ok, i see that express, 91 and team li try outs were all completed. from what I saw last year, these were three pretty evenly matched groups. No disrespect to any other li team in this age group, but in my opinion, these three were the most competitive games. yes, I am an express parent.

I think express orange (now terps) added a couple attack, a middie and a pole or two.

Team LI and 91 parents, how much did your teams change if at all?
For other teams, Jesters, true blue...how did tryouts treat your team?

91 Orange added 5 new players including upgraded speed at attack and a touted D Pole. Hope to see alot of these other teams.

Team LI lost several players. Don't know who they picked up but count on them being well coached.

A "touted" D pole? Are you insane? These are 12/13yr olds...Get a grip. This is no reference or disparagement to ANY team, be it Express, 91, etc, etc, etc... It is only regarding that comment.

It differs by year. 2018 is different than 2016.

What are the best clinics for defensive training? My boys have done a couple of camps and clinics are have not been thrilled with the level and amount of training. Too often there is too much horsing around and not enough teaching going on. We are looking for suggestions. Thank you

Pat McCabe is an excellent coach, but at this age put your focus on their athleticsm. Either speed training, cross-training, or anything to get the optimal work on his foot speed and skills. You can find this in various locations - find a trainer and go get a trial session - if they like the workout book a package - make them a better athlete - they will become a better lacrosse player - not just a D player

91 orange did not! We slowed our team down a bit, and should be weak at best. We also decided to forego practices for pizza and beer sessions done on-line with x-box. We are raring to go for next season!--think before you post, meatwhistle

I heard the chosen few didn't do so great this weekend in their secret tourney.

I know someone who played for Team LI. They combined some of their 2017 players with their 2018 players. I guess they are going to be playing U15 in tournaments. Their best attackman (2018) went to 91 Xtream.

Check out Dynamic Lacrosse Training (DLT). Run by the 91 guys. My son has attended their clinics for the past three years. They have all sorts of clinics (stick skills, Defense, attack, F/O) They do a nice job...

And the face-off mid-fielder from Team LI went to 91.

I have to say, I think the advantage goes to Express this year. Player talent level is evenly matched, but coaching would tip the scale to Express.

We all know there are many good players in this age group on LI. Let's not swell ego's here by claiming best of anything or "touted". It sounds ridiculous. Let's leave it at "there are many talented players" - keeping in mind they're 12! There are also skilled players which have not even entered the "travel" arena yet.

Superstar 365 lost to LI Express Terps 4-7 today at Skull and Bones Tourney, good game.

Good game,both teams played well.Congrats to the 2018 Terps on the win and 4 and 0 on the day. 2018 Patriots looked good as well and so did the 2018 Wolverines nice win over the Outlaws.

We really should congratulate the express terps for the tremendous win in the skull and bones tournament. They beat the 11 man docs team to get into the final over the Patriots. Terps played a game of catch to keep the Patriots out of the final. We watched the game it was awful! the docs kids had 11 kids team =express could not let them score or the patriots would get into the final. Everyone watched and called for them to play - express no heart, no class. What a win, great coaching.

terps beat docs 13-0. this game easily could have gone to 20-0. true, the last few minutes of the game were not fun to play or watch, but it was clear the terps were by far the best team out there on that particular day, and in a way, can't fault the coach to look to get their team into a championship game. who would it have benefited if terps one that game 25-1 (besides the patriots). btw, the championship game was a good one, prob the best lacrosse of the day for that age bracket. as for docs, they had no business being at that tournament.

Stop with the nonsense. express could have one by 30 goals and did not. of course they wanted to make the championship game, what team or coach doesnt...

Blame the tournament for the ridiculous goal against tie breaker. it could have been goal differential, but then you people would be complaining if the express scored 40 goals a game.

some of these teams clearly cant compete at this level, so why go to this tournament, go to one that is less competitive.

i feel bad for the patriot team, but unless they were to play against express head to head--there are no tournaments i am aware of where there are playoff tie breakers--one team would be upset. in this case the express played within the rules and won the championship.

You are here eading Back of the Cage instead of helping somebody. These remarks that people are commenting from are from a tournament that happened before the devastation. I happened to be a player from a team in that tourn. I dont understand why the championship was set up with goals against,stupid.My team watched and the best team won and any of the coaches would have done the same to play to the end. Good players on the Terps i know some kids from camp they are good sports and competitive.Too bad some of you adults dont learn from us kids that actually play the game.

we played the 2018 team 91 white team at halloween havoc a few weeks ago and they look real good. They actually won the tournament. We lost to them by a fair margin. There was no hot doggin or unsportsmanlike conduct by the players or coach. He is intense and loud. Seem to be a strong team look forward to seeing them in the summer. This 2018 group for all clubs is a talented bunch overall. I hope the Express, Jesters, 91, True Blue, Team Long Island (no paticular order)and all other LI teams have the opportunity to play each other more often this year.

Would be nice for these LI teams to play more but some teams or clubs feel they have more to lose than they have to gain by playing other LI teams and losing. My motto is to be the best beat the best. It's the only way to claim your number one. They should have an all long island & ny tournament from each age group. Winners then will meet the winners from each age group of other states like NJ, Maryland, etc. No ducking or making claims your the best. Can't miss this type of tournament and say your number one. Who's got the balls to put this tournament together. You can have seeding like they do in wrestling based on head to heads etc. Coaches would meet with tournament directors to do seeding. With a little more thought could get interesting. Everyone invited coaches discretion.(can't cry if you enter and get your butt handed to you) It's the best of the best. Alex M

Yes in the younger age groups it does happen but as you get into the older divisions you travel outside of NY to try and wrestle better competition it doesn'tT. alking about Iowa, Ohio, PA. They are the wrestling hot beds we are the lacrosse hot bed. The only thing like wrestling would be the seeding based on any head to head or caliber of record. This is just a suggestion. So let me get this correct if one team happens to beat the other at one particular event that makes them "the best". Who cares its about KIDS playing and learning and developing skills. These teams could all go out and play each other and win and loose on any given day.

It's a TOURNAMENT! Emphasizing on Long Island and NY teams. Let's call it the LI Cup. If you don't want to play that's fine. It's a suggestion for a format. Why do they have champions at the end of tournaments? LI teams always dodge each other. It's not a death match just a freaking tournament. I won't ask who your child plays for but do they play on a travel team. If yes why? Do you accept the shirt or award they give at the end or give it back if your team wins a tournament. Why do they keep score? All games could end in a tie and everyone get medals. This isn't developmental. We are talking about the lacrosse hot bed of the country that has the most competitive club team field in the country. That's why I am SUGGESTING this type of tournament.

I am all for a tournament. As long as at the end of it, we all get a breif moment to lick our wounds and/or pound our chest then go about letting the boys become closer (regardless of teams).

I believe Dune Dawgs threw it out to the 2019 teams a few weeks back.

Can someone please see if there is enough interest from the 45 club teams that are listed to run such a tournament. And afterwards we can put all our differences aside and have a big BBQ.

Forsberg has an A bracket. We can limit to 8 teams. Outlaws would be in , I believe Express would do. Now lets have 91 Team LI fl$ any one else that has A teams contact me to Discuss. We would make A bracket 2 Day. Play 3 games sat then have Championship bracket on sun. PB Li Outlaws

And there's the issue, Money, who benefits why can't it be a cost run event. The profit is in the kids benefit not someone's pocket.

Get volunteers, yes volunteers from the big organizations teams to line and take care of fields. I am quite sure new dads would be more than eager to show they will pitch in. It may also help getting to know the parents on the oher teams. Do it at one of the state county parks. Eisenhower or Heckshire. (Does bethpage do games)

Get the vendors to pay a non refundable "site fee" to offset the refs and shirts and any permits. If the teams come they will be surrounded by customers. Maybe a nominal fee for teams of $500.

The question is what weekend. An event this big starts on a Friday night and ends late Sunday. But at least. Travel is limited and you can sleep in your own home.

With many of the schedules pretty much set when would it work. Lax fest is flooded by 91. Express will try and pull off their games. Forsbergh or jdrf start the season as great benefits but IMHO you wouldnt want it to begin the season, you want the boys to have played a few games before then and I am sure you would want at least one more tournament after it.

But the key is the seeding. Who plays whom? You still want to make the games fair and you want competitive games. You do not want express A or 91 A playing a C team to start. You meet and pair off the first games and do a tournament where the winners meet winners losers meet losers. With some idea (pyramid) which would resemble the top teams meeting each other.

