Low-lying areas across Long Island were subject to mandatory evacuation on Sunday, as public officials reacting to the threat of Hurricane Sandy scrambled to clear areas most in danger from high storm surges and directed evacuees to newly opened county shelters.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano ordered a mandatory evacuation that took effect at 2 p.m. Sunday for flood- or storm-surge areas along the North and South shores.

The North Shore area covers residents whose property is less than 15 feet above sea level. Storm surge there is expected to be between 6 and 11 feet.

The southern zone, where the surge is predicted to be between 5 and 10 feet, includes the area south of Sunrise Highway from the Queens line to Rockville Centre and south of Merrick Road from Rockville Centre to the Nassau-Suffolk border.

All of Long Beach, Lido Beach, Atlantic Beach and Point Lookout are under the mandatory evacuation order. Route 878, the Nassau Expressway, began operating only northbound at 4 p.m.

Service on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's buses and subways, as well as the Long Island Rail Road, will be suspended at 7 p.m. Sunday, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said. Nassau Inter County Express Bus services will be suspended beginning at 7 p.m. and concluding at 9 p.m. There will be no NICE bus service on Monday.

All New [lacrosse] City public schools will be closed Monday, and the decision about whether to open schools on Tuesday will be made Monday evening, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

The New [lacrosse] Stock Exchange has announced that their trading floors will be closed on Monday. The last non-9/11 closing was in 1985 for Hurricane Gloria.

LIPA Update

Storm Update: October 29, 2012 - 2:00PM

Hurricane Sandy is impacting Long Island and conditions are expected to worsen over the next 24 hours.

We will continue to restore power to the maximum extent possible, keeping in mind that the safety of the public and our workforce is the highest priority. Due to the high sustained wind speeds and localized flooding, work on overhead lines will be delayed for long periods of time until conditions once again become safe for our crews, which based on the current weather forecast, will be Tuesday morning. Ground work restoration will continue as conditions allow.

Please prepare for the possibility of being without power for as long as 7 to 10 days. Even if your power is restored, the continuing storm and resulting damage could cause your power to go out again.

Current estimates hold that 12.5% of LIPA installation base (some 140,000 customers) are without power at the 5:00pm time.
