Bandits by far? Interesting when they have rising 5th graders play on the team! They should dominate other rising 4th graders. Especially when they use older siblings to ensure a win. Not impressed. Unfortunately this takes the credit due away from those kids who truly belong in that age group. False advertising to market team as best by far when they encourage parents of older kids to leave their kids back so the can play on the team. Sad.

Had an 11 year old from crush (you can prob guess who) playing this weekend on the team.

I'm not sure what went on this week end, but don't throw away the rest of the summer. They are an excellent team for their age. They have won many tournaments this summer.

Of course they're an excellent team especially when they have a rising fifth grade goalie and they used a kid from Crush to help out. They tried to hide it by having the kid wear someone else's pinnie. This is really pathetic at the fourth grade level.

The Outlaws team is a great team too. The 2nd 91 team not so much.

Everybody likes to bash 91. For you to say that you obviously were not at the game. Both those teams played great games so why not just leave it at that. Unless the Outlaws coach is telling you your the A team and you can't understand how the 91 B team gives you so much trouble.

The kid is 11 and should actually be going into 6th grade but was held back, playing with rising 4th grade and against rising 5th grade, no excuses ....pathetic

Then they should have ONLY 9 year olds playing, not 11 year olds who should be going into 6th grade ....nothing to do with the kids, its the coach.....

I'm thinking he was clear to play if he was a rising 5 th in a rising 5th gr bracket despite all else. Do you think none of the other teams that day had kids held back a yr before they started school?

"other teams do it"makes it right? It would be like my young 6'1" 190 lb 8th grader playing against 6th grade kids . Its just wrong .

Age based format works best. If it's Sept 1st 2014 and your child is still 9 you play 2023. I don't care about what grade a kid is in. I have no problem playing against any rising 5th grader for next year in the 2023 group as long as he fits the U9 criteria. At least it's age appropriate.

Bandits 6 - Badgers 3. Laxfest final. And even though it was 6-0 in Maryland in early June the Badgers held them to 6 goals. Not saying the Badgers are the better team, Bandits are and will be until a 2023/u9 the beats them. But the Badgers can certainly match up.

I was told lot of the kids on the Bandits DO NOT play and that the Coach keeps about 6-7 kids (his own and other close friends) on the field all the time. I heard the Badgers played every player an equal amount of time and still competed. If you are thinking of switching clubs; Badgers is the place to be. You will get tons of practices from September all the way through the last game of summer ball.

Badgers are good but not at same level. Until they beat the bandits at least once not in same convo.

Great! Leave the Badgers out. Better club, better coaches, and better team environment. Success is measured differently. Not just by saying your the best "by far".

How can you say "not in same convo"? The badgers were beating them 2-0 and it was 4-3 with 2 mins to go in the game with the final of 6-3.

How is the TLI team at this level.

Saw them play yesterday at Lax4BackPax. Couple of kids with some skill. The coaching was not impressive at all. A lot of yelling at kids and screaming at them for mistakes made on the field. Seemed to be no coaching going on. Plainedge team was up by a couple when I was watching. Don't know the final, but they are an average B team.

Was impressed by the Plainedge team, couple of very good players and they moved the ball well for a town team. Seen them at a couple of town tournaments this year.

Plainedge is a solid town team. Bayport, Smithtown, Connetquot, Sayville also very good competitive town teams that will beat several travel clubs at this level. Not A teams, but good B squads.

Plainedge plays there 4th & 5th graders in the 3rd grade brackets at theses tournaments so i hope they look good against 3rd graders..

The South shore Thunder boys looked great! and looked Like they were very well coached..

Your out of your mind! I am the coach of the 2023 Plainedge Maniacs team and I will never risk the health and well being of anyone on the field by playing a boy who is not the correct age or grade. I coach the game to these boys and stress honor and sportsmanship. Anyone that knows me knows that. Step out from behind the Anonymous shield and put a name to that complete and total lie. Name one instance ever that the 2023 team played with older players on their sidelines. You are taking away from the great group of kids and families that we have in the Plainedge community that are trying to build a good lacrosse program.

South Shore Thunder has some of the best 2023 kids on Long Island. They play for elite travel teams as well as their town. SST does a nice job. Kudos to their kids and families that supported a great day of lax for a good cause.

You should have them take the 4th grade stickers off of their helmets then... Gives other teams the wrong idea.

Many smaller towns have combined teams during the season just to field a team.So that 2023 kid may very well play on the 4th grade team.

What stickers are you talking about? All Plainedge helmets are the same. Some of the boys may have stickers from there travel team but nothing that would indicate a particular grade.

Anyone know if the Bandits or Honey Badgers are looking to make significant changes to their teams? Are the tryouts just money grabs or do kids that were not those teams last year have a real shot at making it?

Is this a serious question? Neither of these teams are going to make significant changes. Maybe upgrade 2 or 3 players to add depth to the bench. Unless you have been approached you are trying out for the B teams.

it's a serious question. When you advertise tryouts for a team team and charge money parents should know if there are any spots open. Otherwise its called fraud. clubs should have to post what positions are available

It cuts both ways. If they made significant changes plenty of parents on here would argue there is no loyalty. I think the reality is if the team is successful they will keep the core group and probably turnover the bottom 6 or 7 roster spots to either add depth or more likely to replace turnover for kids that leave who were not playing many minutes.

