Friend’s and family couldn’t do the job. Shocking. Long Island gets the #9 seed - embarrassing!

Waste of time. Top kids went on vacation or to the beach.

Funny thing is if you took all the ex igloo players they would be the best in the age group.

For my older ones we hired someone for some of the tournaments . Just about the entire team chipped in so it was fairly cheap. Most showcases/ tournaments have film available to buy. It on the expensive side. They have a team option to buy at most tournaments Which runs about $600.00. - 800.00 per tournament. If your team is willing to chip this is a good option

It's really hard to make a quality highlight film using a personal camcorder if you are at ground level. The video companies use an apparatus that takes video from 12+ feet above the ground. Gives much better depth of field perspective and avoids any potential visual obstructions. There is usually a video company that contracts with the tournament (or showcase) to provide the video footage for every game.

It’s funny. This summer a bunch on the team bought into the video package offered and 2 of them were like a 5 year old was holding the camera. Cheapest way is to buy as a group. If you do film on you own try and get a vantage point and shake it. I’ve gotten plenty on my iPhone. Just do it the right way. As far as the tape itself yes there are companies that do it. I’m actually screwing around with iMovie on the Mac seeing if I can do that myself. A bit of a pain in the rear. We’ll see if I just give up and pay. I’m stubborn.

No college coach is looking at a 2024 kid. Your son will look much better next year and the year after on film. Hopefully by then everything will be in person for recruiting.

My son is on a top tier 2024 team. Not one word from the coaches or organization on recruiting. Not one. What should we expect? You would think for 4k a year there would be some direction. There is none. At the very least, what should be happening

Nothing, build your sons film for next spring/summer. And then there is two types of showcases, ones that everybody gets in, and be selective on those and the ones that require the club to get you an invite. Keep in mind the club can’t send all 20 kids to those elite showcases, so it can get awkward.

This fall they should do tournaments where there are college coaches. Typically your high school does more than your club, but ask them questions. Remember don't be an butt, they are the ones you want to make calls for your son.

They should at least be addressing the topic and setting expectations. But very few do this. 2024's should have a blueprint at this stage. No college coaches looking yet but you should know key upcoming dates and events, and what it takes to participate.

Having been through this before...do NOT rely on the club for much. The top player (or two) at each position will get all the looks to the big showcases (maverik, nike, juniors, 5 star). Everyone else and everything else you need to do on your own. Do your research, make a plan. Research prospect days, make a video, etc

You obviously don’t have a son on a top team or you would know there are 3-4 players on pack taz and express that were on igloo at one point.

Yup. Half the Igloo team left because of the coaching. One coach is great guy, one complete donk, and one Dad. The owner refused to change so the better players left.

Keep dreaming of “what could of been’ Wake up call. All but one of those players are role players on those teams, and some are less than that, so calm down. There is no “could have been”. They were what they were. An above average team that couldn’t win a big game simply because they weren’t good enough. Especially the offense. No weapons. No coach was ever going to change that.

you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. The kids that left that team from 3rd grade on would form the best team on LI.

Do yourself a favor. Talk to your son about different schools that will be a good fit for him, then go from there. In my opinion, placing lax before everything else is a mistake.

Not to sure of your point but there are about 30 kids on Express the latter 10 don't step on the field unless they are up big. You could say that for the bottom 5 on Pack and Taz. Those kids would be better off playing for Express B, igloo, True blue etc. they may get a little more run.

Most parents would rather their son hold their stick like a shepherd on the sideline and get a nonsense tshirt than have them play on the organizations second team. Because field time is just as good as practice lmao.

Honest recruiting/club question: My son has been on his clubs top team for years and is being actively recruited. Not by the best D1 schools in the country but D1 schools he can probably get into academically and probably play for at some point. However hes got friends on the second team who are getting D1 looks as well. What was all the chaos, stress, and money going towards if he could have played 1 tournament less per summer and fall, maybe miss a showcase or two and still get recruited by similar schools for?

I believe in getting game time experience, but what are people's thoughts on a situation when your son is on a second team but the other kids are not nearly as good and it affects situations like moving the ball around, etc.?

No college coach is actively recruiting your son or his friends if they are 2024’s. They are not allowed to speak with them until September of their junior year. Which would be 101/2 months from now.

Maybe he is just sharing his experience as a 23 Dad? Letting the 24s know to not go overboard?

You are correct, not actively recruiting. But my son was at The Show 2024 showcase last weekend and the coaches were hawking some of the abundance of talent that was there.

Heard Taz lost to Express this weekend and best dime no-name team. Any truth to that?

Yes it was a good game. Close to the real end with express winning 5-3. Both teams for the most part had their full rosters.

Anyone other than Igloo at the, Not So Elite 80 Showcase ? I heard that attendance was so poor there were some 2025's there. Maybe they are of age but sounds pretty bad, not cheap either

Know a 24 that drove up from PA. Talent level not great but interaction with the college coaches was very good.

I drove 15 minutes and was disappointed think about how they felt. I agree the coaching and interaction was nice but the talent level was not elite. We really had no choice and had to attend but wouldn't recommend it if you're an outsider.

Interaction doesn't get a kid recruited, and the $700+ fee is a total joke for AA to charge. he's a slime.