Your talking about logistics and specifics to a tournament that has not even been planned yet. I threw out the guantlet.. I suggested this tournament as a way for LI teams to play each other. If someone wants to do it. Let them run it and worry about the details. Would be great to be a charitable tournament but the key here is that all the LI teams play each other. We can iron out the details as a group when we can actually get the tournament nailed down. I think the person running the Forsberg tournament put it out there that they would facilitate it. But now lets get Express, 91, fl$, Team LI etc. to commit. They can work out the details as a group if they want the input. I would like to see the Hofstra Tournament build a championship format and that would be the place to do it, I think it will be difficult for any team run tournament to pull it off and get everybody there. personally I don't care who gets it done as long as we could get it done, the head of parks in Nassau County is a lacrosse guy maybe the county could put it together for the first week in August, what a great way to end the summer. lets keep this chatter going

Happy to report that there is a new metro U13 team that can start to compete with the dominanace of 91 and Express. We lost to the Express after only 3 practices 7-4 in our first outing a few weeks back. We admire what you have done, and are looking to replicate it across the bridges. You guys all played up at the Bulldog Classic this weekend (and had a really nice BBQ setup as well !! ) We won U13. Remember this is fall lacrosse not every player is playing every tournament. So some teams are not at full strength until summer. So as far as all these "bragging rights" about winning we are not all playing yet.

Team long Island and Express Terps played today at the Hub in Syosset, good competition and great to see the boys back on the field after what has been a long month for a lot of the families. And the facility is awesome. Great to have a place this nice in the middle of Nassau County

2018 Terps went to Philly and played the Dukes and Tristate Black. Beat the Dukes 15 to 4 and Tristate 20 to 2.Any other teams played this weekend?

Looking for some help, how does an association treat an "older" member of the class of 2018 during spring '13 season??

We have 1-2 boys in this grouping at each grade. The vast majority of the roster is age appropriate for their grade. One of the boys is a late August birthday and misses the cutoff by a few days.

Notably, if they intend to attend tournaments playing by US Lacrosse rules, I assume the options are:
1-Player is placed on the 2017 team
2-The team plays in the U-15 division
3-Association get clearance from tournament director but technically is "playing down"

This has become a hot topic in my area (not a typical Lax hotbed) looking for some advice

As I believe the rules state, if it is a US Lacrosse sactioned event the Tournament directors should not have a baring on the rule. It is inflexable and a hard date is made for a reason. Insurances can be null and void if allowed. Yes, it is unfortunate, but where do you draw the line then, there will always be older and younger.

If it is not a US lacrosse sactioned event:
The team must have seperate insurance outside of US lacrosse. He can play grade based or He can also play if U13 and granted permission (seems reasonable enough).

The issue is liability and insurance, who wants to get caught with their hand in the perverbial cookie jar. because how many tournaments really asked for the waiver or better yet ck the info.

The only way to change the culture is for the tournament directors to stop making the tournaments for the travel circuit based on class year. That is fine for town brackets. If they just adopted the US lacrosse guidlines and followed the U-17,16,15,14 etc. every kid would be in the right AGE bracket, the same way baseball, football, basketball, soccer etc. do it! Why is this so hard to figure out. when you get to the High School level the better kids can play U-17 and play up if they want to be seen by the colleges earlier..

There will always be a date to meet. If you are Midwest than what is your date for Football and do you blend grades or is it one year at a time.

I am all for the class year. Why force a child to play on a team without his friends (rememebr you also have to think of the boys that do NOT play on these elite teams). For youth lacrosse why have a 2 year gap as US larosse does. Why not do a grade based or one year brackets. I can understand in non hotbeds the 2 year gap may have once helped the numbers fielding a team. but has that time come and gone.

When you get into MS or HS of course a mixed grade is acceptable, they will play that way from then on it as it is. And the question is never playing up it is playing down!

I guess when they attend the same tournament? Probably TriState. Fall ball is over and don't think they play the same winter schedules.

Its amazing it does not seem so complicated and that was the way the tournaments were set up in years past.

?? Ran the score up? The goals were made by numerous different players, lots of ball movement and passes before shots.Both teams wanted to play and the entire bench was played. I guess they could have asked the parents to switch places with the kids??

College coaches going to recruiting tournaments want to see 2014's playing 2014's and 2015's playing 2015's plain and simple - all trough PAL they pay grade based and obviously in school they play grade best - it just makes the most sense to have 8th graders play 8th graders

Actually it doesn't make any sense at all! It makes more sense for a 14 year old to play a 14 year old not a 14 year old play a 12 year old because he was he was left back or his parents held him back. This is especially true at the 7th and 8th grade level. When a kid is in his second year of puberty because he is old enough to be in High School is playing and dominating pre pubescent kids who does that benefit? It's still youth lacrosse, its about kids developing their skills. News Flash, The college coaches aren't at the 8th grade games! Once the kids are playing on varsity all bets are off and they can play at that level which would be u-17. The colleges will figure out what grade a kid is in. There are plenty of coaches at the under Armour tournament or Jake reed etc.. which has a mix of all grades! Give them credit they know what they are looking for.

do you cry like this about school ball too? when seventh graders play against 7th graders but one is older then the other? they play by grade in PAL and School but you want them to play by birthdate in the summer? makes no sense and by the way Jake Reed has different weeks for different graduating years so every kid at a certain week will be of the same class regardless of age because nobody cares about age.

crying? lol If Someone doesn't agree with you then it is crying? If you read the post, it said it was fine for town play and tournaments. There is a huge drop in level of skill and athleticism over all. At the travel level it is a whole different story. I understand that many parents hold their kids back to give them an advantage, but when a rule or proposed rule that makes the playing field fair is suggested you get twisted because your kid may not dominate? The post also noted that when they are playing varsity it doesn't matter. If you want to use graduating year from 9th grade up then fine.

Just about every other sport does it by age in travel and they play with their grade for school ball. Don't be surprised if PAL goes to age as well and follows PAL football which goes by age (and weight).

Considering a few weeks ago a 9th grade Haverford boy who had NEVER played HS lacrosse verbally committed to Hopkins, the News Flash is clearly inaccurate.

College Coaches do watch 8th games (rising 9th grade). And do want to see boys of the same class play against each other.

very interesting that this thread is talking about loyalty or lack of and the express thread is complaining that the 2015 tryouts are a sham and that new kids had no chance to make the team and there was no turnover. maybe Express was being "Loyal" to a team that they developed and stayed with and won the U15 Nationals - these organizations are really damned if they do and damned if they don't.

If you are correct about 2015 not making little or no changes to the team. I don't know the facts. If that's the case then the tryout was a money grab. Most teams/coaches know before the tryout if there is someone on their radar or if they won't be making changes.

...not many if any spots are available and that you have a talent group you would like to stay together. Any outstanding player will always be considered.

Ever notice its always the guy who held their kid back, to get that age advantage, telling everyone else to stop crying about it? Bottom line, when your playing down against younger, weaker, smaller, slower, less physically mature competition you look like a superstar. That's why people hold their kids back. It's a huge advantage, especially when you go to a recruiting camp and you're a rising 10th grader that's 16, and everyone else is a an older 14yo or 15yo. No crying here, just facts.

Another problem with this topic is different states start kindergarten at different ages.So some are 5 some are 4 turning 5 and some are 6.So when it comes time for college you could have a big disparity in the ages of college freshman.Not to mention the whole PG year thing,but that's a whole another topic.

Kindergarten is where the problem starts, 9th grade is where it ends since once you are HS nobody evaluates by age it is all grade or JV/Varsity

The question is for 7th and 8th graders should they be treated like High Schoolers and divide by grade or treated as youth players and divided by age? I personally do not know the answer

I had practice after the game the scoreboard read 11-11 I guess that was the final. Big size difference between 7th and 8th grade.

Outside NY nearly everyone has an age cutoff that prevents 4 year olds from starting Kindergarten.

If you are going to us age the US Lacrosse guidline should be the only cutoff you use.

If you held your kid back than they should play with higher grade kids until 8th grade. This is why the US Lacrosse cuts at U-15 (Technically 8th grade should be U-14)

If you are not U-15 eligible in the 8th grade that is an entirely different problem

Seriously, why would a kid be a year older than everyone else?

I see Four potential reasons------------

A-- Because the kid got left back because the teachers or parents thought he did not have sufficient test scores to advance to the next grade, or just needs another year to get up to speed, for whatever reason. Entirely possible, and completely understandable. No issues here at all.

B-- Because the kid got left back because the teachers or parents thought he was not developmentally advanced enough for the next grade. Also entirely possible, and completely understandable. No issues here at all.

C----Because the kid moved from another state. Also entirely possible, and completely understandable. No issues here at all.

D-- Because the parents wanted an advantage (however large or small) over the other kids for both academics and athletics because they felt if it was an even playing field, the kid would struggle, or at a minimum, he would not excel.

I could see how people would have an issue with answer D, because it is not fair to the others who played by the rules.

Would there be any other reasons a kid is a year older?

Just a comment on the age thing - sounds like the majority of readers on this forum actually believe a 17/18 yr old college freshman would have a shot against a 23 yr old college senior. There is a huge difference maturity-wise between the two. Perhaps even a bigger difference in college verses same age difference in hs. It is what it is.

most school cut off dates are not hard dates - so a kid born in Oct. or Nov. the parents might have a choice to start them "on time" and be in the younger 25% of the class or hold them back for developmental reason and make them up to 14 months older then a kid who was born in Dec. and the parents started them "early". I think all of this has nothing to do with sports. on the other hand their are kids that finish the 8th grade and then repeat 8th grade at a prep school to get that extra year and and wind up being a year older.

