@BackOfTheCAGE
This upcoming weekend, June 24th-26th, 2011, is the National Draw Tournament. One of the more discussed elite lacrosse events on the calendar, this year's edition has several interesting matchups planned. We are opening this thread for a discussion on the upcoming matches, forecasts, and results.
In the Varsity Bracket, there are some specific teams and pairings worth reviewing.

Altanta : Long Island Wave 2013
Baltimore : Yellow Jackets 2012 East
Boston : Yellow Jackets 2013 Gold
Chicago : Yellow Jackets 2013 Blue
Dallas : Yellow Jackets 2013 East
Denver : Yellow Jackets 2013 Black, For the Love of the Game
Los Angeles : Yellow Jackets 2012 Gold
New York : Suffolk County Varsity
Philadelphia : Top Guns 2013, Long Island Wave 2012
San Francisco : Yellow Jackets 2013 Green
Washington : Yellow Jackets 2012 Blue

The winners of the Boston, Denver, Palm Springs, and Washington flights receive and automatic bye through the "Sweet Sixteen" round into the Quarter-Finals.

Division Winner Pairings as follows :
  • Altanta vs. Baltimore, Winner Plays Boston
  • Chicago vs. Dallas, Winner Plays Denver
  • Los Angeles vs. New York, Winner Plays Palm Springs
  • Philadelphia vs. San Francisco, Winner Plays Washington
Interesting matchups that could emerge in the quarterfinals include Yellow Jackets 2013 Gold against the 2012 East group. For the Love of the Game against the Yellow Jackets 2013 Black is an interesting group play game with a quarterfinal match against Yellow Jackets 2013 Blue awaiting. The big question is how far the Top Guns 2013 group can go in the bottom bracket pairings crossing through the Yellow Jackets 2012 Blue and some others.
The National Draw Junior Varsity brackets offer some more interesting competition this weekend.

The local teams to watch include these bracket participants:

Albany : Top Guns 2014 Purple
Bozeman : Suffolk County JV, Storm 2013
Durango : Yellow Jackets 2014 Blue
Nashville : Long Island Wave 2014
Peoria : Top Guns 2014 Black
San Diego : Yellow Jackets 2014 Gold
Tucson : Yellow Jackets 2014 Green

While at National Draw. a parent from an unnamed MD girls team, over breakfast told me, that it is an accepted practice that some kids are held back a year in school, so that they can be more competitive????

Example: a girl that is on track (while in early school years, K - 3rd grade) to be a graduate in the year 2014, is held back a school year so that her actual graduation year becomes 2015.

This is done to give a kid a competitive edge, how would someone know to do this?

I find it hard to believe.

I think it sounds absurd, but is that possible??

It is done all the time. In Texas and many other states, it is common practice. That is why Lax (boys and girls) need to go to a cetification of age within the USA lacrosse membership. Once they get into their sophomore year they should do away with the grade level brackets and go with just a HS division for recruiting purposes. It is worse with the boys because of the more physical nature of the rules. There is a bigg difference between a 13 year old boy and an 11 year old boy. In any event the age of the kids needs to be monitored somehow going forward.
I know lots of people on LI who have done the same thing. It's pretty common, especially for boys.

In the soccer world you have to show age, and in AAU basketball too. Lacrosse should follow suit.

I remember my son's lax team, when he was 5th or 6th grade, playing a team where some of the opponents were shaving. No WAY were they the same age.

Top Guns 2013 over STEPS White 2013, 12-9
Yellow Jackets Green 2013 over Garden State 2102Tri-State Black 2012, 6-4

The real shame is that both Long Island Wave 2012 and Top Guns 2013 in the Philadelphia bracket figure to go undefeated but given the four game format in the six team division, these two will not meet each other head-to-head. Expect both teams to try and roll-up the scores in the final match while tightening down on the defensive end. At this point, Long Islald Wave has a huge tie-breaker advantage.

How do they actually do this? do they say to themselves at the kindergarten level, lets hold our kid back so they be be a stronger force on the field throughout their school years? Seems that there needs to be a more credible and responsible reason to hold a kid back in school (academics comes to mind). Are you saying that in some cases we have kids graduation high school at age 19?

Seems like some intervention is needed by the sanctioning bodies of lax.
I think the parents are not solely thinking of strength in athletics, but also academically and socially. Those kids could be a step ahead.

Something to consider is that a 19 or 20 year old college freshman is not going to have the same social experience as a 17 or 18 year old college freshman in the same academic class.

Some states have different cut-off dates for entering school so it may seem some kids are being held back when in reality they were not. That being said they should simplify it in both boys and girls lacrosse and make it year of birth instead of year of graduation making birth certificates checks mandotory.

could not agree more. US lax should have start to have a picture and proof of birth, along with US lax # sent into US lax. Then, they should issue a card back to the player, which in turn, would prove that hte player is of age and there are not older girls on the team. Showing proof before a game takes no more than a minute for each ref to check a team roster. there were some tournys where there were girls that were older playing on teams a year below them to win it.

I have a simpler solution. Players last 4 number of their US Lacrosse ID should be their graduation year (or Birthdate). Then when registering the teams, a tournament director can easily look at the US Lacrosse ID #'s to make sure they are age appropriate. To have refs checking cards at tournaments would be a joke - too slow. The kids are there to play not be part of an administrative process. If coaches get caught putting players who are not age/grade appropriate in games then they should be reported. However, we can't have parents on the sidelines questioning kids ages because of size. That is not fair to the kids.