Are there services out there that help with recruiting? Our travel team offers little to none....actually none. I get 4 or 5 emails a week from websites offering to help build an online profile to connect with college coaches....not sure where my name is out there for that. My son does play on an A team, and does well, but his high school doesnt have many kids that commit. Really just a confusing muddled landscape. Even a link to a good article on how to get started? To be honest, he will probably be D3 and I am very happy with that. We are in this for the friendships that develop, the rest is a bonus. Thanks.

There are a lot of recruiting services out there. My older kids use Connect lax. Check Wacky lax website. They have a page dedicated to Prospect days and showcases. They are some real good D3 showcases out there. Start making highlight film. and target the schools that your son is interested in. Hit their prospect days and get him registered for individual showcases that his target schools are at. Good Luck.

The recruiting websites are possibly good for getting looks from lower D1s, mid-lower D3s and D2s but not from the upper teams at all as those are usually through connections. ConnectLax, sports recruits, NCSA and captainU are some of the services with first two likely being the most used. If you don’t have connections, this is probably better pathway for the middle of the road players. If he is an above average player at his position unfortunately your best bet is to go through connections through your club team or high school contacts which maybe doesn’t sound like it’s a great option for you. If that is the case you are going to have to do all your own leg work such as going to prospect days, showcases and creating your own videos and emailing coaches on your own. Unfortunately without connections that pathway may prove to be difficult. Having connections or being the top player at the position is the easiest way to get recruited. Caveat: everything is on a bell curve as most players fall into these categories but there are obviously a few outliers every year who succeed despite not falling into these categories. Disclaimer: This is just an opinion

The NLF is representative of all the top organizations which may or may not represent all of the top teams at any given grade level. In a general sense, it’s common sense to assume that most of the top organizations will have the top teams at every level. However, there can be and are outliers. But it is also common sense to assume that they are very few and far between. At the 2024 level I can think of only one team that is not in the NLF and that would be the Legacy Taz team. Legacy is a small and overall not all that successful organization, outside of a couple of teams. Therefore, it’s not NLF-worthy, based on their level of standard. But is definitely a top10 team in the grade. If you think there is another outlier, please name it and we’ll see if anyone agrees with you. I’ve been around these top teams for 9 years, and I can’t think of any others.

Their better kids are popping up on other teams. "Football injuries" is a common excuse on every team. They just use it to shut the team down. Maybe let the kids that dont get to play that much have some run. They have never been the same since deserting that tournament in Mass. Sore losers, great life lesson.

The obsession with the pack continues. You’d think after all these years, the fascination would fade a little. Apparently not. Comes with the territory, when you’re the unanimous #1 ranked team in the country and national champion. Same ole same ole here. They say jealousy is the most sincere form of flattery. Thank you!

First let’s see the list of teams that are in NLF, around for 9 years and still don’t know how it works. FACT is TAZ was invited fist year of NLF because there where not enough teams and Won the whole thing and where never invited back. But appreciate the Kudos. There are plenty of other tournaments and associations other then NLF, it’s just one of many. Game has grown exponentially through out the country. WP will win NLF this year I agree with that.. good luck.

Nlf has seen its best days. Definitely on decline. They keep some very good teams out and some Nlf clubs are on decline. Especially 91, they are losing it on island. NAL no better, legacy only has like 2 good ages and they are involved. Legacy teams keep getting beat up. Both will lose good clubs next couple years as they all will realize that 91 and legacy just not good.

Congrats. Another troll saying the best teams and organizations are the worst teams and organizations. So original! Absolutely densest TROLL post of the year. Not huge fan of 91, but there is no denying they are the juggernaut of boys club lacrosse. Ask the boys which tournaments they want to win each summer and Naptown (Taz won,) NLF (Wolfpack won) and NAL (Madlax won) will consistently be the top 3. All the top clubs will be at at least one of those, if not all 3. Adrenaline, Pinnacle, NXT are all a level below those 3.
Dont worry fella just because youre not getting invited doesnt make you a bad parent……..its the mindless trolling and stupidity that is taking care of that for you.

Correct. 2nd or 3rd tier organization. They’ve had a couple of good teams, but in general a substandard organization to be sure. TZ good guy and coach, but MT is a total cancer.

Lol. Same ole same ole. This guy has to be a Jets fan. Holding out hope for the future. Time to give up the ghost. The Jets are never going to see another super bowl and Legacy will never be legit. Prob be swallowed up by 91 like the rest of the no-name clubs.

Look at the track record of all the clubs on Long Island. I know why I have my son play club lacrosse, why do you? Player development, high level coaching, ability to play in elite events, a family atmosphere and most importantly a staff that college coaches trust.

In terms of players finding a home at the next level over the past few years. Legacy has done a pretty darn good job. Yes, 91 and express have placed a ton of players at elite schools. Those two programs have 3-4 teams at an age. I don’t think legacy is being ‘swallowed’ up any time soon.

No? Remember Havoc? Remember Havoc Dune Dogs? Remember Riptide? Probably not, but those substandard organizations are the previous failed attempts of current day Legacy. Five years from now, you won’t remember “Legacy” either, unless the name changes to Team 91-Legacy.

Legacy has been around for as long as my kid has been in travel lax. They have two teams at most grade levels, a successful girls' program, a box program, and tournaments. They're not going anywhere.

Sure I’ll explain, I was talking to my son the other day who is a senior and one of the top players on the island and asked him which club he liked playing for the best and he said the Outlaws! We used to post this saying when we did well at tourneys and it would drive the nutty parents crazy! And it still works!

