Yea, I suspect what happened was your high school coach missed the deadline to nominate players. There is also a limit to how many they can nominate, so maybe they just didn't want to be in a position of nominating some players over others.

Your area doesn't have tryouts for your school girls team? it's done by HS coach nominations?

On LI, you have to be nominated by your HS coach just to attend the tryouts. And then of course you must be selected. At least in theory, I couldn't say how closely this rule is actually followed.