Wishful thinking dad... If a kid tries out and he's better than your kid then your kid is gone. You're going to see a tremendous influx of new talent trying out this year now that the boys are a bit older. Traditionally, 4th grade is when most parents consider travel lax. The little kids that could catch in 2nd grade made Bandits and HB. I will bet you that you'll see about 8 new kids on each team. The coaches don't care about you OR little Johnny. They want the best kids available.

Time for a reality check...

It is frustrating for sure. The elite teams are definitely more of an invite process, but I am sure if a kid wows the evaluators, there is a chance of making a team that didn't have an opening. Either they will be added or bump a player. However, they are advertising try outs- not for specific teams, so I don't think it is fraud. A call to the director may be able to help clear up which teams are looking for which positions.

I have friends with kids on both teams. I've heard that Bandits are looking to upgrade more size at middie and a second goalie. HB are looking to upgrade at defense. Both are looking for more physical lefty attackmen.

How would anyone know completely what is available. On the other hand, you are asking about some of the best if not the best teams in the area, so you must believe your kid has some RP3 in him. Why not roll the dice, it is going to be a challenge for your boy. Let him see how he stacks up against the best. Maybe he is right there and needs a little work on his weak hand, maybe he needs to play with more (or less) control. It might be good for him to see how they play/practice. At a minimum he will get two reasonable runs in and a pinnie (ok he has enough pinnies I am sure). Good Luck, and remember that $85 or $100 is not what it used to be.

Every top team adds. But remember when these teams played at the 2023/U9 level won every game. The only two games the Badgers lost was to the Bandits. That means they have talented kids. However, if kids show up that are clearly better, they'll take them. That means catching and throwing with the off hand for starters.

There are kids from both the Honey Badgers and Bandits looking to go elsewhere. Sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side, but its worth a look. The True Blue rising 4th grade 2023 team is apparently creating a buzz with new additions from other programs. I heard they have kids committed from other elite teams that will allow this team to be significantly better and compete. Tryouts will be exciting!

Honey Badger coaches are holding per-tryout practices for their team and they are opening it up to any rising 4th grader looking to join their team. I think it's a great idea to allow the kids a more intimate look instead of getting lost in the 100 's of kids at tryouts.

the reality check is there will be 100+ kids trying out for 8 spots. Your kid will get
limited opportunities to shine so will need to stand out when given the chance. Lots of variables. Last year the tryouts were very unorganized.

It's not that spots are available, it's your son having to standout and take a spot away. That's how this works.

What are talking about. My son is on the team also and if you read your emails, you'll see the event is a practice for existing Badgers with an open invite for others who can play at that level. Stop being so paranoid. It's a great process

My son is more than happy as a Bandit. The 91 tryout is in another league compared to Express as far as organization and each kid getting a fair look. They did in two tryouts what Express needed 5 tryouts to do.

Been there already, express takes up to 10 new kids a year until about 5th grade and then starts narrowing it down to the 3-5 positions they need to fill. I know it's tough medicine for parents of express kids in the 3-4 grade, but express is not a feel good organization, they are all about winning. They will take bigger, tougher faster kids year after year, no loyalty. I am not putting them down, it's the right strategy to be the best but do so e sole searching, is your kid in the top 10 on the team? If not he will get cut this year or next.

Listen, if you want to be on a team where 5 kids never leave the field and you're one of the 5, great. If you aren't, you're a fool to stay. They are 3rd/4th graders. Sitting on the sideline is teaching them nothing. There were games when a Bandit player never got on the field after traveling 5 hours and paying for a hotel. You're paying for the other kids to get better. Wake up.

This is the time when your kid should be playing in games and learning lacrosse IQ, not just being on a winning team. What good does that do him if he never contributes to the wins?

That says it all...the kids are in the 3/4 grade- let them learn and HAVE FUN.

Unfortunately, you are correct this is the reality for 91 and Express. Difference is 91 gets there sooner, so if you think the "everyone plays" game plan for express is here to stay, ask around. And no, your team or coach isn't different. Express appears more welcoming at the 3rd grade level then each year they cut 8-10, unequal playing time until they get to the best 20 they can find, and only 13 play. Difference between 91 and express is 91 doesn't pretend, they do this at 3rd grade, express Does it over the course of 2 years.

Well, the one thing I've decided after reading this thread is that my son won't be trying out for either HB or Bandits. You're all insane. Don't you have more important things to worry about than 3rd/4th grade lacrosse? Anyone have any helpful suggestions/comments regarding any of the other organizations?

Don't let a FEW people pollute your views. The Badgers really have a great lax enviorment and the team is very good. And I say that honestly. My kid didn't start, but played enough. However, the development is off the charts. We practiced at least 50 times and the coaches are fully dedicated. I encourage you to draw your own conclusions. And without knowing anything about the Bandits I would say give them the benefit of the doubt as well. Ps this is travel lax you'll encounter crazy parents everywhere.

Parents, please have your sons play another sport. Stop specializing in only lax and your child will not only be better at lacrosse but will well rounded. Some of these programs are focusing too much on practice, practice, practice. Lacrosse used to be a spring sport!!!!!

Legacy is a C team at best.

It is a non obligatory practice to get kids ready for the tryout. Oh and by the way if you are interested in the team, your welcome as well. Everyone who has been through this wishes there was more of this from other teams. Again, completely voluntary.

True Blue 2023 is being coached by Adelphi Assistant Head Coach Joe Catalanotti this year. How many other programs have a college coach whose team was ranked number 1 in the nation coaching them? Don't be fooled by the name of a club team. What really matters is who is coaching the team that your kid is on!