I don’t think it drives people crazy. Nobody what you were talking about. Obviously your son is in the small percentage minority. If lots of people said that the company would still be in business.

Congrats. Another troll saying the best teams and organizations are the worst teams and organizations. So original! Absolutely densest TROLL post of the year. Not huge fan of 91, but there is no denying they are the juggernaut of boys club lacrosse. Not Arguable unless you are the owner of a competing club, trying to justify your existence, or you are a BOTC troll with absolutely no life. Seriously. Get a life.

At this point its just about getting in front of the college scouts. Every tourney you mentioned has scouts at them for the recruiting year. Yes its nice to win (and the finale gets all the scouts) but winning the tourneys is not he be al end all.

Tough schedule?????. They played 2 teams in the top 10 rankings and lost both games. I am sure we will hear from the bay port dad that his kid is hurt and that’s why they lost and he is still a “World Series champion”
Rankings WP number 1 is a joke. Taz is by far and away the best team on LI

Also you have to love how they send the team to FL but bring in a kid from PA instead of playing the boys who have been there for years. Great job promoting your kids in front of college coaches. Disgrace. Pack it up and go home

Always something with this group. The Pack day 1 schedule is as cup cake as it gets. And the overall schedule is tough enough it warrants flying to Florida……and 91 makes the schedule. Benefit of owning the event. Maybe its simply this team is an average top team with above average ridiculous parents. Taz would run the off the field.

In fairness to the pack who was missing players as had the tougher schedule . . Taz schedule was the weaker one sub par at best . Still think Taz is the better over all team .

So now Primetime and Westchester are hold back teams too? Laxachussets def but boy the excuses and arrogance are why people don’t like you all. Taz wins and acts like they’ve done it before. Face it. #1 in excuses, #2 on LI. Kids were good when ahead on puberty but now they can’t beat the team that went 1-4 and then say it’s because schedule was tough and they’re holdbacks. Why play? Great look for the Pack. Losers!!!!!!

Taz did not even play anyone ranked, is why WP had the tougher schedule and were missing key players still No excuse when you think you are Number 1. As far as Express cant comment on that . Have heard they been in the mix as of late

Maybe but keep in mind Taz doesnt come on every message board and talk about how great they are and how much better they are than everyone else. Also, they beat the teams in front of them or lose and move on. They dont leave tournaments or make excuses like they were missing players. Wolfpack may have good lacrosse players but the org lacks the things that are important in life.
Primetime 1-4 and that constitutes the schedule being hard?

Other than they didnt have all their players, the schedule was hard and weather was unpredictable are we adding faceoffs to the reasons for losing?

Honestly? Who cares ? The boys all get along. We have three of the best teams in the country here on the island ( Taz, 🐺, Express )… all of them are littered with future division 1 players. There’s a ton of other good teams out there as well… Next Level, Crabs, Mad Dog West, True Ill Premier, Eclipse… these boys will be future teammates. Sit back, relax and enjoy the next year and a half… bc I’m not goes by quicker than you think and you’ll miss all the time you got to spend with your sons.

Well said 👍🥍💪

The top showcases are the most fun when these kids get to play together. I always stand there on the sidelines wondering who the meatheads from these boards are and thinking it must lax them off that their son has to get an assist or perfect clear or man/ball from a player on a team he hates!!!

Exactly…trust the process and stop obsessing on who is the best. I laugh at claims like undefeated streaks or self proclaimed labels like “best club team ever”… just have fun and enjoy it with your child.

The CB Laxers showcase was really bad last year! They put the kids in a indoor facility with terrible turf(a lot of kids got hurt), bad lighting and poor rotation and coaching. The poor Goalies got killed, all the field kids were just getting the ball and driving on the goal!

All schools have a recruiting form on the athletic page of their website. Fill out the form and attach highlight film. Then follow with an email. Your son should be sending the email. In the email list all showcases he will be attending this summer Remember the coaches can not contact your son in to 9/1 so this does not have to be done right now it can wait til the spring. Most coaches are concentrating on their season now.

Not sure where you would get that he is the best in grade. He hasn't played against the top kids in his grade yet. Making all star in Fla where there wasn't even a FO kid on every team doesn't count buddy. Either does WSYL. He doesn't even have a current highlight video.

Nice try. Simple IG check and being half informed of 24 kids will get you that info. But if he is the best in grade, he is famous anyway, right Dad?

Coaches names are on the list and then they don't show up. Coaches are standing around not evaluating kids. Coaches get paid and they need the income to supplement their salary, therefore these big showcases are not great recruiting events.

Would have to agree with this. Juniors Open, Showtime and Main Stage are the best place to get looks. Coaches will spend most time watching the 24's during club season.

I don’t know about that. Went last year and the Duke coach spoke with all the kids via zoom a few days before. Daynof TPS he spoke with all the parents. Stood next to the Yale and Brown coach during one of the games. The coach of my kids team was the North Carolina offensive coordinator. Yes they are all money grabs but to say coaches are not involved is completely false for TPS. Maybe for other showcases though.

Just play well for your club, the sidelines will be full of coaches. Attend the prospect days of the schools you really like, other schools attend those prospect days as well. My son committed to Holy Cross after being seen at the Yale prospect day.

How did that work? Was a Holy Cross coach there as well?

Everyone is making money on this. IMLCA ran a tournament this winter (or at least sold their brand for it). There is a lot of money kicking around the system and everyone wants to get in on it. It does not mean your son does not get evaluated. The #1 thing you can do to get recruited is be a really good lacrosse player.

