Season Opening Loss to Boston, 15-12
BOSTON, Mass. - Led by three goals and four assists from attackman Ryan Boyle, the Boston Cannons (1-0) opened the 2011 Major League Lacrosse season with a 15-12 victory over the Long Island Lizards (0-1) in front of 9,122 fans at Harvard Stadium on Saturday night.

Boyle, who was named as the Bud Light MVP, scored two of his three goals in the second half as the Cannons broke away from a one-point lead by scoring eight goals in the second half.

After midfielder Stephen Peyser gave the Lizards a quick 2-0 advantage with a two-point goal in the first four minutes of the game, the Cannons answered by scoring four straight goals over a five-minute span to take a 4-2 lead with 4:15 remaining in the opening stanza. Boyle tallied two of his four assists during the run.

But, the Lizards answered by scoring twice in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter to even the score at 4-4 on goals by midfielder Keith Cromwell and attackman Tommy Davis.

The teams traded goals twice, including a two-point marker from Boston midfielder Brad Ross, to give the Cannons a 7-6 lead at the intermission.

The teams came out of the half-time break and exchanged goals two times before the Cannons went on a four-goal run, including a goal and an assist from Boyle, to take a 13-8 lead just over two minutes into the fourth quarter.

Midfielder Stephen Berger scored off a feed from midfielder Chris Fiore to end the Cannons' run, but Boyle countered with his third goal of the game, an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Drew Adams with 6:31 remaining.

Despite scoring three of the final four goals in the final six minutes, the Lizards were unable to take the lead as the Cannons earned the victory.

While Boyle led the Cannons with his seven-point effort, midfielder Pat Heim contributed a goal with two assists while Ross scored a two-point goal with a pair of assists. Goalkeeper Kip Turner made 21 saves as the Cannons were outshot by a 52-49 margin.

Peyser scored two goals, including a two-pointer, for the Lizards in a losing effort while attackman Tim Goettelmann added a pair of markers.

The Lizards will continue their season-opening road trip next Saturday when they travel to Rochester to face the Rattlers. Meanwhile, the Cannons will host Denver next Saturday at Harvard Stadium.

Team Warrior Wins 41-Point MLL All-Star Game
BOSTON, MA (July 9, 2011) - The Major League Lacrosse All-Stars faced each other at Harvard Stadium tonight in front of 11,186 fans for the 2011 Sports Authority MLL All-Star Game. Team Authority took on Team Warrior in one of the biggest battles of the season.

With the top 39 athletes in the league, the game was a close one with Team Warrior taking a significant lead in the third quarter. Team Authority was able to come back in the fourth within one, but Team Warrior inched past their opponents as Stephen Peyser scored the game winning goal at 12:11. The final score was 21-20.

Team Warrior was able to spread the wealth amongst their talented team with 10 different players scoring throughout the game. Denver's Brendan Mundorf and Boston's Brad Ross were able to tally four points apiece during the game. Ross scored from long range as well.

For Team Authority, Michael Kimmel was named the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game for his spectacular 9 point performance on five goals including three two-point goals. This broke the MLL All-Star record for points. Nine other players contributed to the scoreboard as well for Team Authority.

The half time Bud Light Skills Competition was full of action with the fastest shot, the freestyle contest and the all new goalie gauntlet. This year's winners were Kyle Hartzell for fastest shot with a 102 mph shot, Boston Cannons' midfielder Paul Rabil who won the freestyle competition for jumping over a blue Ford car while scoring a goal, and Denver Outlaws goalie Jesse Schwartzman who won the goalie gauntlet with an impressive 21 second time.

This year MLL chose two lucky fans through the "Ultimate MLL Fan Fantasy Contest" to become captains of the All-Star Game. Michael Hatala of Glen Cove, NY and Nathan Solomon of Alpharetta, Georgia were the lucky winners. They were able to hand pick their teams during Friday night's selection party on the field at Harvard Stadium. Solomon fronted Team Warrior with Head Coach Brendan Kelly of the Chesapeake Bayhawks, while Hatala fronted Team Authority with Head Coach Bill Daye of the Boston Cannons.