Commute may be closer and tuition less but be prepared to get a lot less. Not the real deal at all. You'll hear a big push from TB for the next few weeks. And once they cash your check you won't hear anything at all.

I know that True Blue 2023 imploded for a fact, and a great majority of the boys left.

Ok you let me know how that goes after next year. He should not. He should not be coaching little kids. He knows the game of lacrosse, but he is better with older kids. Plus I would be shocked that he is there the whole time during the season. I am not sure if many parents including me are willing to see what happens. I feel bad for the 2 older teams he promised it is big year for them. My son plays on one of the teams with a great coach. I don't know all of the staff, but from what I hear they have several former All Americans, HS coaches and and 2 former World team and Hall of Fame players. Doesn't always mean good coaches but I would stack them up against any other staff. Keep in mind, the person that wrote this is just angry. Take the hate somewhere else. If your that unhappy move on and let it go. Man you have to give it up.

Not exactly the same thing, unless of course they were AA in both HS and College.

That said, take it on a case by case basis. Great coaches are great coaches, some were great players some were not. Base your opinion of the coach on how they coach, not on how they played.

I just took that from their web page. My son was in a clinic there and I was speaking with George Powers about the Hurricanes. Thought he would be part of it but then heard he is express and wouldn't leave. Either way hurricanes seem like a last minute thought at this time to counteract Igloo for some reason. I don't know the back story. I just sense by the way one is offering all inclusive and the other breaking down what you get for the extra money.

He has his friend's Pequa kid and some of the other TB players that he grabbed to help him start the 2023 team. The rest is a crap shoot. Ironically, O'keefe and Alexander will be fighting for the Syosset kids. Good luck in the other grades.

I heard from one of the players parents on the team that The assistant coach for true blue 2023 is leaving, and he is taking a couple of kids with him the rest of the team is staying intact , I heard that Cook is still w the true blue organization in fact his son plays for one of the older teams .

Took my son to that LIT Blue Shark tryout and was very impressed with the program. We are hoping to be a part of this new first year age group and grow withe the coaches and other boys and parents for years to come. They had a great turnout considering it's a new team. One of the directors told me they were just a few players away from competing the roster. Hope some of you will come down this Saturday to see what they are all about. It would be nice to have a fresh start with a club that is all about development .

Good thing the Hurricanes got Okeffe's friend to bring the TB 2023 kids to get that team going. That might be their only single year team after the comically low turnout out tryouts. Have fun with that. Karma is a [lacrosse].

Any feedback on Igloo 2023 tryouts?

About 40 kids. Was on a different field so can't comment on quality

Igloo had 32 kids including their 1 goalie yesterday. All the kids that were there yesterday seemed good. At the end they seemed to break the kids up into group 1 and group 2. I am not sure if this was A players versus others, but the top players that I saw were put in the head coaches 4v3 drill. If they can get the top 20/23 players to play for them, then this team will be very competitive in this age group.

How were the 91 tryouts?

My son made 91 Warriors. First time into the travel circuit. What should I expect? Will the team be competitive? Anyone know when they post tournament schedules?

Warriors are a VERY good B team ... you should have a good experience. Plan on mostly local tourneys and Lax fest! lol....

Warriors had a lot of talent but lacked coaching last year so top players left early. The one coach they had was a very nice guy so people like stayed. This is understandable being the Bandits step brother and being the B team for the age group. However most families seem happy there for whatever reason. Promised an additional coach this year. If you are happy with the cost and what you get, it is a very good place to start.

What's going on with 2023 Honey Badgers? I heard they brought in some great talent and will be much better this upcoming year. They were good last year and now that they added better kids, seems to me this team will be a good one.

Sorry, but if you want to include Outlaws then you have to put Garden City, and Smithtown town teams before them. The kids out of Massapequa in the town 4th grade team could also be ahead.

So the Bandits lost to nobody at their age and the Badgers were 18-2 at there age. And the Outlaws were the next best team. Followed by the Barracudas, Legacy, and Warriors.

My Son's team played the Honey Badgers and Team 32 last year and lost to both. I'd love to see those 2 teams play. I thought the Express team was a little better. Plus we overheard several of Team 32 parents talking about how much more the coaches kids play and how they always have the ball.

Badgers beat 32 6-1 last year. And if you're referrring to the Badgers with that comment, it honestly is not true. Badgers playing time is very balanced and they move the ball.

Cheaters entering town tournaments...lying cheats. No tryouts because they are a phoney team.

Was a group of travel hockey players from around long island who also play lacrosse. Came together for one tournament without ever practicing together. The tournament director was well aware of how the team was put together, however some people were not happy when they won the tournament.

That's because they entered a 3rd grade bracket with 4th graders! Represented themselves as being from 1 town and only had 2 players actually from that town!!!! Cheaters.

From what I saw last year, bandits and badgers were the 2 elite team, with bandits having the upper hand. However, there are probably 5 teams that can challenge for that third spot. 32, outlaws, warriors, legacy and cudas. All depends on the changes that were/we're not made to the rosters. To say anything else before practice and tournaments would be a complete guess. Don't think empire is in the running yet because it didn't look like the talent level at tryouts was high enough yet. But they're brand new and a lot can change.

Don't sleep on that Igloo team that had a lot of good talent at the tryout.

