Sorry you son couldnt cut it. Elite is elite, Iron Sharpens iron. He is right , if you are that good in a outlier sport like lacrosse and you are not on Varsity in 9th grade. Well, lacrosse abd D1 wont be in the future.

Enough of the BB, Football sports. Those are in a different arena.

If your son is a freshman playing Varsity, the odds are he plays for a public school and they aren’t very good.

This in most cases for sure

Holdback Dad bragging about his freshman son that should be a sophomore is criticizing true freshman for not playing up? This guy is dense.

Keep reaching. It's not playing up when you're on Varsity, it's just playing. Regardless of what their record is, playing with older, stronger kids makes you better.
You must love how your son shines on the JV circuit against marginal competition.

I am not sure yet if my 9th grade son will be playing varsity or not. However, making a statement like you did above only reinforces your lack of intelligence. Not sure if your child is a holdback or not but it really does not matter. You are still a fool and many athletes who do not play varsity as a freshman go on to play at high levels in college.

Sorry your freshman son isn't playing varsity. There are lots of great D2 and D3 places for him to play lacrosse in college.

Excelsior Games = Joke

LI Lacrosse Showcase = Helped my older son quite a bit with recruiting. Even the second round of tryouts has a lot of coaches. If they make the top 25 game, even more (higher quality too)

lol. Moronic. If you are a freshman and contributing on varsity great for you and that is a great indicator.. but plenty of kids that become great prospects later develop differently. There are many examples of guys at big time HS programs that are still on JV as Sophs. Pat Spencer would be the poster child of many. And lastly.. those late bloomers that do eventually make it albeit late are not concerned about what is said on this board. They are busy grinding getting better because they love lacrosse and they are tuning this nonsense out.

And if he holds back like your son he instantly will be better than your son. Amazing how it takes no effort to be top of your class when you reclass!

If your Son is a freshman and playing varsity (I am talking about contributing in games) you're probably in a mid-low or low-level school district. If your son is a freshman on a team in the power conference and contributing in games ..... KUDOS Future is bright. Very few kids are playing up in 9th grade in the power - conference and contributing and we all know Nassau teams have their up and down years. Really, no consistency outside of GC and Manhassett.

The statement should read if your kid isn't getting an award (All Conference/All-County/All-County HM) by 10th grade then most likely they're not a serious prospect. The award is more meaningful on where the team falls in ranking!

Winning All conference on a 8th ranked team is the same as winning All conference on the 1st ranked team.

Doesn't mean they won't get recruited to D1 school but odds are they're not standout.

1 guy? This ia so inspirational , maybe your JV standout could follow in Spencer’s footsteps. Be warned, however, JV at Boys Latin is worlds away from a JV program in bumf*ck Scruffolk County. Good luck.

You missed some key words. I said 1 poster child of MANY. I also said BIG TIME HS programs. If you are at a public or generally weaker program… yes you should probably be on varsity as a frosh. But a top 30 national HS is indeed very different.

Only in rare cases, like Pat Spencer and a handful of others, do players get stuck on JV, and that’s only because they were on a top 10 nationally ranked lacrosse team. Even Spencer would’ve been on Varsity anywhere else if he hadn’t been behind Stanwick and Heacock—two future Division 1 All-Americans.

Sorry, parents—I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but outside of those elite programs, if your kid isn’t on Varsity by 9th grade, you can kiss those D1 dreams goodbye. As they say, forget about it.

Keep dreaming if you want, but facts are facts.

Yes parents, just do what Holdback Dad did and have your average playing son repeat a grade and magically he will be a D1 recruit. Was it hard work? Hours in the gym? No, just repeat a grade and then look down on all the kids your own age that don’t go D1. FYI speak to someone that has played or is currently playing D1 and ask them their daily schedule, not sure it’s worth it!

Wink doesn't get quality coaches to come watch those games. It was a complete waste of money. It was mostly SUNY schools on the sidelines.

Pat Spencer did not get stuck on JV or cut from Varsity. Coaches knew the talent and made a conscious choice to play him on JV as a sophomore. He had Heacock, Stanwick, and Colin Chell as Seniors in front of him. What was the coach going to do, say thanks guys for 4 years but this sophomore is going to be the difference. Absolutely not. Spencer played and played and played a lot on JV. Ever consider that the year of all the reps and all the ball going through him helped? Take the reps was our philosophy.

Comparing “holdback” kids to the young men of back in the day doesn’t make sense to me. Are you really a lover of the game? Do you watch? The physicality and what college coaches hone in on has completely changed. You will always have your smaller shifty guys but brute strength makes a heck of a difference.
If your kid loves the game and wants to play D1 and get into the school of their choice Id hold back for skill development and size alone. The haters will always have an issue! If you go to any of the college camps and you live in NY those kids are 15/16. If you have a skilled kid, give them a fishing chance. Ignore the BS

What does your kid want to go to college? Does he just want to play D1 and doesn’t care about classes because that’s what it sounds like. He can play lacrosse anywhere and doesn’t need college for that and he doesn’t need to waste a year of his life repeating 8th grade. Newsflash PlL players have other jobs, they have to because they get paid squat. Your kid can get a great education without playing lacrosse and your kid can have fun playing lacrosse without playing D1, these sound like your unaccomplished dreams.

Morning-re: the excelsior games/LILJ showcase. My older son did the excelsior games 2 years ago. Didn't know what to expect, wasn't there necessarily to "get looked at". It was more for the experience of playing against other kids in a competitive setting. Could I have spent my money elsewhere? probably, but he enjoyed the experience of it.

The NYS one, where the different counties play each other (forgot the name). That was fun for him. Competitive tryout, everyone trying to make the final 50 to hopefully make the final roster. Cool experience, he was fortunate to make the game. Again, he wasn't doing it for recruiting purposes, it was more for the experience. I think 9th grade is probably a little too early to worry about being seen by college coaches, but if those who promote these don't include the college coaches being in attendance, I guess many kids won't sign up, thus, money grab. Just giving my opinion of it. Good luck.

Good to see you using your brain and realizing it aint happening for him.

How do you know what the Boys Latin coach was thinking?

Have you read anything about Spencer or know anyone in Baltimore , in the know, then you wouldnt say such silly things. Know it is hard to take, but holdbacks have an advantage as do freshman Varsity players.

said noone, ever. Thanks for the concern but he’ll be fine.

Will he though? Accomplishments that you didn’t earn the proper way always eat at you. No one will give holdback son credit for anything. You better hope shorty grows! Not a great look to hold the kid back and he doesn’t grow.

All this fake sympathy. Recent holdbacks from LI have done really well in NCAA and PLL. Are you speaking from experience? Pls share.

Wow they were able to land jobs in PLL paying 45K? Tell me more!!

Sorry I don’t do internet research on grown men who played lacrosse. Clearly you do. How many bottles of baby oil did you borrow from Diddy during your research?