Bayhawks, Lizards, Rattlers Get One-Goal Wins
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Goalie Brian Phipps put forth his third straight strong performance in goal as the Chesapeake Bayhawks came from behind to beat the Hamilton Nationals, 12-11 in overtime, at Ron Joyce Stadium in Canada. Phipps, a rookie out of Maryland, continued to yield a hot stick by making 14 saves. He has now stopped a total of 51 shots in the past three games since taking over as the team's starting net minder.

Midfielder Steven Brooks was the hero, taking a feed from line mate Justin Smith and firing in the game-winning goal with 2:10 elapsed in the extra session as the Bayhawks captured a showdown of teams that were tied for third place in Major League Lacrosse (MLL).

"This is a huge win because it puts us in sole possession of third place and gives us the tiebreaker against Hamilton should it come down to that for the playoffs," Chesapeake owner and head coach Brendan Kelly said. "I am so proud of the entire team. We showed tremendous poise and a ton of courage tonight."

Attackman Danny Glading led the way offensively with two goals and two assists for Chesapeake (5-3), which rallied from a pair of three-goal deficits during the game. Smith finished with a goal and two assists while Brooks and attackman Ben Rubeor scored two goals apiece.

"Brian Phipps was phenomenal again tonight. He made some outstanding saves down the stretch to really give us a chance," Kelly said.

Goalie Scott Rodgers was tremendous between the pipes for Hamilton (4-4), making 19 saves to keep the score close throughout. Attackman Kevin Crowley scored three goals for the Nationals, who were outshot 57 to 31.

Rookie attackman Stephen Keogh scored two goals as host Hamilton jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. Midfielder Kyle Dixon fired in a 2-pointer to pull Chesapeake to within 5-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Nationals regained the three-goal lead, but Brooks and Rubeor closed the second period with back-to-back goals to make it 7-6 at halftime.

Chesapeake came out on fire in the third quarter, scoring two goals in the opening four minutes to take a 9-7 lead. Smith sparked the run with a goal and an assist while Phipps helped turn the tide toward the visitors by making five saves in the stanza, which ended with the Bayhawks leading 10-8.

It remained that way for the initial five minutes of the fourth quarter before Hamilton scored three goals in the span of 3 ½ minutes to regain the lead. Rookie midfielder David Earl tied the game at 10 with an unassisted goal at the 8:46 mark while Geoff Snider won the ensuing faceoff and scored just 27 seconds later to make it 11-10.

Neither team managed a goal for a stretch of nearly seven minutes before Chesapeake attackman Brian Carroll came through in the clutch. Carroll took a feed from midfielder Michael Kimmel and fired in a rocket shot that tied the score 11-11 with just 27 seconds left in regulation.

"Brian Carroll really came up huge. Time was winding down and he stepped up to make a big-time play," Kelly said. Brooks then came through in overtime to give the Bayhawks their second straight victory. Smith set up the winner by dodging and drawing a slide from the long stick midfielder defending Brooks. Smith quickly dished off to Brooks, who scored on a sidearm, left-handed crank shot.

Alex Smith won 14 of 25 face-offs for Chesapeake, which held Hamilton scoreless on three power play attempts. Long sticks Michael Evans, Steve Whittenberg, Kyle Hartzell and Barney Ehrmann anchored a defense that allowed just four goals after intermission.

The Bayhawks return home this Saturday, July 23rd to battle the Long Island Lizards at 7:00 pm. The Bayhawks will be wearing pink helmets in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Night and they will be autographed and auctioned off after the game. Proceeds will benefit Save the Coconuts Foundation. The game will be live on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.

July 16, 2011 - Hempstead, NY - The Boston Cannons (6-2) were held to just one goal in the second half to lose 12-11 to the Long Island Lizards (3-5) in the last in a four game road trip. The Cannons failed to clinch a playoff spot, still needing a win or a Lizards loss to secure a trip to Championship Weekend.

