As a parent of an older girl, much of your daughter's progress is dictated by what she does in training outside the club, season and summer season. Be an advocate and well informed parent. Find clinics and training opportunities for her. Get her involved in speed training and strength training (If old enough). If you with club A don't be afraid of training with girls from club b in the off season. Get together in groups and get the stick in their hands. Try to help the entire team better. Better the talent around your daughter the faster she will progress. Be proactive. Use these boards for more than just bitching and complaining.

Unlikely! The funny thing is that people think being on these mediocre YJ teams are going to get them recruited! Ha

Maybe the 2023 top YJ team is mediocre, but they will benefit from the club name and will get recruited before all other teams, like all the other top YJ teams. Look at the prime classes being recruited right now, 2020 and 2021. They have more than double the recruits of all the other LI clubs combine. Over the years and every year they are the most highly recruited club in the nation, fact. If you've been in the sport for any length of time you know this, always been that way. So even if the 2023 team is only as good as the other clubs in LI, they still are at a huge advantage over the other clubs. I like the idea of chasing rainbows at other clubs, know many people who have followed that path. Has worked out for some, but most have come to recognize it is a much hard path to recruitment. Good luck whatever path you choose.

Coaches recruit on talent. Good luck with your philosophy. It's not a huge advantage when you are losing every game. The team has a been the laughing stock of the YJ organization and getting worse. Hiding on a bad team is not a good thing, and certainly not a path to recuitment!

I think that what team you are on does play a roll in recruiting at team events. It doesn't make a difference at individual prospect.
1. When a coach sees you at team event and your on a very good team those around you make you look better. If on a weak team but a great player there is only so much you can do without over extending yourself ie. Physically and mentally.

2. When you are at an individual prospect day your play is your play and you can not hide or be hidden.

One other factor is your coaches ability to pick up the phone and call college coaches on your behalf. If there are 2 players that are close in talent and a club coach who has a reputation for producing great players calls a college coach and promotes their players odds are college coaches listen to that club coach.

None of that matters if you're sitting on the bench, which is what many girls on Thorn's team do. Oh, and they are not a very good team in their age group, in case you haven't noticed.

Looking at the Lax for the Cure schedule it looks like Wright's team is in a tougher bracket than Thorn's team.

It does, because they don't want the Thorn team to be eliminated, so they throw Wright under the bus. Thorn plays Elevate level teams while Wright plays M&D Black?? Sounds like someone is hiding! Smoke and mirrors for YJ. Guess they don't want the parents to complain that they're losing all the games so they are driving interstate to play weak teams and call themselves winners. Ha!

They put YJ blue and M&D black in opposing brackets as the most likely to advance out and play each other in the finals. Or tell yourself whatever you need to feel better.

Why? It's not like they have to play the YJ Wright team they always lose to. The real A team will play M&D in pool play.

If Thorn doesn't win that bracket that would be hysterical. They are playing it "safe" They are playing clubs that aren't competitive. Everyone knows whats going on. Its ridiculous.

Big talker. Talk about Thorne, talk about YJ. You say Thorne is playing Elevate type teams while you play town teams and lose to Kobra Kai. Sounds like a competive summer for YOU. Ha !!!!

Wright girls left and went to leg they beat Thorn last summer no reason to believe anything has changed except Thorn lost players and those Wright girls are wearing a different color piney.

5'7" girl last year, now at TG and draw girl previous year, still on Wright did all the scoring in the 2 games Wright beat Thorne. Thorne lost 2 girls but gained 4 excellent players. While girls that left for leg are very good, not a factor in those wins. Along for the ride. Bye

Ok so let me get this straight, the 5"7 girl that is still on wright's team.. that single handedly beat thorns team the previous year. Is good enough to beat thorns team but not good enough to be on thorns team ? As they dropped her back down like a bad habit. Huh... gonna be fun watching this girl run all over you guys again this summer. Another ignorant post from a yj A parent who has no clue how to play the game of lacrosse!

I read this silly posts and it is so hard not to comment. it will be fun watching Wrights team play. The top girls on that team are all TEAM players. Passing and working together. That is the only difference between Thorn and Wright. No one on Wrights team is playing for themselves. There is no favoritism. That's why Wrights team has more success. Thorn and the other coach is not vested in that team at all. Its all about a couple of girls and that's it. Wrights team is getting awesome training and a true understanding of the fundamentals of the game. No drama, all the girls get to play. This is what the sport should be about. This is why some girls CHOSE not to go to Thorns team. Just so you get the facts "straight"

Are there are lax programs in between rec league and elite? looking for a program for a multi sport girl. not interested in driving to all kinds of tournaments across the u.s. daughter is very athletic and wants to improve, but not enough opportunities in games & scrimmages (middies here only pass to each other, attack & defense don't touch the ball).

