Many kids on TG2023 played in HS playoffs and didn’t get punished for choosing HS over travel. That’s not why her playing time was limited.

I cannot wait to go through this process with my son in a revenue sport. The rules for football, etc and the money thrown at these guys is just tiresome to hear about when you are trying to figure out what to do with your very talented daughter in the sport of lacrosse.

Right now, I'm just holding the weekend of the 19th because it seems like every coach is doing their prospect day on that day. We will wait for the Sept 1 litmus test. Our club coach still not getting calls from d1 coaches (we are not with a power program like YJ, and we have not asked our coach to reach out to any programs yet) but lots of communication (one way) with daughter from d1 coaches in responses to her emails -- programs that are a step below the biggies mentioned here but very much the kinds of places where she would love to commit. Fingers crossed!

Is it expected that calls that come on or abiut 9/1 will result in girls having to go to more prospect days or camps? Is that the process ?

There will generally be three tiers. Girls in the first tier will be offered official visits and get offers right away. Once those girls commit they will go after the second tier recruits. Third tier and below will be encouraged to attend the prospect day to possibly moved up to a higher tier. This process can take days or months so be prepared. Good luck to all!

From what I understand from this forum and our coach’s comments, very tippy top prospects (1-20?) — kind of kids getting calls from BC MD and UNC are going to hear right away with offers. There have already been back door conversations about these players between coaches and clubs. For the rest of the kids, it’s just the start of the conversation and will involve future prospect days and camps because the coach will want to see more of the player in action.

MD? Strange you put them with the other schools you mentioned. Unless you live in MD, not a top choice. Program has been declining

The winningest program in college lacrosse history has gone exactly one season without winning a championship ……. Yes you are correct , they are in a decline.

Laughable to say that it is "strange" to put Maryland with BC and UNC.

As far as girls having to go to more prospect days or camps, IMHO the answer is yes. The Top Programs know who they want and they will make offers right away but we are talking about a small number of players (UA Senior caliber players).

The Top Programs do not cast a very big net, nor do the top recruits. We are talking about 15 to 20 schools fighting for the top 50 or so recruits, each of those schools usually picks up 2 or 3 of those Top recruits. The top programs will not offer a spot to other players if there are still players (who the coach considers elite) still on the board. The majority of those top recruits usually choose one of the top programs.

Coaches have their lists and their priorities i.e. Goalie, Draw Specialist, Lefty, Defender etc... Their lists are not just a bunch of names, they have the players ranked and they try to get the players they have ranked highest on their list. If coaches , especially if it's the head coach is talking with you daughter and is willing to meet with your daughter but is not willing to commit your daughter it is likely because the coach is trying to get players that they have ranked higher. As players commit coaches adjust their lists and sometimes want to see players compete again. It is definitely a process and things constantly change.

For the majority of girls this can be a stressful time, help her stay positive and not get down when others are committing. If she is not a top tier recruit make sure that she makes all of the the coaches at the schools that she is interested in aware of her interest. When you get outside the elite programs (the ones that just about everyone would like to go to) it is very important that the coaches know that your daughter really wants to go to the school.

I’m hard pressed to think of a women’s lacrosse player being recruited that wouldn’t take Cathy Reese’s call. If they wouldn’t, they are the fool.

In My, and my daughter's opinion, there are many better options. She would obviously take the call, but it would be nowhere near her first choice. MD is to Maryland residents what SB is to LI girls.

Not one girl at my daughter's school has ever wanted to play for Maryland. If they get their pick of college lacrosse opportunities they always go High Academic - Ivies, Duke, NW or Notre Dame - people in MD need to get out of their bubble. Cathy Reese is a great coach and the girls on the team seem like excellent kids, so good luck to them.

What about Stanford? Hopkins? Both higher than Duke and NW

Did you just compare Stony Brook University to The University of Maryland? Please get a grip on reality, there is no comparison. As for taking the call from CR, there are maybe 15 girls on The Island that the Maryland coach would consider calling.

What a bunch of BS.

"Not one girl at my daughters school has ever wanted to play for Maryland" more nonsense...

"If they get their pick of college lacrosse opportunities they always go High Academic - Ivies, Duke, NW, Notre Dame"..... Yeah, okay.