The Cannons took control from the first face-off, taking a decisive 5-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Max Quinzani, Kevin Buchanan, Pat Heim and two from Matt Poskay, who also had an assist during the run. The Lizards took over the end of the quarter with a two-point goal from Stephen Peyser and two goals from Tim Goettelmann to end the first in a 5-4 Cannons lead.

Although the Lizards struck first in the second quarter, Rabil re-started the Cannons' offense with the 20th two-point goal of his career. Poskay scored again, Brian Farrell notched his third career goal in three games and Rabil scored the 20th (one-point) goal of the season. John Grant Jr. scored behind the back to keep the Lizards alive, but the Cannons took a 10-6 lead into halftime.

Long Island controlled the scoreboard in the third, with goals from rookie Jay Card, Dan Cocchi and Peyser to bring the Lizards within one, then Card scored five minutes into the fourth quarter to tie the score at 10. The Lizards took their first lead of the night on a two-point goal from Matt Danowski and, despite an unassisted goal from Brad Ross, held on for the 12-11 win.

The Cannons return home to face the Hamilton Nationals at Harvard Stadium on Saturday, July 23 at 7:00 PM EST.

DENVER – The Denver Outlaws (5-3) could not complete a comeback late in the game, falling to the Rochester Rattlers (1-7) 9-8 at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Saturday night.

Trailing 8-5 entering the fourth quarter, the Outlaws roared back into the game with goals from Peet Poillon, Steve Holmes and Bill McGlone to knot the game at eight. However, with 2:25 left in the game, Rattlers midfielder Jordan Levine broke the tie with the eventual game-winning goal. A last-second shot by the Outlaws that would have won the game was deflected.

Rattlers attacker Ned Crotty led his team to victory with four points (2 goals, 2 assists), while Billy Bitter was the standout of the night for the Outlaws. Bitter tallied two goals on the night for his third multi-goal game of the season.

The Outlaws began the game with an early 2-0 lead, including goals from Nate Watkins and Connor Martin (1:36 and 2:48 into the first quarter, respectively), but their sticks fell silent after that as they managed just one more tally in the first half. Though the Rattlers didn't respond until the 9:05 mark with their first goal from Jordan McBride, it sparked a 3-0 run against the Outlaws, as Matt Striebel and Grant Catalino scored as well.

With 6:55 left in the second quarter, what would have been Crotty's first goal for the Rattlers was waved off due to a crease violation. Less than a minute later, the Outlaws' Bitter answered with a goal to tie the score at three. But with just a minute until halftime, Levine scored an unassisted goal to put the Rattlers in the lead, 4-3.

Immediately at the start of the third quarter, Crotty netted his first goal for the night. Three minutes later, Bitter beat out Rochester defensemen Andrew Spack and scored to end Denver's thirteen minute drought. Attacker Brendan Murdorf proceeded to tie the game at five with a short-handed goal, but the Rattlers responded with goals from Crotty and a two-point goal from Anthony Kelly.

Rattlers Victorious While Bayhawks, Cannons Fall
DENVER – The Denver Outlaws (5-4) were unable to make a comeback and defeat the Rochester Rattlers (2-7) this evening, losing 15-8 at PAETEC Park in Rochester, New [lacrosse].

Although Outlaws midfielder Max Seibald scored the first goal of the evening after three minutes of play, the Rattlers' offense responded less than a minute later with a 3-0 run. The first half continued to belong to the Rattlers as they outscored the Outlaws 9-3. Rattlers attacker Ned Crotty began his offensive surge in the first half, recording four goals.

The Outlaws relied on Drew Westervelt as their primary offensive asset, completing a hat trick in the third quarter, and finishing with four goals on the night.

The Outlaws offense received other goals from Seibald at the :44 mark of the fourth quarter, Brian Langtry at the 2:44 mark of the fourth quarter, and Brendan Mundorf at the 13:52 mark of the first quarter.

Rochester goalie John Galloway put together another impressive outing, holding the Outlaws to eight goals on 22 shots on goal (.636 pct.). The rookie out of Syracuse saved 19 shots when the two teams played at INVESCO Field at Mile High one week ago.