This is true but not the norm. From my experience most prospect days are just a single school. Yes, the sidelines are full of coaches for the top teams but if your kid is not on one of the top tier teams, there will not be a lot of coaches watching. In this case Individual showcases are important for some.
The coaches are paid to be there. Be honest with sons ability and try to place him the right showcases.. One of my kids attended a showcase that had D1, D2 and D3 coaches. the talent level at the showcase was very good but was not elite. the D1 coaches were active in the beginning during the drills period. once the games started they could have cared less They knew only a handful of those kids had what it took to play D1. The D2 and D3 coaches were very involved and checking their roster sheets. My point is it was a great showcase for most but the small handful of kids that had elite talent it was a waste. The coaches want to see your kid compete against elite talent for D1. D2 and D3 want to see your kid compete against talent that is equal to that level. I'm not trying to put down D2 and D3 (one of my kids plays D3) but the talent level between a top D1 school and say Suny Farmingdale or Suny Cortland is a huge difference

Yes, Holy Cross was there. Also in attendance, was Sacred Heart, Fairfield, Conn. College, Wesleyan and few others. I would say that in most of the prospect days that I have attended(Michigan being the exception) there have been other schools in attendance. Yale did not view any of these schools as a threat to their recruiting.

How about the Jim Stagnitta Showcase? Spotlight Lax....it seems he has a good amount of the higher end colleges going to it, I am assuming because he knows the older guys a little bit better.

The Show 2024 is actually pretty loaded, well the Fall was. I am assuming the Summer will be too because its run by MADLAX.

One of the kids on our 23 team went last summer. He said there were a lot a of coaches there both heads and assistants, and if they saw a player they liked they def created dialogue with that player. He committed to a D1 school that was not at this showcase though.

Rumor is there are a lot of kids signed up for this already. Its also the 1st Showcase of the Summer so it should be loaded with college staff as they will be in full scouting mode.

As someone who just went through this and has a son (2023) committed to the Patriot League I have to say Juniors started everything for my son because it was the first and so well run. It was the first event that I ever attended where only one game at a time was being played and EVERY D1 coach was there and basically all HEAD COACHES not assistants to the assistants. They were all watching one game at a time and I thought that was huge. Also bc it was first the coaches were excited to watch HS lacrosse and they were all socializing with each other. This waned as the summer went on and you can see and feel it on the sidelines. After a few weeks the coaches want to get home and are less interested and start to move from field to field - again something that Juniors didn't have. My son went to Main Stage/Five Star/One Percent/Lax Nationals as well. Did not go to Showtime bc it was the day after Juniors. I could see that after Juniors there were some coaches that were watching my son at different events bc of Juniors. They would specifically come to some of his tourney games (not showcases) and this was aided by letters to the coaches telling the coach what events my son was going to. He sent all the letters and gave details as to fields etc... Didn't really feel Five Star or One Percent moved the needle at all and not one coach reached out saying they saw him at that event but they did for Main Stag/Juniors and Lax Nationals. I don't know anything about The Show or Exposure (new events?). The one thing I will say is that at one of the events Gerry Byrne (coach at Harvard) spoke and he along with a cpl of other coaches said that their favorite events are the ones that the boys play with their high school teams (NHSLS/GEICO etc . . ) and that they value those above all others. They said it was the best lacrosse and that there was less ball hogging and hero ball and much better lacrosse to watch. Hope this helps for what its worth.

The Problem with Juniors Open this year is that The Great 8 (or I guess the Great 10 now since 10 teams are playing this year for 2024) are on the same dates. It is also right before Showtime. If coaches want to see players at a team tourney, there is no better tourney than the Great 8. It was the most loaded tourney with coaches that my son played at last year.

With the top 10 teams in the country playing at Great 8, there is no need to go to Jrs.

Disagree. Juniors is the best showcase out there. Best players and how it’s run. MainStage ok and showtime watered down. For team stuff they still have NAL, NLF, Crabfeast and Naptown and some other big ones and they can see all the top teams and there are no major showcases going on during those dates.

We were at great 8 and in terms of coaches showing up and watching it doesn’t compare to juniors. Great 8 had multiple games at the same time so not all coaches watching one field and bc not all great players (yes all good teams) the depth is no. I will say great 8 was an excellent event but at no time were 70 so coaches watching one game. Also in terms of loaded tourneys Naptown was better attended. Lastly the NHSLS had more coaches as well. Was at all of the above events. Again, great 8 is a very good event but not elite yet.

Boys Recruiting Thoughts and Help for the Masses

I posted this in the “Boys High School Lacrosse” forum but I am posting this in the 23’s, 24’s, 25s. since they will be affected most by recruiting just to try and generate more conversation as I am curious to other's thoughts

I apologize ahead of time as this is a VERY VERY long post so I left a TL;DR summary at the top. There are also likely errors in this so I welcome any corrections. I also suspect these thoughts may hold true for the girl’s game but I don’t know anything about girl’s recruiting. Yes, I have too much time on my hands now the kids have moved on.

