Sacred Heart and Saint Anthony's should be able to give most teams in Nassau and Suffolk a run for their money.Have to show the Catholic's a little love.

The Catholic High Schools are ranked outside of the public schools as you probably know. Generally speaking, the local rankings seem to be pretty clear.

Girls Catholic High Schools

1. St. Anthony's
2. Sacred Heart
3. Kellenberg
4. St. John the Baptist
5. Our Lady of Mercy
6. Holy Trinity
7. St. Mary's
8. St. Dominic's

The ranking gap between St. Anthony's and Sacred Heart is much larger than the gap from Sacred Heart back to the rest of the field.

St. Anthony's would be competitive with all the top Nassau and Suffolk teams. Being fair, Sacred Heart is probably competitive with the fifth ranked teams and downward across the two counties.

These are all schools in different divisions. But there will finish in top of their standings
6 WEEKS and we have a new season upon us. Lets hope for plenty of excitement, lots of improvement and some hard fought battles. Lets hope those with injuries are fully recovered and those with strong potential have worked hard since last season. Can't wait to watch some of the early season battles. Good luck to all our defending champions and those who plan to take the top spots. Lets get the dialog going.

If it ever stops snowing. If we keep getting buried in snow through February it could make it a real pain for girls to get out. Season starts @ March 16th and we can get some reason snow storms in March. Ugh
May as well wrap up and deliver # 1 trophy now.No one will touch Garden City in the publics.
Dont count out NORTHPORT they are stacked with everyone returning!!

Look out for Farmingdale!
Open question ; Who will be the top sophpmores this year from Section VIII and Section XI?

Sophomore year is the primary BO year for most top players. Some to watch :

Courtney Fortunato - Northport
Maggie Bill - St. Anthony's

Nadine Hadnagny - Farmingdale

Any other sophomore "shots to watch"?
Courtney Fortunato - Northport
Caroline Fitzgerald-Mt Sinai
Maggie Bill - St. Anthony's
Nadine Hadnagny - Farmingdale
Alexis Maffucci-Hills
Taylor Fischer-Comsewogue
Julia DiMaria-Hills
Ali Tilley-Ward Melville

How about these other players?

Birdie Gahan (Friends/Liberty)
Jenny CoachS (St. A's/Express)
Maddy Molinari (Manhasset/Liberty)
Question: Why don't the high schools on Long Island plow their turf fields like all of the colleges on Long Island? In most cases, it is the same style of turf so that can't be the issue. With all of the new turf fields we have throughout Long Island and most of them sit covered in snow, the kids have no where to shoot and play and get ready for the spring.

Its not in New York State's budget! LOL
Schedules for Nassau are posted on the Section 8 web site. Things look a lot different this season.

How is this going to work as far as playoffs go? Is this good for the sport in Nassau?

Just finished looking at the records of the Class C teams mentioned. Have I looked at the wrong data or were all of the leading Class C teams at most two games over .500 last season? With budget cuts looming all over in the New York State and shortened schedules (non-division scrimmages), it will be tough to gauge just how well these teams would match up with one another.

Some of the current Class C schools played in the Nassau County "Power Conference". A small school like Cold Spring Harbor played schools like Garden City, Manhasset, Farmingdale, Wantagh, Friends Academy, North Shore, Massapequa, South Side, Syosset, Calhoun, Carle Place, Hicksville and Plainedge.

Only three of those schools were in the Class C playoffs; all of the others were in Class A or Class B.

Cold Spring Harbor was 10W-8L with the fourth strength of schedule ranking.
Nassau Class A: Farmingdale is an overwhelming favorite while Massapequa and Port will be fighting for the second spot. Calhoun will also be in the mix tihs year but the upgrade to Class A might be a problem.

Nassau Class B: Obviously Garden City is the clear favorite but Manhasset moving into Class B makes it more interesting for the first time in years. Wantagh, South Side and Division should be in the mix to round out the top four.

Nassau Class C: Cold Spring Harbor and North Shore will battle for the top spot with Friends, Carle Place, and Mineola for the next spots - remember only top 6 make the playoffs.

the thought of sayville being ahead of bayport is disgusting. bayport beat them twice last year ...not even close games. Mount sinai will not beat bayport in the class c title. Bayport has only lost 3 key starters and still has it's top scorers. do not under estimate loren generi, gen stickney , christy thoden, julia ohnson and rachel obrien.
I don't understand how Bayport Bluepoint could be placed under Sayville having beat them last year. They are sure to win their county game as well, nobody on Sinai can stop their best players.. Sinai has a young team who lost twice to Bayport. Don't underestimate BBP.

The ranking clearly reflects Sayville's overall record last season which favored them over BBP. Mount Sanai girls side has improved this year and could well challenge for Suffolk's Class C title. That does not take away from BBP - but the whole season goes into a ranking, not just the head-to-head games.

Middle Country Girls played Bayport in scrimmage yesterday. I know its just a scrimmage but they were down 6-2 (Bayport) at half and lost by about 11-8. Maybe they were missing some girls? They didn't look to be a force??

Thursday night action, middle country 14, Babylon 11. Good non league action, 7 different girls scoring for m.c.
Back of the Cage was in attendance at yesterday's heavyweight battle between five time defending Class B Champions, Garden City, and two time defending Class A Champions, Farmingdale. After trailing 6-3 at halftime, the hometown Garden City fans were as chilly to the game as the weather was to the players. As exceptional second have that saw Garden City outscore Farmingdale, 14-5, etched the final score at 17-11 for the Trojans over the Dalers.

As the scoring indicates this was two games inside one with the second half offense from Garden City telling the tale.

With roughly 14 minutes remaining, Garden City assumed the lead at 9-8 and never looked back extending the difference to three and then four goals with eight minutes remaining. A trio of Trojans netted four each for Garden City (Boston College-bound Mikaela Rix, Catherine Dickinson (junior), and Georgetown-bound Caroline Tarzian) while the now-Maryland-bound Kelly McPartland netted a pair for the Dalers. Harvard-bound Kelly Weis played well in the opening stanza before Erin Mullins stepped between the pipes in the second half.

