Shannon Smith Named Speaker at US Lacrosse National Convention

Hofstra University women’s lacrosse coach to host clinic Jan. 12 in Philadelphia

US Lacrosse has named Shannon Smith, head women’s lacrosse coach at Hofstra University, a speaker at the US Lacrosse National Convention, presented by Champion. Smith will join roughly 150 of the sport’s best coaches, officials and administrators as presenters at the lacrosse world’s largest professional development event Jan. 11-13, 2013, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

Smith will host “Stick Skills” for girls’ lacrosse coaches at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 12.

“Shannon Smith is one of the most recognizable names in women’s lacrosse and one of the game’s rising coaches,” said Beth Porreca, director of special events at US Lacrosse. “She got right into coaching after her national championship playing career at Northwestern, and we’re thrilled to welcome her as a presenter at the US Lacrosse National Convention.”

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to share some tips with other coaches at the US Lacrosse National Convention,” Smith said. “Attending the convention is one of the best things coaches can do to better themselves. I’m looking forward to a great event in Philadelphia.”

Joe Spallina Named Speaker at US Lacrosse National Convention

Coach of MLL’s Long Island Lizards and Stony Brook University women to host two clinics Jan. 12 in Philadelphia

US Lacrosse has named Joe Spallina, head coach of Major League Lacrosse’s Long Island Lizards and of the Stony Brook University women’s team, a speaker at the US Lacrosse National Convention, presented by Champion. Spallina will join roughly 150 of the sport’s best coaches, officials and administrators as presenters at the lacrosse world’s largest professional development event Jan. 11-13, 2013, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

Spallina will host a clinic for boys’ lacrosse coaches entitled “Creating the Complete Player” at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 12 on the Maverik/Cascade Demo Field. He’ll follow that up with a session for girls’ lacrosse coaches entitled “Transition Offense” at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 12 on the STX Live Field.

“Joe ranks among the more talented young coaches in lacrosse with the knowledge and skills to coach in the men’s game and in the women’s game, and we’re excited to have him speak at our convention,” said Beth Porreca, director of special events at US Lacrosse. “US Lacrosse is very much focused on improving the lacrosse experience for young players by providing training and certification for coaches, and Joe will be a big part of that knowledge base at the convention. We’re looking forward to hearing his ideas and tips.”

“Helping to grow the game is a big goal of mine, and speaking at the US Lacrosse National Convention is a tremendous opportunity to do so,” Spallina said. “The convention is a great way for lacrosse coaches of all levels of play to kick off the season. It’s an honor for me to join an impressive lineup of speakers. I’m looking forward to seeing some old friends and making some new ones.”

New [lacrosse] Lizards Add Eight from Draft

With the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft in the books, the Lizards added eight new members to their squad. The Lizards walked away with some of the most notable trades of the night Friday in philadelphia, picking up David Earl and Steven Waldeck from the Hamilton Nationals, as well as Mark Matthews from the Denver Outlaws.

Earl and Waldeck were picked up in exchange for the Lizard’s fifth overall pick of the night. Last season with the Nationals, Earl tallied 27 points (18 goals, one 2-point goal, and 8 assists) and 15 ground balls in 11 games. The 2011 Notre Dame graduate was picked up by Hamilton in the third round of the 2011 Collegiate Draft. Steven Waldeck picked up 39 and 36 ground balls in the last two seasons with the Nationals, respectively. At Stony Brook University, Waldeck picked up 313 ground balls, 112 in in senior season, the third most in school history.

The Lizards second pick was scheduled to come in the fourth round at 29th overall, but the Lizards traded the Denver Outlaws the 29th pick and attackman Will Mangan in exchange for attackman Mark Matthews. In his first season in the League, Matthews played in nine games for the Outlaws, scoring 28 points with 19 goals and 9 assists.

With their first pick of the draft, at 37th overall in the fifth round, the Lizards selected Syracuse midfielder, JoJo Marasco. A coveted “22” at Syracuse, JoJo started all 17 games of both his sophomore and junior seasons, and led the Orange midfield with 31 points in 2012 (12 goals, 19 assists).

In the sixth round, the Lizards selected Hofstra face-off specialist, John Antoniades. Antoniades ranked fifth in the nation in face-off in 2011 with a .642 win percentage.

The Lizards selected Notre Dame midfielder, Steve Murphy at 53rd overall. In his three years with the Irish so far, Murphy has tallied 20 points on 15 goals and five assists in the 31 games he’s played in.

With the 56th pick, a trade from Chesapeake, the Lizards selected Hofstra defenseman, Mark Mullen. As a sophomore in 2011, Mullen played in all 16 games and tallied seven caused turnovers, including two against Johns Hopkins and Colgate.

The Lizards selected Jeff Tundo, a Stony Brook Midfield, with their final pick. The Ohio State transfer started in all 17 games as a junior in 2012. With 17 goals and 28 assists, Tundo lead the team in assists and was second on the team in points.

[lacrosse] Vermeil Delivers US Lacrosse Convention Keynote

[lacrosse] Vermeil built one of the most successful NFL coaching careers ever by developing relationships with his players that focused more on who they were as people. That made him a natural selection to deliver the keynote address at the US Lacrosse National Convention, presented by Champion, Friday night, given the lacrosse community's affinity for highlighting the long-lasting relationships that come with participation in the sport.

Vermeil shared his principles of leadership honed over a 50-year career that now includes his position as an executive in the wine industry, leading a team that bottles and sells Vermeil Wines, a long-time family tradition now enjoyed by the public.

"I always told people I don't coach football, I coach people who play football," he said. "You don't coach lacrosse, you coach people who play lacrosse."