In most schools I think you would have a normal 14 month spread between the oldest and youngest in a grade. I also think that this is a lot of talk about a relatively few kids at least here on LI.

7th Grade is the only grade where Age vs. Grade matters
The 2018 forum is the perfect forum for this topic. In 12 months 2018 parents won’t care but will instead be complaining about how unfair the NLC tryouts are.

8th Graders are invariably never U-13 eligible so they all play U-15
-Pretty much all 8th grade teams are U-15 teams
-An 8th grader who is U-13 eligible should still play U-15 to prep for HS

6th Graders(even “older” ones) are invariably always U-13 eligible so they all can play U-13
-Pretty much all 6th grade teams are U-13 teams
-A 6th grader who is U-11 eligible should still play U-13 to avoid playing with elementary school kids

7th graders fit into 1 of 4 buckets – the bucket your child fits into likely drives your opinion on this topic
-Too old for U-13 and really good – You are torn, you want your son to play with his classmates, but are tired of hearing you are playing down so you register him as an 8th grader or U-15 you want this topic to go away
-Too old for U-13 and still developing – Your boy needs to play with his classmates as he will be overwhelmed playing 8th grade completion you are pro grade based
-U-13 eligible and really good – You want the older boys playing with your son so that your son is challenged as much as possible you couldn't care less as long as the completion is good
-U-13 eligible and still developing – You are concerned about you son being overwhelmed so you want to dilute the 7th grade talent as much as possible by eliminating older 7th graders. You may view having older boys compete with your son as a safety concern you are pro age based

all valid points. However, your belief that this involves relatively few kids here on LI is wrong. In certain school districts, it involves a rather large number of kids. My son has a September birthday and has been one of the youngest kids in his class every year with a few kids being more than an entire year older than him. Considering that the school cut off for most of LI is December 1st, this should not be the case.

2018 express orange played team smithtown yesterday. A few of the express boys played for team smithtown. it is great that their town lets them play both, express and town team. certain other towns will not allow boys to play both, they are told to choose...

How was the game with TLI?

Good game , it was a scrimmage. Kids were missing on both sides. Express loaned goalies to TLI, final score though was 7-6 TLI.

My son was born on Nov 30th missing the cutoff by one day. Thank God I listened to his pre school and held him back, for one stinkin day to always be the youngest would have sucked. Sometimes he gets bored at school but developmentally it has given him an advantage in everything , really zero upside to not holding him back

wow - what a difference a day makes - probably the best thing a parent can do is what ever the [lacrosse] they want to do with their own kid, hold them back a day, a month, a year, or whatever, I hardly think that the decisions made at 4 or 5 years old have anything to do with sports and everything to do with development both socially and developmental. and for you to be able to critique the decision of someone else on a anonymous board is ridiculous. all they were saying is that it worked out well for them.

Everybody should do whateverthey want with their kid. Absolutely... However, until we go to age based brackets with birth certiicates to prove age, this controversy will never end. Grade based brackets fuel this conversation. Ever notice the people who claim they held their kid back for developemental reasons always say "it was the best decision for him". Oh yeah, and they never admit that it is also a huge benfit to the kid in sports... Of course it's not in the best interest in of the kids who are supposed to be in that grade. Same kid playing with kids his own age, average at best. Aged based brackets with proof of age is the only way to level things out. Somebody's gotta be the oldest, somebody's gotta be the youngest. At least we'll eliminate the crazy's who hold their kid back specifically for an advantage in sports, as well as the "it was the best decision for him" crowd...

they should also factor in height and weight as well as ethnicity, Jews and Italians mature younger so they should have a 1 year penalty and Polish and Irish mature later so they should get a one year credit - this way, all the kids will be the same height and weight and athletic ability and all games will end in a tie.

a second option would be to have all the kids graduating in the same year play against each other as they do now, whatever is better for your kid.

I couldn't agree with you more. It would eliminate all the nonsense that goes on in the sport. Also when teams play out of state it would eliminate having to play older teams that start school a year later.

1-the original poster commented that their child was "bored at school" perhaps the child is very bright or the child is bored because he is more developed than his classmates. In either case the potential as well as the impact of being "bored at school" by being held back in kindergarten is significant. This should be taken into account as parent's make decisions.

2-the math behind the economics of entering the workforce at 22 instead of 23 is quite clear also. Deciding to take away an entire year of earning potential from your child is a very big decision to make. It will have much bigger impact on their life than being the youngest in their class

Nobody cares....if you are good you play....if not you watch....its a simple thing.

The poster actually stated "SOMETIMES he was bored at school". My son is within "age limits" & is "SOMETIMES bored in school". When making this decision (I also have Nov & Dec children) it should be based on emotional maturity, not intellect or size for sports.

The decision to "take away a year of earning potential from your child" amazes me...would that even come to mind when your child is 4/5? It NEVER was a thought when making decisions for my children.

Are there nutty people who do this for an advantage in sports? Probably but, for the most part it is a decision a parent has to make for their child that they will always question. Being the oldest or youngest in a grade has its pros & cons. You need to make this decision based on your childs maturity.

Would like to offer my insight on this topic as I am a parent of a child that would be the poster child for this argument. My son was born at the end of November 1999. He made the school cutoff by a few days. We decided to send him to school and let him try it to see how he fared. Long story short, he has done wonderfully in school, academically, socially and athletically.

At present he is playing travel lacrosse with a known program and we are in a big lacrosse town. Up until this year I would say he has done very well and is a very good player. However this year i have noticed he has been struggling against the kids in his age group due to the size, strength and speed difference that starts to happen between 13 and 14,15 yr olds. It is very hard to watch him struggle after watching him for so many years compete at the highest level with these other kids, but as many of you know some of the kids he is playing against were "held back" so in some cases he could be playing against kids almost 2 years older than him.

In retrospect i dont regret my decision, because my son is turning into a great young man and I do believe all of the lacrosse stuff will even out in High School. I do somethimes ponder whether or not I should have held him back, however I think it is a decision each parent must with the childs best interests in mind.

I think the US Lacrosse age rules are fine the way the are written. The problem is the enforcement of the rules. A better system needs to be in place to ensure that kids are playing in the right brackets according to their ages.

Year of earning potential ? COme on. I could argue that by him starting college a year later I have more time for my money to compound a and pay more of his college tab. Its a silly argument. As for being bored, sometimes he is not, sometimes he has a hard time, I doubt a year ahead would have helped that. And like a HS guidance councilor once told me " 90% of my problems are Novemeber boys. I see some kids who are very young for their grade struggle, both in the class room and on the field. My son did not even start playing lax till 3rd grade, so its not like this was part of my long term gain an advantage in lax plan. But they should do like football go strictly by age. I don't think size matters as much in lax as it does in football, contact is not the same

Simple solution! Player passes with all needed information. Just turn into official before games.

I have a late Nov son and if I had sent him to kindergarten because he made the cut off- he would forever be struggling- academically, socially and emotionally. He is right where he should be, despite having 2 older brothers- and being a bigger kid. He is only an avg athlete- and fits in right with the kids in his grade- despite the fact that he is older and quite bigger than some. Parents do not retain their kids at 5 yrs old for athletic reasons- they do so because they have their kid's best interest at heart- as a whole person. As a teacher- I knew- many of the Nov kids do struggle and I made the best choice for my son for his future. if he cannot play with his grade some day- so be it. He will be far better off in life for having that extra year to mature and grow alongside peers that he fit with overall.

And by the way, if they got to age the date in US Lax is I believe either August 1 or Sept 1. Either case, all those Sept , Oct, Nov kids would be unaffected, some kids would be allowed to play DOWN a grade. Most of them probably wouldn't want to leave there friends

Even BOTC gets tripped up with the "U-age" versus "school graduation year" versus "different state" rules.

This is why parents even with October kids are holding them back, which is unerstandable to get an advantage. They know their kid would not do well if he was in the appropriate grade, both athletically and academically.

It was national because it had teams from over two states, and it did not say it was a national championship, it clearly states it is a national "indoor" championship and the winning tea got t-shirts that say "National Indoor Championship" so it had to be one.....or on the other hand Who Cares?

Uhm.. I think that's incorrect. Syosset Red defeated Northport Tigers 13-12. SYO won by 1 goal.

We are reporting the scores as recorded by the league.

The hub mixed up the scores for Syosset 6th grade and 7th grade. Syosset 6th beat Sea Devils 13-10 and Syosset 7th beat Northport Tigers 13-12. The hub reversed the scores for the two different grades.

Should be a good weekend for the 2018 LI travel teams at Shamrock.

great weekend of lacrosse. Express Terps and 91 Orange play in shamrock shootout final. 91 comes out on top. Express Terps also played 91 White in a hard fought game and Express comes out on top. I believe 7-4. 91 has two very strong 2018 teams in the division. Kids had fun and parents were well behaved. Congrats to 91.