There are some in-between clubs depending on your area. Blue Devils in eastern Suffolk comes to mind. Maybe FL$ in Nassau? I'm really not sure of others. Girls at all levels are horrific ball hogs unless it is beaten out of them by the coach.

They only pass to girls they know can catch and throw the ball. That only happens when they are athletic (like you say your daughter is) AND committed to putting the time in, otherwise you are wasting your time. There is a reason girls don't pass to your daughter.

Typical excuse of a ball hog parent. My daughter is the best blah blah blah. The reason they don't pass is because you and your crappy coach don't force them to.

The ball should do the work. Pass the ball if it is the right play. If the girl doesn't/can't catch it, thats on them. The girls will figure it out quickly enough that they're the weak link.

It's not a that I think my daughter is the best. The fact is she can catch throw and shoot. It didn't happen by accident. My daughter loves to pass the ball to other girls who are similar. Sadly, there are too many girls on the field that make way to many mistakes. If your daughter is wide open and nobody passes to her, it's probably because she will likely miss the pass, drop the ball, or be intercepted. It's a lot of work to gain possession of the ball, it must be valued.

No, the ball should be passed to her if it's the right play. If she drops it, it's on her. Girls are mean. She'll get the message pretty quickly that she needs to step up her game. Also, most girls this age are hypercritical of themselves so she'll know darn well it's her fault. Parents talking to the girls parents will usually add to the pressure "Oh ... it would have been great if little Suzzie had caught that pass!" Trading a short term over a better long term fix is being short sighted. A win in 6th grade means less than nothing.

"They never pass me the ball."

"The girls pass me the ball but I don't catch it."

Which statement gets you a better player in the long run? The answer is obvious. If little Suzzie gets better the whole team gets better and teams win games.

Trading a short term over a better long term fix is being short sighted. A win in 6th grade means less than nothing.

"They never pass me the ball."

"The girls pass me the ball but I don't catch it."

Which statement gets you a better player in the long run? The answer is obvious. If little Suzzie gets better the whole team gets better and teams win games.

The problem is...there are too many little Suzies who don't put the time in, and not enough girls who are skilled and consistent. That's why Maryland teams are better. The girls are much more dedicated as a whole. And I disagree that 6th-grade games don't matter. Winning games in 6th sets the tone and reveals difference makers. 8th grade comes around real fast, and that is recruiting year. Many of the better girls are also hoping to play Varsity in 8th grade, so 6th grade matters a lot!

what did the coach form South Carolina say? Kids are not different, they haven't changed, its the parents, they are teaching their kids all the wrong things. ITS ON ALL OF US, they are your kids, they are not adults and you are the parents and a 6th grader who is still your responsibility to mold/push/change your kid or not.

Original poster -- eastern suffolk is too far....any suggestions for reasonably priced nassau would be great. daughter can catch, cradle and shoot. her left side is weak though. she scores when she picks up dropped ball. she plays other sports so understand that she's not at the level of a club/year round player.

Good Lord, your string of answers are a nightmare. The OP was speaking about a PAL league, new girls aren't supposed to join because they aren't good enough for your all-star? How are girls going to learn? Michael Jordan didn't play organized basketball until 9th grade. Maybe the new girls will put in the time and become great, but the key is giving them the time. Relax, your daughter will still get recruited in 8th grade. Her "go to goal" mentality, the one you instilled in her, will get her some goals. Unfortunately, they usually don't call charges on those kids, I really wish they would.

I'm was always referring to travel, not PAL which is a waste of time. Girls/woman's lacrosse is one of the most skilled and athletic sports out there. You need to be aggressive but also smart. The best girls know when they can go to goal and score but they need to be smart about it too. Getting stripped or taking a bad shot is just as bad as a weak girl missing her pass. Keep in mind that goals need to be scored to win games. I do agree that many of the rules in girls lax favor the aggressive girl, that's just the way it is. My aim is not to be condescending just telling it the way I see it. My daughter was the girl who couldn't catch the ball a couple years ago but has worked hard to get better because she saw how the better players were playing and wanted to be like them, and not sit on the bench. If you think ithings are any different in soccer or basketball you'd be fooling yourself. It is sad in a way that youth sports have become so complicated and competive that's why the majority of kids quit by the time they hit 9th grade.

That's not true, they just practice more. Boys hold back, not girls. They may have a few moths on NY girls because of a later cut off, but that's it. Keep making excuses!