Refs check player cards at every soccer tournament. It's not a big, time-consuming thing.

again, could not agree more. checking a card before a game is not a big thing. it should take more than a minute, you have 2 refs..each check a team and cards of players. anyone who would object to this make you wonder what they are hiding....the card would have a player picture, us lax #, DOB, grad year. This would allow a player to play for any team. it proof of age. i know people who have asked a player before a game "what age are you" and the kid would honestly answer there age which was older than the team you are playing. people dont mind loosing, they want a FAIR game. I really don't see how anyone would object to this simple process. if you do, why. what's up.
I think the teams should be based solely on childs age and not year of graduation at least at the younger levels. In order to simplify it for everyone they should use year of birth in order to establish teams.
You can debate it all you want. US Lacrosse has said that they are not going to institute a national ID system (although it would be feasible to do and they would make money off of it). There will never be a national standard if the governing body isn't behind it.

You cannot do this because it does not make sense for recruiting. College coaches look at your graduation year. Our team, a graduating year of 2015 has many girls born 1997 and some born 1996. If you were to separate them based on birth year then the 1996 girls would be forced to play with girls graduating 2014. It would be too confusing.

Seems they've figured it out in the soccer world. grin
So you believe that a child who gets held back 2 years should play at her graduation age not her actual age thus rewarding the kids who have parents that abuse the system. That being said this is why I stated "at least at the younger age".As they get older such as high school age that 1-2 year difference in age is not as great physically as it is in the younger age groups.Too confusing for recruitment, then how is it every other sport has a cutoff age level, u15 should mean under 15 not I play with 14 year olds even though I am 16 years old but my parents held me back to gain an advantage.
Soccer's cutoff date in LIJ is August 1. How does that resolve the issue?
They have age levels for youth because they are KIDS and are not being recruited. For HS, you have to go by grade because that is how college coaches need to recruit. In each HS grade, some kids are older, some are younger. That's life - get over it.

I really do not think there are very many girls who have been held back 2 years. That seems pretty extreme.
On my daughters team there is a mix of 9th and tenth graders (some very big) because the cut off is August 1st? Is that fair? Shouldn't all girls born in the same year play together?
I agree the August 1st cut-off day is wonky. The thing is, any cut-off date is somewhat arbitrary. Every school district, for instance, uses different cut-off dates for new kindergartners. I think I could get behind a birth year cut-off.

Regardless of whether the "break date" is January 1st or August 1st, the fact is that soccer maintains through the USYSA a very rigid and well constructed player pass system. In the system, the player is tied to one team within one club for the seasonal year (except for the midseason transfer window). Soccer maintains the August 1st-July 31st seasonal year due to the structure of the State Cups (often, May/June), regionals (June/July), and national championships (end July, just before the start of tne new seasonal year).

Yes, soccer is looking at systems such as the recent proposal from USCS that allows the player pass to be allocated to the associated club rather than binding a player to one team.

Lacrosse is screaming for a similar methodology as a first step to what the USCS has proposed. At very least, a player picture together with a birthdate would be a major step forward as opposed to using simply the honor system in place at this time.

Lacrosse has "grown up" in the last ten years - the US Lacrosse foundation provided needs to grow with the growth of the sport.

Why does anybody care who plays on what team? Isn't this supposed to be about being seen?

Do people really think that parents are holding their kids back so that they have an advantage in girls lacrosse? This would be a 4 or 5 year girls we're talking about. I think some people should lay off the Oliver Stone films...
" Soccer's cutoff date in LIJ is August 1. How does that resolve the issue?"It resolves the issue when a cutoff date for age groups is made in that you will have less then 1 year difference in age betwwen players unless someone elects to play up in age.Using year of birth just simplifies it to me.
Yes being held back 2 years would be extreme .However if your school uses august as a cut-off as I belive many schools in nj and maryland do as opposed to long island where december is used then over a 2 year age difference between players on opposing teams happens more often.
August birthday 1996 child held back 1 year equals 2016 year of graduation for most maryland schools.
October 1998 birthday equals 2016 graduation for most long island kids.
So by a child being held back 1 year makes that child more than 2 years older then many of her competition.Nota level playing field.

AHH you live in LA-La land. One thing is to be seen and another is being fair. there are "clubs" out there that play there teams down age bracket and also have kids who are older playing on a younger team. they do this so they can show how many of there teams WON the tourny's and how great their club is by doing this move. If you think this does not happen....you are in La-La land. If the playing field is equal in all aspects, I think you would see a lot of teams going down and others moving up in the tourny's.

The topic in question involves the creation of audited age groups which are checked via authenticated, centrally-issued passes.

Since you do not care who plays on which team, you should have no issue with age-group brackets being created and player passes being created that prevent a player from playing-down in age level.

Again, the discussion is not about showcasing, but the creation of age validated teams.

One of the things that lacrosse does "well" is the mixing of two age groups in some tournaments to create more balanced competition. This is rarely seen in soccer to its own youth development detriment. Creating "two year" age bracket tournaments is one of youth lacrosse's strengths.

However, we do point out that the player pass issue is independent from the structure of the brackets. What you do want to avoid is a club gaming the system by playing players or a whole team "down" for no good reason.

Coming back to the soccer point, the only time BOTC/BOTN can recall having seen age-group mixing on a regular basis was the East Meadow Covanta Cup flight which matched premier level U/16 and up teams. This mixing is more often seen in lacrosse and is actually an overall positive for development.
