play a tough out-of-state schedule with Darien (Conn.), Delbarton (N.J.) and California power La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.).

Jamesville Dewitt (#6)
Jamesville-DeWitt has allowed double-digits in goals just twice in the last two years. The Red Rams boast the longest active winning streak in the nation at 44 games and return four starters. It could be a different dynamic in 2012 for head coach Jamie Archer with the team returning three of its top four scorers from last year, including Syracuse commit and ESPNHS Top 50 junior Jordan Evans (58 goals, 49 assists). The defense will be young, but the Rams have allowed double-digits in goals just 14 times in Archer's 132 games as head coach.

West Islip (#8)
West Islip was upset in the playoffs last season, but finished 19-1 and returns a talented team in 2012. Six seniors have committed to Division I colleges, including attackers Thomas Moore (Denver) and Brendan Smith (Marquette). Starting goalie Jack Kelly (Brown) also returns. The midfield should be strong with seniors Jon Resse (Yale), Paul Riportella (Marquette) and juniors Ryan Wieczorek (Delaware) and Nick Aponte (Penn State).

Chaminade (#9)
Could this be the year Chaminade breaks through and wins its first CHSAA title since 2008? Twelve Flyers are committed to play Division I lacrosse, including ESPNHS 100 midfielder Greg Rhodes. Overall, eight seniors and four juniors will be playing D-I lacrosse. Defense should be a strength, with goalie Ryan Ricciardelli (Albany) and midfielders Matthew Graham (Michigan), Joe Reilly (Holy Cross), Rhodes and Paul Urbank (Delware) along with defender Brian Porter (Marquette) returning. In addition to its senior class, two juniors from Chaminade made the ESPNHS Top 50 Juniors list: No. 7 Ryan Lukacovic (Virginia) and No. 20 Danny Fowler (Duke).

Garden City (#10)
Garden City reached the Class B final last season and returns five starters. Seven players have already committed to Division I programs, including Warrior 40 alumni Patric Berkery (Pennsylvania) and Justin Guterding (Duke). The Trojans lost three All-Americans on defense, but Virginia commit Dan Marino returns in goal.
Smithtown West (#16)
Smithtown West graduated its leading scorer Kyle Keenan (77 points), but returns seven starters, including seniors Craig Madarasz (Johns Hopkins), James Pannell (Virginia) and Matt Schultz (Stony Brook). The Bulls have 10 players already committed to Division I programs, including two sophomores who have verbally committed to D-I schools: Ryan Keenan (Penn State) and Christian Zawadzki (Maryland). The defense will be young after three starters graduated, but Ryan Adler returns in goal to help provide senior leadership.

Manhasset (#17)
Manhasset allowed just 78 goals (4.1 per game) last season and its defense could be even better this year. Of the four seniors committed to Division I programs, three play defense, including ESPNHS 100 defender Bobby Duvnjak (Harvard). The Indians also boast one of the top face-off men in the nation with ESPNHS 100 No. 79 Ryan Matthews (Johns Hopkins). Matthews' play at the circle should help provide plenty of opportunities for junior Dino LaValle (Brown) at attack. ESPNHS Top 50 junior Patrick Coleman will help anchor the defense along with Duvnjak.

Ward Melville (#22)
Ward Melville returns five starters from last year's 16-2 team. The Patriots boast seven players committed to play college lacrosse, including junior midfielder Jack Bruckner (Duke), senior middie Frank Lucatuorto (Stony Brook) and ESPNHS Top 50 junior Christian Mazzone.

interesting that Syo is #1 and Mass #2 seed in Nassau A and not in the top 50 while Farmingdale is #26 - looks like they went by number of Seniors committed to D1

Joe Lombardi covering Boys High School Varsity for the MSG Varsity Sportsdesk (Channel 14 on Cablevision) named four teams to watch in preseason : St. Anthony's, Chaminade, Ward Melville, and Syosset.