The Outlaws return to INVESCO Field on Saturday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m., and will face the Boston Cannons.

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Attackman Danny Glading scored two goals and dished off three assists for Chesapeake (5-4), which missed an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth on Saturday before a crowd of 7,793 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Midfielder Ben Hunt scored two goals while fellow midfielder Justin Smith contributed two assists for the Bayhawks, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Lizards goalie Drew Adams anchored a suffocating defensive effort that lifted the Long Island Lizards to a 15-8 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Adams, a third-year professional out of Penn State, made 16 saves to shut down a Chesapeake offense that came in averaging nearly 13 goals per game. Adams has been on fire of late and was just named Major League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week after making a career-high 24 saves to help Long Island upset first place Boston, which had a five-game winning streak snapped.

"It wasn't offense or defense. We play as a team. We win as a team and we lose as a team," Chesapeake owner and head coach Brendan Kelly said. "It was a team loss. We didn't play well as a team tonight – offensively, defensively and in the specialty areas."

Chesapeake wasted a dominating effort by faceoff specialist Alex Smith, who won 22 of 27 draws. Goalie Brian Phipps stood tall with 12 saves for the Bayhawks (5-4), who managed just two goals over the final 3 ½ quarters.

"We had plenty of opportunities. I'd say in the second and third quarters alone, 70 percent of our shots were from right on front of the cage. Great angles, great looks and we're not finishing them. It was the same shot every time," Kelly said.

Glading scored two goals as Chesapeake raced out to a 5-1 lead with just 7:23 elapsed in the first quarter. Smith dished off two assists during the early onslaught as the Bayhawks displayed superb ball movement and pinpoint shooting accuracy.

However, the offense went stagnant thereafter and the Bayhawks managed just three goals the rest of the way. Adams made 10 of his saves during the second and third quarters to give the Lizards a chance to come back. Berger closed the second quarter with back-to-back goals as Long Island rallied to tie the score 6-6 at halftime.

Hunt scored the opening goal of the third quarter to put Chesapeake back ahead 7-6, but the visitors totally took over from there. Grant scored both of his goals while attackman Matt Danowski had a goal and an assist to lead a decisive 9-0 run for the Lizards.

Attackman Tim Goettelmann and midfielder Stephen Peyser scored three goals apiece for Long Island (4-5), which remains in the hunt for one of four playoff berths. John Grant Jr. totaled two goals and an assist while fellow attackman Ryan Young added two goals for the Lizards, who have now won two straight.

There was some good news for Chesapeake on Saturday night as it did not lose ground to either of the teams it trails in the standings as Boston (6-3) and Denver (5-4) both lost. The Bayhawks will try to get back on track next week at home against Hamilton.

"What we tell the team is: You've got to forgot about this one, go back to work and be better," Kelly said.

The Bayhawks return home this Saturday, July 30th to battle the Hamilton Nationals at 7:00 pm. The game will be live on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.

Boston, MA - July 23, 2011: Paul Rabil scored his 100th career goal as the Boston Cannons (6-3) returned home to Harvard tonight, but it was not enough as the Hamilton Nationals (5-4) prevailed, 16-12. Unable to regain momentum in the second half after a nine-goal second quarter, the Cannons suffered their second loss in a row. Hamilton goalie Scott Rodgers earned Bud Light Player of the Game honors for his 20-save performance.

Hamilton started off hot in the first quarter, shutting out the Cannons 3-0. Brett Bucktooth scored the first two goals of the game against goalie Jordan Burke while Jeremy Boltus scored one more as the quarter ended.

After a slow start, the Cannons were busy during the second quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to start their nine-goal rally before the half. Kevin Buchanan started the scoring for Boston while Paul Rabil, Max Qunizani, Ryan Boyle and Matt Poskay all scored in order to give the Cannons their first lead on the night. Buchanan showed off his long range skills as well, scoring a 2-pointer and giving Boston an 8-5 lead. The teams traded goals for the rest of the quarter, with the Cannons taking a 9-8 lead into the half.