Not even sure where to begin... Lets start with this: only Princeton and Penn can be mentioned in the same breath as Northwestern, Notre Dame and Duke when we are talking lacrosse. Any given year there are maybe 5 - 9 girls total from Long Island that commit to Northwestern, Notre Dame, Duke, Princeton or Penn. I'm sure they are not all from your daughters school. The odds are that your daughters school might produce Zero players most years that are offered opportunities at the schools mentioned, maybe 1 or 2 on a good year. So, where do they all go? Very doubtful that Maryland would even offer a spot to 1 girl if any in a given year from your daughters school.

Trying to diminish The University of Maryland and or the Terrapin Lacrosse Program simply makes you look foolish.

I think some people are going to have a wake up call on September 1st. Do you hear yourselves, Do you think that it is easy to get an offer from Stanford, Hopkins, Penn, Princeton, Duke, Northwestern or Notre Dame. Transfer portal and the extra year of eligibility have made it even less likely. These schools bring in on average 8-9 players per year (most of those schools will now be replacing at least 1 incoming freshman with a Transfer), how many do they average each year from Long Island? I hope that your daughters have excellent grades and are considered to be one of the Top players on The Island because I doubt we will see more than 10 players from the Long Island Class of 23 commit to the schools listed above. They are all great schools with excellent lacrosse programs but the reality is that the majority of players will not be receiving offers from Programs / Schools of this caliber. There is a lot of opportunity for the girls, I would not be so quick to turn your nose up.

BTW, I was not trying to knock Stony Brook, I just do not believe that there is a lot to compare between the two Universities.

LOL... curious to hear what MD residents think. We are from the south and would probably consider Stony Brook the better academic option for the sciences and health

Why are you so mad? Pretty sure my daughter will get some very strong offers from top academic and top 20 lax schools. MD is not a top Choice. Average academic school who’s lax has declined. Just not the kind of school my daughter is interested in. You should be happy, more spots for your daughter! Would be a third tier for us, like a safety school.

Not mad at all, just calling your BS out. Maryland is certainly one of the top 2 or 3 lacrosse programs in the country and it is far above average with respect to academics. For some reason you want to bash Maryland, I'm not sure why but I will bet that the Maryland Coaching staff feels the same way about your daughter as you and your daughter feel about their university and their lacrosse program.

You seem pretty sure about all of the offers that will be coming your daughters way, for her sake I hope you are right. However, I have been around a long time and have been through the process multiple times and I have seen many delusional parents have a tough time when those offers from the top programs / universities do not come.

Will your daughter be ranked by IL in the Top 20 or 30 for her class? Will she earn a spot in the UA Senior AA game next year? If she is that caliber of player that is terrific and I am sure she will be able to choose to go wherever she wants. If she is not that caliber don't expect any offers from Top 10 - 20 programs anytime soon, those schools typically don't make offers to second tier players until all of the top players have committed.

For the most part, the best players will choose to go to Boston College, UNC, Maryland, Duke, Princeton, Syracuse, Florida, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Duke, Penn State, Stanford, USC, JMU, and maybe a few others (Stony Brook gets some top LI talent ). Certainly not all equal academically but all are excellent schools and the majority of the top players tend to find a home at one of them.

You remind of the type of people who say my daughter choose academics first, she went D III.

To each her own, not sure why people want to put people , programs or schools down.

LOL! Not putting any program down. Just saying it’s not the right fit for my daughter. She’s not majoring in lacrosse, even though she could if she wanted too. Luckily some girls have options. This is no accident. It’s due to sacrifice and hard work. Good luck to all!

15 national titles, I think it’s fair to say the best players have indeed picked MD over and over again. And look, MD isn’t on my kids radar either. She’s not good enough to play there. She might end up at a school held in higher academic esteem but only because there are so many factors at play and there are plenty of schools looking for players of her caliber.

To the MD naysayer, good luck in the process. Sounds like your kid will have far more opportunities than anyone I’ve ever heard of. I don’t mean that facetiously, I just don’t know anyone else in the lacrosse community who has had that type of interest. I’m glad there are kids out there still getting those kinds of looks and with that kind of all around appeal to be garnering that kind of attention. We all have to support our kids in their own process.