Are these halftime "crushes" really what the varsity game wants to achieve? Isn't it time to consider ability based divisions in scholastic lacrosse to get away from the blowouts, particularly on the girl's side this year?

Reported by Newsday, April 10th, 2011

The head coaches of the Babylon and Sayville girls lacrosse teams have been suspended for the remainder of the 2011 season by Suffolk's public high school athletics governing body for a scheduling rules violation, but their teams will be allowed to compete in the postseason if they qualify.

An appeals committee of Section XI, Suffolk's chapter of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, suspended Babylon's Tim Harrison and Sayville's Gary Jensen from all coaching duties Thursday because their teams played more than the maximum number of games permitted for varsity lacrosse teams, officials for the schools and Section XI said.

The teams, which did not play each other, were to lose their playoff eligibility, but the appeals committee ruled to allow both to participate in the postseason, should they qualify, and suspended the head coaches for the rest of the season effective Saturday, Section XI executive director Ed Cinelli said.

The maximum number of games lacrosse teams are permitted to play was changed from 17 to 16 after the 2009 season, according to the Section XI handbook. Sayville's Jensen said he hadn't been aware of the change and, in fact, tried without success to schedule a 17th game last season, too. Babylon's Harrison would not comment on the suspension.

"The [NYSPHSAA] and Section XI have a very specific rule: if you play in excess of 16 games, you would forfeit the 17th game and you are not eligible for playoffs," Cinelli said.

Section XI scheduling rules state the maximum number of games varsity lacrosse teams can play is 16. Sayville and Babylon each played three non-league games and have 14 scheduled league games for a total of 17.

Babylon athletic director Mike DeJoseph and Sayville AD Dennis Maloney spoke on behalf of their respective programs at Thursday's hearing, Cinelli said. As terms of their suspensions, Jensen and Harrison must cease all coaching activities for the remainder of the 2011 season and are not permitted to attend games as spectators until next season, according to Cinelli.

"It's my responsibility as AD to take responsibility for any violation that takes place under my watch," Maloney said. "Unfortunately, my coach is receiving the punishment. I wish I was the one receiving the punishment. The good thing was they didn't take it out on my student-athletes."

Jensen said he informed his team of the rulings at the conclusion of its Thursday practice.

"I told them the good news [being playoff-eligible] first. They cheered, they were so happy," Jensen said. "At the end, I said, 'Here's the drawback. I'm being reprimanded for my mistake.'

"I am very happy that they decided to put the kids first and I'm glad the kids aren't going to be punished for an adult mistake," he added.

Assistant coach Adam Sznitken was named interim head coach for Sayville, which beat Bellport, 17-3, on Friday. Maloney said Sznitken is expected to be named head coach for the remainder of the season pending approval from Sayville's Board of Education as soon as later this week.

DeJoseph issued a statement to Newsday acknowledging Babylon's violation Friday afternoon.

"We claim full responsibility for the infraction and accept the consequences," DeJoseph said in a statement. "Babylon respects the leadership and governance of Section XI and the NYSPHSAA and will continue to follow the rules and regulations without exception. We want to get back to the business of playing lacrosse and request all concerned parties respect our wishes."

DeJoseph was unable to say who will replace Harrison as Babylon head coach for the remainder of the season. Harrison, who coached the Panthers in their 14-8 loss to Eastport-South Manor on Friday, declined to comment to Newsday.

Sayville's superintendent was unavailable for comment and the high school principal did not return a call from Newsday. Babylon's superintendent did not return a call and the principal declined to comment.

Sayville's new AD is horrible. Did a do-nothing job at Middle Country then thought he would slide right into program at Sayville. Watch out for him, his ineptitude will hurt their program further.

When your old coach wanted to come back you should have welcomed him back with open arms. Yes, he wanted to come back and was told no. Bottom line, swr cannot compete as well in a more competitive division as in evidenced by their games this year. The fact that rocky point is not the team they were last year with out Mupo and they still beat swr speaks volumes. No longer do you have to win two playoff games to get in the finals like previous years. This spring will be a rude awakening for swr...

. Funny, the best player on Northport (besides GIlroy) is a sophomore, age doesn't always matter
No the old coach did not want to come back. I personally know him and he was not interested. Yes Rocky Point beat SWR and we have a new coach. All I am saying is that SWR is not the team it once was and they have work to do but slamming them and the kids who are involved is not productive as it isn't for any team. The girls who are involved with the program play respectfully and give credit where credit is due. The new coach works hard at taking the place of a coach who one 4 state championships. It is a hard place for her to be in, so give credit where credit is due.
That also is an immature statement about Northport. There are certain teams who only have one or two talented players that make the whole teams and its evident. SWR graduated those players and have a new coaching staff and slamming kids is just plain immature.

Now you are saying that swr graduated "those players with talent" leaving what? players who are not talented? Your words not mine. Too me, that sounds like you are slamming them. I never said team did not have talent I said they were in an easy division for years. Youch

The biggest problem that Northport has is that the league season sees them not playing enough top flight competition so that when the Class A cross-over with Section 8 happens (Nassau), they will get run over. Shoreham-Wading River is playing well on both the girls and boys side this season.

Youch you are putting words in my mouth that i did not say. What I said was they graduated players that had way more experience some of them were on the team since 8th grade. You were the one saying we should have never let the coach go and that its not a cakewalk. Never was a cakewalk just girls who worked hard to get to be where they were Double Youch.

What does that say for Nassau Competition? Bayshore struggles in Suffolk?
On any day Northport,Bayshore, floyd, west islip, melville, hauppauge would give any Nassau team a great game. SWR and RP just cant hang this year!

It says that Bay Shore scored three in overtime after a 10-10 game. Section VIII is still the strongest until a Section XI team takes out Garden City. Going to be some great games coming down the stretch. Who do you like in Class A or Class B?
Oh so it says there is only one really good team in Nassau!!

Clearly, Garden City is quality. Manhasset is also typically solid come playoff time. Wantagh despite the loss will be competitive as will Farmingdale and Massapequa. If you look at Nassau thus far, the disappointments would be Syosset, Hickville, and Plainedge from years past.