The Nationals began the third quarter with four goals in order to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Poskay broke Hamilton's streak with two goals in a row, bringing the Cannons back within one. However, it was not enough for Boston as Donny Moss scored to end the third quarter in favor of Hamilton, 13-11.

In a quiet fourth quarter, Buchanan was able to jump start the Cannons' offense with his third goal on the night, keeping Boston within one. But with three goals to close the game, Hamilton clinched the win.

The Cannons travel to Denver for the last time this season to face the Outlaws on July 30th at 9:00 PM EST. The Cannons' last home game is Saturday, August 13 against the Rochester Rattlers at 7:00 PM EST.

Lizards Run by Rattlers to Win Third Straight
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Celebrating his 25th birthday, midfielder Stephen Peyser tied a Major League Lacrosse single-game record by scoring three two-point goals and added an assist as the Long Island Lizards (5-5) won their third straight game, a 15-6 MLL victory over the Rochester Rattlers (2-8) at James M. Shuart Stadium on Thursday evening.

Peyser, who had not scored a two-point goal in his career prior to this year, matched his season two-point goal total by tying the MLL single-game record. He is the seventh player in MLL history to record three two-point goals in a game and the first player to accomplish the feat since Long Island attackman Matt Danowski had three two-point markers against Chicago on July 10, 2010.

Led by a pair of Danowski goals, the Lizards sprinted out to a commanding 9-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game. Peyser also had a two-point goal with an assist during the run.

With 2:11 remaining in the first half, the Rattlers ended their scoring drought when rookie attackman Grant Catalino scored on a two-point goal on a power play, trimming the deficit to 9-2.

Trailing by seven points to start the second half, the Rattlers used a pair of goals from midfielder Matt Striebel, including a two-point goal, to narrow the gap to 9-5 with 35 seconds left in the third quarter. But, Peyser used another two-point goal with four seconds left in the period to extend the Lizards' lead to 11-5.

After midfielder Stephen Berger opened the fourth quarter by scoring an unassisted goal, Danowski added his third goal of the game with 7:39 remaining, upping the Lizards' advantage to 13-5.

But, attackman Ned Crotty ended the spurt by scoring an unassisted marker with 6:28 left to cut the margin to 13-6. However, Peyser secured the victory and tied the MLL record with 3:36 remaining when he took a feed from Danowski and fired home a 20-yard shot past rookie goalkeeper John Galloway.

While Peyser led the Lizards with his seven-point effort, Danowski added a "hat trick," including a two-point goal, with an assist as Long Island outshot Rochester by a 57-38 margin. Goalkeeper Drew Adams, the two-time reigning MLL Defensive Player of the Week, made 17 saves while allowing just four goals.

Striebel led the Rattlers in a losing effort with two goals while Crotty added a goal with two assists. Galloway made a season-high 20 saves in the loss, which eliminated the Rattlers from postseason consideration.

After opening the season with a 2-5 record, the Lizards have won three straight games.

Nationals Crush Bayhawks; Cannons Clinch
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Attackman Jeremy Boltus and midfielder Joe Walters led a balanced offense with two goals and two assists apiece as the Hamilton Nationals soundly defeated the Chesapeake Bayhawks, 16-6, before an audience of 7,962 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.

We obviously didn't show up to play tonight and they did. It was a bad performance all-around," Chesapeake head coach Brendan Kelly said. "We were sloppy and they made us pay for every mistake we made tonight. We turned the ball over something like 17 times, and whenever you do that you're in trouble."

Midfielder Stephen Keogh scored three goals for Hamilton (6-4), which has won five of its last six games to move into second place in Major League Lacrosse (MLL). Midfielder Kevin Crowley contributed a goal and two assists for the Nationals, who outscored the Bayhawks 7-0 in the second quarter to take control.

"You can't go scoreless in the second quarter and expect to contend," Kelly said. "They went on a 7-0 run and we never recovered from it. We tried to regroup at halftime, but couldn't respond and they continued to bury us."