I am posting this as anonymous – I’m not notIntelligent (haha). This may generate a lot of thoughts, positive or negative but the point is to get a discussion going because I find there is very little actual recruiting help on these forums. I am sure many of the replies will be “bitter parent” “Ok Rebel Parent” or “team91 parent” or “Stunad” or “legacy dad” or “your kid graduated, why are you still on these forums you creeper”, etc. This is just one person’s opinion as someone who has gone through it (kid was a middie, on-age who ended up in a good D3 school) but had some D1 looks / offers so maybe this can be used to help others (or maybe I’m a coach……..). If you feel the need to comment, try to post something constructive. If you don’t like the post; scroll on by.

You may agree with 0%, 50% or 90% of it. It is important to note that these are just generalizations on a Bell Curve; there are always exceptions to the rules: there are some who got recruited way above their pay class and there also talented people who fell far in recruitment. This should apply to most but there are definitely outliers where people have forged their own paths. Tell us your stories!

For those whom this is TL;DR

1) Talent and connections trump everything, which leads into…
2) … being realistic about your kid’s ability as many parents cannot be “objective”
3) Be cognizant of how much you are projecting your own hopes and dreams onto your kid – don’t be that parent.
4) Some of you feel like you are running on a “Hamster Wheel” when it comes to recruiting. Find out what “Hamster Wheel” you want to be on – don’t be afraid to change wheels midstream
5) Have “fun” – but to be perfectly honest, if you are at the level where you are hoping to be recruited, I am not going to sit here and say having fun is the only thing that matters because that is BS. That being said, having fun is still important whether it be lacrosse, long road trips with your kids, having a meal with them, visiting colleges – all are fun.
6) Whatever college or trade school you kid ends up in, it will be perfectly OK in the end
7) Don’t believe what everyone tells you (including me). What may have worked for someone else may not work for you as I can guarantee you kid is so very different from everyone else.
8) Lacrosse is finite – don’t make short term decisions with long term consequences. It is Ok to sacrifice saying “my kid got into a low D1 school with poor academics” just for the sake of being D1. It will be better in the long run to apply to a better academic D1 school that has club, the MCLA’s or better academic D3 schools

Soooo, moving on these are the factors that I think of importance (from most to least) to get recruited:

