The Empire State Games were back in 2010 and the Scholastic Men's and Women's teams were again strong (20 players per team). The 2011 games will be in Rochester, New York. How many Long Island players tryout for the team and how does this work with the overlapping summer schedules of the lacrosse clubs? Can anyone help?

Tryouts for the boys Long Island team typically has about 100 kids turn out. Both the boys and girls squads are considered a real All-Star event which contributes to Long Island winning year after year. College coaching traffic from New York schools and the surrounding states is typically very strong (about 50-75 coaches for boys and girls for the three games plus playoff games).

Years back, the scholastic soccer teams also dominated the competition. More and more tournaments and options on the soccer side has decreased the dominance and medal counts that Long Island soccer once enjoyed at this event.

Report: 2011 Empire State Games canceled
November 17, 2010 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ALBANY, N.Y. - A published report says the 2011 Empire State Games have been canceled because of New York's $9 billion budget gap.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that Winter Games administrator Lisa Del Signore has written a letter to athletes informing them that the winter, summer, senior and games for the physically challenged have been canceled.

From the Adirondack Daily Enterprise

State cancels Empire State Games
November 16, 2010 - By CHRIS KNIGHT, Enterprise Senior Staff Writer

The budget axe in Albany has claimed another victim.

The state has cancelled next year's Empire State Games, including the Winter Games, which have been held in Lake Placid each February for more than 20 years. The Empire State Summer Games, Games for the Physically Challenged and Senior Games have also been called off, several sources told the Enterprise.

The website for the Empire State Games was down Tuesday. A spokesperson for the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, which runs the games, referred questions to the state Division of Budget.

DOB spokesman Erik Kriss wouldn't say whether the games had been cancelled and declined to comment when asked why the website was down. He said the state is in the process of determining what Parks Department employees will be laid off as part of Gov. David Paterson's plan to achieve $250 million in workforce savings included in the 2010-2011 budget.

"Until final layoff notices go out on Dec. 10 we will not know exactly what positions are affected and won't be able to comment on the impact to specific programs or services," he said.

While that's what the state is saying publicly, the decision to cancel the games has already been made, mulitple sources confirmed to the Enterprise Tuesday.

Ken McInerny, the games' Central Region Director, said the news that the games were being cancelled was delivered by state ESG staff to the games' regional directors in a 1 p.m. conference call Tuesday.

"I'm just kind of absorbing it," he said. "Apparently there was no money put in the budget for it. The outgoing administration didn't have any interest in continuing it and I don't know if the incoming administration knows anything about it."

The news had reached officials in Lake Placid by mid-afternoon Tuesday.

"I heard it through the rumor mill, then I basically called the Empire State Games office in Albany and confirmed it," said James McKenna, president and CEO of the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau. "The state is recognizing that it still has to make some tough decisions and I guess they're starting to make them."

Town of North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi called it "a disappointing sign of the times."

"It's not only unfortunate for Lake Placid, it's unfortunate for the young athletes of New York State," he said. "It was a wonderful event. It's too bad it's lost. I just hope that the cutting stops soon."

McKenna said he got the impression that the games may not just be cancelled not just for next year, but permanently.

"They're talking about eliminating positions in state parks and reassigning people," McInerny said. "If they're dismantling the state staff and sending them elsewhere, I think the chances of it coming back at all are pretty remote. The fact that they took down the website says an awful lot."

"My guess is it would be more of a chance of it being permanent than not," Politi added. "The fact is that it's probably going to take a few years for the economics of New York State to change."

The Empire State Games is an Olympic-style competition for amateur athletes from different regions across the state: Adirondack, Central, Hudson Valley, Western, New York City and Long Island. Launched by former Gov. Hugh Carey, the first summer games were held in 1978.

This isn't the first time the state has put the Empire State Games on the chopping block due to budget problems. In 2009, the summer Empire State Games were cancelled due to a lack of state funding.

This posting within the last two hours states that Monroe County executive, Maggie Brooks, is trying to save this year's games - read on.

Monroe Co. to try to salvage Empire State Games
Posted at: 11/17/2010 12:04 PM | Updated at: 11/17/2010 12:06 PM

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks says the county will try to salvage Empire State Games.

A day after the state said its pulling funding for the games, Brooks says she and the local committee will try to raise the money to save them.

The Empire State Games were scheduled to be held in Rochester next summer.

Brooks says it takes $500,000 to $1,000,000 to run the games and will try to raise the funds especially from corporate sponsors. Brooks says there is no money in the county budget to use.

According to the Monroe County Sports Commission, the county committed $200,000 for the games and New York State committed $1.2-million to $1.3-million.

With the states current economic situation and Empires being cancelled (permanently), will the rising (Sophomore, Junior, Senior) player showcase return this year? If so any info on tryouts and coaches?

The preliminary word is that the Long Island showcase games will be back this year and tryouts will be scheduled for the first week of June. BOTC will bring you the news as soon as it is made available.

Early reports are that the tryouts will be held at Bay Shore High School and we are attempting to confirm this for the Long Island lacrosse community.

The Showcase Teams will be a public school only function that the Nassau and Suffolk Public schools ooaches are arranging.

This should have been clear from the beginning to anyone that read the sign up papers. Last year, rather than have separate tryouts for the showcase teams, evaluations were done during the Empire tryouts.

Empire tryouts were open to everyone, but the private school kids were only being evaluated for Empire team and this should have been clear from the beginning.

The Showcase is an invitational event. So, the Nassau/Suffolk public school showcase will have its own tryouts this year since there are no Empires.

Last year, it was MANDATORY to attend the Empire tryout to be considered for the Showcase team. The big conflict last year that fueled most of the conspiracies was that the Empire second round, which was mandatory for Rising Juniors and Seniors Suffolk Showcase kids, was held on the same night as the Under Armour tryouts. So the Rising Juniors and Seniors in Suffolk county could not attend Under Armour tryouts, which many of them had paid for in advance.

Under Armour changed the dates after the Empire tryouts were scheduled.
