If James Sullivan is even half as good at racking up points as he is at taking faceoffs, Garden City might be in for another special season.

Actually, considering Sullivans mark of nearly 75 percent at the faceoff X last season, a shooting percentage of less than half of that would be fine, he said.
The junior, who has served as the teams faceoff specialist since eighth grade, is expected to play in an expanded role this season, as a two-way midfielder, boys lacrosse coach Steve Finnell said.

We expect James to be a two-way middie, Finnell said. He is in great shape and will be one of the top all-around middies this year on the Island.

Last season, the Trojans, a perennial powerhouse in Nassau, captured their second straight Class B state title. Sullivan, who had 10 goals and three assists last season, and senior attack Cody George (36 goals, 13 assists) are expected to produce offensively for the team that returns a strong defensive unit.

When asked at what point Sullivan thinks he would get tired this season, he laughed and exuded confidence.

I might get a little tired, but we have some depth and I think well have a good year, he said. I love faceoffs and the past years Ive been strictly taking them, but Im excited about this year. No one thought of us winning at all last year, but we pulled it off. This year people have some doubts, so Im hoping thats what happens again.

For Garden City, which was seeded No. 1 in Conference B in a preseason coaches poll, its best offense still might be its defense. Especially since Sullivan will still be doing what few high school players on Long Island do better.

If you have the ball all the time," Sullivan said, "that makes it hard for the other team to score, so well be all right.

Why is this a thread? Kid is great, but so are a ton of other players. Should we open a thread for them everytime they are mentioned in an article? There would be a traffic jam on BOTC!

Get a motorcycle as it will help get through a traffic jam minimizing delays.

Yes, whenever we have a positive story about a player I will post it.

11 for 13 on faceoffs and a goal, he was the single biggest factor in the win, game was tied at 3 with a minute and a half to go in 3rd, he wins the faceoff and GC goes down and scores, opening faceoff in the 4th was a clean win and he want down and scores it is now a 5-3 game..... he give his team 9 extra possessions in a very low scoring game, he was the difference. Excellent player

Let's see what happens when he faces some real competition! Not too much in NC, and Syosset is not known for having an elite F/O man. Northport has the best F/O kid on the Island. How many goals did he score? 2? Seems they probably still would have won being the score was 6-3. Not putting the player down, he is excellent, but why all the hype? Many others as good or better!

Not a hater! This is a forum where people say things that everybody will not agree with. As I said the kid is excellent, was really just wondering why this discussion is even happening as there are so many other kids as good or better!

This thread is a mistake. It starts as a PR piece for the kid, his team, school, etc. Predictably then people feel the need to unfairly take the kid apart with bogus criticism. Either way, the result is some degree of distortion.

There was a kid at the Underarmour tryouts last year that destroyed both and wasn't picked for the team for political reasons. Both GC kid and Northport kid were picked and on the Underarmour team. How did that work out ??

Enough said

The thread is not a PR piece, it was posted as a re-print of a Newsday article - It would be great if BOTC does that with every Newsday feature and we can have a discussion on here about the article

It was a 3 goal game and tied with near the end of the 3rd quarter, the kid gave his team 9 extra possessions in a low scoring game, they may not have won if the face offs were 50/50 - give credit where it is due

Realizing that not everyone is a Cablevision subscriber with access to Newsday on-line, I will make every attempt to reprint with attribution all articles that come to me.

Let me say that I don't have or did have a child play lacrosse, and also state that I have no affiliation or interest with any lacrosse association, club, team, or tournament. BOTC is an independent publication.

Who cares! There are lax games now everyday with articles, following on players. There is no way everyone of these will be posted on botc, nor should they. For example, there was an article about two Smithtown boys in the paper today, but I don't see that posted. When we get towards the end of the season, when these games actually become important, I can see it. Now it really doesn't matter how many F/O s a kid from one team wins, or how many goals another scores, unless maybe it breaks some kind of record!

so rather then talk about actual lacrosse being played lets discuss a coach getting fired for three months and lets talk about Maryland kids being older then long island kids for a few more years because you bring nothing to the table when it comes to actually talking about the game of lacrosse - not every team goes to the state championships every year and these are in fact real games that are important to these kids that have worked so hard to get were they are

News Flash: There is more than one team from LI that goes to State championship! More than 1 kid contributes to the success, and there should not be a thread for one player! Maybe the thread should be changed to "players making an impact on Varsity".