1) Talent – trumps all – if your kid is already a superstar, most of this does not apply to you. If he/she don’t have as much talent, try to be realistic about their high level D1 / D3 dreams. Be very realistic about how your own child grades out. You may think they are superstar but if they haven’t competed on the national stage where the competition is the best, you cannot really know how good your kid is, even if everyone tells you they are the best. Be as objective as possible; rate your kid on a 100 point scale. Most players who are 93+ have a decent chance at a high D1/D3 school. Anything below that, it is going to be more difficult to get into the top schools and don’t punch way above you kid’s weight class when it comes to recruiting as it will lead to disappointment. However, there really is a lock for every key and if your kid really wants to play lacrosse, there are 400+ schools out there to play at. If you don’t have connections or talent, you will have to market the garbage out of yourself – go to showcases, prospect days, make good videos, email (the appropriate amount), sign up for recruiting services. But honestly, most of those all have minimal impact unless you have the connections but it’s all you got at that point.
2) Connections (High / Prep School or Club) – my kid went to several prospect days for schools as well as sent several emails to schools and he never heard a peep from any of them until a coach reached out on his behalf. I truly believe that this is the most important beyond talent. Coaches at all levels are getting hundreds of videos and thousands of email. They simply do not have the time to review them all or even open them. Having a coach call or email, allows you to jump to the top of the food chain (think Chutes and Ladders).
3) Grades – how could I leave this out in the original post! If you don’t have the grades, you aren’t getting into an elite school. Sports will help somewhat but you do have to have some sort of baseline decent grades.
4) Your kid’s High School prestige – there is line somewhere that separates the elite schools for lacrosse from the run-of-the-mill lacrosse high schools. If you are below that line, unless there is an individual connection, your chances of an elite D1/D3 school are slim to none without that connection. That being said, your high school play is still very important for recruiting for the other D1/D2/D3 schools because it is your high school coach that knows you best.
5) Your kid’s Club – same facts hold true as it does (#3) high school. I often get asked what club team should I chose. Do not balk at driving distance as a barrier. Sometimes you will have to drive far to get to a better club. To be honest, I would choose the best, highest ranked club because they play in the best tournaments (NAL, NLF, Crabfeast and Naptown, Great8) and try and get on their A squad at as young an age as possible. That way the club knows your child over time and will go to bat for you eventually. In addition, if you don’t make the top team, it gives you a chance to: work your way up to the A team or look for another club that may suit you better. That brings up the topic of A vs B. In reality, most B teams are not sending players to top D1/D3 schools (some are but that is not the norm). If being at a top lax school is not your goal then A vs B doesn’t matter as much because plenty of B players play college lacrosse. My kid was on a team that did not think much about his game. He was at a small local club and so he made the jump to a national club. He started on their C team and worked his way up to started on the top team so it is possible. Finally, understand these clubs are in the MONEY MAKING business as most are for-profit. They will sell you a bridge to nowhere as long as they get your tuition checks. Here is how I break them down:
a. Some are outright frauds. They don’t care and they just want your money
b. Some put together some half -hearted attempts at recruiting – they go through the motions but are not really making phone calls on your kids behalf
c. Others really only promote their best players. These are also fraudulent as they put all their time and effort into marketing their best players only, while the rest remain tution check to support those best players.
d. Finally, there are some truly excellent programs who will do their best to place a kid anywhere whether it be the best D1 program to the worst D3 program.
e. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention National teams and National tournaments – on paper, it is a very good idea but part of me says there is a money grab aspect. You can even see multiple clubs joining together to make national team (eg CLCA). I think it is the next evolution and I would not be surprised if National tournaments become the norm with local tournaments still existing but becoming second fiddle.
Coaches will tell you they will help you with recruiting but the reality is they do not want to put their name out there to back you if there is a lacrosse:talent mismatch. So if your Johnny rates as an 80, don’t ask your coach to get you into Syracuse because they won’t do it. It is a shame that some clubs promise you the world but don’t help you even though are paying $2000-4000 for your club; for them to not help you is just fraudulent. How to tell if a club is real or not? Look at their website. A good one would post a list of ALL their commits, not just the ones who get into top D1 schools which usually means they had a favorite player. Look at their social media. Are all of their posts only about 1-5 of their top kids? Finally, word of mouth – talk to the older kids and kids who have moved through the program; not the superstars but the average ones who had college lax dreams.
6) Prospect Days – this is the best way to get in front of a school on an individual basis. However, many of these are pure money grabs. We have been to several where no one was filming, coaches had no paper or they were not writing anything down. Clearly no evaluation was going on. It does allow you to get in front of the coaches and look at the campus. But I am somewhat cynical because if you were not already on their radar, a coach didn’t send you, or you were not invited, it is unlikely to be helpful.
7) Showcases- There are so many showcases out there. Many of them are money grabs and really garbage showcases. How do you know what is a good showcase? I wish I knew the answer to that but I can say that if the showcase has a good list of head coaches then it is going to be pretty good. If the communication is pretty good, then that is also a good sign. I will throw it out there and say good ones are Showtime, The Players Series, Spotlight, ECD, Lacrosse Masters, Main Stage, NXT Fall, The Show, Juniors Open, Main Stage. Then there are the average showcases (3D, adrenaline, my lacrosse tournaments, Elite 100, Elite 180, GFW, Q4, Victory, Maryland Showcase). UA and National All Star Games are very good but very political. 1%, FiveStar and Apex are very heavily marketed but have found them to be more glitz than substance. What is important to know is nobody is going to be “discovered” at most of these so do not think your kid is going to show up and “kill it” and get recruited by Duke. Coaches usually have a list of players they are there to see and if the kid does well, then they reach out. Finally, no one cares about wins and losses at showcase so don’t be that parent.
8) Recruiting video – coaches are getting hundreds of video so they may never even open your video or emails. That being said, video is still 100% necessary in this day and age of recruiting. If they do open it, you want your intro to be brief and you want to front load your 5-star highlights. Some say don’t use music; my feeling is they can always mute it. Try to film your own video even though it is a pain in the arse. Much of the paid tournament videos offered are expensive and very poor quality. It is a pain in the butt to film your own highlight video but you will have a much higher quality video that is zoomed in appropriately. Iphone and imovie work perfectly fine or invest in a cheap HD camcorder. Some of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen: inappropriate offensive music, not zooming in on your child, including highlights that aren’t highlights, not highlighting /circling your player in the video (you know your kid so it’s easy to pick out for you but most coaches, it’s pretty hard to pick up to the player in that 4 second clip). Some say, don’t make it longer than 2 minutes; my feeling is most coaches aren’t watching past 1 minute (if they open it) and if you give a 6 minute highlight video they can always just shut it off.
9) Position – kids are specializing more and more (SSDM, FOGO, LSM and goalies). If you are really good at your position, you stand a very good chance. If you are mediocre, you better show that you can do other things. At the Prospect Days, I have noticed more and more defenders and less middies which stinks for defense, that stinks because I think that is also the hardest position to get recruited at. Goalies always fill first so get in early. If you are not looking high level, none of this is as important
10) Recruiting profiles (NCSA, SportsRecruit, ConnectLax, CaptainU) – these are likely only helpful for the mid-lower Tier D1, D2, D3 schools. The top schools will not or do not use these services – they do everything through connections.

Additional comments, myths and facts?