Before yesterday's games, you would have predicted Floyd and Northport remaining undefeated in league play and until they went up against each other. Someone forgot to tell Ward Melville yesterday as they landed one of the major upsets of the girls varsity season in an 11-7 win over Floyd.

Half Hollow Hills' blemishes this season included the losses to Bay Shore and Northport which showed them to be just a cut below the top tier teams. Yes, HHH defeated the same Ward Melville by a goal two weeks back.

Floyd has not hung up ten goals in their last three matches scoring seven on Ward Melville, eight on East Islip, and nine on Lindenhurst. Perhaps the team is wearing down late in the season?

Overall, we still have to go with Floyd on a bounceback heading into the playoffs. BOTC Industries will call this game at 10-8 for Floyd.
The game between HHH and Floyd is huge.HHH is finally coming of age with their talented sophomore class( 11 of them) led by Julia Dimaria and Alexis Maffucci. While Northport is still far superior than anybody else watch out for HHH over the next two years.....

If Sidaris (goalie) is on her game, Floyd will previal!
I think Lindenhurst has a great goalie

The number of underclassmen is certainly an issue for the Half Hollow Hills camp. The Floyd attack and midfield positions should be able to take advantage of the age/experience difference in getting to the ten goal mark for the first time in their last four matches.
Same can be said for Ward Melville. Young team very talented, Great defense good young goal keeper. Girls LaCrosse on Long Island appears to be alive and very Strong.

Final result : Floyd 13, Half Hollow Hills 10. Our BOTC Industries assessment on this game was correct for Floyd and one has to be impressed with the potential for Half Hollow Hills' Girls Varsity to potentially dominate in the next two years with rising sophomores - a very interesting pair of teams, both this season and for the next two to follow!

McDonogh was absolutely the better team on Saturday and certainly deserves a #1 national ranking for High School Varsity programs. St. Anthony's goaltending was top notch with a half dozen saves at close range to keep the score within reach. During the game, St. Anthony's was slow in moving from the defensive to offensive ends, but that could have been the outstanding quality of the McDonogh midfielders.

Congratulations to the following Girls Varsity Lacrosse Newsday Athletes of the Week :

Paula Schmidt | Wantagh : She totaled 19 points in two wins last week, including a seven-goal, five-assist explosion on Monday.

Courtney Murphy | Floyd : Had 11 goals in two games last week, including the winner in the Colonials' 12-11 victory over West Babylon.

Bridget Vilbig | Island Trees : The junior had a career-high 10 goals and five assists in the Bulldogs' 27-18 win over Mepham on Monday.
Sacred Heart looked good over a lathargic Shoreham team. SH let them back in late to make it look close. Wantagh was efficient but not spectacular against a young, scrappy and talented Mt.Sinai team! Turnovers did them in. but look out for MS in the C's! Good goalie and talented youngsters!Garden City was atheletic and surgical in their win against Northport! Northports Defense could not hang with GC's Athlete's. Gilroy could not dominate GC's middy's. GC is the real deal!

Garden City 17, Northport 7

Halftime score was 11-5 and the game was not that close. The Garden City attack positions were just dominant compared to anything else that we've seen in High School this season.

Northport runs much of their offense through one player (Shannon Gilroy). This is very typical of a High School varsity lacrosse team and works most of the time until you meet a nationally ranked team like Garden City. Garden City can score through three or four different positions and moves the ball well - check the scoring/assist table and you'll get that picture.

Scoring:
Garden City -- Barbara Sullivan, 5 goals/1 assists; Alexandra Bruno, 3 goals/4 assists; Catherine Dickinson, 3 goals; Mikaela Rix, 3 goals/1 assists; Caroline Tarzian, 1 goals; Catherine McTiernan, 1 goals; Jenna Fuchs, 1 goals/1 assists.
Northport -- Shannon Gilroy, 4 goals; Megan Marinelli, 1 goals; Paige Bonomi, 1 goals; Cortney Fortunato, 1 goals.

Goalies:
Garden City -- Kelly Weis, 7 saves.
Northport -- Meaghan Kollmeier, 5 saves.
Way to GC against Northport! Made Northport look sloppy! As far as Mt Sinai not sure as I agree with your comments. Shoreham I thought played well considering the season they have had and their goalie is what saved their game.

Never mind Gilroy. What was the story of GC holding Fortunato to 1 point when she averaged over 7?

As far as Shoreham, I guess if you lower your expectations they competed, but they looked disinterested in the 1st half. They did gain some steam as the game progressed. What don't you agree about Mt. Sinai? They turned the ball over a lot and their D was suspect, but they did a good job in the middle of the field and had some talent in the offensive end. Loooking at their roster they are mostly 8th,9th and 10th graders. GC looked like a good D 1 college team!
Northports Fortunato and Gilroy were no match for Sullivan
I guess in time we will see with Mt Sinai I just think Wantagh was the stronger team, but you are right a lot of young talent. Garden City did play like a D1 team! As far as Shoreham I don't think you have to lower your standards they are also a young team with a new coach, lots of dropping passes and not getting ground balls, give them time too. Remember a lot of their players now did not necessarily "play" last year
Wantagh is certainly a strong contender this season, but Mount Sinai looks to have two years of very good varsity lacrosse in front of them on the girls side.

As for Shoreham-WR, the problem with dropped passes and ground balls is a fundamentals issue which is rarely ever adequately addessed within the context of a varsity program. This has to be addressed with a club or showcase team where the practices are more intense. I would look for more growth at the varsity level from Mount Sinai than Shoreham-WR for that reason.

can anyone tell me when girl's high school tryout were? can you still tryout? who should you contact? also is their going to be an empire state team this year? is their any other tryout going on like Under Armour, adidas???????
I'd like to know this too. How does one find out about these types of tryouts? My daughter's high school coach does not forward any of this type of information to the team members. Do you find out through the club teams?

Girl's High School Varsity tryouts were back in February/March and the High School League season is just about reaching the playoffs over the next two weeks. The Empire State Games were cancelled this year which is a tremendous loss as the ESGs were more about the entire experience than just the lacrosse matches.

