Some serious noise here. Anybody want to fill in the color? All we know is Rotanz was fired/quit. Why? Was he too hard on the little Johnnys and Billyboys? The guy won. How many kids got scholarships because of this coach? This guy is good.

Several articles have been posted in the last 72 hours regarding this move by the Shoreham-Wading River school district.

From the Riverhead News-Times

Article Link : Lacrosse Legend Out after 19 years as SWR Coach

For the first time in nearly 20 years, Tom Rotanz won’t be on the sidelines with the Shoreham-Wading River varsity boys lacrosse team this spring.

Superintendent Steven Cohen confirmed Tuesday night he will not recommend Mr. Rotanz to be reinstated as coach and said the district has posted the position and other coaching jobs in the district as available.

As usual politics destroys everything ending in kids getting the blunt end of the stick , Great way to stick it to them is take over Rocky Point program being he is a teacher there it would be feasible . Rocky Point needs to remove the existing relic and get up with the times as lacrosse has evolved tremendously and Coach R is one to bring this program to the next level and create something good in that district !

Great guy and former lax star himself! It's a shame that school disricts are so easily swayed. Reminicent of Sean Keenan, another WM graduate! Just Terrible!

This is a result of the serious hazing incident two months back. BOTC hosted a major discussion on the College Forum regarding this subject where we anticipated DeLuca's dismissal and caught a significant amount of criticism for our position regarding the history of hazing on the Cornell campus.

What is terrible is your analogy. Do some research on why Keenan got fired.

I disagree with the word "serious" as it pertains to the Cornell hazing incident. From my understanding and sources close to the Cornell program it was a drinking game that one of the freshman was involved in and he told his mother about it. The mother brought it to the school administration. Pretty harmless incident, definitely not worthy of a man losing his job.

We have been over all of this ground but in summary :
  • Serious => Hazing => Zero Tolerance Program at Cornell - The University has had to deal with student death on the campus; hazing is considered a very serious infraction at that campus.
  • Freshman => Drinking Game => Underage Drinking and Adult Social Hosts => Against The Law
  • Parent => Athletic Director - Clearly, something happened where the coach was not in this discussion - or worse yet, was in the discussion.
So, summarizing : a Zero-Tolerance environment, illegal drinking in a hazing environment, and an athletic director involved. Cornell is different from many campuses given the number of student-related issues that you can research elsewhere.

This conversation belongs on the College Forum thread as this discussion was focused on today's breaking high school varsity news.

where does he go from here? he built that swr program from the ground up. can't go restart that. club? his own or join one (works in the same school with another renown coach) - the club scene is so saturated - a coach like this would be welcome. could probably hold tryouts tomorrow and field a competitive team by spring. or does he just chill and watch his boys play some lax...

Here is the story at Shoreham-Wading River A TRUE CALL TO ARMS!

At this time, Superintendent Cohen has decided that he will not hire coach Tom Rotanz as Head Coach for SWR Varsity Boys Lacrosse team. Coach Rotanz has a superlative coaching record, a .710 winning percentage over 19 years at SWR. He has brought the SWR name to the forefront of the college and high school lacrosse community and has launched one of the most sought after college lacrosse recruiting showcase on Long Island. The showcase is the Fall Classic and is one of the few showcases that features high school teams only, with 20 of the best high school teams in the northeast participating. The SWR athletes that participate in this showcase are fortunate for the exposure they get to college coaches.

Unimaginably, Superintendent Cohen has decided to not hire Tom Rotanz as our coach because he believes that he is too controversial. What it really means is that he does not understand the role of sports and the part they play in enriching the lives of the students at SWR and how Coach Rotanz plays a significant role in that process.

I think Coach will be just fine after reading that resume. I bet the club thing is on his mind. How about the LI Tomcats... Nice play on words. SWR mascot is the wildcat, the tomcat is the nickname of the [lacrosse] produced here on li (very close to swr)and tom is is his first name.