1. I am assuming that most people “try to punch up” with their recruiting (ie they will try and overachieve with their lacrosse ambitions) so be patient, be realistic and don’t be disappointed. There is a “lock for every key” as there are over 400 lacrosse colleges. If you really want to play lacrosse, you will find a school.
2. Re-class – there is so much detest on this forum about re-classed players. Unfortunately, it is here to stay until colleges and clubs change their mind (USA Lacrosse has zero ability or desire to change this). Colleges and clubs don’t want to change because they want the most mature and physically gifted players so they could care less that your kid is on-age. Some kids re-class for legit reasons (maturity, academics). But some also re-class to try and get into a better school. IMHO, re-classing is destroying the sport but it’s here to stay. It is completely unfair but totally within the rules. Why on earth would someone re-class for lacrosse reasons only is beyond me. I can’t imagine how dominant my kid would have been if he was going against kids 1 -3 years younger.
3. Lacrosse players are not getting a full scholarship: Full scholarships are uncommon and most will only get a very small amount of money
4. Lacrosse is finite: I think lacrosse carries on forever whether it be a playing in beer league, coaching, raising your own kid, etc. But in terms of a career, very few people go on to make a living out of playing lacrosse. Lacrosse has a finite end and for some it ends after high school; some after college. Don’t make short term decision with long term consequences
5. Commit vs Preferred-Walk-on vs Walk-on – I know very little about this. All I can say is that if you are a preferred walk-on you are on the team but you don’t always travel. If you tryout and walk-on (not preferred), there are generally very little chances or spots at the high collegiate level but probably plenty at the lower caliber schools
6. Prep vs Private vs Catholic – depends what part of the country you live. Not all preps are lacrosse powerhouses nor are all catholic schools. There are a few public schools that carry a lot of weight but chances are your high school does not; you will know
7. PG – from what I have been told, do not PG unless it is arranged ahead of time with a college who specifically said you should PG. There are plenty of PG’s who PG but do so without a college talking to them. There are even PG schools out there. They still eventually get into lacrosse schools but it usually is not a step up to playing for Duke / Virginia / Syracuse / Yale etc. That being said, some need to PG for academic and maturity reasons.
8. How often should I email a coach – I believe coaches are getting hundreds of emails. Chances are, they are not going to read or even open your email (at least at the high D1 or high D3 level). That being said – maybe once a month and always have some sort of update whether it being lacrosse or academic.
9. Don’t be that lacrosse dad or mom. Honestly, be quiet. Don’t coach your son on the field. Don’t yell “wheels” “ward” “offsides” and ride the refs. Coaches do actually notice this. They don’t care so much at the collegiate level because they can limit the parent’s sphere of influence but somewhere in the back of their mind, they are wondering if the apple doesn’t fall from the tree when they are recruiting. No one cares that you were once a superstar or failed athlete. Everyone can see you are projecting who you once were or wanted to be onto your child
10. The Grass is Not Always Greener (See Clubs above) – it’s OK to be a club hopper – we jumped clubs and it worked out for the better but it doesn’t always. Just make sure you are doing it because there are faults with the club and not faults with you or your kid. Most parents cannot tell the difference sadly. If you do go club hopping, make sure you latch on to one before high school because making the change after high school is very difficult
11. The New England region and Long Island used to be center of the lacrosse universe. That is no longer the case. I believe it is currently the MidAtlantic (re-class) but areas such as the South (Fl, GA, TX), Midwest (Il, MI) and West (CA, CO) are producing amazing players along with New England and LI still being very good
12. D1 vs D2 vs D3
a. D1 – I think a lot of kids can play D1 as there are some D1 schools that are not as competitive out there and would be happy to take all sorts of talent. The only thing I would advise is don’t go D1 for the sake of going D1. D1 is also a full time job so they have to juggle academics with their lacrosse.
b. D2 – they do offer scholarships. Some are great schools and great lacrosse programs but academically I have found they are not as good as some of the D1 and D3 schools
c. D3 – I do not believe they offer sport scholarships but will offer other scholarships. Even though D1 is a full time job, D3 is also very busy especially in the spring. The main difference is the 20 hours in the fall that D1 has that D3 does not but D3 still practices in the fall. D3 probably has the largest cohort of schools from incredibly competitive to very mediocre.
d. MCLA – do not overlook these schools. Some are top academic institutions (Stanford, Rice, GaTech, etc)
e. Club lacrosse – also do not overlook this. Totally OK.

Timeline – don’t get sad if all your friends commit on 9/1 of their junior year. D3 doesn’t make offers until later and sometimes D1 makes commitments as late as December of your senior year. Patience, young grasshopper.
1) D1 - You cannot be contacted by anyone for recruiting until September 1 of your junior year. That being said, they can reach out to you with camps and prospect days but not personally. Now obviously kids who verbally commit on 9/1 must have had some contacts with the colleges but most of it is through high school / clubs
2) D2 – June 15 after the sophomore year
3) D3 – I believe they can talk at any time but some of the NESCACs adopt D1 rules. D3 offers do not go out until June (or July?) 1 after their junior year

Choosing a school: it will be a multitude of factors but this is what I think plays into it (in no order)

1) Academics – imho, don’t sacrifice this for lacrosse, but that being said, you will probably be fine at any school depending on what you make out of it
2) D1 vs D2 vs D3 – similar to above – don’t get caught up on the D1 Hamster Wheel – plenty of good options out there
3) Starter vs bench – some kids just want to be part of a process; some need to be the superstar. Find out where your kid is and if you are realistic, it may open doors and don’t shoot for the stars, it may open up a lot of schools.
4) Conference they play in and level of competition
5) Money – it matters. There are some very rich people on these forums who don’t realize that. That being said, most are not getting full sports scholarships.
6) Coaches and their coaching philosophy – this has to be the right fit
7) Lacrosse is finite – don’t choose a school because of a lacrosse

Well I am sure I left a lot out. Let the detest begin (haha). But seriously, try and help out your fellow lax members with something constructive. Everyone enjoy the ride though. It was great for me, my wife and all our kids.

With the top 10 teams in the country playing at Great 8, there is no need to go to Jrs.

So there are usually at least 4 coaches for every college team. They basically only send one to each event, sometimes two. So lets say Penn State. They can be at 4 different tournaments at once. The big post the dude just put up is really accurate. Just get to some and play and find your fit. Colleges will be at all of them.

Problem with juniors open is it starts on a friday - when kids have classes still. Every kid wants to be in Best in Class - unsure what the exposure is really like though.

Agreed, Best in Class has been hands down the best event my son attended. Deemer Class got everything right with that showcase.

Son went to best in class and its a good event and maybe will grow but in terms of coaches present it doesn't compare to the others. There were a good 30 plus coaches there but thats it.

Anyone have feedback about the Nike Long Island All Star Team tryouts? How political is it ( if at all )? Do any kids who don’t play for LIE or Legacy ever get picked?

