Mostly agree, but you can actually have all of that and a good lacrosse team if you choose Penn, Princeton or Stanford (too far) or NW (far, but a real shot at a championship). The other schools that have chances at championships are definitely not even close academically. It’s a shame that Yale, Harvard and Columbia can’t get their lax teams straightened out!

“If you choose Penn, Princeton or Stanford or Northwestern “ …. Pretty sure those programs have to choose the player. Relatively very few players receive offers from the schools that you mentioned, it’s not as simple as “choosing “ …. The school has to offer you a spot.

As far as Yale, Harvard and Columbia getting their lax teams “straightened out” it will not happen anytime soon. There is not enough talent to go around, that is why we see the same 10 - 15 teams always at the top. It’s not just the three schools that you mentioned, a lot of very good schools have a hard time bringing in top tier talent.

Congratulations to the young woman and her parents and best of luck to all who are going through the process. Be thankful for all of the opportunities that this sport provides.

Yes, all valid points. However Penn and Princeton have strong lax and top academics, Yale, Harvard and Columbia should be able to also. I guess it is harder than it seems. NW is really the only top 10 school that has the whole package, despite not being in a traditional east coast setting. Wonder how they do it?

It all comes down to recruiting, the best programs get the best recruits. There is not an endless supply of players who are considered a "top recruit" and an even smaller number of "top recruits" with the academic credentials required to get accepted at Yale, Harvard and Columbia. There seem to be a lot of parents who do not understand the fact that the best programs get the large majority of the best players and if a player is not being offered a spot by the top programs then that player is most likely not a top player. The coaches at the best programs do not get it wrong very often, if they did they would not consistently be a top program. I am not trying to be a donk, it's just the way it is. It is very difficult to compete with the best programs if you do not bring in top tier talent. Programs like Maryland, North Carolina, Boston College, Northwestern, Syracuse, Princeton, Virginia, Florida, Penn, Stony Brook, Notre Dame, Duke, Penn State, JMU and a few others seem to gobble up the best players every year. When you think about it, that is a pretty diverse list of schools, most of the top players will be able to find a home (good fit) at one of those schools and if a top player wants to go to the West Coast they can choose USC or Stanford both have very competitive lacrosse programs.

Define "whole package". As for how they do it, well that's pretty simple... Northwestern is an excellent academic institution, with a very rich history / tradition in women's lacrosse, the program is fully funded and has incredible facilities, the coaches have the ability to bring in just about any player they want regardless of the players academics although they are reluctant to bring in players who they believe will struggle academically, NU does not work off of an "Academic Index" the way The Ivy's do and they do not have a "slot" cap like Duke does, Northwestern is not only fully funded for Athletic Scholarships they also have excellent need based aid. Big 10 Athletics, a beautiful campus, nice town (Evansville) and close proximity to Chicago, and a very good coaching staff.

Bottom line, the majority of top recruits want to go to one of the top programs.

I would say that the whole package is top 10 academic, top 5 lacrosse. A school with a legitimate (not long shot) chance at National Championship. Otherwise you sacrifice one or the other. I personally would want my daughter to go the best academic school she could get into that has decent lacrosse, rather than the lower academic school with a strong chance of a championship. But…..the school has to want her!

Wow, anything outside the Top 5 is now considered only decent?

Yes, the perennial great programs average out a finish in the top 5, obviously it doesn't happen every year. Like a MD, NU, SU, UNC, BC. Many others just outside.

Interesting that you say that you want your daughter to go to the best academic school yet you seem to prioritize lacrosse when talking about The Whole package…. Top 5 lacrosse but Top 10 academic… ;-)

Bottom line—most of these young women will not have a lacrosse career. They love to play and playing in college will be the last hurrah for the majority, so choosing a top academic school is what sets them up for their future. Lacrosse or whatever sport is what sets them apart in a pool full of 4.0+ GPAs, a full load of AP and Honors courses and strong test scores. So committing to an Ivy (really committing to the application process) is amazing.

There is only one school that meets that criteria. It's Northwestern. But they're not interested in my daughter. So I would now lean towards more of a strong academic vs lacrosse. I also am not interested in traveling lacrosse the country to watch games, although we had interest there. Some other good options for us. It's all about priorities and options. Good luck!

Fool. Get over yourself and your self righteous nonsense.

Watching Notre Dame Vs Florida State football, ND Quarter Back originally verbally committed to Notre Dame to play lacrosse , he then switched to go play football at Wisconsin, he lost his starting Job when he was injured, he transferred to Notre Dame and is The ND Starting QB.

Yes, he definitely should have honored his original commitment. Give me a break.

Next time a women’s lacrosse player switches from lax to football you can tell-post this…

This is not at all an example of what anyone here is talking about. First, he's a grad transfer - spent four years on roster at WI so how did he not honor his commitment? I don't know his intentions when he committed to UND for lax, but hard to hold it against someone for choosing a different sport with a full ride scholarship.

Don't make a commitment you don't intend to keep, or you hope not to keep. It's really that simple. There are valid reasons players decommit or transfer. Not a problem, sometimes happens, but players shouldn't commit to a program unless they have the best intentions to play there. Don't encourage your kids to commit when you plan to keep shopping around for something better. Besides, top programs are indeed recruiting top 2023s as of 9/1 and if your daughter is not hearing from those programs real soon, it most likely means you're not being realistic and using covid as an excuse.

I don’t think this went through earlier. If it did or does I’m so sorry for the repost.

My daughter was on 2023 bandits, now 91. We weren’t overly happy with the coaching staff, but thought that staying at this point would be easier than trying to move her. She really wanted to stay with her friends as well so we made the choice to stay. Unfortunately, it is even more unorganized than in the past and there is no sign that the tournaments will be any better than we had with just bandits. We came back and paid under the impression that we’d have a full team even without having tryouts. Sadly many players who verbally committed to come back did not and it seems like numbers are getting lower and lower.