Agreed that most parents were well behaved in the championship game. However, there is always one guy...that shows he is classless. Someone yells nice shot after their kid took a shot and missed, a parent from the other team yelss that was a weak shot. I guess it is to be expected after some of these people were drinking all day out of red cups...

91 orange beat teps 7-4 in the final, terps were 3 and 0 the rest of the day beating team LI , 91 white, and leading edge.

91 orange has one kid that is bigger and better than everyone else on the field, other than him, teams are pretty well matched. Both goilies kept their teams in the game.

All in, it was a very good tourny with some excelleint early season play. Hat's off to 91 for a shamrock championship.

So, if they are willing to travel and make practices that's their choice. No one forced them to tryout. If he was on your team sure it wouldn't be a problem. How about the players from Manhattan or other areas not Long Island on select teams. Express Orange has a player not from LI on their team that I know.

yes he is and he comes to play on LI, that should tell people something about all the club teams on LI. We do have lots of great talented players on all the club teams. Nice! No need for our kids to look anywhere else for competition. Imagine if we had a tryout for a top 2018 "true" LI Team?? Open to any and all players that go to school on LI. A "mini" type of UnderArmour game or Empire State game. Maybe a company could sponsor it and we could hold tryouts and play a weekend tournament for a LI charity??Would be nice! But as with everything else I am sure politics would ruin it for the kids!

For those in the know... What was the competition like at the 2018 level this past weekend (MD tourney?)? Were the teams not as skilled? not as deep? Are those the "elite" teams in Baltimore/Maryland?

They were skilled, deep and definitely elite. 91 just played a better game. Kudos, they wore them down.

2019 91 Orange did well too and had a great time while visiting. All in all both teams had a great time and experience watching Terps practice, tour of campus and locker room.

Who cares where he is from. The 2016 Express Barracudas best player is from Bronxville. What does it matter.

Never heard of Checkmate. Usually you have to win a tournament or two and beat a really good team or two before beating your chest, but I like your style....aggressive.

Dont know about superstar, but crabs beat express terps by 2 with a last second goal while terps were attacking to try and tie the score. Good game, crabs are big and fast team. Can play with any of the best li teams.

As an express parent I would say 91 orange, crabs, express terps...in that order.

Team LI also very good but they are a true u-13 team so a bunch of 8th grade boys on the team. They will be very competitive at u-13 tournaments.

Calm down...they were down by one with a minute left. the other team was playing keep away and express double teamed the ball. The kid had the ball knocked away and it bounced to another kid in fron of the crease for an easy goal...

Actually the Crabs were killing the clock with a one goal lead at the end of the game and had the ball in the offensive zone, Express created a turnover and when the D was flipping the ball to the goalie it got stolen and scored by Crabs for a two goal victory, although it was a one goal game with 5 seconds to play it never really seemed like the Express could beat them, Crabs had a lot of big strong kids with excellent skills - Express seems to have a lot of medium sized kids with excellent skills. Excellent game to watch

Ahh you open up and play a very attack oriented game leaving yourself open to breakdowns on defense. You do this when your down goals.

The crabs u13 team are all 7th grade kids with one or two 6th grade kids.
Just for anyone's info the crabs u13 played club 91 two weeks ago in MD which was the crabs first game playing together.

Grade should not matter...i know much of the club lacrosse world still goes by it, but birthdate should... Because they are in 6th/7th grade does not solely qualify them for U-13, being born between the US Lacrosse guidelines does. So if we are talking U-13 leave it at that, and not what school grade they are - people unfortunatley can and will manipulate that. I understand this is a 2018 thread - but if US Lacrosse ever gets its act together and enforces the rules they have written...it will be easier for everyone to understand and follow.....

in US lacrosse isn't it U17, U15, U13, U11 and U9? and if that is the case then every tournament and age group would have two years in it and create more mismatches and age problems then we have now. going by grade keeps all these kids that are in one grade playing against each other all year, both club and school. Seems really stupid to me to go by two year age brackets

Crabs complies with US lacrosse age guidelines. Only kids born on September 1st 1999 or later can play for U13. That is also the guideline for NPYLL.

Any middle school teams scrimmage yet? Just curious whats the average size of a MS team?

My sons team is a mixed 7/8th grade team due to budget cuts and the coach took 36 players. Until 2 years ago when there was a separate 7th and 8th grade team they usually took around 30 kids so not too much difference.

I'm not sure what the rules are regarding mixed grade MS teams but last year our mixed team played exclusively full 8th grade teams. Didn't matter since they went 9-0 but I know there are other mixed grade teams locally.

7th grade average size 5'3" - 126 lbs
8th grade average size 5'6" - 144 lbs

Gelinas (ward melville) is a mix of 7th and 8th with approx 40 kids. Huge size difference between this particular group of 7th and 8th graders...

It's been a few years for me but are the Maryland parents still "out of control" ranting, raving, stomping, crying, whining at every call against their kids and expect to influence the refs and subsequently the outcome of the game? What is it with them down there? Must be a cultural thing that they feel entitled/empowered to participate on those terms. I've never seen anything like it - hope its gotten better.

Crab parents were great at the Express 2018 game, nice to talk to before and after the games and well behaved during the game

Wrong...you seem to have to prop up your kids team every time you make a statement instead of just making a statement. Also you fail to name the team so others can verify your BS about the 9-0 team that won by 9 goals every game. But then again it is MS Lax in which lesser players play almost half the game!! Therefore I can only conclude that not only is your first team super even your second team is made up of superior players. Now we all know thats BS !!

Our MS carries about 25 for 7th, another 25 for 8th, and an additional 25 for a combined 7/8 team. The two grade teams are considered "A" level, and the 7/8 team is probably "B" level, although opinions vary on the talent level among the teams.

Lax is a "no cut" sport in our town, so after the grade teams there are one or two intramural teams per grade (they play each other, the grade teams, and other schools).

So, about 37 kids per grade playing at a higher level than intramurals, with the intramural teams still playing competitive lacrosse. Seems to work.

Our middle school is also a combined 7th/8th grade team. A lot of good players did make the team, but unfortunately a lot of kids didn't even get a look. Seems like coach picked mostly boys from the football team, as he coaches both sports. Too bad kids can't try out with masks on!! Seems like it would be the only fair way....
And how can you have a tryout for over 60 kids and not assign them to wear a number or something so you know who is who?? Just doesn't seem right.

Were the majority of kids that didn't get a fair look 7th graders? Some coaches take less skilled 8th graders over 7th graders since it's there last year to play MS lax.

Our middle school coach did this too -- he coaches another sport and he invited all those players to the tryout (some don't even play lacrosse!) and he took them all. Apparently even gave them direct special instruction during the tryouts (like that doesn't stand out to the rest of the boys!).

I guess his plan is to take a few Bruce Jenners and turn them into Paul Rabils. Good luck with that!

I am truly sorry if this impacted your sons chance of playing MS ball.

But I applaud a coach that looks at his/her future kids during the off season sports (to gain knowledge of players before a season). This is a huge advantage for a coach going into a season.

Any good coach knows you can take a great basketball player (especially defensive minded player grd/frwd with good feet) and turn them into a good (Big) Lacrosse player. Especially defensive.

My old coach years ago said "if you ever want to know who an athlete is have your boys play basketball. Regardless if they CAN play hoops (well), you will see who the athletes are, who the leaders are and who the hard workers are. These are all positive attributes and building blocks to any team sport.


The same is true that a great RB/QB in MS may make a good middie. A FB maybe Attack or Defense. Same with soccer.


Ill admit many things have changed since the 90's but Id bet if my coach were still alive today he'd say to find a good football/soccer player look at the lax fields for your diamond in the rough.

I agree. In most districts MS lax is a waste of time, even for the average player who makes the team, for a variety of reasons stated here. Terrible coaches, mandated play time, poor fields, and awful competition just to restate a few. I think if the top clubs offered practice three times a week and games on the weekends at OBLL and Kingspoint, there would be no need for MS lax. In some cases, I think the same holds true for many HS teams. All the nonsense about these gready premadona HS coaches who bench kids for trying to get better over the summer by playing at a higher level, and not on some mediocore town summer team that they run and profit from. Who needs it? No college coach is going to any HS game unless it's one of the top HS that we all know. For 85 or 90 percent of the kids playing on their HS team it's nothing more than stick time in preparation for the summer. Total waste.
I think they should abolish all MS sports and just have intramurals for those that want it. Every other sport can be played at a higher level outside of school.

Obviously, you are an insecure highly threatened school coach of some sort at a district that is not a lax power house. Don't be afraid of competition, ultimately it's better for the kids. What was said above it not dumb, it's 100% true. Every sport offered at the MS level can be played at a higher more competitive level. It's just a fact! In the case of lacrosse, it is overwhelmingly the case in most of the MS programs on LI. Not dumb my highly intimidated friend, not dumb.
With regard to getting rid of MS sports: It's a great idea, no need for it anymore. Put the money into the HS programs. Reduce the employee head counts and lower pension and insurance costs. Not dumb.

2018 terps played 365 twice yesterday. Hats off to 365, very competitive group of boys, well behaved and fun to watch. Parents also very good.