Come next Tuesday, March 20th, the Syosset/Garden City matchup should provide an early indication of where Syosset stands.

It was also reported that St. Anthony's won 16 of 17 faceoffs against Garden City in their Wednesday scrimmage.
Syosset and West Islip scrimmaged the other day. West Islip jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Syosset roared back and the game ended up a 9-9 tie. A sign of things to come, lots of competetive lacrosse.
This clearly spells the demise of WI. They'll be lucky to go .500 this season. They need to start recuiting like SN and Farmingdale.
Some early season notes :

Scrimmages for Wantagh in the next week figure with Hicksville and West Islip - that should form some interesting preseason results.

Parent at the field wrote to us saying that the Syosset/West Islip scrimmage draw was a strong effort for Syosset but West Islip seemed somewhat rusty - we will see how that plays out.

Garden City/St. Anthony's was either even or a one-goal affair depending on your source - either way, both teams played well in their kickoffs op the whole with St. Anthony's getting the better of the first half play and Garden City the second half.

St Anthony's was physically superior, both had good sticks and tactics. This is ony my opinion, one of many I'm sure.

Wantagh easily handled Hicksville - seemed that Hicksville has a very young team this year. Next will be the West Islip scrimmage on Tuesday which will tell us whether Wantagh can challenge Garden City and Manhasset in Nassau.

Attended the Massapequa/Chaminade game - Massapequa had the game under control at 9-6 with 4:00 remaining and the Flyers played in overdrive from there on - like another team. Massapequa's goalie was solid - kept them in the game. Entertaining game for early in the non-conference season.

MSG Varsity to Air Live 121st Woodstick - Garden City vs. Manhasset

MSG Varsity will provide live HD coverage of the 121st Annual Woodstick Classic between Garden City and Manhasset -- the oldest uninterrupted public school lacrosse rivalry in the nation -- live this Saturday, May 5, starting at 4:00 pm (face-off at 4:30 pm) on MSG Varsity, Cablevision's Optimum Channel 14.

The Woodstick Classic features two schools that are among the nation's strongest programs this year as well as powerhouses in the tri-state area. Garden city, currently ranked first in MSG Varsity's Tri-State area poll, trails in all-time wins in the series against Manhasset, currently ranked 11th in the tri-state.

Both schools feature players at the top of the class at their positions. Manhasset defenseman Bobby Duvnjak is a two-time All-American and two-time All-Long Island player who has committed to playing at Harvard next year and was recently dubbed as the "Secretary of Defense" by Newsday. Duvnjak will have his hands full as he tries to keep Garden City's second all-time leading assist man and future Harvard teammate Devin Dwyer in check. Dwyer, who currently leads Nassau County in both points and assists, is expected to break Garden City's all-time assist record within the next game or two.

"The Woodstick Classic is an institution on Long Island-known throughout the country-and we're thrilled to bring the action of this storied rivalry to homes across the tri-state area," said Theresa Chillianis, General Manager, MSG Varsity. "With both teams ranked among the top teams nationally, viewers can expect to see some of the nation's best lacrosse talent on display during this match."

Calling the game for MSG Varsity will be Jimmy Cavallo (play-by-play), Pat McCabe (color analyst) and Kelli Tennant (sideline reporter).

As a starting point, you can use the Calendar option in the Ribbon Bar just above. On the May calendar, we have the day-by-day listing of the section (Nassau/Suffolk), gender, and class playoffs taking place on any given day leading up to the finals on May 30th/31st (depending on your county).

Along the left side of your BOTC screen, we have a content island called "Useful Links". There, you will see a link that will et you to the Section VIII (Nassau) and Section XI (Suffolk) playoff brackets. BOTC will also continue to provide updates as we go through the playoffs.

Curley had three goals and one assist and Will Henderson made 15 saves for ESM, which will play the Sayville-Rocky Point winner in the semifinals Thursday at the higher seed.