Long stick defensive midfielder Brodie Merrill was a force on both ends of the field for Hamilton – gobbling up nine ground balls, clearing the ball effectively and dishing off three assists. Merrill was named Bud Light Most Valuable Player of the Game.

"Brodie Merrill was phenomenal tonight. He was definitely the difference maker out there. He really created a lot of transition for them," Kelly said.

Goalie Scott Rodgers made 13 saves to key a superb defensive effort by the Nationals, who limited the Bayhawks to six goals on 34 shots. Chesapeake's six points were the fewest in the MLL this season.

"We were getting off good shots and they just weren't falling," said Brooks, who celebrated his 27th birthday last night. "I thought Rodgers played phenomenal tonight. He made some fantastic saves."

Midfielders David Earl and Jordan Hall both added two goals for Hamilton, which went on a decisive 9-0 run in the first half. Geoff Snider got the better of Chesapeake ace Alex Smith on face-offs – winning 15 of 26. That possession dominance enabled the visitors to unleash 42 shots on Bayhawks goalies Brian Phipps (five saves) and Chris Garrity (four saves).

Brian Carroll scored two goals while fellow attackman Danny Glading had a goal and an assist for Chesapeake (5-5), which has lost two games in a row. Midfielder Steven Brooks had a goal and assist for the Bayhawks, who suffered their most lopsided loss of the season.

Brooks and Rubeor scored back-to-back goals just over two minutes apart to give Chesapeake a 2-1 lead with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter. However, Keogh and Earl closed the opening period with consecutive goals to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead they would never relinquish. That began a decisive 9-0 run that put the visitors ahead 10-2 at halftime.

Chesapeake travels to Rochester next Saturday before concluding the regular season at home against Denver on August 13th. The Bayhawks finished the season series 2-1 against the Nationals this season and thus would win a potential tiebreaker for the playoffs.

"I'm not really worried. We have two important games ahead of us so we can't look back. We have to stay positive and finish the season strong," Kelly said. "Hopefully, we can go on the road next week and find some chemistry then finish strong against Denver."

DENVER -- The Boston Cannons defeated the Denver Outlaws 10-9 in a back-and-forth match Saturday night in front of a crowd of 7,804 at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

Despite a two-goal fourth quarter lead, the Outlaws were unable to snap their losing streak, which was extended to a franchise-record four games. It marks the second time this month that Boston was able to beat Denver, clinching the season series against the Outlaws and a playoff berth.

With the loss, the Outlaws fall to 5-5 on the season and descend to a tie for third place with the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the league standings.

Entering the fourth quarter, Denver held a thin one-goal advantage. Drew Westervelt completed his hat trick early in the quarter, whipping it past Boston goalie Jordan Burke to put the Outlaws up 8-6 with under 14 minutes to play.

Brad Ross scored a power play, two-point goal later in the quarter to tie the contest at eight. It was Boston's second power play goal of the contest.

Brendan Mundorf completed his own hat trick with 3:59 to play, giving the Outlaws a 9-8 lead.

Boston scored back-to-back goals within the next three minutes as Max Quinzani and Kevin Buchanan each scored past Outlaws goalie Jessie Schwartzman.

The Outlaws regained possession with 54 seconds in regulation, but lost possession 17 seconds later and Boston was able to run out most of the remaining time.

A penalty was called with four seconds left on the clock, but the Outlaws were unable to convert off of the quick shot situation as the clock expired.

In the third quarter, Boston jumped ahead early behinds goals from MLL-leading scorer Paul Rabil and Pat Heim, but the Outlaws erased the deficit once again when Mundorf and Billy Bitter each scored to put Denver up 5-4.

Westervelt gave the Outlaws a two-goal lead, their largest of the game, when he scored off of an assist from Terry Kimener midway through the quarter.

Rabil recorded his second unassisted goal of the quarter less than three minutes later, slipping the ball past Schwartzman to make the contest 6-5 with under five to play.

Exactly a minute later, Bitter fed Peet Poillon for an easy goal as the Outlaws went up 7-5.