Your final question was about the Under Armour Tournament. The Under Armour All-American Lacrosse Classic Underclassmen Tournament will be held from July 1st-3rd, 2011 at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. Our regional tryout events are as follows :

Long Island Boys - June 11th/12th - 6pm-10pm - John Burns Park in Massapequa - Coach : Mike CoachC

Long Island Girls - June 20th-21st - 3pm-7pm - John Burns Park in Massapequa - Coach : Corrine Broesler-Lomangino

Hope that this helps.

You assume that your High School coach, drawing a stipend typically in the $8,000 range, is plugged into the National Lacrosse Scene and wants to be a part of those programs.

Programs like Under Armour and Adidas are those "Fall Between the Cracks" types of showcase events. High School coaches are generally not tuned into these events as their Varsity teams are their players "most important focus". Meanwhile, Club and Premier lacrosse teams are charging to be part of those larger programs and as a result would not have an interest in advertising programs like Under Armour and Adidas.

Therefore, often times, such events only become known through word of mouth (like provided on the BOTC message boards), a committed High School Varsity coach/program, or searches executed by parents/players looking for other options.

The downside with these single showcase events is that there is no continuity for longer term player development or showcasing. Under Armour and Adidas are one shot deals - and very functional at that level - but most players are seeking a longer term arrangement. Hence, you will see cross-overs from High School teams into these events and from these events into Elite Summer teams.
If you are refferring to the School Girls tryout, It was a couple of weeks ago. The teams are picked already but they haven't released all the names yet. The girls were told if they made it at the end of the tryout.

Many of these games are affected by the ref's too much. I wish they would put the whistle away a bit and not be such a big part of the outcome of the game. I do think it is importtant to protect the players but they need to let them play a bit. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a girl lose the ball and immediately grab her head looking for a call(and usually get it). It seems the better actress you are the more calls you get. In addition it also seems that whenever a girl falls down whether it is incidental or on her own most ref's will give her the ball back! It is frustrating to watch and it is starting to promote drama queens. I also can't stomach watching some of the ref's take 3 minutes off the clock to move a girl 4 inches half way accross the field! It would be great to see the girls ability and execution dictate who comes away with a victory!

Suddenly, Farmingdale and Northport become the Class A teams to beat in Section VIII and Section XI. Massapequa and Long Beach (longshot) will be the key Nassau challengers; Floyd, West Islip, Half Hollow Hills and Bay Shore are all looking for the Suffolk title.

I can't disagree with this either. Coming from a soccer background, I see a lot of dramatics that remind me of European football. Heh. But it works, so...<shrugging> In general, the reffing seems erratic, even within one game. I've felt that my daughter's team has been on both sides of reffing that really influenced the outcome of the game. And really, the bottom line should be how many balls find the back of the cage, not how many preferential calls your team gets.

While many readers will not like this answer, one reason why the game is called more tightly with the girls as opposed to the boys is that protective headgear (helmets) is not worn by the girls. Now, the female headgear vote "failed" earlier this year - so nothing changed. However it has always seemed obvious to us that standing in front of a thrown lacrosse ball at short distance should itself be enough reason to introduce helmets.
Was at the Sachem N-Longwood game for senior night. LW has a defender; didn't catch the name, but her number was 17. Late in the 2nd half, she took a clear the goalie and outran the whole Sachem team. No dodging or ducking; just straight running.

Who is this girl? All I know that she is black.

My point was not about whether they should wear head gear or not. It was about how the game is being called. i personally don't think head gear will solve much. The boys still get hit in the head a lot and there are plenty of penalties given out for it. Right now there are no helmets and the ref's have to call the game under the current rules and guidelines. They have the ability to keep the whistle to themselves unless they feel the game is getting dangerous. Awarding players for pretending to get hit or dramatically falling down is rediculous! In hocky if you "take a dive" the penalty is on that player. I would love to see that rule put in! For now I would be satisfied if the ref's tried a bit harder not to be part of the game and let the girls play to see which team is actually better. As it stands now I think they actually play lacrosse about 25 of the 50 minutes.
I heard, and correct me if I"m wrong, that the reason helmets were voted down was the feeling that wearing helmets would encourage more violent play.

My first experience with lacrosse was with the boys' game, and to then see the girls play, well, it was frustrating. So much stoppage of play. I always wanted to just suit the girls up like the boys and let them get on with the game. Every game girls are getting hit in the head by errant checks (or at least making it look that way, referencing posts earlier in this thread). I know a goalie who took a ball to the helmet and got a concussion, so imagine if she hadn't had a helmet on. Scary. Every defender that runs in to help defend the net runs the risk of a shot to the head.

Does anyone know what the selection process is for All Conference, All County, etc.? Who selects the players? Is it the coach or the coaches of the teams they play against?

Hauppauge continues to be impressive in Suffolk Class B at with their 12-0 record figure to make it to the county finals. You would have to expect that either Sayville or Mount Sinai would make it to at least one more rematch in the playoffs with Hauppauge before the season's end.

Of course, the game on which all of Suffolk B will focus will be the County Championship against Garden City.

Generally based on the team's record, the coach will be allocated a certain number of slots for each post-season award; once the allocation is made, the team coach decides which of his/her players are placed at which level. Remember that the allocation does actually start with the team's rank/record within the county and within the individual class/conference.

It won't be Mt. Sinai, They are a C team!I heard Mt. Sinai gave them a run, cutting it to 11-9 with 7 minutes left. Look for Bayport or Mt Sinai to win the counties. I believe either of those teams should beat the Nassau C champ, whether it is CSH or Northshore!

As soon as we saw this post, we knew we had Mount Sinai in the wrong class!

Apologies on that and we agree that Bayport/Mount Sinai in the Section XI Class C tournament will be the dominant forces.

We also agree that both teams are heads and shoulders over Cold Spring Harbor (slightly disappointing this year) and North Shore.

Thanks for the correction.
Hauppauge is hot, that's for sure. I think Garden City will crush them though.