This game might have been moved to this evening as it was at the Sayville HS field. Anyone know if that field has lights?

Well there you have it...fighting in school games is tolerated. Officials now have precedence NOT to issue red cards for fighting or yellow cards for leaving the bench area.
Those rules only apply to others.
Syosset's Defense was atrocious, will lose to whomever comes out of Suffolk by 10!

why do you have to have suspensions if the team being eliminated is the aggressor? a few years ago the Sayville kid getting suspended, his team won and he was the aggressor. but if a team is losing to an arch rival and they start the fight just to get a kid suspended for retaliating that is no good.

WI can win if everything goes their way, like they all get on the bus, the bus doesn't break down, they all don't get injured during warmups and the Syosset fans aren't mean to the WI goalie...if all that happens WI can definitely win the game

WI wins this game by 10 as syosset's defense is the worst I've seen in years, besides their goalie. They don't have one decent one on one defender to stop a WI dodge from behing and team D seems to be optional...
As a Pequa fan the Syosset fans weren't too nice but our goalie imploded and quite frankly lost the game for us. However, we rang up 13 goals and didn't shoot the ball particularly well. The Syosset defense was one of the worst we faced all year and I can't see them stopping West Islip in the LIC. Defense wins Championships, in the Nassau final it was our lack of, in the LIC it will be Syosset's inability to, that decides the game.

Current score is 14-4 in the fourth quarter. On the other half of the bracket, Irondequoit is up 6-3 at the end of their third quarter. The biggest surprise is not that Long Island will sweep their semifinal matches - the fact that Section III might well not be represented in the finals of any class this year would be the biggest upset of the season.

Garden City is leading 7-4 with 8:00 remaining in the fourth quarter. Controversy at the game as crowd has the impression that the Irondequoit coach "high-fived" one of his players for a tough hit on Justin Guterding by George Jerman of Irondequoit. This was just about the end of the third quarter with the score at 4-3. Served as a wake-up call for Garden City's entire team.

Funny thing, I thought about this post at some point during WI's tear through the playoffs. Sour grapes. It's the system and culture over there that has them winning.

Goalie Eric Caliendo recorded 17 saves and Dylan Molloy totaled six points on four goals and two assists in the championship game this season. St. Anthony's posted three wins over FAB 50 teams this season, including Delbarton (N.J.) and La Costa Canyon (Calif.). The Friars graduate two of their leading scorers in Sean McDonagh (39 goals, 25 assists) and Brian Sherlock (39, 10), but return Dylan Molloy (26 goals, 23 assists) and Matt Koerner (16, four).
8 (11)Chaminade
Mineola, NY
16-2339Season Complete: Chaminade finished 2012 as CHSAA runners-up after falling to St. Anthony's 8-6. The Flyers reached No. 1 in the FAB 50 during the season and posted six wins over teams in the rankings. Ten seniors are heading to Division I programs, which could impact the Flyers next season. The good news is Chaminade was young this season and will return its two leading scorers: Ryan Lukacovic (34 goals, 28 assists) and Tommy Zenker (33 goals, eight assists). Also returning in 2013 is starting goalie and two-time Warrior 40 selection, Danny Fowler (145 saves). Defender Brian Dunne also returns next season.

Ithaca won three games over FAB 50 teams, which included downing both Liverpool and Fairport in the playoff run to the final. The semifinal win over Fairport avenged Ithaca's only regular season loss and handed Fairport its first loss of the year. Ithaca's season ended with a 12-7 loss to West Islip. The senior class graduates nine players, but 20 juniors are set to return in 2013. Among the underclassmen are Eli Lasda and midfielder Doug Biondi on offense and Luke Mendola on defense.
12 (2)Fairport

