HURRICANE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT

ITEMS TO BRING TO A SHELTER INCLUDE A FIRST AID KIT... MEDICINES AND PRESCRIPTIONS... BABY FOOD AND DIAPERS... GAMES AND BOOKS... TOILETRIES... A BATTERY POWERED RADIO... A CELL PHONE... FLASHLIGHTS WITH EXTRA BATTERIES... A BLANKET OR SLEEPING BAG FOR EACH PERSON... PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION... COPIES OF KEY PAPERS SUCH AS INSURANCE POLICIES... AVAILABLE CASH AND CREDIT CARDS. REMEMBER... PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN MOST PUBLIC SHELTERS... SO CHECK AHEAD WITH YOUR INTENDED SHELTER.

REGARDING YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS... COVER ALL WINDOWS AND DOORS WITH SHUTTERS OR PLYWOOD. MOVE PATIO FURNITURE AND OTHER LOOSE OBJECTS INDOORS. BRACE ALL EXTERIOR DOORS... INCLUDING GARAGE DOORS. DO THIS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

PROBABILITY OF TROPICAL STORM/HURRICANE CONDITIONS... THE CHANCE FOR HURRICANE CONDITIONS AT THIS TIME IS LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO 8 PERCENT. ALSO... THE CHANCE FOR TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS AT THIS TIME IS UP TO 65 PERCENT. THE ONSET OF TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD START AS EARLY AS SATURDAY NIGHT... WITH HURRICANE CONDITIONS POSSIBLE BY SUNDAY MORNING.

WINDS... AS HURRICANE IRENE MOVES CLOSER... THE THREAT FOR SUSTAINED HIGH WINDS IS LIKELY TO INCREASE. THE LATEST FORECAST IS FOR STRONG TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS FROM SUNDAY MORNING TO EARLY SUNDAY EVENING... AND POSSIBLE HURRICANE FORCE WINDS ON SUNDAY. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE CURRENTLY FORECAST TO BEGIN AFFECTING THE AREA SATURDAY NIGHT. A GENERAL CONCERN SHOULD BE FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF AT LEAST DAMAGING WINDS SOMEWHERE WITHIN THE AREA.

STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE... IT IS STILL TOO EARLY TO DETERMINE THE EXACT HEIGHTS OF COMBINED STORM SURGE AND TIDE WATERS FOR SPECIFIC LOCATIONS WITHIN THE FORECAST AREA TO BE CAUSED BY HURRICANE IRENE. MUCH DEPENDS ON THE PRECISE SIZE... INTENSITY AND TRACK OF THE SYSTEM AS IT APPROACHES THE COAST. BASED ON THE FORECAST TRACK OF IRENE THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR SEVERAL FEET OF SURGE... PARTICULARLY IN WESTERN LONG ISLAND SOUND... NEW [lacrosse] HARBOR... LONG ISLAND SOUND... AND THE SOUTH SHORE BACK BAYS OF LONG ISLAND AND NEW [lacrosse] CITY. THESE TIDAL CONDITIONS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY LARGE... DESTRUCTIVE... AND LIFE THREATENING WAVES.

INLAND FLOODING... A FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE AREA. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 6 TO 12 INCHES WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED. SEE THE LATEST FORECAST FOR LATEST INFORMATION. LISTEN FOR POSSIBLE FLOOD WARNINGS FOR YOUR LOCATION... AND BE READY TO ACT IF FLOODING RAINS OCCUR.

Mandatory evacuation in order for residents of Fire Island
(08/26/11) FIRE ISLAND – Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan is issuing a mandatory evacuation order for the residents of Fire Island effective as of 3 p.m. today in preparation for Hurricane Irene.

Officials say the storm is currently tracking directly over Fire Island with winds expected to reach nearly 100 mph.

Once the mandatory evacuation is in effect, ferry service going to Fire Island will end, with vessels focusing on bringing people back throughout Friday night and into Saturday.

Officials say ferry operations are expected to shut down in both directions sometime after 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Brookhaven Supervisor Mark Lesko have also issued joint mandatory evacuation orders for Fire Island effective at 3 pm.

August 26, 2011, 10PM - Hurricane Irene continues to move up the east coast and the National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for Long Island. This means hurricane force winds are expected within the next 48 hours.

There is a high potential for extensive damage and power outages. High winds and drenching rain are forecasted to begin on Saturday and continue throughout Sunday.

LIPA is closely monitoring weather conditions and making every preparation to respond to our customers’ needs. This includes supplementing our own crews with additional personnel from both on and off Long Island.

If you should lose power, please report it to LIPA by either calling 1-800-490-0075 or going to our online Storm Center.

If you see any downed wire, do not touch it or go near it – assume any downed wire is a live electric wire – and report it immediately to LIPA at 1-800-490-0075.

From the Garden State Parkway and NJ Transit : As mandated by the governor, the Garden State Parkway is closed southbound at Exit 98. All southbound entrances to the highway are blocked off preventing vehicles from entering.

Webcams along the highway, viewable at http://www.511nj.org cameras show an erie empty roadway southbound. Only a smattering of traffic is heading northbound on the Garden State Parkway as shown in a review of the webcams.

The National Weather Center predicted that rain would start about 8 a.m. and almost to the minute, roadways started to appear wet with the promised rain.

NJ Transit Rail, Bus, Light Rail and Access Link services will be suspended beginning noon Saturday and all day Sunday. Buses and trains that begin the route prior to noon Saturday will continue to the destination.

Hurricane Irene knocked out power to about 420,000 customers in North Carolina and Virginia as the storm came ashore today.

The hardest-hit areas appeared to be near the border between the two states, including Norfolk and Williamsburg, Virginia, and Wilmington, North Carolina.

The damage so far is not as bad as expected, said Julia Milstead, a spokeswoman for Progress Energy Inc. (PGN) Progress reported about 250,000 customers had lost power in North Carolina. Crews already were beginning repairs in some areas between rain bands, Milstead said.

“We feel like we’re in a pretty good spot right now compared to what everybody here and across the country anticipated yesterday,” she said.

Dominion Resources Inc. reported about 167,000 customers without power in North Carolina and Virginia as of about 11:30 a.m. local time. The company has 2,300 line workers standing by for repairs across North Carolina, Karl Neddenien, a spokesman said.

Irene’s winds are expected to linger over the state for the next 24 hours.

“We’re not done yet,” Neddenien said.

Progress has about 1,000 line and tree workers staged across its service area in the Carolinas prepared to tackle outages, three times the normal number, Milstead said.

Some road closures are beginning while evacuations are underway as Hurricane Irene is hours away from approaching Long Island.

Route 878 and the Atlantic Beach Bridge connecting Long Beach island with Long Island is exclusively being used for northbound traffic only as of 6 a.m. Once wind speeds reach 55 mph Saturday night, the road will be closed completely, according to Nassau County police.

In the Town of Southampton, Dune Road was closed to at 10 a.m.

Major bridges off Long Island have suspended tolls while parts of New [lacrosse] City are evacuated. They include the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial, Memorial Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial, Verrazano-Narrows, Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges.

Those bridges and others will be closed once winds reach more than 60 mph, officials said.