While my daughter and her close friends have paid, we are likely going to make the call to move to another club. My fear is that with one year left, this could hurt her. Friends from other clubs said that being on 91 of bandits was already a set back. So maybe moving is still a better option than staying on a tram falling apart with coaches and an organization we aren’t finding any success with?

Now that tryouts are over, I also fear that there aren’t any other spots left for her let alone her friends. Are there any 23 teams with open spots?

Im torn on what to do and would love advice from other parents in navigating this. Is it worth it to stick it out and risk this team folding (from talking to other parents it seems many are secretly planning their departure.) does anyone know of skilled 23 teams with spots open?

Any advice or input would help. This is my first run around with recruiting and my husband and I are worried.

Sounds like someone is afraid of someone else going to BC. We all know if the Jesters girl goes there everyone else takes a back seat. Who doesn’t want the #1 recruit ?

First, the number one girl is not from the Jesters, and she is also not going to BC. The way it works, is schools have a certain amt they want to recruit for each position. Like 2-3 Mid, 2-3 Att, 2-3 Def, 1 G, If two girls were offered at the same position from BC, they were most likely given a time frame to make the decision. There is only so much money to be given out, and both of those girls would not be getting the big scholarship, although they could both probably go. Now that they have a top Middie, they will focus on getting a top attacker. Besides, in my opinion, the YJ girl will be a better college player, and Jesters girl not looking to sit. I am also not "afraid" of anyone committing to BC. Excellent school, just not the right fit for my daughter. Good luck to everyone making these important decisions. Such an exciting time!

How about just being happy for girls that commit to anywhere - whether it's a top 10 school or not, whether it's D2 or D3. These girls work hard to get the offer, be happy for them. PERIOD.

No matter what this is a tough situation. I’d leave 91. If the team is on the verge of folding, you should secure a spot elsewhere before there are none.

Thanks for your input, everyone should be sure to contact you or one of the other chest pounding blow hards who believe themselves to be the arbiters of commitment, just to make sure that their reason is acceptable to you.

The original post was simple and definitive, it stated "you should honor your commitment.". Some of you then jumped on anyone who suggested that such a command was myopic as it implied that once a player verbally commits as 16 or 17 year old girl they must honor that commitment or they somehow lack conviction, character or honor. Your self righteous, moral high ground view of the recruiting / committing process is laughable. On the one hand you put your foot down and imply that it is selfish to change your commitment but then justify reasons that you believe changing your commitment to be acceptable.

Just go away and worry about your own daughter, nobody needs your parenting advice.

To each her own, every situation is different, there will be times when some players want to change their commitment, it is a personal choice and it is the choice of the player and her parents. It is not for you to judge or decide which reasons are acceptable.

By the way, the post regarding the ND Quarter Back illustrates exactly why the "you should honor your commitment" crowd is shortsighted and foolish. Circumstances, situations and opportunities change all the time, it is foolish to not not do what is best for the individual.

Not one post indicated that a player should make a commitment while not intending to honor that commitment. All that was pointed out was that the blanked statement "you should honor your commitment" was myopic. Which it is.

Your thinking is too simple. BC would love to have both middies and top players relish the opportunity to play with other elite players they don't shy away from competition. Teams also play with 4-6 middies. Heck, UNC had 3 #1 middies last year. BC also has plenty of talent in their 2022 and 2021 classes. Unless they have a specific niche need like goalie or lefty attacker they will get the best talent they can regardless of position.

Agreed. Also have hear that the team is likely going downhill. You were in a bad place to begin with being bandits then 91. No good recruits coming out of there. Good luck in your search for a new team!

While all you guys are laser focused on Strong Island, looks like a middie from Delaware just committed to BC. Also while you jokers are fighting about team rankings, it looks like her club team was ranked 31. Guess those rankings don't matter after all.

Ha... you are correct, the ranking do not matter at all. It has been said many times, there will be a lot of delusional parents getting a wake up call when they realize that the offers from the top 10 - 20 programs are not coming.

Or maybe they are coming and the girls are taking their time before making an all important decision? You will always see a couple girls from low ranking programs commit to great schools. But the top half of the rosters of YJ, TG, Jesters, and Legacy will all commit to big time schools. Give it a month.

The Top half? Do you really believe that there will be 50 plus girls from Long Island committing to “Big Time” schools? I guess you would have to define “big time”. My guess is more like half that number, maybe 20 - 25 to what most would define as Big Time.

So your saying that Boston College, JMU and of course Navy and Army aren't big time schools? That is where the 2023 commits have come from thus far. Laughable... There were many more 2022 commits at this point. And many were able to get on campus and clinics prior to Covid's impact (Fall 2020, Winter 2021) so you can't use that as an excuse. I think there are going to be many surprises for the 2023 parents....

Yes they will.because they are very good players, not because of their clubs rank.

22's were not on campuses during recruiting last fall (Fall of 2020). Everything started shutting down the Winter of 2020. No coaches could come to any of their summer tournaments Summer 2020. That's why the 22 class recruited quicker. 23's have the ability to go to official visits, 22's did not

Looks like the definition of “big time” has a different meaning to different people… IMHO Big Time would be Boston College, UNC, Maryland, Northwestern, Syracuse, Princeton, Florida, Virginia, Duke, Penn, Notre Dame, JMU, Penn State, USC, Stanford and maybe a couple of others. Army & Navy are in there own category for the incredible individuals who choose to go that route. Stony Brook is a Top 10 Program but is not for everyone.