Lying cheats. I hope your kids enjoyed the stolen shirts. And did the guy who named the team pay any royalties to the company that makes the chillaxing clothing line? No? That would make them lying, stealing, cheats.

Two new teams with great coaching and tons of practice scheduled are Hurricanes and Empire. I give it two years before their coaching and upgrading kicks in to be power house teams. I love seeing good coaches building new teams to diversify the playing fields and stop the false team openings from large club teams by charging $100 to have 50+ kids tryout for a spot when there is none.

I find it hard to believe that there were not openings on all of the teams for the right players. Bottom line is that in order to come onto an existing team that's been successful, a kid really has to be a standout and impress the coaches to the point that they believe that kid is worth getting rid of another kid on the already existing roster. I think a lot of people are guilty of wearing "parent goggles" and believe their kid is much better than what he or she really is.

I have a feeling the 3rd spot isn't as up for grabs as you think. I heard 32 lost their best player to Igloo I'm sure that had something to do with what was posted earlier about coaches favoring their own kids

Too many kids that play 2023 that are exceptional are not true 4th graders. Most 4th graders are born in 2005, which is the actual birth year. You are finding more and more kids that are born in 2004, and in some cases 2003. Someone should patrol this and adjust the rules with a governing body. I'm sure USA lacrosse has rules in place and Long Island and most states do not follow. Kids will eventually catch up and I'm sure the 2004 kids were not held back for lax but kids who are older hold a tremendous advantage both physically and mentally. Play your age!!!

I agree with your comments - if you looked at the successful teams at this age group birth certificates you will see 2004 birthdates -it should be monitored like every other sport by DOB.

Crazy to think adults come on here write things pretending to be someone else to start problems

My son and his best friend have been playing together for 5 years now. They have been in the same class several years and are both excellent lacrosse players. They tried out for the same travel club and made the team. My son's best fried was deemed not ready (socially or academically) to begin kindergarten with the boys his age and it was recommended that he wait till the following year to begin school. Naturally, his parents followed the advice of the professionals and held him back. On Long Island, travel clubs are grade based, not age. Say what you will about it, but that's just the way is. If you look at every team roster, you'll find a player that was held back. It's very common. It seems that parents only complain when that player is the best on the field. Just because the older boy on your team is mediocre doesn't absolve your team from the fact that they are playing an older child. Keep in mind, these clubs are adhering to the rules of the tournaments. Please, stop complaining about it and exaggerating this child's age to say that he should be in 6th or 7th grade. You seem foolish and petty.

Personally, I would disagree that this is 'miniscule'. As far as youth lacrosse is concerned this is a very important topic. You might not have been at the Express or 91 tryouts but I can assure you that there were a few hundred other people at both of those, spending $100 a pop so that they might be lucky enough to pay those organizations in excess of $2,500 for their children to join their teams. This is a business and this is sports and this is competitive and when you put all of those things together, people will look for any edge they can find. If that edge is buying the latest equipment or taking their kids to private training or, dare I say it, holding their children back a year for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with academics, guess what, they will do it. And by the way, if in the long run this potentially helps their sons not only get into a Duke or a Hopkins or a Notre Dame but also gets them scholarship money at those institutions and a network that will benefit their long term careers and social lives, that is a pretty huge incentive.

I understand the analogy of the child who is held back for academic or social reasons and I empathize with that situation, I'm sure it cannot be easy for the parents or the child to be faced with something like that. However, if we were just talking about a boy or two per team that would be one thing but this is pervasive and has become a part of the culture of the sport. I could name a dozen boys from my town alone who have been held back simply for lacrosse.

Finally, if age wasn’t an important issue then why do sports like soccer, baseball, hockey and football all bother with strict requirements? Lacrosse is the only sport where it is possible to have two children who are as much as 18 months apart competing in the same game. It’s one thing when they hit puberty but it’s quite another when they are 8, 9, 10 years old.

Feel free to bury your head in the sand and ignore it but don't try to diminish it to those of us who think it is a problem that needs to be addressed. If something as 'miniscule' as the Faceoff rule can be changed, then this can and should be changed as well.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time but if you don't think that this is a significant issue in youth lacrosse then fine, that's your opinion. You should just recognize that a lot of people disagree with you.

In the example you gave where your 7th grade son competed against Varsity athletes, that was a conscious decision and everyone at the event knew what was going on. You and your son went into the event with the knowledge that older boys would be competing. There was no competitive advantage there, in fact it was probably looked on as a good thing: check out how well this 7th grader is doing against the varsity team!

That is a much different scenario than when you have a boy who turned 10 years old in June competing against 8 and 9 year olds at a 2023 tournament. The biggest issue I have with it, frankly, is from an evaluation standpoint. How do you know whether the 10 year old is doing well b/c he is legitimately talented or if he's really just an average player but he is older and more experienced? And vice versa for the 8 year old, maybe he is a better than average player but looks less than that b/c he is competing against bigger, stronger, faster boys.

As far as the $$$'s are concerned. Look at the list of team's on the right of this board. I don't think a single one of them cost less than $1,000 for the season. I'm not sure where your son is playing lax but it sure isn't on this Island.

There are two consistent counters that people bring up whenever someone questions the current grade based system:

1. You are a whining baby whose son must stink. Tell your 8, 9, 10 year old boy to man up! Deal with it, life isn’t fair.
2. My son is in this grade and was born xxxx and we’re not cheating.

