HEMPSTEAD, NY (Friday, December 14, 2012)- The Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse announced today that they are re-branding and changing their name to New [lacrosse] Lizards. An updated website and new logos will accompany the re-brand.

The change comes on the heels of the Lizards extending their regional footprint to include New [lacrosse] City, Westchester County, New Jersey and southern Connecticut.

"When the new ownership group took over the Lizards in May of this year, we negotiated a deal with Major League Lacrosse to expand the Lizards' exclusive territory,” said Lizards CEO Jeffrey Rudnick. “It grew from just Long Island, to now also include New [lacrosse] City, Westchester County, the state of New Jersey, and southern Connecticut. With this tremendous market the Lizards are now a part of, it made sense to change the name to the New [lacrosse] Lizards.”

In addition the New [lacrosse] Lizards plan to take some of their home games into New [lacrosse] City as well as expanding their youth camp and clinic plans.

“In the upcoming 2013 season, the Lizards will be playing two home games, for the first time, at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island in New [lacrosse] City,” Rudnick continued. “We have also just released a full winter camp and clinic schedule for all of our newly expanded market. Thus the change to New [lacrosse] Lizards seemed like a natural evolution.”

In 2013, the Lizards will continue to play most of their home games at James M. Shuart Stadium at Hofstra University on Long Island, while engaging lacrosse fans in the surrounding areas. The full 2013 Major League Lacrosse schedule is expected to be released in early January.

“With lacrosse being the fastest growing sport in the United States, we look forward to introducing the Lizards to our new markets," Rudnick concluded.

About New [lacrosse] Lizards

The New [lacrosse] Lizards of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) was founded in 2001 as one of the original six franchises. Formerly the Long Island Lizards, the team won the Steinfeld Cup in its inaugural season, 2001, as well as in 2003. The Lizards were purchased in May 2012, by a group led by Andrew Murstein of Medallion Financial Group as well as Richard Mack of AREA Property Partners. In the upcoming 2013 season, the Lizards will play five home games at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium and two home games at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island in New [lacrosse] City.