As an Express parent aren't families tired of having a constant influx of new players showing up to tournament and practice. New teams being formed. Doesn't this offend your sensibilities. Your child made a team at tryout and you were told he would be on a, b, c, or d. Now tournaments are here new kids showing up and getting playing time over your child. Are you ok with this. As a parent I am not. It's too late to leave because all teams have been formed that you were asked to play with. Don't want to be on the outside looking in. Is this the norm.

That is the norm with the express but not with most other clubs. Unless you're on the express A team they move kids around and add kids all the time.

Unfortunately, if your son is not on the A team, it is. For this reason we passed on Express B some time ago.

Later that same summer the club my son did join played the Express team he would have been on. I never saw so many kids on the sideline waiting to get in. Probably 28 kids total. The team was good, but playing time had to be an issue (especially for the money).

Whenever my son is playing express b or c he checks the schedule hoping the A team is playing at same time so they don't bring those kids down! They bring the best available 25 players!

new players seem to show up all the time. Ask the Terps about all the new players who were around lately. Ask the parents from last years teams when new players were constantly being introduced during tournaments. New teams being formed. A,B,C, and D. Then players are shuffled. Witnessed it first hand.

Totaly untrue. I know for a fact that terps players played on wolverines team last week. My son goes to school with two of the boys.

This has been happening for years. It's unfortunate for the players on the b and c teams who pay the same money and lose playing time to kids not on the team.

Yep this happens weekly and throughout the summer with the express. I wouldn't care if the B-D teams paid less money but they pay the same amount.

My son is on the 2018 Terps and we have had pretty much the same team for the last two years. I am not aware of and have not seen kids from our team go and play for the other two (B and C)teams in this age bracket.

There is one kid, who I know is technically on the B team that plays for the Terps from time to time when we need another player, but that is the only one. I cant speak to how those other teams are run, but I can tell you that our team is run very well with lots of practice and games both locally and against strong teams from other areas. This year we have played the crabs, 365 lax, a couple of Mass teams, and teams from california and texas.

Again, I know this is the Terp (A) team and the situation on the B and C might be totally different, but our team is not sending kids down to B and C to help them win tournaments...

Not a FACT! I'm a parent on one of these teams (not an A team) and we have not brought a Terp to one game all year. We had one kid move up because he honestly belonged up and we had one kid move down because he belonged down. The rest of the team is exactly the same since Sept.

I am a Piranha (C) parent. We have had the same team since September. We have never had a player from one of the other LIE 2018 Teams come down and play for us.

Ok to all the Jim Garrison's out there, why do so many of you have to be conspiracy theorist and self professed Express haters?! There are kids that made the team non - A team in Sept that go to some early season practices but didn't play in the fall or winter league because of other sports (basketball, ice hockey etc). They then started attending games in the spring once those sports ended. They are not Terps being brought down. There is no reason to do that for an OBLL game that quite frankly are played strictly to start getting the kids ready for summer. just because you didn't see the kid at a fall tournament doesn't mean he wasn't on the roster from the beginning and is a Terp bring brought in now just to win one game. I am Piranha parent. No Terps have played with us nor would their parents let them play with us . We wouldn't want them playing with us. It does nothing for our kids. We had one kid move up to the Terps and one Wolverine move down to our team but this kid asked to move down as he played with us last year. Otherwise its the same team since tryouts

As A Terp parent I can say not bad blood, good competition. If that is true then I guess 91 is adding players after a team is picked and has been playing together. Why would they need another player?? How will those kids that have been playing together feel now? The truth is people leave teams for many different reasons. Don't read too much into it. Some parents make decisions that are best for various reasons.

The Express supporters and parents are 100% correct. Other than the numerous exceptions already identified, and others they and we don't know about, and those exceptions that have yet to occur (it isn't even summer yet!), the Express teams are set and no players move around.

Story we hear is that 91 just added a kid from another team, I would love to hear how the 91 parents are going to feel about adding a player after try outs and taking playing time away from kids that tried out and made the team in September and also paid full tuition? I think SL has some explaining to do.

I don't see any problem with changing club teams. You get to hear a different perspective and voice. Plus the way some teams act is better for certain people than other teams.

The player has not been named and there is certainly nothing derogatory or negative from these sentences. As for the 12 year old in question, BOTC does not know the player and most readers do not know the player. Nothing seems to require additional moderation here.

I just don't agree that it is a fair and reasonable thing to do to the players and coaches in May when the team was selected and has been playing and working together since the fall. I have had my son on a team and was not happy there, so I did change programs. BUT I waited until after the summer tournament season was over and my son and I both Thanked the coaches and players then moved on. I would not have let my son ever do that to his teammates and friends.

For the record, I'm not a parent on either team. However, these things happen all the time. We all must rememeber that these teams our children play on are a grown man's business. At the end of the day the revenue from these teams pay mortgages, car payments, tuition, etc. It's all about the business. On the flip side, many parents will do whatever they think is in the best interest of their kids happiness and well being. These top teams are not all fun and games for the kids, these kids are pushed very hard and results are demanded. Before you pass judgement on either end, stop and think. What would I do in the best interest of my business? What would I do in the best interest of my son? Not so cut and dry on either side of the conversation...

As parents we are consumers of an expensive non-necessity product, and as consumers and parents we have a lot of time and money invested in these businesses and that is why so many of these posts are so emotional/irrational. What better a forum then to opine about these titan's of industry?

Especially, when money and personal advancement are at stake.... One does not have to be immoral or lack good values to be competitive or disirerious of personal achievement. Trust me when I say, we all need to be looking out for the best interest of our sons in this world of travel lacrosse. There are some great teams, coaches and clubs out there. However, the second your son stops producing at a high level on some of these super elite teams, all loyalty and integrity go out the window. They will become yesterday's news in heartbeat. So, again don't judge either side too quickly....

Sorry guys you are all missing the point. Life is hard yes, the clubs are here to make money yes, but quitting mid season and going to another club is not the right answer. Parents should not make things worse by leaving in the middle, stick it out and dont play next year.

But you dont leave a team in the middle of a season without a valid reason, which this particular family may or may not have. Bottom line, life is tough and you dont take your ball and go home every time something doesnt go your way...

As a parent of a 2018 terps player, I can tell you we are further than the middle of the season. the team has been playing together since the week after try-outs. Only four tournaments left, already competed in may...

Payments for these clubs are no longer just for summer--it is fall, winter, spring and summer.

The other non summer stuff cost additional money for almost all clubs. It's ala carte for everything. What you pay for is the summer program.

My son played with the express for a couple of years and everything is at an additional cost! The winter training, fall and spring tournaments, and OBLL all cost extra from the summer team fee!

As a 2018 Terps parent, I also agree that we are well into our season and was very disappointed that we had a player leave at this stage of the season. I guess there are always some that feel the grass is greener somewhere else. I wish that player luck and hope he is happy with his parents' decision. We have a great group of boys that get along very well with each other and I am sure he will be missed by them,

Only additional cost is OBLL. Fall, Winter and Summer are all included in your,dare I say, rather large "tuition".

A lot changed since last year huh. That was the last year he played for the express.

This begs the question - what would you do if you and your son are unsatisfied with the program. We've been told that we should stick it out then not come back the next year. That approach seems rather of fatalistic. Do you go to the coach and tell them your concerns? What topics are and are not acceptable to discuss with the coach/owner: Unequal playing time, poor training, poor/lack of plays, loosing record, too large a roster, poor communication/logistics. Just how much do you as a parent push back in these situations? Hasn't happened to me yet. I am just curious. Are you just supposed to stick it out and say goodbye at the end of the season? In the end we are customers with a right to expect a satisfactory product/service.

There is nothing you can do except not give them your money next year. If you want to eat the money you already paid you can jump ship before the end of the season but that teaches your kid a bad lesson.

I agree that we are customers but NONE of these directors see it like that. If they did the FULL prices would be listed before tryouts. It's crazy that in MD they can have a not for profit club charging WAY less than the worst clubs charge on LI and there kids get just as good of an experience as our best clubs A teams.

of course you should talk to the coach, but unless your kid is treated poorly, you dont quit...

His parents didn't feel that he was being treated specially and better than the players of lesser talent.

You first have to decide whether you've paid too much for him to leave, and if that outweighs the time commitment for tournaments and your son's unhappiness with the situation. If so, then he should just stick it out and get whatever benefit he can out of practice and try to have fun.

But, if you think the time considerations and cost weigh in favor of leaving, then BEFORE you do that, politely tell the coach your concerns, and gauge his reaction.

If he acknowledges the issue, and agrees to try and make a change, then you stay to see if things improve.

If he does not seem agreeable to making a change, or if he agreed to make a change and things really don't improve, then you have to decide whether or not to leave or stick it out for the rest of the season. Your decision should be based primarily on whether your son wants to stick it out. You should also consider if his leaving puts the other boys in a bad position (i.e., if he quits, does that leave the team short).

At this point, you've done what you can: you've given the coach a chance to address the issue, and you've involved your son in the process.