In regards to the first point, you’re probably right my son just needs to grow some hair on his chest and be a man. And yes, he does stink and I am a whiner so I guess you’re argument is right and mine is wrong.

As far as the second point goes, I am not calling out anybody for playing within the rules. I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with a parent of a 4th grader playing their son on a 2023 club. Those are the rules as they stand and I would never argue with anyone on that. I would only question why it is that the rules are set up like this? In a grade based system, you can have a child born in January 2004 competing against one born in October 2005 in a 2023 tournament. Why is it right to have a potentially 22 month age advantage over another boy? What is fair about that?

The problem with a grade based format vs an age based format is that grade based can be manipulated and let's not be naive, there are plenty of parents who make the decision to hold their children back just for lacrosse. Age based cannot be manipulated.

What is so unreasonable about going with the ‘U’ systems that so many other sports use? Children who are skilled enough to ‘play up’ would be allowed to but no one can ‘play down’. If you want to capture the ‘grade based’ ages, then simply make it based on a Dec 1 – Nov 30th year, which aligns with many of the New [lacrosse] State grade cutoffs.

The 23 month scenario seems a little far fetched. But I suppose they are out there. Why not hold the October baby back ? What's the rush to get these kids into school for. If its a matter of not paying daycare or something like that let the kid repeat kindergarten. Sorry I just think the parent of the October baby is not looking out for the best interest of their child.

December 2004 in New [lacrosse] is a 4th grader. Most districts have a 12/1 cutoff.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the table below is from the US Lacrosse website.Isn't the difference between U11 and U9 potentially a 24 month difference? How does age based change anything?

This would make things worse. You could potentially have a team 2 grades higher playing you. US Laxcrosse would have to come up with something better then this before anyone would want to switch from grade based.

Yeah, not sure of the logic behind the US Lacrosse age groupings but for some reason they chose to skip the 'even' years: U8, U10, U12 & U14. Add those in and all of a sudden we would have a very logical methodology for grouping our boys.

My son plays on the Bandits..... this is all [lacrosse]. We have two holdbacks. And it's because of early academics, not to be a better lax players. People like to rip the Bandits because those kids, for the most part, are better than the kids on every other team. Is the coach a lunatic? Absolutely. Do we travel too much? No doubt about it? Is is way too expensive? Probably. But tell me another 4th grade youth lacrosse team that has the opportunity to play for a coach with that kind of pedigree. Will it be worth it in the long run? I have no idea. But I think if he continues to grow as a player and is fortunate enough to stay on the team then he is getting the absolute best coaching available on the east coast.

As a Warrior parent for two years, I can tell you that they are GREATLY improved from last year! We're looking forward to a much more competitive season this spring. I am very impressed with the new additions and think we will be considered one of the top teams. Time and tourneys will tell.

All the 2023 teams had to move up or drop out. Why shouldn't they play up? B bracket and they played for two years as a team already. No real competition in this tournament bracket. A couple of the teams listed were just formed and this will be their very first tournament that they ever played in. They should win at least half the games. If not then they should find a new team.

Actually, there was a huge amount of turnover for the Warriors. 8 or 9 upgrades at various positions. Trying to gel with their fall practices. Very nice group of boys and parents seem very rational . Hoping to be competitive this year and build on it moving forward.

Congrats to all of the boys who got out in the cold and played some great lacrosse! A special congrats goes out to the Warriors on the win. Say what you will about the teams they played, the fact remains that they played in, and won, a 5th grade bracket. For those of us who have played lax as youths, we know that playing against bigger and stronger kids in a very physical sport poses a unique set of challenges. The boys played very well and I look forward to an exciting season!

Say what you want, but the 5th grade championship game at Mustang between TLI & Warriors was very exciting to watch. Back and forth play, both team played hard. It end tied 4 each and followed with braveheart. It was fun to watch congrats to both team on a well fought game.

Like I said... they beat bigger and stronger kids. 5th graders. And if you have even a light grip on reality you understand the difference that a year makes at their level. I'm not criticizing the teams that they played. Each team had some good players and some that are developing. What I AM saying is that the Warriors played very well and showed a lot of heart in the process. Your kid obviously lost or you wouldn't be commenting. I love when people get on here and make a statement with no real solid foundation of information. We practice once a week. Twice leading up to a tournament to cover game plan. We never have a full team at any one practice because alot our kids play other sports. Regardless of all that; aren't we told Practice makes Perfect??? We are taught that if we practice, we perfect things. Not sure what the whole comment about practices is all about.

The Bandits will go 2-3 times a week when they can also. Take a page from 2 teams that are the best teams in the grade; PRACTICE. You are mostly annoyed that you don't practice enough. 3 or maybe 4 practices since tryouts is ridiculous. Not going to get better doing that. It showed.

I think it's great you feel that way. Every team who has not beaten the Bandits or Badgers should feel that way. They should never feel like they can't ever be good enough to catch the team ahead. If so, why try?

Today the 2 teams to beat are the Badgers and Bandits and no other team can say anything bad like criticize their practice/training methods until they can prove otherwise. Funny part about this whole discussion is that the coaches of these teams know that and have respect for one another and the boys they coach. It's uneducated or ill-informed parents who stir the pot and make the whole experience an unpleasant one.

So great, you're with the right club. The one that does not practice alot. Badgers and Bandits have a different philosophy which is proven to be the right one based on past performance. It sounds as if you are a bit "Jealous" that they practice alot and you don't otherwise why care about it.