Denver, CO - July 30, 2011: Bud Light Player of the Game Kevin Buchanan scored the game-winning goal with 1:06 in the game, giving the Cannons (7-3) a 10-9 victory over the Denver Outlaws (5-5), clinching a playoff berth for the ninth time in the Cannons' 11 seasons. Down 3-2 at halftime, the Cannons came from behind in Denver for the second time this season, winning the tie breaker between the teams to be the first in Major League Lacrosse to clinch a spot in Championship Weekend.

"We knew we were going to have to come in here and earn this victory," said Cannons head coach Bill Daye. "The fact that we battled all the way to the end is what I'm most proud of, and we were able to finish it and get the win. Clinching the playoffs means only that; our focus now is on facing a strong Nationals team in Hamilton next week."

The game began slowly for both offenses, with the first quarter ending in a 1-1 tie on goals from Matt Poskay for the Cannons and Terry Kimener for the Outlaws. Poskay had the first tally again in the second quarter, but the Outlaws answered twice to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.

Both offenses came alive after the break, each scoring four goals in the third quarter. Paul Rabil scored twice, Pat Heim added one and Kyle Sweeney scored a man-down goal with less than a minute to play to keep the Cannons within one going into the final 15 minutes.

Drew Westervelt and Brendan Mundorf each completed a hat trick in the fourth quarter, but those were the only two Outlaws goals to the Cannons' three, kicked off by Brad Ross' two-point goal to tie the game at eight. Max Quinzani scored before Buchanan's give-and-go with Heim cemented the victory.

The Cannons next travel to Hamilton to face the Nationals on August 6 at 7:00 PM EST. The Cannons' last home game is Saturday, August 13 against the Rochester Rattlers at 7:00 PM EST. Championship Weekend takes place August 27 & 28 at Navy Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis.

MLL : Four Teams Fight for Three Remaining Playoff Spots

With one spot spoken for and Rochester out of the running, the last regular season games are looking more like playoff games. Every team except Chesapeake can clinch their own spot in the post season, but not at the same time. And with a 3-way tie in third place, it may fall on head-to-head matchups to make a final decision about who’s in and who is out.

Boston secured their spot last week with a 10-9 decision over the Outlaws. This week, a win over the #2 Nationals would guarantee Boston the number one seed. But Hamilton needs this one too, a win for them ensures not only a position in the post-season, but puts them in first place in the league. A loss this weekend leaves them in danger of being eliminated the following week. The two have met once before, Hamilton took the contest, 16-12.

The 5-5 Bayhawks are matched up against 2-8 Rochester this week. Rochester may be playing just for pride, but this game is huge for the Bayhawks. A loss would mean they could only make playoffs with a win over the Outlaws and two consecutive Long Island losses. The Bayhawks have already beaten the Rattlers twice.

In the Outlaws-Lizards match up, either team can clinch with a win. If the Outlaws take it they will finish no worse than 6-6 on the season and their 3 wins over the Lizards would ensure them a spot. If they lose, they would need to beat the Bayhawks by two or more in the final week to earn a place in Annapolis. Should the Lizards win and Chesapeake lose to the Rattlers, the Lizards’ two wins over Chesapeake would guarantee them a spot in the playoffs. The Outlaws have already beaten the Lizards twice, but the teams haven’t met since June and additions like John Grant Jr. to the Lizards could change everything.

MLL Saturday Results; Playoff Pairings Set

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Attackman Brendan Mundorf scored five goals and dished off three assists to lead the Denver Outlaws to a convincing 15-9 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Saturday night in front of 8,517 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Mundorf, a sixth-year professional and four-time Major League Lacrosse All-Star, was the catalyst of a balanced offense that was clicking on all cylinders. The former UMBC standout was named Bud Light Most Valuable Player of the Game.

Chesapeake was without its top defenseman as two-time All-Star Mike Evans sat out with a hamstring injury. That forced the Bayhawks to move Dan Hostetler from long stick midfield to close defense, where he joined fellow first-year player Bray Malphrus – a Virginia product who made his MLL debut last weekend.