I know, because we went through this process recently, and after giving the organization a chance to make a change (which they promised but didn't execute), he wanted to move on. So we did. Never regretted it, although my wallet was worse for the experience.

Ok, got it and as I acknowledged in my previous post, you don't quit. I was more interested in learning about what parents are talking to the coaches about in unhappy situations. Is anything 'off the table'. For instance, if you see your team continually being beaten in their attempt to clear the ball would you feel comfortable going up to the coach and telling him/her to please work on clearing? Maybe its something else bad defense or playing time. Is anything off the table?

from a wm (gelinas) perspective, it has been a lot of fun. We play 2018 terps and have seen many boys on our travel team at middle school games. all boys know each other and have a blast. Nice to see them and their parents at games and be able to cheer when a kid on the other team does something well...

What does that matter? Kids leave clubs ALL THE TIME nowadays. The clubs are ALWAYS looking for the "next best thing", therefore why shouldn't we as the costumer?? No loyalty on either side, wake up instead of taking a shot at the kid and his family.

Oh we have woken up. How many players have jumped programs,not teams, months after a team is selected,other players were cut for that kids spot,the team has been practicing and playing,traveling together since the fall and it is now May?? The kid leaves and does not even give an explanation to his teammates and friends?Its not about him leaving,its about when and how he went about it. Or his parents decision to do so after being a teammate and friend for a few years.These teams develop friendships and spend a lot of time together,not just on the field but off the field too. The way this has happened has left the boys asking why? With no explanation. This isn't just about a game for these kids,this particular group is close and this situation has been upsetting for this group. Good Luck to the him, and the players will miss him, and hope he finds what he is looking for with his new team. Maybe someday he can explain it all to the boys.

Why does he or his family owe anything to anybody? Do they have the kid play club ball to make FRIENDS? Or get better and compete? You can't tell people how to live their life or raise their kids. I don't judge people on that, these club teams are a business for owners and parents need to realize its not a freaking play date. Its a cut throat competition at times, which is not good but it is the reality of the youth elite club situation.

As far as the kids on 91 who now have a SURPRISE kid coming for playing time and a roster role, I agree with you there. Tryouts are a TRUE waste of our time BUT as we all know a huge $$$$$$ maker for the 91's, fl$'s & Express's of the world. But thats something the 2018 Orange 91 team parents NEED to tell the owner/head coach of 91 - gotta speak up.

I guess you're right that this particular player doesn't owe it to his team and lacrosse at 12/13 years old is cut throat. However, I hope that in the real game of life we have not fallen so far morally. When we try to teach our kids values, I hope we don't always take the easy way out and say you don't owe it to anyone but yourself. Only look out for you. That may get you to a certain point in lacrosse, but at the end of the day are you happy with yourself? Are you proud of your decisions? When you have to start making excuses for your decisions and try to justify them to convince yourself and others, then somewhere in the back of your mind you know that it is not right. You can hide behind the thought that it is our son and our choice and we call the shots. But, are you teaching your son how to be morally responsible to a team that he committed to? You're not. You may wonder what difference does it make leaving now or at the end of the season. It makes a BIG difference.

People need to realize that it's not the boys decision to change teams often it's his parents! They are the ones that are in need of their kid being treated like a god by the coach and directors of the organization.

Parents make the ultimate decision for their child,true.From my experience,I do not think ALL parents and kids are in this at 12/13 years old for the cut throat part of the competition. On the other side of the bench,some of us are there for our kids to play,learn,grow and develop as players AND as fine young men. Many of these boys will be playing on teams side by side and then against each other on club,school,select,camps whatever teams. Many of us parents will be cheering for them all the way. Its too bad that the few bad oranges in the bunch don't see that. We will continue to explain all these valuable life lessons that sports has taught our son. This is just another one along the road.Yes parents are the consumer and the team is a product,but again there are young boys emotions involved as well.A tough line to walk when you put children's emotions in the mix. This insane world of youth sports is out of control because of adults,but that does not make it any easier on the kids that are playing on the field.

Once these kids manage to impress the Penn coach what will happen when he takes away some playing time or asks them to move to LSM or Attack? They'll be the first one's looking for a transfer. It won't be their fault they don't know how to work through a difficult situation, it's what their parents taught them.

That's the point exactly, and then they grow up and have to deal in the real world with a boss or employee. Suck it up, life is not fair, you cant always win, but learn and grow and be a bit humble....Teach your kids that and they will be better for it in the long run.

yet amidst all of this morality, the cynic in me cant help but think "wow this kid must be really good otherwise people wouldnt care this much". Took a quick look at the tournament schedules and 91 and Express are not in any of the same tournaments this year. Any other teams going to compete with these 2?

Since 91 Orange beat the Terps already at Shamrock I doubt MC will play them again. Also heard that Wolverines for this age group are not traveling once this summer. All local tournaments. Nice to keep paying for the Orange teams uniforms and travel tournaments. That's a joke. Wolverines how does it feel to be told your coach was going to be MS but he has never been there. Just name dropping by MC to get the money.

Your post is exactly why we know we made the right choice for our son when trying out for teams. He is very happy at Express and with MC and JL. Yes, you beat us. 91 played a great game no question about that. However, sometimes families are looking for more in an organization than 1 win against another top team. I can honestly say that my son is getting great training in a positive environment. He does not have any negative parents making crazy comments from the sideline after drinking all day at a 12 year old sporting event. It was only a handful of fathers, but they made your organization look badly and I would have been embarrassed if my son was part of a team that a makes fun of 12 year old opponents. I truly can't imagine spending all summer having to listen to these men. Has anyone from your team ever told them to tone it down? Or is their behavior accepted? I truly am not trying to be mean spirited. It would be wonderful having these group of talented boys be able to play each other more often since the end goal is for them to get better at the game they all love. It's just a shame that some parents take it to a whole new level.

First of all, the game is competetive and boys will get hurt if not taught how to play properly and maybe the boy and his family got tired of him getting shelled at game after game after game and the coaches not even doing anything about it if they were even bothering to make the games!

All I did was point out obvious facts. I was at that game and didnt hear or see anything that your mentioning I was sitting with both Express and 91 parents and it seemed as if all were behaved well. Faceless claims are always made on the internet because there is no accountability.

So your OK with being misled or your child is on the Terps based on what I read so its OK that other teams are being duped. I guess when your the top man on totem pole it doesnt effect you. I was talking about the fact that these kids wont play each other because its a business. What about the poor wolverines team beeing the B team and the false advertising in certain coaches will be coaching a team and you sign up for that reason and that coach is never there also only getting to play in local tournaments I am sure thats not what those parents signed up for. If you don't see the coaches doing a good job then you should leave. I am glad we did. It is a world of difference on 91 and I taught my son to work hard and go get what you want in life not sit back and complain. If he gets cut or not he will learn to deal with it. He has other great things going for him. You only live once!

I can not speak on behalf of a team that my son does not play for. I do not know the facts. And yes most of the parents were well behaved when Express and 91 played. Several of the parents from both teams were complimentary of each other after the game. Just a sad bunch of dads from 91 were poorly behaved. Most of us that were by the end posts heard the fathers with their red cups on the bleachers make fun of the 12 year old Express players while they were shooting or dodging. Just because you didn't hear it didn't mean it didn't happen. I am sure this was not the one and only game they were vocal. However, I am aware that there are many respectable families on the team.

All organizations have additional costs, who really cares. In the end, it is probably a matter of a few dollar difference from one organization to another, find the club that is best for you and your child and get on with your lives.

Now 91 has most arrogant parent of them all on the side lines. Just a matter of time before he tries to set up and control practice and charge the team money and get a cut from the proceeds. Good luck 91 and good riddens.

Team LI always competes well. This year they have a few 8th graders on the team so they are better than they were last year. Always a competitive club at this age...

The wolverines are a very good team. We played them several times in OB. I would hardly call them a B team and their coach is a varsity coach who appears to do a great job!

In 2018 the hierarchy of things for Express is A Terps, B Wolverines, C Piranahs. Its is not a slight calling them a B team Its just the facts. Their coach was supposibly MS but he has really not been involved. Dont know who their current coach is. The fact that this team of talented players isnt being given the chance to travel and play away tournaments is just sad.

Sad? Sign me up. Why travel? you can play the best competition right here. Let the other teams travel here. Last I checked the No 1 HS team in country in 2012 was from LI. Oh and the current 2013 No 1 is from LI. If the rest of the teams out there want to play the best, let them travel here. Drive all the way to MD and play teams that play down, no thanks.

You sound like someone whose kid did not make the Express Wolverines. In any case, you are wrong on your facts. There are 3 coaches on this team including MS and one of his Assistant Coaches at Kellenberg. MS coached the team in fall tourneys and fall practices. He did not coach the team in the OBLL which was an add-on. The parents were told he would not be coaching the OBLL when they were asked if they wanted the team to play in the spring league. The other 2 coaches(including MS' Kellenberg Assistant Coach) coached the team during the OBLL games. The team did not practice during the OBLL but I was happy with that as my kid was practicing every day with his middle school team - enough LAX for us.