The same reason they waste money on shooting clinics, defense clinics, etc etc. They're scared! Most of them probably haven't been through the process yet, and don't realize there's a natural demand for LI talent regardless of what club you play for. Not to mention all the individual showcases, and college prospect days that are available. The landscape is changing just don't burn the kids out before they get there.

So why do we have to watch 2023? We've been watching for years and nothing has changed. When have the younger kids grown up to beat Express at the older ages?

4th graders practicing lax 2-3/week in the fall? great for winning tournaments and being the top 4th grade team. not great for long term development. guarantee many of these kids will see lax as job before they get to HS. ask any college coach and they say they prefer multi-sport athletes. playing full time all year long starting in 3-4th grade? crazy

Son plays for Empire and didn't really know what to expect. Proud of the way the boys competed with reallly not being together too long. Being down by only one at the half against the Express Badgers who's coach btw is an out of control lunatic who takes away from his team with his childish antics. Overall really encouraging after us being in a bad situation last year

How much practicing do your kids' teams do over the winter? Is there an extra fee or is it included in club costs?

As a town team I will try to get an outdoor practice all winter. (weather permitting) And one or two indoor in a gym plus one game typically every other week.
A club team will either have it incorporated in the cost or as an added extra fee. Depends on the club.

The teams that practice usually practice at least once a week and there is usually an additional fee added to cover the costs of the indoor facility.

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful. My son's team didn't practice in the winter least year. They just had "elite training" sessions that were pretty expensive. This year, new team, and the coach is practicing weekly. I was just wondering if that was the norm. Thanks again.

It is the norm if you want to win right away....that way they come out of the box ready to go in the spring.

If you practice all winter as a team and in the spring your kids still lose, find a better team and more specifically another coach.

Thats a simple view. At this age a team with two or three studs can and will take over a game and win. That does not mean they are a great team or they have a great coach. Losing after practicing all winter happens. How good are the athletes? If you practice all winter and do not IMPROVE move on. Winning and losing is not the only barometer. If it is the one you use with 4th grade lacrosse you are a tool. Teams will change dramatically as more come out for travel. A coach that you enjoy and teaches should be much more important than winning this spring

These are not even really rankings. They are people's opinions. It's great entertainment. If you want real rankings take it from myhockeyrankings.com. See below. There is a formula that has to be done not peoples opinion. Try and have one of you gurus apply it to lax. Merry Christmas.




We receive emails weekly asking some variation of the questions, "why is my team ranked number x?" The answer is always the same, it's because of who you have played (SCHED) and how well you have done against that competition (AGD). It is that simple, but in a few instances teams may not be ranked properly because of error(s) in their list of recorded game scores. In this Did You Know, we will take a look at a team's rating/ranking from the perspective of the Math Page and how to identify possible errors.

First, let's be clear about where you can find the math page. The math page is accessed by clicking on the team details icon ()in the details column to the far right of every ranked/listed team. Once you click this and reach the team information page, you will see a table of game scores at the bottom of the page. Starting with the 2013-14 season, there are three tabs at the top of the scores box. The default/first tab is the simple listing of all the game scores. The second tab is the "Rating Math" tab, or what MYHockey refers to as the "Math Page". The third tab is the Last 10 Math page which shows you a modified version of the math page specific to a team's last ten games.

Who you play is essentially your strength of schedule. Mathematically, this is the average rating of each of your opponents. Assuming that your team has not had any games updated or deleted since the last weekly update, the SCHED is clearly displayed on the math page and is the bottom cell under "Opp Rating". This number should match your team's SCHED as found on the rankings page. If the number seems lower than it should be, I'd strongly encourage you to review all of your opponents and their ratings. It is possible that your game has been input against a weaker team from the club you played. For example, you may have played a club's "AA" team, but the game is entered against their "A" level team. Identifying the wrong opponent will not only make your team's rating incorrect, it might impact your entire league/division.

How well you do against your opponent is translated into your team's average goal differential or AGD. Using a maximum goal differential of +/- seven (7) for any single game, AGD is simply the average goal differential of all of your games. This column is found just to the left of the SCHED or Opp Rating column on the Math page and should once again match the number found in the rankings unless your team has had one or more game scores correction/removed since the last weekly update.

Your team's rating for any single game can be (and is) computed on the Math page. The Points column tells you how rating points your team earned for a given game and the +/- column tells you how much better or worse than your rating that performance was. In theory, all the +/- numbers average out to 0.00, but with rounding there can be a small residual number in this column at the bottom. You are encouraged to look through your games, especially at games were your team performed +/- 2.00 or more. These may have simply been good or bad performances, but it is also possible that these are games where your opponent has been incorrectly identified.

Let's say that you remember attended and remember a game your team played and thought it one or your team's better games, but you have a large (more than 2.00) negative number in the +/- column. As I indicated previously, this is a candidate for an erroneously identified opponent. If, by looking at the game, you know that the opponent is properly identified, not further research is needed, but if you are not sure, here is my suggestion. Click on the opponent's name. This will bring you to the opponent's team information page. Once there, see if there is a team website listed. If so, I encourage you to go to the team website and see if you can find any evidence of the game score or schedule being posted on the team website. Some team websites contain none of this information, but you are simply looking for anything that either positively confirms this is the correct opponent or pretty clearly indicates that the team played someone else at the same time or was in a completely different city on that day. If there is no team website listed and the team is part of a larger association as identified by MYHockey, then you will see the association name which is a link to the association information page. Click the link taking you to this page. Now see if you see additional teams at the age level you played. Virtually all associations have a website in MYHockey were you can then go and check out to see if you can find any additional information from the club website. Assuming you can't find any team schedules, there is one more trick we employ to try to ascertain the exact identity of an opponent. If you have access to the scoresheet from the game, you will have access to the opponent's head coaches name. Most association websites list their team coaches. You can try to use this information to match your exact opponent.