Any thoughts on how West Islip has managed to stay in second place after losing to Northport, Floyd and HHH?

Let's look at Cold Spring Harbor so far this season. Their twelve goal loss to Garden City (18-6), one goal come back win on North Shore (8-7), four goal loss to Summit (NJ), big loss to Massapequa (15-4), and an eight goal loss to Wantagh early in the season (19-11).

Meanwhile, Mount Sinai lost by five to Hauppauge (14-9), lost to Wantagh (15-11), Eastport-South Manor (15-9), and Harborfields (10-8).

In essence, CSH had non-conference games that were not really competitive this season. The game to look at between the two is the Wantagh common opponent. We think that Mount Sinai might just be a little stronger.

Bayport's loss to Hauppauge (11-5) was certainly no disgrace and puts them right with Mount Sinai having beaten Eastport-South Manor during the season (11-8). Would not be surprised to see Bayport go up against Cold Spring Harbor for the Class C title.

Since Northport has run the table in Suffolk's League I (13-0) thus far, the real story is West Islip, Floyd, Half Hollow Hills, and Bay Shore. All four are 10-3/11-3/11-2 at this point and pretty much round-robin winning against each other.

West Islip's win over Bay Shore was definitive. Half Hollow Hills win over west Islip was an upset, but then Bay Shore also won by a goal against Half Hollow Hills. Floyd defeated Half Hollow Hills which just goes to show the mix.

If we had to call it right now, West Islip and Floyd are slightly better than Bay Shore and Half Hollow Hills. In a head to head match, we might just take Floyd as we did earlier in the season off that 10-7 win against West Islip.

None the less, all four of these teams need to find a way to get past Northport in order to get to the Long Island Championship.
i think that CSH will be playing mt sinai for the long island title. the team to win that game will probaby be sinai because they have strong players on the field. dont get me wrong, CSH has a great program and am not judging this is just my prediction.
i disagree and think that sinai will beat bayport for counties and then go on to beat CSH for islands, NS will be hard though

Giacolone letting up a lot of goals this year. You only hear about her so much because of who her father is.

Bayport will be a tough out for Mt. Sinai! Generi will be the most dominant player on the field. i saw Mt. Sinai play and they are a very talented group, but really young. They have a couple of good seniors but most of the talent is 8th,9th and 10th graders. Maybe the best young group around but every team needs their upper classmen to play their best. If both teams play to their potential Mt Sinai wins. It will be interesting to see if they can knock off Bayport twice. I think either team beats CSH or Northshore. Bertalone has a stable of young hungry Yellow jackets out there!

You make it seem like it is a one on one sport. Do you think the other 11 kids on the feild had anything to do with the outcome of the game??? I am not saying she is a bad goalie, but certainly nothing special!!!The team is a solid TEAM!

Ranking the top ten girls lacrosse teams from Nassau County heading into the playoffs.

[1] Garden City (Record : 15-0, Preseason #1) - No questions until someone manages to knock the Trojans from the pedestal.

[2] Farmingdale (Record : 13-1, Preseason #3) - Two-time defending Class A state champs remain the mark to beat with their Conference A-I championship over Massapequa. Lone loss? Garden City.

[3] Wantagh (Record : 12-3, Preseason #4) - Three losses included Farmingdale and Garden City which helps set the overall pecking order.

[4] Massapequa (Record : 10-4, Preseason #10) - Their closing game loss to Farmingdale placed them in the four slot as a solid Class A program.

[5] Manhasset (Record : 12-3, Preseason #2) - Facing Garden City is never easy but four wins in conference play was a good result.

[6] Cold Spring Harbor (Record : 11-4, Preseason #7) - Good season punctuated by some big losses when playing outside the pond. The class of Class C will need to survive their North Shore match to return to the Long Island Championship match.

[7] Port Washington (Record : 12-3, Preseason #5) - Next best to Massapequa coming from Class A, Port Washington hopes to survive a couple of rounds in this year's playoffs.

[8] North Shore (Record : 11-4, Preseason #6) - The whole season will be summed up in a playoff rematch with CSH with their seniors trying to avenge the 8-7 conference deciding loss.

[9] South Side (Record : 9-4, Preseason #12) - Perhaps they would have had a better league record by playing in Class A rather than Class B. Despite their first round bye, South Side is the more vulnerable Class B seed heading for the semifinals.

[10] Long Beach (Record : 11-4, Preseason #17) - How do they avenge a 20-9 loss to Port Washington from earlier in the season? Surprising season for this program and an opening round playoff matchup with Port Washington allows them to avoid the big two from Class A. Can the pull off the redemption upset following their most recent four wins?
Ranking the top ten girls lacrosse teams from Suffolk County heading into the playoffs.

[1] Northport (Record : 13-2, Preseason #1) - Undefeated in league play, Northport remains the top of Suffolks Class A with a loss to Garden City and Good Counsel on the slate.

[2] Floyd (Record : 13-2, Preseason #11) - Lost to Northport and Ward Melville were the only blemishes this season.

[3] Hauppauge (Record : 15-0, Preseason #5) - Undefeated in Suffolk League II action with a softer schedule than the top two choices.

[4] West Islip (Record : 12-3, Preseason #7) - The four/five slots can flip flop from the contentious second grouping from Suffolk's League I action.

[5] Bay Shore (Record : 12-3, Preseason #4) - Surprising performance this year; the other half of the flip/flop entries in the four/five slots.

[6] Sayville (Record : 13-2, Preseason #9) Since the April 6th loss to Mount Sinai, Sayville has certainly been executing on all cylinders. This team could well be more dangerous in the playoff than their Mount Sinai rivals.

[7] Half Hollow Hills (Record : 11-4, Preseason #20) Next best from League I in a year where the round-robin matches did not all fall their way.

[8] Mount Sinai (Record : 11-4, Preseason #18) A tough loss to Hauppauge aside, other losses included Wantagh, Eastport South Manor, and Harborfields. The loss to Harborfields was the blemish on the ranking. Young group will be playoff pressed this year.

[9] Ward Melville (Record : 9-6, Preseason #15) What did they do wrong except run into the League I buzzsaws?

