Guess again. See my post above about a 13 goal differential. I see this thread as not being club-team based, because <ahem> it is the 2013 HS Varsity thread. Stop trying to stir up that seemingly endless TG vs. YJ crap over here.

Lets talk Girls high school lacrosse. We have some great games this week. Let's focus on teams and players that helped their teams win big games. That is all that matters. It doesnt matter if it's on the offensive side of the ball or the defensive side of the ball. Save the YJ or TG trash talking for another post. High School season is short, lets enjoy it. what are the big games this week in Suffolk and Nassau? I know Northport is playing Hauppauge at 6pm tonight which could be competitive. Bay shore is playing Middle Country which could be interesting but I heard Bay Shore now has everyone back from injury. Ward Melville? East Islip? West Islip? They are your contenders in Division 1. How about Division 2? I hear people talking about Lindenhurst but they haven't played the big guns yet.

Bad job by both coach and director. As far as wannabes, that is a silly statement, any player can play for either club if they "wannabe" a YJ or TG they can be either, very few, if any kids with a check get turned away.

It is obvious that this system of one or two girls doing all the scoring for the team does not work, look at the top 10 teams only one listed has a girl on the leading scorer board. I blame the coaches for this, there are plenty of talented players that can be utilized/ included in the scoring if only plays were set up and the proper time was taken to practice them. It is just easier for these coaches to just sit back and let their leading girl run wild. Another problem with this is unlike club ball you can not switch teams if you are unhappy so you have to suck it up and live with it.

One of the reasons you want to get out of intramurals and get to school ball is to get away from coaches that let a few kids dominate. You hope that the school coach does a better job of working more kids into the offense. Club ball doesnt help this either, everybody is looking out for their own stats these days

Spread the shots out is a great plan but you need multiple high skill level girls to get it done. Let's face it, for some of these players (not all cases) passing the ball away to another player who can't get the job done is not a great option. The good players will pass anyway but many teams do not have more than one or two girls who can take to goal for real. Every team has many willing to go to to goal, [lacrosse] bent, only to get a weak, ill advised, dribble of a shot off in non free space, when well defended (doubled and tripled even). Set plays with cutters and feeders is great lacrosse, but you need multiple players with crisp skills to do it, that leaves many coaches conceding to go to goal mentality. Point is, don't always blame the coach.

But woudn't the perfect time to develop those players be when there is a huge point spread? Why keep the skilled players in, racking up the points, when the win is already in the bag? Who does that benefit? Oh yeah, the player who wants to be the Newsday point leader. Isn't part of the coach's job to develop the players?

I agree. Why is that good teams like GArden City, SWR,Mt.Sinai,Farmingdale, Ward Melville etc... dont have single individuals with high point totals. Maybe they do it becayse they believe in the team concept.... What a novel idea !!!

You have combined two different things here. Someone made a point that all the top point getters were not on the top teams. The thinking would go along that the games are close, and even in a 15 to 10 loss in a winless season, a girl on the losing team can rack up the stats. Your point is certainly valid, hate to see those games where they pour it on, sorta how and where the disussion started going back to Coupaige on one side taking it on the chin and EI and Northport on the other side running the scores up.

Agreed, players and parents think unless they are getting 5+ a game its not enough. Unfortunatly lacrosse which is a beautiful game can also be a very selfish one. The landscape has never been more competitive and that is driving some bad behavier by clubs, players and coaches. Got to get mine...

How about holding Coaches accountable ? The stronger programs are strong for a few reasons. many play travel and many play longer than just the school spring season. Too many of these Coaches ( Connetquot ) don't take the time to develop players on any level. They talk about travel ball, and then back off the actual coaching during games. I witnessed the Connetquot team take a beating yesterday. Many of the school players are on various travel teams. The head coach, who has been there for years, did not coach thru the game. It was a free for all with no team play, no set plays being run and no positive actions from the coach. To maintain your coaching position shouldn't the coach have to meet any standards. Year after year of losing records with no justification is really paying for a losing season. The coach gets paid to stand on the sideline and do as little as possible. Just my opinion

I do not think that any single way is the best way, you have to go with what you have, some very successful teams in the past have ridden on the backs of their best players to win championships while others have used more of a team concept.Watching Garden City last year they relied mainly on a few players, so did west babylon not too long ago.The team concept is great when you have a full team of descent players but when you do not sometimes you need to rely more on your stronger players. If I had Shannon Smith on my team in high school I would have told her to take it to the goal until they prove they can stop you. That being said running the scores up is poor sportsmanship and should not be done, the question is how many goals up in girls lacrosse is safe ? I would say a team should never win by 15 or more and in general if you are 10 goals up its time to put the breaks on.

The idea that a person gets the job to coach because they are a teacher in the district is wrong. There are districts that the teachers have it in their contracts that they get priority for a coaching position over someone who is not a teacher in the district, this is a joke and in no way helps our girls, this should be changed. The better coach should get the job.

I would agree with 10. There is already an "indication" in the rules...the clock runs non-stop with 10 goal differential.
Seems reaonable to me.

Rocky Point for many years had the strongarm on long island to compete against the top 10 rated teams and stay in the top 10 bracket themselves throughout the season , Now they beat up on non competetive teams pound their chest that they have a great roster , and get beat up by the top 10 . The program commitment level just fell off the map and the bad decision making will eventually force another bad season outcome !

They should give the jobs to all the paid coaches and directors of the travel clubs, then they can make it mandatory to pay and play for their travel club or sit on the bench. Oh wait, that's been done.

They should give the jobs to all the paid coaches and directors of the travel clubs, then they can make it mandatory to pay and play for their travel club or sit on the bench. Oh wait, that's been done.

No, maybe just give the job to someone that has a clue on what they are doing and actually cares. Not the math teacher thats just there to collect some extra money and got the job because they have it in their contract.

The games turned out to be highly non-competitive with Bay Shore taking an 11-4 halftime lead into a 16-6 final score.

Who else aint you losing to? You havnt beaten a ranked opponent. One final question was winning 24-4 worth it?

4/26
That West Islip game is looking very important for you; called it a few weeks ago.

That Ward Melville Bay Shore game, like last year, will not mean much outside of the locker room. Who cares who is 1 or 2. But I hope both of them stay on the same track.

It's true, I just read this on newsday.com

Bay Shore takes over first place in Division I

8:23 PM By Doric Sam

Bay Shore defeated Northport 16-6 on Thursday to remain undefeated in Division I. The Marauders (7-0) jumped out to an 11-4 lead at halftime and never looked back.
“We played hard throughout the game,” Bay Shore coach Allison Pfeffer said. “Our gameplan was to jump out and take the lead so we can control the ball. Northport has a very good attack and we didn’t want them to have the ball.”
Bay Shore now takes over sole possession of first place in the division after Ward Melville lost to West Islip, 12-8.
Kyra Harney led the way, scoring four of her five goals in the first half. Kaitlyn Arnold added three goals and two assists as seven different players scored a goal for the Marauders.
“We were balanced everywhere on the field, on offense, in the midfield and on defense,” Pfeffer said. “We had been struggling to put two halves together and we were able to put a whole game together today.”
The Marauders did a great job on defense, especially in holding Courtney Fortunado to one assist as she entered the game as the tenth leading scorer on Long Island. Dylan Teitelbaum had six saves, and Pfeffer said defenders Perri Baker, Casey Taggart, Allie Dolder and Corinne Schmidt all played well.