I think that would be an excellent thread. Reading about these fine young kids from all over Long Island may be enough to counteract all the nonsense that is posted on this site by their parents. It would also be the only thread on this sight I would let my kids read. The kids get it, the parents don't.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Sullivan to see more of the field for Garden City - 03/20/14 08:01 PM
The usual garbage talk by the parents is sickening. 91 this, igloo that, epress yadayada. So, now a kid who actually is going on to a Div 1 team in 2 years who is part of a great Lax program is trashed. Shame on you idiots. Go to the 91 site and be petty there.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Sullivan to see more of the field for Garden City - 03/20/14 11:14 PM
Lot's of sour grapes on these threads from parents who didn't achieve recognition in their high school years and hope their children will "vindicate" their own failings or weaknesses. Honestly, it's funny to read and watch because they look and sound foolish. I love reading these threads!!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Sullivan to see more of the field for Garden City - 03/21/14 12:59 AM
The kid doesn't need anyone on here to tell him he is great. His results speak for themselves and in two years he will be lighting it up at Harvard while zeros are still on this site debating the travel schedule of 4th graders.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Sullivan to see more of the field for Garden City - 03/21/14 01:09 AM
Happy for the above kid.....don't know him, and only have seen him play a couple of times - and I am sure his work ethic is second to none - but with that being said, not sure if a thread on BOTC should be specific to any one player......unless there is a separate section slated as player specific, printed/posted articles etc. -- It's a good piece --- but once one does it - what's to stop little Johnny's dad posting how many goals Johnny scored in a 3rd grade scrimmage game.....just saying
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Sullivan to see more of the field for Garden City - 03/21/14 03:39 AM
I just say nice job by the kid. Wish him well. If not for this thread, I wouldn't know about him so thanks for the information.

A forum is for the dissemination of information and discussion related to the topic of the op.

If there is a conflict about the content of the op; then start your own thread where that topic can be discussed.

You guys really do hate to hear about a kid who has done very well. A little research reveals he's been on varsity since 8th grade. I'm impressed. Those are few and far between and I salute them all.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Sullivan to see more of the field for Garden City - 03/21/14 01:07 PM
A little history about GC moving kids up to varsity. First off as soon as the test results and acceptance letters come out for the Catholic schools the Coaches in GC get to work. They have meetings, make phone calls, visit families houses to convince them to stay at GC HS. They make sure the other kids are in their ears all day every day telling them to stay. They go as far as offering to move them up for football and lacrosse. For every Sullivan there is 5 - 7 kids who got caught up in the bull from the GC coaches and stayed. Once the school year starts you are stuck there is not transferring into Chaminade after freshmen year. Once that happens then all of a sudden there is another meeting where they are told your son is not ready and needs a little more time to develope so we are going to keep him with his grade and watch him closely. Correct me if I am wrong if you get moved up you have to play at least once in a game. Is that correct?? Funny thing is if you decide to attend Chaminade and after a year you decide it is not for you your fallback is GC HS not a bad place to fall. James Sullivan very very good player great supportive family a great success story. Harvard education tops. Unfortunately he will dissappear since they are the redheaded step child of the IVY'S and will never beat the boys above them.

Who's hating? Just pointing out facts!! As stated, many kids as good or better! One should not be singled out, doing that can be a double edged sword. What happens when he doesn't live up to expectations? It's a lot of pressure put on a young man and it can backfire!

Are you his manager? I don't think so. I think you're the dad of someone who Newsday didn't write about.

If you truly feel as strongly about this situation as you appear to be, then I suggest you [lacrosse] to the writer at Newsday and not to us on BOTC.

I would also extend to you the courtesy to publish any positive story you author about all the players you feel were slighted starting with you son. OK?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Sullivan to see more of the field for Garden City - 03/22/14 02:15 AM
Not true! Just as I said, dont think it's right to single out one. My son is doing just fine and the place I would want him to be would be the center of a botc forum.
I realize that you tried to a good thing by highlighting this kid who I have consistently said was a great player, but this is not Inside Lacrosse, and unless you are prepared to highlight every Impact player on the island. I maintain my position that one player should not be singled out. We can all read Newsday if we want to see these articles!

You are correct. This is not Inside lacrosse. The is the Back of THE CAGE and I am the Chief Rocker and I will publish what I think should be published. I get that you don't disagree, but as Ricky wrote and sang, "You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself".

Actually, a great idea. I will resume in the morning. I was just busy on a new program that will be introduced in the late Fall. I'm confident I will be hearing from you once I announce it.
