Box Lacrosse Question:
Is it worth it to get your kid involved at this age? I know it is extremely popular in Canada and other areas but LI does not seem to have many options. How is the NOTB program I have seen and read about? Any advice would be helpful. Box is great for midfielders and attack players. Not sure how long poles feel about playing it with a short stick. Unfortunately if you want to play real high quality box you will need to travel off Long Island. And when I say travel I mean drive for a 2-3 hours. Couple of programs seem to be starting up on Long Island. But in the end you will still need to travel far for high quality tournaments Save your money, it’s just a winter revenue stream for these clubs. Many kids get hurt as they get hit from behind into the boards.

It is worth it if you have an offensive player and can find a team that will coach it the right way with constant movement on offense. Too many American teams treat it as a side project with seasons that are too short to get the benefits of needing to learn to operate in tight spaces. Also, the referring can be horribly inconsistent, even for youth sports. Usually not a safety issue, but let's just say you don't want bad refs when you're facing an out-of-control team from the city with the worst sports fans in the country.

So is the much-talked-about shift to 91 or Express that’s all over this forum something that’s been happening more recently? Team 91 has definitely been a standout for a long time. I keep seeing mentions of “just look at the 29s”—has this kind of movement happened regularly even when strong alternatives like Rebels and Igloo (currently ranked much higher) were available? Asking for a friend...

Asking for a friend... It seems to happen when the kids get very close to recruiting ages. There is definitely some movement in 8th with kids reclassing and headed to private school in 9th. The top clubs will make a hard push to get the top kids and will tell parents to look at the commitments for clubs like the rebels compared to 91 or express. If you look at the 26 class the results speak for themselves. Clubs like the rebels and igloo have very few D1 commits. 91 and express have almost their whole teams committed to top D1 schools.

Asking for a friend... 91 and Express have been the standard for a while. They have a track record of putting together the top teams from LI. They have always improved with older groups bc many start out at other clubs and then feel they have to leave to play on one of the top teams. There is definitely a shift and there are more options than ever before. Igloo and Rebels are both stronger at the younger ages. They both do a good job of developing kids. It does not seem that the mass exodus from these 2 programs is happening like many have proclaimed. Express is still a top 4 or 5 team at this age group but 91 is definitely still not a competitive AA team.

Igloo and Rebels with both get better going into World Series year. They will be favorites to win it. The 3 year posts of kids leaving is not happening. Will be movement like always, but will be to this top teams.

No one would touch those parents with a 10 foot pole even if they wanted to leave. Igloo will be interesting. Only because a lot of those kids are from Nassau towns that usually play for express or 91. If any of the igloo kids go to Chaminade or St. Anthony, I can't see them staying with igloo. If there will be any movement it will not be until 8th-9th grade.

However, the majority are great parents and just want their kids to grow and be successful. 91 has some real pompous, entitled @ChillLaxin on that sideline. Rebels is more of a blue collar group. Both can rub people the wrong way at times. I think it is great when the GC, Manhasset crew has to eat some crow and lose to some Suffolk county folk from Pat Med or ESM.

Adida All State Games "Prime Time Lax" Anyone know anything about this? My son did it last year. We really enjoyed it. Its like PLL jrs with that its teams made up of kids from around the country. Each team is coached by a different college coach (they are assigned to the field so they rotate coaches). Its at the end of the summer also. With IL being part of it that could help some of the older boys as they are going into hs also you can get some game film if you want

Connor Farrell is going to have tryouts this Summer for a legit Box 31/30 team. 4 tournaments from PA to Ct. Is my understanding.

Dukes tied with Madlax 5 -5 and then count smoked by NL 10-1. NL is the real deal and earned that #1 ranking. They dont have any holes with their roster.

They already have a group of core kids and won a tough tourney and came in 2nd in the regional qualifier. If you wanna get into competitive Box lax you definitely want to consider the Hawks/Zombies!!!

Best Teams in 2031 (my personal opinion )
Tier 1 Group: 1) MadLax - #21 attack is the best 2031 player in the class (from what I have seen). They are good everywhere and dominate faceoffs. 2) NextLevel - actually have not seen them but hear from all coaches they are pretty outstanding group 3) Rebels - very well coached. Very talented. 4) Igloo - also well coached & very talented (feel like they have overall better talent than Rebels Stealth, just was more impressed by Rebels in fall)
Tier 2 Group: 5) 91 CO Outlaws - this team is worth a watch if you have not seen them. Extremely talented attack and defense. 6)SweetLax FL - full of top notch players but wasn't impressed by their coaching AT ALL. College kids letting their top dogs dodge & shoot every time. 7)Towermen - saw them play at The Holiday Bowl & came away impressed by their talent/shooters. Coaches were ripping their kids during warm up. 8)Dukes Elite - have a pretty amazing lefty attackmen. Great goalie. Think I saw them on an off weekend.
Tier 3 (missing a ton of teams here): 2Way, Chucks (have never been impressed by them other than goalie), Crabs, Ann. Hawks (but heard theyre breaking up), SL Upstate (best goalie in the class). From the west coast - Alcatraz Outlaws, Mad Dog West, Colorado Kings all solid teams too.
2031 is very, very competitive group and I can see any of the top 8 teams beating each other. next level looks hands down the best team in the nation. Watched them this weekend at their hosted tournament. They have literally no holes in their roster. They absolutely exposed Dukes who has no business being ranked 6. They had virtually no attack and a goalie who is overhyped. Not sure what happened with Madlax but their scores were very odd. They bear clippers 19-1 in fall but only beat them 9-3 on Sunday.

Please donrt tell me but they beat them once..... Look at the big picture. Igloo is the best team on LI right now and Rebels are number 2 based on overall performance. This includes all tournaments played locally and out of town. 91 does not enter any competitive tournaments with the 2031 age group so please stop with the 91 references.

Smacked you around at NAL. Easily beat you in last year spring jam. Pretty sad if you are bringing up scrimmage wins. We win where it counts.......in tournaments.

Boasting about a box game where neither team even has all their players would be like igloo boasting how they curb stomped you in two straight scrimmages this year. Give it a rest already. The box league does not mean that the Rebels are better than Igloo. However, if you watched the game (and yes both teams had some guys missing) it was clear who the better lacrosse team is. That could change this spring/summer. We will see. Our team has had the same core of kids for about 3 or 4 years now. The coaches are both high energy and quality lacrosse minds. The 2 main guys have no kids on the team which means you earn your time on the field. Our roster size is smaller than any other AA team around. If you have a kid that can play at this high level and want a solid, consistent team that will compete with anyone then you may want to give the Rebels a look. See all you haters in the spring.

Igloo and Rebels will continue to scrimmage, practice together, etc because the coaches have nothing but respect for one another and they agree that iron sharpens iron. These boys will play with and against each other for YEARS to come. Who wins? Who cares. Compete and get better. But I agree, if your kids not trying out or training to get on either of these two teams, you’re wasting their time and letting them fail. It’s those two and “the rest.”