Irondequoit had an impressive season, posting three wins over FAB 50 teams, including Duxbury and Jamesville-DeWitt. The Eagles had reached the state semifinals in 2010 and 2011 and much of the talent from those teams will graduate this season. Overall, 15 players are graduating, including Nick Doktor (43 goals, 26 assists), Gunnar Miller (43 goals, 18 assists), Connor Enright (40 goals, 14 assists) and goalie Eric Fischer who recorded 161 saves. Of the returning juniors the midfield will have the most experience with Zach Brimmacomb, Ben Brooks, long stick Payton Miles and Joel Roemer returning.
14 (14)Duxbury
Duxbury, MA
22-2291Duxbury defeated Lincoln-Subury 18-6 in the Massachusetts semifinal meeting. Seamus Connelly, Cam Mullins and Henry Narlee each scored three goals in the victory. The win moves the Dragons into the Division I state championship game against Needham on Wednesday, June 13.
15 (18)Ward Melville
East Setauket, NY
15-4280Season Complete: Jack Bruckner scored three goals and Christian Mazzone scored two in Ward Melville's final game of the season -- a 9-6 loss to West Islip in the Suffolk County Class A final. The Patriots posted one win over a FAB 50 team this season, but its losses were to West Islip (twice), Garden City and Smithtown West. Melville avenged its regular season loss to Smithtown West by ousting them from the county playoffs, which should keep them ahead of the Bulls in the rankings. Seniors John Edmonds (34 goals, 27 assists), John Lucatuorto (20 goals, nine assists) and Mike Rastivo (33 assists, 32 goals) all graduate, but several talented juniors return. Leading scorers Jack Bruckner (38 goals, 30 assists) and Brendan Hegarty (36 goals, nine assists) both return in 2013, as does junior midfielder Christian Mazzone (16 assists, 13 goals).