[10] Harborfields (Record : 11-4, Preseason #23) In a League II where many teams are locked at 9-4, Harborfields stands out as next best to round out the list. The one goal loss to Sayville on April 26th sent a message that this team could be primed for a playoff upset - that game was the end of their three game losing streak to ESM, Huntington, and Sayville.

Bay Shore did well to wrestle the second seed away from Floyd in overtime.
Newsday's Top Ten for Suffolk, as of May 15th:

1. Northport (13-2)
Clearly the best Class A team in Suffolk, the Tigers rebounded from last week’s 10-goal loss to Garden City by defeating Floyd, 16-10 on the road and thumping Middle Country.

2. Hauppauge (15-0)
Suffolk’s lone undefeated team, the Eagles defeated two tough opponents in Harborfields and Mt. Sinai last week. Jen Porretto is making a serious challenge to be the top-scorer on Long Island. Porretto is currently No. 2 with 109 points, trailing Northport’s Shannon Gilroy (113 pts).

3. Floyd (13-2)
Lost to Northport, but everyone else has too. For what it’s worth, Gilroy said the Colonials were the toughest team Northport’s played in Suffolk.

4. West Islip (12-3)
Lost a close game to Half Hollow Hills and snuck past West Babylon this week thanks to Loren Ziegler’s seven goals and assist.

5. Sayville (13-2)
Defeated Kings Park and Miller Place thanks to Emily Meier’s combined 13 goals and assist.

6. Bay Shore (12-3)
Won games against Lindenhurst and Sachem North last week.

7. Half Hollow Hills (11-4)
Edged West Islip and romped Patchogue-Medford last week.

8. Harborfields (11-4)
Had a close 16-13 loss to Hauppauge, the only other team to challenge the Eagles was Sayville.

9. Mt. Sinai (11-4)
Lost to Hauppauge and defeated Westhampton

10. Bayport-Blue Point (10-4)
Wins over Huntington and Shoreham-Wading River bump BBP into the Top 10 this week.
Can someone please explain the power ranking system to me? Or point me to a link with an explanation?

Someone on the Boys Varsity thread just requested similar information.

BOTC Industries has been through the details and basically, you need one big Excel spreadsheet to get all of the calculations to be correct. However, if you want to see the whole algorithm in action, take a look at the following link which includes some detailed examples from the Section XI web site :

Power Points Rating System
Holy smokes, that's mind-boggling! I think I like the win = 3 pts., tie = 1 and loss = 0 way better. At least I can figure it out on my own.

Thanks for the link, CageSage.

Thanks for the link, CageSage.
With the unbalanced schedules in Section XI, the Power Points System attempts to capture the difference between Team A that is forced to play the top team in a conference from Team B that plays the bottom placed team yet wind up with the same record overall.
Why do they divide the teams up in those large divisions? Instead of, say, how they divide up the soccer teams?

For some reason, the smaller brackets used by soccer have never caught on within Section XI's football and lacrosse camps. Perhaps it is that the structure has been around for less time or perhaps there is flexibility in being able to change opponents each season.
Section XI Division II (Class B) seedings and post season tournament pairings have been published. The tournament will open on Saturday, May 21st.

Huntington (8) @ Hauppauge (1)
Harborfields (5) @ Eastport-South Manor (4)

Shoreham-Wading River (6) @ Rocky Point (3)
Comseqogue (7) @ Sayville (2)

Second round semi-final action will be on Tuesday, May 24th.
Section XI Division II (Class C) brackets have been released.

The semi-final match will pit Elwood-John Glenn (3) against Bayport-Blue Point (2). The winner will face Mount Sinai (1) in the Championship on Thursday, June 2nd.

Key in this bracket is that Mount Sinai will not have a game on the scoresheet for the next two full weeks. Will they be game sharp to face that BBP lineup?

Its amazing that you can have a losing record and still be in a playoffs and in the semi finals no less. It is further amazing to me that in the "C Class" division you can automatically get in the championship without playing one playoff game. Look how hard it is in the "Class A" bracket.

You are right. This is why shoreham-wading river got into the finals every year. You will notice that they could be out in first round. Watch them go back into class c next year

The weather washed away most of the games from the opening round of the Class A and Class C Section VIII action today. The only game that went off despite the weather was the Farmingdale (1) vs. MacArthur (8) match in Class A.

Farmingdale crushed MacArthur, 23-4

With the win, the Dalers will next face the winner of the Baldwin (4)/Syosset (5) match on Thursday, May 26th.

Among the privates in IPSAL,

Long Island Lutheran over Portledge, 11-10, Overtime

You can put more teams in the C playoffs but it isn't going to change who wins the C championship. There is a reason they are class C schools. They have LESS girls to choose from!! It is not like these teams are ducking the competition during the year. Both Bayport and Mt Sinai played most of the top "B" schools and did very well! Instead of degrading the accomplishment of winning their bracket, you should be applauding the fact they are very competitive with some schools that have 50-100% more girls in the district. The girls from these schools work just as hard or harder to compete as any of the schools. They don't make the brackets, you shouldn't try to minimize their accomplishments(past or future).

Glenn would not have a losing record if they only played class C schools!
They are (Swr) going back to Class C and it has to do with the size of the school.

Sayville is gonna crush swr.
I'm no Sayville fan, nor a SWR fan for that matter, but I do think Sayville is going to win handily. :-/
SWR goalie played a stellar game and why are you so prejudiced against SWR? Not cool to put a team dowm time and time again makes you look small. I think giving credit where credit is due is appropriate and both teams played outstanding lacrosse today with all heart both SWR and Rocky Point. Both teams should be proud and commended on jobs well done!

Problem is both teams "put their eggs in one basket" with their seniors last year not letting team share the ball. When the "big dogs" leave the underclassmen (women?) are left holding the bag. Gotta share the ball.
Ok so some kids were ball hogs last year so that makes a whole team "bad" um ok?? Thats an interesting point of view? Aren't high school teams always changing?
Maybe the poster meant that since last year's seniors hogged the ball that this year's team isn't as well-prepared as they would have been if they'd been included last year.