MS has been at every practice once the team started practicing for the summer tournaments. He coached the team as it went undefeated in the JDRF. He will be coaching the team at Forsberg.

As for A or B. I have not seen the top Team LI team but as far as I can tell there are 2 2018 teams on Long Island that stand apart - Team 91 Orange and Express Terps. Not sure how the Wolverines would do against either one of them but if those 2 teams are considered A then I will agree Wolverines and every other good team on LI are B. But if they are considered "AA" teams then the Wolverines are an A team. The Wolverines have lost a total of 3 games during the many games they have played in fall tournaments, spring tournaments, OBLL and JDRF. Only 2 teams have beaten them. They lost to fl$ in an OBLL game but beat them in a rematch at the JDRF. They lost twice to 91 White by 2 goals each game in a spring tournament. I think most people would call the 91 White team an A team. For the most part, the Wolverines just came together this year. They are a very good team that is very well coached by 3 excellent coaches.

As for the summer tournaments, they are playing 3 on Long Island, 1 in NJ and 1 in Connecticut. I am okay with that. I hope you enjoy the hours you spend sitting in traffic getting to and from your away tournaments. I am more interested in the tournaments being competitive and my kid getting better over the course of the summer.

Just because you are the second team of an orgainization doesnt make you a B team. The level of play you can compete with dictate A or B. There are a lot of orgainizations with only one team. Yup your right. Live in your bubble. Wake up lacrosse is no longer a long island sport. You do have the rankings down but no idea what is going on outside of LI. I can assure you the there are parents on those teams that are not happy about playing only on LI. It's also about the experience and camaraderie. It's not that playing on LI doesn't give you quality competition. Its what was advertised. Travel summer team away tournaments etc.

This LI parent refuses to burn an entire weekend traveling to and from MD to play club lax. On Friday ... traffic on the Belt Pkwy, Verrazano Br traffic, Staten Island Exp traffic, Goethels Br (or Outerbridge) traffic, NJ Tpk traffic, followed by Philly traffic followed by Eastern Shore weekend traffic. That is a nightmare. And then do the whole thing in reverse on Sunday, which is much, much worse.

Not worth it. NJ, CT, Mass, and maybe Philly ... no further. I bet 90% of LI parents would vote for all LI tournaments if they were asked. No reason to travel over a bridge, when it already takes an hour to get anywhere on this dopey sand bar on a summer weekend.

Blah blah, so don't play for that team. Ask for your money back, they'll give it to you. Otherwise call the director and stop pi--ing and moaning on here. As for the rest of the lacrosse world, I'm well aware. However, you've got to look at the facts. When a top school like 'cuse only had upstate and downstate kids they were unstoppable, winning many NCAA crowns. Look at the roster now. Look at the results now. Maybe, just maybe, football converts are not the answer... Maybe pure Lax kids from LI and Upstate was and still is the recipe?? Looks like Duke is starting to see the light. main reason they won the NCAA was the face off X and the goalie... Oh and multiple top players are now headed there from SWR, GC, and Cham... How about Cornell? 7 or 8 of the starting 10 were LI kids... Not saying there aren't plenty of talented kids from all over the place. I am saying that LI is still loaded with talent. Quite possibly the best talent. With that said, let the other states come to us!

Sorry but Wolverines have played the Jesters a bunch of times and beaten them in every single game - some were close - but no ties. And this is not a knock against the Jesters who are a very good team.

Wolverines won the Forsberg 7th Grade A Division (2018 Terps were playing up in 8th grade A Division) Championship yesterday (with MS coaching all 4 games) but I am guessing the haters will now criticize the quality of the competition.

As record now stands - over Fall tourneys, spring tourneys, OBLL and 2 summer tourneys - Wolverines have 3 losses (2 vs 91 White by 2 goals in each loss & to fl$ who they beat in rematch), and 2 ties. The rest all w's.

2018 Terps went 2 and 1 at forsberg tourney playing up. Lost to a good 2017 outlaw team 5 to 2.

This weekend headed to Delaware to play some tough competition--crabs...

2018 91 Orange win in Ocean City Maryland. Beat Crabs in preliminary games. Played 2018 91 White in a tough game in semi finals. Congrats to both teams on a great showing. too bad these two 91 teams had to meet in semi finals. Orange go 5-0 and White goes 3-1.

Its funny everyone complains that these teams dont play each other enough. Now they are playing each other and people complain. How is a tournament director ever going to get it right. ALL 2018 PARENTS & COACHES! Beware. Laxachusetts Black does not play lacrosse, they come to swing, slash and hurt other kids. My sons team has played them twice and both times this team plays dirty. Moreover, the coach was arguing with the refs because the refs were calling penalties against Laxachusetts Black for slashing and pushing. My son was taken away in an ambulance today and I am grateful that his vertebrae was not broken. For those of you who know him, you know he does not go down easily. It was a blatant nasty swing to the back of his neck. Parents, beware. LAXACHUSETTS BLACK does not come to play the game we love.

Oh and thank you to the Laxachusetts Black coach for coming over to see how the young man in the ambulance was. Did you high five your player for that move?

For the record, I'm not an Express parent. 91, I know this is only one game, but try to read the tea leaves here. Next year hundreds of top talented kids will want to go to the Catholics. They will want to play for the top Express team. 91 will be on the losing end of the talent pool, this is where the 91 party will end. Look at the older 91 teams...

Great Tournament in the 2018 A. Bunch of out of town teams. 91 Extreme 3-0-1 ,Team Texas, Raiders, Express Terps, Jesters and Laxachusettes all 3 -1 and Bucks Select 2-0-2!! Took them 45 minutes to figure who would make playoffs! Great competition and solid showing from LI teams!

totally disagree with this one, the older 91 teams did not have a feeder program as they were a newer organization, they now have a great reputation and great younger teams starting with the 2018 group they are and will continue to be a force as will the express, this should be a good (and hopefully friendly) rivalry from years to come.

Did anyone see Wantagh play. Heard they are a very good Town Only Team and last week they tied fl$ and played a close game against 91 White. And No I am from Wantagh

They are very good town team. (also not wantagh parent) They are as good as Massapqequa and GC town teams. They did tie fl$ but don't think that would happen again.

Some very competitive ball. That Team Texas was solid. I watched them between games beat 91 White and barely beat the Riptide 4-3 if not for the Riptide's goalie keeping them in the game.

No, 2017 would be U14 (if there was a U14) or U15. Most 2017 kids were born before 9/1/1998 ....some a whole year or more.

No - My son is 2017 and born in September 1999. Means he started school at 4 and turned 5. Will be graduating as a 17 year old. Qualifies for U13 as a rising freshmen... will be even better playing U15 as a rising Junior

Yes. That's correct. In NY anyone born from Sept to Dec would be eligible. So a player could be eligible but not a whole 2107 team. If it was specifically a U 13 team you could have a few 2017 players. Most U13 teams will be 2018 & 21019.

Actually it's not. Kids born sept oct nov are all 2017. Most schools on LI are Dec cut off. That's all full 25% of all kids in 2017. Except in the lacrosse world most of those kids would be held back and be 2018. In Maryland they would be 2019....

Some time back, BOTC created a complete table of birth dates, graduation classes, school grades, and the corresponding U/age groups. The cut-off date for school enrollment is December 1st and the cut-off date for U/age groups is August 31st in this table (different from the July 31st cut-off date used in Youth Soccer but consistent with US Lacrosse).

Based on this data, a November 1999 birth date is a Class of 2017 graduate (one of the youngest in their 8th grade) and a U/13 player, one of the oldest in that age group. (Note that this DOES NOT account for late starting in school or being held back which we assume was not the case for our poster.)

It is very important that readers look at this data since those October/November birthdates tend to create most of the controversy and this example helps you to see why!

NY age cutoffs for school are different from most of the country. This puts NY at a disadvantage in athletics.

Most school systems are designed so that children are 5 years old when they start Kindergarten. The US Lacrosse age guidelines are designed to take this into account.

A child who is held back, for any reason (academic, emotional, physical, "red-shirting") generally needs to play "up" as a 7th grader as they are U-13 ineligible. 6th graders and 8th graders do not have this problem since there is a one year cushion with U13/U15 designations. 8th graders who are "older" do not need to sit out for a year. They can play U15 along with their classmates.

A child born the last four months of 1999 who is set to graduate HS in 2017 is actually a grade ahead of what is typical for his age. If in 8th grade this boy is playing competitive lacrosse he should be preparing for High School and playing U-15 or 8th grade divisions at tournaments. There is no reason for an 8th grader to play U-13 even if he is US Lacrosse eligible.

This is absolutely not an issue in soccer across the country and in fact has not been a discussion point on Back of THE NET in the last decade. New [lacrosse] is not in any disadvantageous situation because a school cut-off date might vary by 60 or 90 days.

US Lacrosse guidelines were drafted from USYSA. The mistake US Lacrosse is making is doing two-year U-brackets as opposed to single year brackets. In time, they will need to call out single year U-brackets.