Three juniors are already committed, including Zeke Morril (Georgetown). Top 2014 graduate Tyler Ruhl (Notre Dame) will also return to lead the Greyhounds attack next season.
17 (19)La Salle
Wyndmoor, PA
18-5272Season Complete: La Salle was a consistent performer in 2012. The PIAA runner-up posted one win over a FAB 50 team this season. Conestoga proved to be the thorn in the Explorers side after dropping two games to the Pioneers this season by a combined four goals. However, 2013 could be their year as Casey Eidenshink (Lehigh) is the lone senior heading to a Division I program. The junior class boasts two Warrior 40 selections in Sean Coleman and Matt Rambo (Maryland). Juniors Stefan Bergman (Michigan) and Jeff Cimbalista (Yale) also return next season. Expect La Salle to be in the running for a Top 15 spot to start the FAB 50 next year.
18 (16)Niskayuna
Niskayuna, NY
20-2263Season Complete: It was a tough end to a successful season for the Warriors -- a 9-6 loss to West Islip in the Class A semifinal. Niskayuna lost just two games this year by a combined four goals. The Warriors defeated Jamesville-DeWitt in April to put the team on FAB 50 voters map early and they remained in the Top 25 since Week 4. The offense averaged 17.5 goals per game while the defense allowed just five on average. Seniors Matt Sexton (Penn State), Tanner MacIvoer will graduate, but the junior class could be even better in 2013. North Carolina commit Luke Goldstock set the single-season school record for points after totaling more than 100 points this season. Junior Lucas Maloney returns at attack along with goalie Evan Quinn.
19 (17)Jamesville Dewitt
Dewitt, NY
16-4258Season Complete: Jamesville-DeWitt's season ended with an 8-5 loss to Irondequoit in the Class B semifinals. Senior McLaren Brady led the team with two goals in the loss. The season started slower than usual for DeWitt, as their 46-game winning streak ended with a loss to Niskayuna on April 7 followed by a loss to Duxbury on April 14. But the Red Rams won nine of their final 10 games and never allowed more than eight goals in any of those games. The team will need to replace senior Deke Burns (56 goals, 36 assists), but the Red Rams' youth in 2012 will turn into experience in 2013. Warrior 40 selection and junior Jordan Evans (39 goals, 32 assists) will return along with Griffin Fiener (47 goals) and Jeff Edwards (19 assists, 17 goals.). The defense, which has been a staple at Jamesville-DeWitt, should be strong with the return of defender Scott Firman and goalie Joe Shapiro (113 saves).
20 (24)Smithtown West
Smithtown, NY
16-2247Season Complete: The Bulls fell to Ward Melville 13-9 in the Suffolk County Class A semifinal to put an end to their 2012 season. Smithtown West posted one win against FAB 50 schools this season -- a 12-6 regular season win over Ward Melville. Four players committed to Division I programs graduate, including leading scorers Matt Schultz (64 goals, 27 assists) and James Pannell (43 goals, 31 assists). Senior goalie Ryan Adler (88 saves) also graduates. The Bulls' underclassmen are talented and sophomore Ryan Keenan (Penn State) may be the highlight after tallying 38 assists and 32 goals this season. Christian Zawadski (Maryland) also returns after scoring 17 goals and adding 14 assists. Sophomore goalie Matt Smidt saw significant time this season and posted 62 saves.
21 (22)Darien
Darien, CT
19-2243Season Complete: The Blue Wave capped a 20-2 season by defeating New Canaan 11-5 in the Class M championship game. Darien won two games over FAB 50 competition this season. Star attacker Case Matheis along with Henry West will both move on to Division I college programs, which leaves two large holes to fill in 2013. The Blue Wave never falls too far out of the Top 25 to start a season so they should be able to reload for another run next year.
22 (20)Episcopal Academy
Newtown Square, PA
18-5231Season Complete: The Churchmen rebounded from a six win season in 2011 by winning 18 games and the Inter-Ac Invitational championship in 2012. Episcopal Academy defeated Haverford School 15-11 in the championship game, posting its first win over the Fords since 2009. Three Division I-bound seniors graduate from a team that posted three wins over teams ranked in the FAB 50, but the Churchmen have a talented junior class with defenders Dante Addona (St. John's) and Kevin Gayhardt (Pennsylvania) along with midfielder Ian Strain (Lehigh) all returning.
23 (21)West Genesee Senior
Camillus, NY
17-2224Season Complete: It was quite a season for the Wildcats. Coach Mike Messere became the all-time leader in wins and finished 2012 with 757 career victories. West Genesee posted one win over current FAB 50 teams, but also posted two wins over Fayetteville-Manlius who is just a few points outside the current ranking. The defense allowed teams to scored more than seven goals only twice this season and recorded two shutouts. Seniors Tim Barber (48 goals, 30 assists) and Matt Schattner (30 goals, 19 assists) both graduate, but three of the team's Top 5 scorers will return in 2013. Juniors Teddy Glesener (24 goals, 10 assists), Ryan St. Croix (23 goals, three assists) and Dan Ginestro (21 goals, 15 assists) will be back to lead the Wildcats next season.
24 (23)Liverpool
Liverpool, NY
18-2219Season Complete: It was a tough way to end the season, falling 18-8 to Ithaca in the state quarterfinal meeting. Senior Nick Kline and Thomas Logan each scored three goals in the loss while junior goalie Dominick Madonna recorded eight saves. It was only the second time this season the Warriors had allowed double-digits in goals, but both occurrences resulted in losses. Liverpool will be hit hard by graduation with six of its leading scorers all moving on. The Warriors will look to build around junior Jamie Kuppel who totaled 25 points on 13 goals and 12 assists in addition to starting junior goalie Madonna who recorded 212 saves this season.
25 (25)Boys Latin
Baltimore, MD
13-7206Season Complete: The Lakers finished the season as MIAA A Conference semifinalists after losing to Calvert Hall 11-10. Boys' Latin posted six wins over FAB 50 teams this season and could be the favorite to win the conference in 2013 and a likely Top 10 team to start the year. Fourteen players from the 2013 and 2014 graduating classes are already committed to Division I programs, including attacker Shack Stanwick (Johns Hopkins).