If they get their pick of college lacrosse opportunities they always go High Academic - Ivies, Duke, NW or Notre Dame - people in MD need to get out of their bubble. Cathy Reese is a great coach and the girls on the team seem like excellent kids, so good luck to them.

You absolutely put the program and the school down. Sorry to tell you that if Maryland is offering a girl a spot I guarantee you that she has plenty of options.

September 1st is almost here and I assure you that many parents will be getting a big wake up call that little Suzy isn’t as good as her parents think she is. Especially with so many 5th year transfers in the portal that have been picked up. I think the 23’s are in for a rude awakening!!

There is no denying MD is the most successful women’s lax program, period. The decline someone mentioned is more likely just a dip in 2020-21, and they will continue to compete for national championships for many years to come. But I also know that for many players who actually “can” get recruited to play there, it is not even a thought. If your daughter is a great player, it opens a great many doors to many schools. If she is a great student, it opens many more doors as well. Despite what you hear on this site, these kids still need great grades, great scores and challenging course loads to gain entrance to the highest level schools. Lacrosse certainly helps get very good students in to schools that otherwise may be out of their reach. Point is, if you want all the doors open, your daughter needs to be a great player and a great student. And while MD program is probably #1 school on the list from a pure lacrosse standpoint, it is definitely not what many are looking for academically. For some students it may be a tough school to get into through regular admission, for many, not really. Someone on here seems to want to make a point that if #1 lax school MD wants your daughter, she must want to play there. And if you think otherwise, she must not be a good enough player. I guess my point is this is not the case. Many great players, who have the doors wide open, who can play for MD if they choose, do not want to play for MD.

So, 100s of girls show up at Duke camp thinking that will get them recruited there. Duke will take about 6 girls this year. 4 of which have already been chosen. That leaves two open spots from camp..maybe. How are those odds?

I agree with the above post. Not because I am a hater or because I want people to be disappointed, simply because I have seen it all before. There are parents who complain about every tryout, every "list", every All-Star team etc... These are the parents that blame everything under the sun when other players are recognized ahead other daughter. These same parents will now complain about the recruiting process, they will blame politics, their club director, their HS coach and everything else as to why their daughter is not committing right away to a "top program/school". They will make excuses and attempt to tear down the players who do commit to the top programs/schools in the first moth or so. We have heard it before and we will hear it again "she will never see the field", "that's a real head scratcher", "her father is connected", "we are putting academics first" etc....

I love when I hear things like "Maryland is not on her list" as if she is on Marylands list....

These are the same type of people who will then try to spin whatever their daughter does as "the best" possible choice/decision all the while knocking the choices made by others. Newsflash, trying to tear down others in an effort to elevate yourself/your daughter and or her choice is not a good look.

I have heard it in person and I have read it on this site... when a girl commits to Maryland, UNC, Syracuse etc... it's "she will major in lacrosse" or "she will never see the field", "my daughter does not want to be a lacrosse coach"...

September first is when parents and players find out just where they stand in relation to other players. The top players will receive multiple offers from some of the top college programs. There are many great schools that have women's lacrosse, but the reality is that the majority of the top players receive offers from and choose to attend one of those top programs.

Two older kids found great fits both at great schools with great lacrosse programs. One was considered a "top recruit" and had multiple offers from top 5 caliber programs as well as top 10 academic schools, the other was not that caliber but is at what I consider to be a great school (not Ivy, Stanford, Duke, ND, NU etc...) but a great school none the less. One (the one who was a top recruit) has started / played in every game on a Top 10 caliber team, the other has yet to see the field at a Top 20 caliber team. One was able to commit early the other had to go through the process (and it was long and at times stressful) but it all worked out. Both are very happy with where they are at.

I wish everyone well but... to the haters who knock players, schools, programs, coaches, clubs etc... to those who cry politics every time their daughter is not recognized we will see on September 1st and in the weeks to come how players stack up.

There will be surprises that go both ways.

I agree with most of what you say, except "Someone on here seems to want to make a point that if #1 lax school MD wants your daughter, she must want to play there. And if you think otherwise, she must not be a good enough player."

I don't think that is the case, at least not for me. I just do not like when people bash or put down players, schools , programs etc...

I will say that if a girl is a top tier recruit at a school like MD she can choose to go to many other "great" academic schools if she chooses even if she doesn't have incredible grades.

