There have been several postings discussing the cost of LAX here on Long Island in comparison with some other sports. Two of the postings from our Back of the Net announcement thread are reproduced below.

BOTC Industries wants to encourage cost education among our readers. To that end,
  • For those families involved in both soccer and lacrosse, is LAX proving more expensive? If so, why?
  • What are the relative costs that players and parents are seeing for a full year's LAX participation?
  • Are there ideas as to how costs can be made more manageable?
BOTC Industries is interested in your perspective. Share your thoughts.

For cost comparison baselines, attached below are the cost details for the Long Island Yellow Jackets program. Notice that there is a non-refundable $50.00 tryout fee. (Can you imagine the impact of charging $50.00 per tryout in the youth soccer domain?) Notice that for a $600.00 annual fee, only ten practice sessions are included for an average cost per player of $60.00 per session. (Think about that cost relative to soccer training at $150.00 per session spread over fifteen team players.)

Tryout Fee: $50.00 (non-refundable)

Yellow Jackets Membership Cost: $600.00 per year

Membership Fees Cover the following:
  • quality coaching designed to improve individual & team skills
  • 10 Club practice sessions
  • performance training
  • Uniforms: 1st year players: Pinnie/shorts, Team warm up jacket, Shoe bag, ($90.00 fee for Custom Uniform is additional)
  • use of coaching staff as college references
  • Celebration banquet
  • Website
  • Cost of fields & equipment
  • Club Salaries & expenses
  • Team membership for elite tournaments
  • The opportunity to participate in tournament play throughout the year
Tournament Fees: are separate and vary per tournament. Tournament Fees are the responsibility of the player & their family. Travel, Meals & Accomodation expenses are the responsibility of the player and their families.

Tournament Fee Covers:
  • Individual Registration in tournament
  • Coaches hotel accomodations & expenses
  • Coaches per diem salary
  • Tournament administrative costs
You can be sure that BOTC Industries is going to be doing research into all of these areas across Long Island. What do the bill paying parents feel about the value being received? What other options are you pursuing?

Is our reporting accurate? What fees are you currently paying for club services and how much more are the extras? Share your data points with our LAX community.

These fees are grossly too high. Parents are suckers, plain and simple. Here is an area where not having a league kills the kids and the parents. This is Long Island, pretty much the epicenter of lacrosse. If there were leagues to play in there would be plenty pf parents who have played at the highest levels to coach and do it for free!!! A kid is paying $50 per session? Are you kidding me? A fool and his money shall part.

By the way, if you put $1,600 a year away from 6th grade to 12th with even no return you have about enough to cover a year of SUNY education or the equvalant of a 25% scholarship. That is something 90% of these kids will not achieve.

And I thought soccer parents were crazy?

There is know doubt that Lacrosse is more expensive overall then Soccer. But lets put everything in perspective. PAL runs a very good league from grades 3-8 and all it cost you is the registration fee and equpment. soccer at the same grades costs registration equipment and TRAINER FEES which I really don't understand. I pay I guess about $1,000 fro Sept to May to have some guy with a English accent watch my kid dribble around cones. the problem is every soocer club (town) does the same thing so if you want your kid to play soccer thats the what you are up against

Park Lacrosse in New Hyde Park is a new travel team and their package is as follows.

Summer Membership Fee: $675.00
Fee Includes: Custom Subliminated Uniform, 8-10 practices or scrimmages, 4 Tournaments.

Park also offers 8 winter team indoor practices for $75.00 and Goalie training to our goalies for a modest fee.

Park feels that if the price can be kept at a reasonable level more players will be able to participate.