Very political. TZ and JA will load their team with taz and 91 players with some that belong and others definitely not. Will have a couple of express kids sprinkled in and that’s it. Same with under armor. TZ has his hands in everything for this grade and can’t blame him but he looks out for his own kids for sure, no doubt.

This is a moot point, if you don’t have an invite already to Juniors you are not getting one.

Juniors could be well run but it is a scam to charge an evaluation fee and never receive any feedback or acknowledgement. They should at least say thank you for the inquiry. Dirty business run by some very dirty people. Juniors raising the bar on the db side.

Been through it all with 2 boys. 3rd one is up. Playing the summer season with their team is the best exposure to have in their recruiting year...Showcases are a waste of time and $. It draws only the kids that don't pass the ball and play the game the wrong way. Coached see this very clearly. How do I know? My middle boy was that kid in the 2021 class, and it almost ruined his chances. Switched gears and it worked out for him by playing with his own team. Do as you wish but I've been there twice

Very insightful. Thanks. I feel like showcases can get you noticed but FOGOS and Goalies benefit the most from them.

I had a completely different experience with showcases, My 2022 got recruited because of a individual showcase. The one thing I learned is that everyone has a different experience. No 2 paths are the same. All the showcases listed above are good if the schools you are targeting are at them. We identified 10 schools that fit our son academically, socially, and were good fits for Lax. Then he filled out the recruiting questionnaire on those schools websites. He then followed up with emails and film. Finally we hit 2 showcases that had most of the schools on his list. This worked for him, it may not work for everyone.

Both takes are helpful....the problem my sons club is having is that basically every player only plays about a half a game each game so we are doing some showcases to just get on the field a little more.... thanks guys for the insight.

Complete money grabs

Why do you feel that these are money grabs. Any info would help. Thanks in advance

If your son is a high classroom kid consider Lacrosse Masters. The coaches there are head coaches from top academic schools and they coach the kids - don’t just watch with clipboards. They really get a sense if a kid is Coachable and fits their style. Not invite only like the big name events but great access to the coaches and exposure for the kids that can play.

The show in fall had top 75 players in the class but coach turnout was horrible - 2 coaches per team no other coaches evaluating - none of the coaches were head coaches.
Showtime - godfather of showcases
Black card s horrible - NXT is better
FiveStar - like the show had best players in the class hands down. Everyone invited was supposed to be there - no scrubs
Never heard of exposure
One percent is always good - NLF and NAL heavy event. It is during NAPTOWN this year I’d be a little worried who would not show because of that.

Juniors Open and MainStage should be on this lis
Best in class should be too.

The Show was basically a first year event and it was in the Fall. It is the first showcase of the summer and should have coaches there.
Showtime will have all the colleges there without question.
Blackcard is okay, but low turnout.
NXT will have coaches.
Five Star and Best in Class have the top of the top and every kid there will be recruited 1st wave on September 1st...invite only...these are the high profile kids each club director markets and wants to be able to say they committed early in September to a top 20 college. There are 600 other roster spots in D1 lax...go for them if your not Top Gun.
One Percent is usually good but Naptown will have a lot of college coaches there.
And I agree, Juniors Open, MainStage should be on here as well as Jim Stagnitta's thing and the Iron 44 Combine.

Hope it helps.

Your assessment of the above showcases is very good but you didn't mention that it is extremely difficult to get invited to them unless your son is an absolute stud in which case it will not matter. For the other 95% you should consider Future Phenoms which is hands down the best "non invite only" showcase as it has hands on coaching and a sideline full of coaches when they are not directly coaching a team. Lacrosse Masters is also very good. My experience, having two kids go through the process is that tournaments with the club team are the best (assuming good tournaments) as nobody trusts a player more than they guys he has been playing. Then comes multi-day showcases as it is difficult for players to be selfish if they are going to be around other players for more than a few games. Then comes individual college prospect days as that is the best way for a specific coach to see you but make sure your club coaches tell them you will be there. Good luck to all of you.

I think the issue with Five Star over the summer is it lands on the same day as the LI showdown so all the top LI teams will be there. Zummo does a good job getting college coaches to attend his event.

We attended Future Phenoms last summer and while its a camp it had solid talent , some top D1, mid D1, low D1, D2 and D3 type players, not great talent but plenty of coaches and my son did get to know some of them fairly well. More face to face and not just play 3 games and go home. Also no AS game so no politics.

I surprised more 2024 teams didn’t go get run today at NYLA. So many coaches were there. Why not just go play three games locally.

That is not true. Yes, more coaches watched the 2023s, but plenty of coaches watched the 2024s. And if high level 2024s played, my guess is there would be a lot watching that. And my point is, why would teams from LI not just go play three games.

Not a tourney. It’s a showcase. They don’t keep score. And there were over 100 coaches there, including many D1 schools. So no, you can’t do this anytime. And the point was.. why not attend? Especially since many of this group is going to realize how hard it is to commit with the growth of the game and 5th year guys taking roster spots.. It was a great opportunity to get a look.

The event was always a good event pre Covid. Great mix of coaches from D1- D2- D3. The event was canceled 2 years ago because of Covid. Last year they had to move the event to later in July it was also mid week. They did not get a lot of D1 coaches last year. I think that with the surplus of showcases that now exist. Teams skipped it.

Interesting, Explains the B or C level teams attending with kids not getting in to traditional showcases. Theres a home for everyone.