Maryland is an excellent school with a great lacrosse program.

To each her own, find the "best fit".

I just don't think there is this diaspora of wlax players out there who turned down UMD offer. I am not suggesting that your kid wasn't good enough to play there, but I think they have it locked and loaded before Sept 1 even hits. It's 4 maybe 5 girls committing. It's an incredibly small group of kids. I don't think an offer exists for someone who would call the school a third tier safety. The program is in the position not to have to entertain people who deem it as such.

Lol, MD is not what it once was. They will have to fight hard for the top girls that reside outside MD. I can tell you that none of the top girls from LI/NJ/Conn, and PA have MD as their top choice. I’m hearing BC, NW,ND, UNC, Stanford, Penn, Princeton are the most sought after. I know this from talking to parents at various events. However MD will get some of the better girls from Skywalkers, M&D, and Heros since there tuition is already sliced in half.

Those schools are always the most sought after… I would add Duke, USC (for those looking to go to the west coast) Syracuse, Florida Penn State and of course Maryland…. It doesn’t matter where a kid is from those schools seem to get the top talent year after year. BTW, where have the Majority of Maryland’s best players come from in the past? Bottom line is the top tier players get to choose where they want to go to school, some will obviously choose Maryland. The large majority of players will not receive offers from any of the schools listed above, that’s just reality. I’m guessing for this class the total number of commits to those schools will be 70 - 80 total, out of what? 800 plus commits?
The Maryland bashing is comical, great school, great program.

I have to say, it appears to me that some on this site think that players/parents just get to pick where they will go to school. Very few players will be able to choose one of these top programs/schools (if your daughter is one of them congratulations). There are lots of other great opportunities for the majority of players to try to find a home no need to knock any of them. My guess is that only about 20 - 25 Long Island players will be going to one of those schools with maybe half that number going to the top tier academic schools on the list. I’m sure there will be some parents who are pleasantly surprised by the opportunities presented to their but I am also sure that there will be a lot of parents surprised when no offers come from the schools listed.

Both comments above couldn't be more true! As a parent who has also been through it 2x (with a daughter and a son), I feel like I have a decent handle on what will happen for my younger 2023 daughter come Sept 1st. However, having been through it twice before, I also know there will be many surprises. There always are (good and bad). This year also has the residual effects of covid. For those parents and players getting ready to go through it the first time, all I have to say is be open to ALL options! Both of my older kids ended up at schools that weren't originally on "their list" and not because they weren't good programs or schools, but because most kids consider the same list of schools. My older kids are very good players. Both had made the UA AA underclass teams a couple of years. Both played varsity for high schools in top lacrosse conferences and played for clubs with very good reputations. But it was still a process that was stressful at times and much longer than both my kids hoped. However, they ended up at schools that were the perfect match for them. If they had received immediate offers without investigating other schools, I don't know that it would've worked out as well overall for them. My son ended up at a mid-D1 program and my daughter at a Top-D2 program (she did receive D1 offers but not at schools she was interested in otherwise). Both with very good academics and a team culture and coach fit that is perfect for them. Both in areas of the country they wanted to attend school in. And both that offered the majors they were interested in. They love playing lacrosse again which wasn't the case at the end of their high school years. EVERY kid will have their own personal process and it isn't anyone's place to judge their process or their results. I know several excellent youth lacrosse players who chose to play club in college in the end. And I also know many top youth players who committed to play in college but ended up quitting lacrosse midway through their college years. Good luck to everyone's player and parents as you start the recruiting process in a couple of days!

As a parent who is about to go through it for the first time and not knowing what to expect, I appreciate you sharing your experience, thoughts and advice. I always hear, most kids end up where they belong. So, hoping that is the case for all the wonderful, awesome LI girl Lacrosse players! Good Luck All

Do we expect any college coaches to show up in person at this Inside Lacrosse Elite Eight Midnight Madness event tonight?

Be patient and try not to get too upset if the phone isn't buzzing too much on 9/1. The elite players will go quickly and then the others will take weeks and months. Every kid's journey will be different. Be open, be respectful to all programs. Do not believe most of what the other parents tell you after 9/1 - they are most likely exaggerating or flat out lying.