Yes that is what I meant. But the coaches encourage this type of play too. Then when the seniors graduate they are like, oh crap.
I agree, and I see it across sports. Coaches need to develop the bench to secure future success. Witness SWR and RP this year.
I've heard of all of them exdept for Hadnagy, never heard of her!

Looks like a slam-dunk for all the number one seeds and North Shore (who catches a break thanks to Locust Valley) ... with the exception of the Mount Sinai vs. BBP match where Bayport is looking upset minded.

Long Island champions figure to be all Nassau with Farmingdale (A) and Garden City (B).

Lacrosse is starting to look like year-round soccer! Between high school varsity games/practices six days per week, outside club teams during the Spring season and these types of showcases, the likelihood of injury just increases.

Interesting that none of the girls games were close in the Nassau finals. (Dalers by 7, Garden City by 5, North Shore by 10). Meanwhile, almost all of the boys games have been nail biters!

Well, the final margin was exactly right - but the Trojans could have won by a dozen if they kept the engines wide open against Manhasset.

It was all just a publicity stunt. She was never hurt! She was just tired of CF getting all the press.
CF is a much better player. She was face guarded the whole game and still scored 4 goals.
The "injured" one had no one on her and only got 2 goals in and about 10 missed shots.
Her driving threw 5 people will never work in D1 lacrosse. Where the defenders are as big as her!
I guess Florida will have to teach her how to play real lacrosse!

next year! I mean
what does it matter what bracket Swr is in that goes by school size duh?
another prejudiced comment about SWR? So silly are these comments.
Smaller schools generally offer less competition. Duh. SWR would have a better chance at a title in class C.

It must be a coincidence that 4 years in a row they win a title then the first year they are moved up to "B" they lose 7 games and are out before leaving Suffolk County. I am sure its just a coincidence

Of course. That is why they were so great. Lesser competition.
yes and mt sinai beat SWR for the first time ever this season and mt sinai is class c and swr is b...coincidence or is swr recovering from losing so many seniors

I think it's a little bit of both. I think SWR was dominant for a number of years but wasn't able to field as good a team this year. No disrespect to the girls on that team, but I suspect they didn't have the experience the older girls brought to the field. Plus it's also easier in the lower class, generally speaking.
It has nothing to do with B or C. It has to do with the girls on the team. Shoreham lost many good players. When they were a C team the beat just about all the B teams they played(with the exception of GC). They are still a good team(not dominant). We will see what the future brings. Every school especially smaller schools have good classes and bad. Shoreham battled this year with a pretty good team. It's hard to dominate every year whether u are A,B or C!Look at Bayport and Mt Sinai thy beat most of the B teams as well. It is all about the girls who are playing , NOT THE NAME on their jersey!!!
It has nothing to do with you class. A, B or C. SWR is a young team many of the seniors moved on. For some reason Powerfinger is extremely prejudiced against this team. look at the past posts. When you come from a small school district the pool of girls that tryout is of course not as large and what pushed us into the B bracket this yr was a matter of 5 kids. SWR is a bunch of nice HARD working kids who had a rough year with the transition of new coach and many new players. All in All impresive for what they accomplished

Dont make it seem like you only get 15 girls playing lacrosse. At SWR its field hockey (fall) and lacrosse in spring. You have plenty of girls to pick from. In fact you have more girls playing lax in SWR than many A schools
Long Island Championship - Girls Class B (Final)

The Trojans immediately responded on the second goal by Tarzian with a little over one minute remaining in the half. Sullivan scored with literally ticks remaining to put Garden City in complete control heading to the locker room.

The Trojans scored in the opening two minutes of the back half with Dickinson netting her second. After a Brighton goal, Rix netted her first of the day to make the score 7-2. Brighton tightened to 7-4 but Dickinson's third and Rix's second broke it back open to 9-4. Nine minutes remaining.

Sullivan to Fuchs with seven minutes remaining puts Garden City up by five - but Brighton still shows fight and scores right from the draw.
Class B Championship : Garden City 12, Brighton 6 (Final)

Garden City wins the Class B State Championship. Fact to consider : The current Trojan Seniors have not experienced a loss to end their season since Middle School - that's how many State Championships in a row have been won by the Garden City Girls. A true dynasty at the High School Sports level.
Class C Championship : CBA-Syracuse 0, Mount Sinai (Pregame)

All season, there has been discussion about the youth of the Mount Sinai program. Four eighth graders and seven ninth graders are on the varsity roster for Long Island's Class C state finalist.
Class C Championship : Mount Sinai 2, CBA-Syracuse 1 (First Half)

Goals from Pirreca and Dillon give Mount Sinai the early advantage with fifteen minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
Class C Championship : Mount Sinai 4, CBA-Syracuse 3 (First Half)

Shayna Pirreca (sister) scores Mount Sinai's third. Fitzgerald gets Mount Sinai's fourth goal with fourteen remaining. Christian Brothers Academy nets a pair to bring the score back to 4-3 with ten minutes remaining.

CBA equalizes with eight minutes remaining and Coach Leonard from Mount Sinai calls a much needed time out to get the troops settled.
Class C Championship : Mount Sinai 5, CBA-Syracuse 5 (First Half)

A goal by Burns from a Dillon pass takes the 5-4 advantage which is met my a CBA score by Poplowski who is having a strong game on the attack. Two minutes remaining the half.
Class C Championship : Mount Sinai 5, CBA-Syracuse 5 (Halftime)
Class C Championship : Mount Sinai 8, CBA-Syracuse 6 (Second Half)

Dillon scores on the roll with eighteen remaining. Also gets the go-ahead goal with thirteen remaining on incredible pass from eighth-grader Mitchel. Parents are quite loud and very as this match has turned extremely physical. (Has been very physical from the outset - field refs have done a great job letting the girls play which keeping a lid on this pressure cooker.) Dillon scores her third straight with just under twelve remaining.
Class C Championship : Mount Sinai 8, CBA-Syracuse 8 (Second Half)

Two from CBA-Syracuse level the score - less than nine minutes remaining.
Class C Championship : CBA-Syracuse 9, Mount Sinai 8 (Second Half)

Less than one minute remaining. Mount Sinai on the timeout to plot how to handle the next drive.
Class C Championship : CBA-Syracuse 9, Mount Sinai 8 (Final)

Class A Championship : Northport 1, Pittsford 0 (First Half)

Torrential rains have hit the SUNY/Cortland area. Reports are that the match will resume at 5:30pm, approximately 85 minutes from now.