MYHockey has been doing the above research for more than a decade. Sometimes it is easy to find and confirm and opponent and sometimes we spend 30 minutes chasing a lot of dead ends. It's not always easy for a variety of reasons, but we encourage you to start with the above steps if you truly believe your team's rating/ranking is wrong. The Math page can be your jumping off point to researching potential issues and we encourage you to use it as such.

One last note on the subject. Your MYHockey rating/rankings is not typically a reflection of your team's best games this season. It is a mathematically computed average performance rating for all of your games. This includes both your best and worst performances of the season. For almost 99% of you, you will find opponents that you beat ranked higher than you and teams that you lost to ranked below you. Those things happen to virtually every team. Remember that you team rating/ranking is an average and will not reflect only your best performances.

There are a solid town team...could never compete vs the Bandits, Badgers, Outlaws, Warriors, etc. Solid Town and B level travel at best.

I have my son on a team which practices 2 days a week all winter and I enter him in clinics to develop lax IQ. He's been doing this for a few years and I haven't found any burn out, only positive results. Hope that helps.

Kids this young don't burn out now. It's around tenth grade that burn out happens if you want to call it that. I call it something that might happen. Every kid is different and because that is the age when they rebel they will use the term burn out and blame their parents for doing too much for them. If your kid is having fun and you get to spend quality time w him or her driving to practices and tourneys then ride it as long as you can.
My oldest a junior in college just left the sport this past year. It was fun while it lasted and honestly I didn't expect it to last this long. One thing I always told him and myself was that this may be the pinnacle of your lax career and being a pro gets paid squat to play your goal is to use the sport to create friendships and to open doors that May otherwise be closed. Enjoy the ride it goes quick. Talk to your kids now because in a few years they may not listen. Listen to your kids too they will tell you of its too much

I would be sure to check to see the roster matches up. Some of the coaches like to bend the rules and slip their older son's into the game when they think no one is looking. When they get called out on it they play dumb.

91 Warriors have not posted a schedule yet. I think it's safe to assume they'll be in Stonybrrok Lax Clash and LI Lax Fest. The rest are uncertain, I believe. Someone else may know more than I do, though.

Anyone have any input into what teams in 4th grade look good so far from watching Fall ball or winter Leagues?

There's a lot of new teams with strong chemistry. The club scene is becoming very diversified and the playing fields are leveling.

Some teams are practicing twice a week or at least once a week with kids in various tournaments. These teams are getting stronger. The two little guys to watch though are the 91b Warriors and the Empire green team. Warriors even though a B team have been together 3 years now and could be a strong team since they practice a lot and have at least one new top recruit. Empire Green, the new program, have a lot of strong kids defense and offense .This was clear at MLK but they don't practice at all and the competition wasn't there. They also have too many kids on that team to develop the talent they have.

Another team to look at is the new 91 team out of the Sports Hub called Hurricanes. The 4th grade team is their best. Its their first year and we'll see how the season unfolds. They've been playing up against 5th grade and have been winning.
Brian O'Keefe is the director so I'm sure the team will be a strong force for the future.

At this age how can you compare teams (91) who practice year round to teams like (Empire) that haven't practice yet as a team? You really can't and shouldn't...

2023 empire green entered MLK tourney in 3/4 grade bracket and played mostly if not all 3rd graders. Sachem was all 3rd grade- other 2 teams were 2 town teams combined for each team. Play true 4th grade teams and then post your kudos.

Just looking at the talent with new clubs and know who the kids are and where they are from. Over time the plays, zones, etc will click. These new clubs in 4th grade have some great talent. It's a good grade for long island diversity!!

I Agree with the input regarding the Empire 4th grade green team. They look to have a good foundation with talented players all the way around. Although the competition was on the weaker side, you can see that this group can and will be one to reckon with once they build more chemistry with one another.

It would be great to see ALL of 91 Dynamic Sports Management teams play each other in scrimmages to get better. Hurricanes, Empire, Warriors, Bandits, 91 Westchester.

4th grade Igloo will dominate this spring and summer. They added a new coach with many good players. Can't wait to see how they do against 91 and empire... Lol

The poster is on this thread because maybe they want to help some obviously unbalanced individuals. You should pay some attention to folks who have kids who have been through youth lacrosse and moved up into HS and college. Their insight may bring some sanity to those not possessing any. That doesn't mean you have a prodigy child. It means he and hundreds of others all over are at that level. It's a long journey. Enjoy the friendships he and you will make along the way. I just saw this also. I don't have a young one anymore. I was on here commenting about the weather at Shamrock. I have a few older boys and could add the same insight as this other poster. I do remember a little bit of name calling and club coach bashing in 4/5/6th grade but that does stop a bit.

Sure there will be some hold back conversations and a lunatic parent but For every lunatic parent there are 3 caring families that look over the group. for the most part this lacrosse scene on Li is a community, dare I say family.