If the conversation STOPS discussing anything in terms of GRADE, this playing up discussion will be eliminated. Players play based on their birth date period. Playing "up" then has nothing to do with academic grade.

Actually, this is a problem with the two year system as one 12-month bracket can be penalized. In fact, how can you support two year age groups with a disparity of as much as 23 months and then open this post with NY being at a disadvantage due to a 60 or 90 day shift?

Again, the discussion needs to move away from GRADE since it only clouds the discussion.

Cage - I agree with on the age thing and how single age year is the best way to have fair and competitive tournaments - but lacrosse is different from other sports because the college recruiting and the disproportionate number of college spots available to the relatively low number of high school kids that play. Lacrosse is a sport that sees some high schools sending 10 - 15 players a year play college lacrosse and most at great higher education facilities. the recruiting is getting younger and younger and IMHO a college coach does not want to see U15 game with 8th/9th and 10th graders in it. He wants to see a 2016 game that he knows he is comparing rising sophomores against rising sophomores - I think that a majority of soccer players are playing for the love of the game and to win championships at the club level while a majority of the lax players are trying to get recruited.

an example of what I am saying would be this weekends laxfest - all the chatter is about cheating and age and sandbagging divisions up to the eighth grade - but you talk to any HS kid or parent the only thing you hear is what coach from what school is on what field. It's Tuesday afternoon and I still have no idea who won the HS division and my kid played in it.

In a single Birth year lets say 2000 you will have boys spanning three grades. For the next academic year there will be boys in 7th, 8th and 9th grades.

US Lacrosse wants everyone to play age based, but this simply does not work. Should a U-13 eligble 8th grader really play U-13? Similar arguments can be made against grade based teams and events.

When playing for fun or as a hobby it really doesn't matter how teams are formed. There will be disagreeements forever, or at least until US Lacrosse establishes better credibility.

If a boy is serious about playing at the next level and/or being recruited, then grade based is better. This is how it is done in High School and this is how college recruiters want it to be. Recruiters are absolutely watching 2017 games this season and come next spring will be watching 2018. They care about what year you are coming to their school and not how old you are.

I am a terps parent and have no issue with that write up...didnt even though know they had a team website--i say good for them. nice place for the boys to see themselves, let's not make a big deal out of it. He gave plenty of credit to all the teams.

It is not unreasonable to see an Academically gifted and talented student born in 2000 who skipped a grade. The chance of that same child being a gifted lacrosse player may be small, but is not unreasonable.

Where I live the cutoff is Oct 1 1999. There are definitely October boys who should be in 2018 that are already in 2017. There is an August 1999 boy who started school late, not for red shirting purposes, who is in 2018.

In NY October 1999 should be 2017!! That's a fact if they are not gifted and skipped or did not hold back.

Day 1: What a way to start a tournament; Xtreme vs Express. A local rival, the Express Terps put up a great battle in the first game. Each team had their opportunities but the Goalies at both ends of the field weren't giving in so easily. In the end, Xtreme took the win by a score of 5-2.

Xtreme's next opponent came all the way from Texas to try their hand at beating the Xtreme. Very big, fast and physical.........all of which were used to try and shake the Xtreme off their game plan; but it just didn't work. Many thanks to the Texas Mustangs for coming all that way to Long Island and giving us a game.

Althouh the Xtreme had their hands full, they managed to keep the goals knotted at 3 for a final score of 3-3.



Semi-Finals: After some tournament confusion about which team would make the playoffs and which would be going home; Xtreme found themselves seeded 1st and facing off against the 4th seed Bucks Select team on the hot turf for a second time. The Express Terps would face the 91 Raiders in the other semi-final round. This time the Xtreme wasted no time and got on the board first with a quick goal. They stayed in the lead the entire game and won by a score of 6-4. The Terps beat the Raiders in a convincing 9-2 score.



Final: REMATCH. How appropriate that our cross town nemesis from the first game would be standing in the wings to be Xtreme's competition in the Championship game. It goes without saying that the Terps would be more than ready to show the Xtreme that they are a team to be reckoned with. The Terps played a great game and proved that on "Any Given Sunday", the best can be beat. Congrats to the Terps!!

In the context of Sports:

I know there are the academically gifted students but not the norm where they are really looking to advance their child a grade. These days the school systems and administration keep them within their grade and place them in advanced classes in whichever subject deemed appropriate(yes as low as 3rd grade). This helps the child assimilate to their academic surroundings without the social shock.


Not to mention, when the child gets into secondary school they have the opportunity to take university courses while still in HS.

I've never heard Extreme parents say they are unbeatable . I'm an Express parent and I know several of their parents and can only say nice things about them. Enough with the childish games. These teams are made up of hard working boys. Who cares which team you "with" . You are supposed to be adults. Act like it .

I have to agree. The boys from both teams are really good kids. There is a lot of talent on both sides. And Some of the parents from both sides are friendly and i believe most are respectful to all the boys. To the obnoxious parent/coach who always has a wise remark on and off the field why dont you go back under the rock that you crawled out from. You have posted so much negative crap on here you should be ashamed of yourself. These are young men coming out to learn a sport from people who are supposed to show some class. Stop bashing kids and the parents and maybe the dark cloud that has been over you will fade away. Good luck to both teams for the remainder of the season.

Wow,just wow.Im a 2018 Terp player. Good game everytime we play 91,orange and white,crabs,Dukes,Bucks,Laxachussetts,Edge,Team LI,Superstars,Texas. We have won lots of tournaments and lost some too,played lots of teams and had lots of fun.All of us know it can happen on Any given day of the week.We all have injuries and different players playing for each game.Sometimes we each play better or worse.It happens to ALL of us.Just play the game and win or loose say good game.Its over on to the next game.

Too expensive, and 35 minute games are a challenge to get good amt of playing time in,heat advisory in the past years shorten the games to 20 mins,and some years gamescancelled and not rescheduled.fri mandatory game is difficult on families traveling,lots of other great tourns that are better!

2018 Express terps, west cost stars, crabs, and a bunch of other good teams down in Baltimore this weekend at crab tourny. SHould be a good one.

Great tourny in Blatimore this weekend. Very hot, but great lax. 2018 terps went 4 and 1 lossing to the crabs in the semifinal. West coast stars, team from Penn, Edge from Canada very strong, crabs strong as ususal. Did not get to see the Madlax national team but heard they were also very strong...

Crabs beat Terps 5-1, hard fought game but Crabs goalie played amazing. Save after save...

for this past session the Brine Tryout was in December for LI - their website is not yet updated for next year

for Blue Chip it is now

if you are referring to the Blue Chip events, they are invite only, you must register to be invited for next year 2014. Invitees will be notified and the end of September. I believe these events are only for HS. You can go to the Blue Chip website for more information.

Next year, 2018s go. It is not invitation based, but application based. You can apply on their website and need to apply before September as acceptances are sent in September for a January 2014 clinic/tryout in Florida. If you do well in Florida (Top 120 out of 600) you get to go to Maryland in July 2015 for the Jake Reed event.

Believe it or not, in a few weeks, just as these boys start 8th grade, they are no longer considered middle schoolers but are classified as "rising freshmen"

If you want to play in Jan of 2014 and have a chance for July 2014 (playing as a rising Freshman) than you need to apply now.

If you want to avoid this until you are a rising sophomore than you can wait until next sumer to apply

My son plays for 91 Extreme, and spent last week at the Chaminade camp with 5 or 6 of his teammates and the same number of Express 2018 (and some 2017) Terps. They had a ball playing together. My son said he really liked the Express boys he met, played with and hung out with - they were friends at camp at will compete against each other for years, which is the way it's supposed to be.

i think the boys will be fine - it's parent behavior which leaves you scratching your head. The things being said and done by various parents at Patriot Games this past weekend were really amazing...it leaves you shaking your head. The kids will be fine if the parents could put a filter on their sideline rants.

a parent argument after one game where one dad invites another to go into the parking lot and settle things as their boys who just played a championship game come off and are looking at the dads...a dad standing with his son screaming 'lucky...lucky...lucky' at an attackmen who had just finished off a nice ball movement play - the dad screamed it six times as his son listened....i don't know, maybe it was the heat, maybe it was the stress of it being the last tournament of the Summer and guys are anxious about roster spots...i don't know, but it was a little weirder than usual..

There is a guy going around to all the top programs and asking their best kids if they want to form a "super" team. The guy is like a billionaire out of the some place on the north shore. He's paying for everything...guys name is S. Finch. Should be interesting....

stop the insanity, every kid is a free agent and not just year to year but week to week and game to game, no contracts and no loyalty either way. until someone wants to pay my kid to play for them he is under no obligation and as long as there are tryouts the team is under no obligation to the kids year to year, whats next, a team is going to set up some friendly games after the season and then have a kid from another team come down and play with them? that would never happen, next month are tryouts good luck to all.

FCA also looking to start a Long Island team...cheaper fees, better coaching, focus on the kids...watch out Express and 91!