Class A Championship : Pittsford 5, Northport 5 (Halftime)

Like some of the heavyweight battles we have seen in Syracuse today on the boy's side, every time the Tigers score one, the Panthers have an answer. Gilroy to Magnuson brings the score back to level. Three goals in the final minute of first half action.

Stat of the Game : To show how balanced these two teams are, there have been a total of ten first half goals .... from ten different goal scorers.

Class A Championship : Northport 10, Pittsford 9 (Overtime)

Game resumed at about 8:15pm. Game went into overtime tied at eight. Northport scored four unanswered to take the lead and Pittsford responded with one. Approximately one minute remaining in the match.

Thirty seconds remain in the second three minute overtime period. Sudden death will follow if needed.
Class A Championship : Northport 11, Pittsford 10 (Final, Overtime)

Congratulations to Northport for winning this match that took over five hours to complete today. We will be tracking the reported injury to Gilroy which is being reported by Newsday as a potential ACL injury. Laura Albanese tweets, "Hearing Shannon Gillroy, girls lax phenom, tore her ACL scoring a go-ahead goal in the state final. Nothport wins, 11-10 in 2OT."

Terrible call with the game on the line where the refs were clearly involved int the outcome. Dillon split the double team cleanly, got hit in the head as she crossed through, and somehow got called for the charge. As ref crews go, this groups seemed challenged throughout.

The Women who called the charge was a ref in the Mt Sinai semi final game. She was even worse in that game. She called a number of phantom charges before the last horrific call. It is a shame when a ref feels the need to be part of the outcome. You never want to blame the refs but this one is tough not to.

I was there too I would say Hauppauge,Mt.Sinai. The 2 best player from those team didnt win.We had this debate at or table and we all agreed. how many people felt the way we did!!!!
Who did win?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but I think All-Americans are selected by sports media, not by coaches, same as the All-State honor.

The best player from MT Sinai won the award. Most goals doesn't always mean best player.

So a Mt. Sinai girl won and someone is disgruntled and thinks the wrong player won? Because the non-winner scored more goals? Just trying to follow along here.

I still don't know who won.

I think the Fitzgerald kid was named All American from Mt Sinai. Apparrently there were a couple of tables who thought other Mt Sinai kids were more worthy. But they didn't say which ones.

That's a link to the official list of All-Americans for our area.

Here is how All-Americans are selected
(from this link: http://www.uslacrosse.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=7nw4o9D-EtU%3d&tabid=1004 )

ALL-AMERICAN PROCESS PROCESS FOR DETERMINING THE NUMBER OF ALL-AMERICANS PER CHAPTER
1) Head Varsity Coaches must join or renew by April 1st of each spring season so that their membership runs through the current high school lacrosse season including the post season. A) Example – a head varsity coach whose membership expires May 31st or earlier of the current
season and the season ends in June must renew by the April 1st deadline. However, a coach in the same league whose membership expires June 30th or later is not required to renew in order to be counted in the determining of All-American numbers. *Note – this deadline applies to coaches’ eligibility to nominate All-Americans and All Academic Team. This registration also affects how many teams your sub region is allotted for national tournament the following year.
2) All-American numbers are determined based on the number of active Head Varsity Coach Members within the chapter.
A) For every 4 girl’s head varsity coach members within a chapter, the chapter is allotted 1 All- American selection. Example – 12 girl’s head varsity coach members equals 3 Girl’s All American selections. 15 girl’s head varsity coach members would round up to 4 Girl’s All American selections. (AA numbers are rounded up at .5 or greater and rounded down under .5)
The fact that Jen Porretto from Hauppauge did not receive All American honors was a travesty. Led Long Island in assists, 4th in total points, 11th in goals. Anyone who watched her play this year would agree she and Ranftle were the best players on the field at every game (with the exception of the Eastport playoff - DeMartino took those honors, and Garden City playoff game) . She made her teammates better. She hustled on offense and defense. A travesty!

You hate to say some other kid doesn't deserve it, but I agree totally. I swa 5 of their games and I thought she was overall the best player on Hauppaugue. Rantfle was great offensively, but Porretto was all over the field. Great player!
The AA selection process is flawed and politics are always in play... Catherine Dickinson, junior from Garden City is the only player on the GC team to start every game since her freshman year and was not selected, most unselfish player on the team... US lacrosse does not appreciate team players.
Did Jen Porretto receive 5 yellow cards during the season? This would disqualify her from AA selection.
Records indicate Porretto was issued four yellow cards for the 2011 Spring season...

For those that were unaware, it was confirmed that Shannon Gilroy did in fact suffer a torn ACL. Reports from her coach and others indicate that surgery will be within the next several days. BOTC wishes a strong recovery for this talented young lady and we hope to see her in action at Florida sometime soon!
Jennifer Porretto of Hauppauge named Suffolk County Player of the Year.

Abigail Zeltmann of Hauppauge named Suffolk County Coach of the Year.

Contrats on the well deserved awards!!!!

JP deserved All-American Honors. Unfortunately she plays for the LI Express and is not a YJ so no All-American for her.

Did you actually take a moment to read the All-American criteria that we specifically posted for our BOTC Readers? If you had taken the time to go through the criteria, you would know that club affiliation is not part of the evaluation process.
I think the post was tongue in cheek in regards to club politics. Jen plays for Express.
JP is a Yellow jacket
Long Island Player of the Year, First in Assists. Not only was Jennifer Porretto best all around player on the field, but most unselfish. In the Garden City LI championship, Hauppauge was ahead until she got the yellow. Ask the GC team who they feared the most; not making the All-American is just ridiculous. Ohio State is fortunate to have her.