You will see many of the boys who are good, self-declared better, for their age stay as good as the years go on. Sure a few come and go some grow at different rates. But the majority of the "players" remain the same.

The best part, the players become friends with each other and regardless their team or affiliation they appreciate each other, many relish the opportunity to play with, do clinics with, and play against each other.

Enjoy the ride, there is no right answer for every player. As the parent you need to know what is best for your child.

Yeah, I heard that the 4th grade Outlaws are not the same team. The Director and some dad's coach the team. Legacy is on its way up with Taylor having a big influence, as well as more practices and great coaching.

Badgers went to Maryland and beat a Bethesda Lacrosse Club team who had not lost a game in 3 years and who beat the Bandits in Baltimore the year before. Bandits and Badgers are evenly matched with talent this year. Their games will be battles. No other 4th grade teams come close.

They did less than a year ago at Lax Fest. Bandits won by a goal. Great game. No egos on either team, just very good players.

91 Warriors have not played the Outlaws this year. Wolfcrack parents are funny. 2023 teams will make them cry.

Wolfpack is only a 3rd grade team on paper. No competition there at all. They have played up all fall in every tourney they have been too. Stop the hate. Except for the Bandits and Badgers this team will give every team at the 4th grade level a run. Not that hard to believe that boys who are a grade below the 4th graders are be able to play with them. Team is legit, give the hate a rest.

Go back to 3rd grade wolf man and pump your chest there. Nobody in 4th grade cares about you posting on a 4th grade site. Go put on some pads and a helmet, bring your son to a field and have him play against you since there is no competition in 3rd grade.

Don't lump all 91 together. My son is a second year Warrior and I am thrilled with the way he's progressed. I'm definitely not comparing his team to any others. I just worry about he and his team.

They are a good team, no doubt, but 4th grade "B" division is not the same as 4th grade "A" division. And I'm not talking about the guys ranking the teams A,B,C,D or whatever. "A" divisions in tournaments host "A" teams, "B" divisions host "B" teams. To say there is only one "A" team is absurd. Most of the teams in those earlier rankings played up in tournaments all fall.

The Bandits lost to the BLC 2022 team the 2023 team did not play them= Bandits or Badgers competitively at all. I agree the Bandits and Badgers are ahead of the pack but speaking honestly the Bandits are leading the pack probably by a 4/5 goal margin.
Now BLC go back to the Maryland thread and convince them you are good. What tournaments are the Bandits attending this summer? Would like to see how many times we would get to play them.

Legacy will be at JDRF. Maybe Wolfpack will play in the A division. If not, you should probably just go away permanently.

Has anyone sent their boy to Hofstra camp?

It's the first year for Tierney's camp. Most kids go to Millon because they like to sleep overnight.

Hofstra camp was last year also. Heard good things except for issue with traffic and getting there at night . I think session was at 5 or 6 pm. Sent my son to the younger Millon camp and definitely won't be going back. I guess the older ones are better. We were out in the hot sun for 4days . Medics or college kids sat passed out under tree oblivious .Bathroom was across the parking lot . All of the high profile athletes would stop by our group for 10 minutes and coach b would ask them about course load at college . Forgetting the audience was 8 years old and also some of the coaches were incoming freshman. So we learned nothing from miles jones or any other player. Then somewhere around day 3 Millon showed up and spent 10 minutes showing all 50 kids how to throw . Something all of them learned from their dads way before they got there. Again this was the youngest level but was extremely disappointing .

Careful what you wish for. Warriors aren't united and were generally embarrassing towards the end of last year. A weak fall tourney win doesn't mean much.

That's the insane part. Warriors are 4th grade and Wolfpack is 3rd. These kids are still wetting the bed.

They are both 91 teams and coaches are close friends that have coached together. Maybe they don't want to stir the pot like some of the parents here. I am sure that if they really wanted to play each other, a simple phone call would be all it would take. Good luck to both teams this season. Lets all give it a rest and support these boys and let them enjoy their experience.

It is not all the parents- it is one or two- same for other teams and other clubs. We do not like the boasting and chest thumping, any better than any one else. Wish everyone would let the kids play and not be so critical of them, nor, boastful. Games are just games and teams change over time. If your kid is on an elite team as a younger player, I can guarantee you that team will change many times over before they even hit 8th grade. You say it will not, but it happens every time, just ask some families with older kids. Looking forward to the beginning of the lax season- hopefully with no snow and better temps!

Wow. Talk about someone looking to start some stuff. My son plays for Empire Green. I think we're a good team with a promising future. It's a little early for rankings, though. The Honey Badgers are still a ways away from us. And yes, we just lost a great game to the Warriors. We beat them once, but they responded when it mattered. I think we should all be looking forward to a very fun and competitive season! Good luck to all Empire, 91, Express, Legacy, Outlaws, Icon, Hurricanes and any other club I may have missed!

I think Honey Badgers beat Empire 8-4 in Championship game at Mitchel Field. This game was right before the winter and right after tryouts. Again I think it was the same team because they played in Empire pennies and have a good defense but offensively. No points on the board with a lot of possession time. As for the Warriors this weekend they lost to Empire 4-2 first game. They tied in Championship game and then won in a Braveheart. Rank then how you want

Okay...I believe the Bandits lost once in two years in grade, to BLC. And the Badgers haven't lost in the grade in two years, except for the losses to the Bandits. After that the Outlaws have played the Badgers the toughest. This doesn't include when the teams have played up, in grade competition.