*****

BOSTON - Just 27 seconds into overtime, Boston's Brad Ross split the Rattlers' defense and found an open corner, giving the Cannons a 16-15 win in front of 8,154 at the final game of the regular season. Ross earned Bud Light Player of the Game for his 3-point performance. The Cannons move on to face the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the first semifinal game of the Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend on August 27 in Annapolis, MD.

Paul Rabil also had an excellent game offensively, clinching the Major League Lacrosse scoring title by one point over Rochester's Ned Crotty. With 50 points on the season, Rabil has 28 goals, 4 two-point goals and 18 assists in 11 regular season games. Crotty added three goals and an assist tonight for a season total of 49. Rabil was named Cannons Offensive Player of the Year by the team.

*****

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Rookie midfielder David Earl scored three goals and added an assist as the Hamilton Nationals (7-5) secured the final berth for the 2011 Sports Authority Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend with a 14-8 victory over the Long Island Lizards (5-7) at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday evening.

With the win, the Nationals will make their second playoff appearance in the last three years and will face second-seeded Denver in the second semifinal at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday, August 27 at 3:00 p.m.

Peyser Wins MLL's Most Improved Player Award

BOSTON, Mass. - Major League Lacrosse announced Friday that Long Island Lizards midfielder Stephen Peyser has been named as the 2011 Sports Authority MLL Most Improved Player of the Year, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. The award was based on the votes submitted by the head coaches and general managers of each of the League's six teams.

After scoring just 14 goals in 11 games last year, Peyser exploded for 22 goals this year and was the Lizards' second-leading scorer with 32 points. In addition, he ranked second on the team with six two-point goals after not scoring a two-point goal in his career prior to this season.

Peyser, who is in his fourth MLL season, tied a MLL single-game record on July 28 when he scored three two-point goals in the Lizards' win over Rochester. Honored as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week, he also tallied an assist for a season-high seven points.

Peyser recorded four "hat tricks" this season, including back-to-back three-goal games against Denver on June 3 and at Boston on June 11. He also collected a pair of three-goal games against Chesapeake on July 23 and against the Rattlers just five days later.

The former Johns Hopkins University midfielder has scored 72 career goals in 44 games, including six two-point goals, with 11 assists.

Drew Adams Named MLL Goalkeeper of the Year

BOSTON, Mass. - Major League Lacrosse announced Monday that Long Island Lizards goalkeeper Drew Adams has been named as the 2011 Warrior MLL Goalkeeper of the Year, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. The award was based on the votes submitted by the head coaches and general managers of each of the League's six teams.

"Warrior would like to congratulate Drew on an outstanding season," said Dave Dixon, Warrior Chief Marketing Officer. "The Warrior MLL Goalkeeper of the Year honor is evidence of a tremendous personal effort on the field and we are proud to present this award to him."

In his second season as the Lizards' starting goalkeeper, Adams ranked fourth in the MLL with an 11.75 goals against average. He also ranked third in the MLL with a .561 save percentage while leading the league in minutes played (704:44).

A graduate of Penn State University, Adams recorded 15 or more saves six times this season, including a career-high 24 saves against Boston on July 16 which earned him MLL Defensive Player of the Week honors. He also earned the MLL Defensive Player of the Week award after making 16 saves in the Lizards' July 23 win at Chesapeake.

In three MLL seasons, Adams has recorded a .543 save percentage while allowing 11.60 goals per game. He has made 325 saves in 25 career games, a 13.0 average.

"It's definitely an honor; it's a little bittersweet since we're not in the playoffs, but it's a reflection of our defense and our team as a whole," Adams said. "It's not an individual award in my eyes, you can't win it without a great team behind you, but it's definitely an honor."

Boston Cannons Capture First MLL Championship

Annapolis, Md. -- The Boston Cannons won the team's first Major League Lacrosse (MLL) championship with a 10-9 win over the Hamilton Nationals at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Anchored by Bud Light Player of the Game Jordan Burke and with seven players scoring, the Cannons became the latest Boston sports team to win a championship.

"I'm very proud of this groups," said Cannons head coach Bill Daye. "All season they worked hard and bought into our plan. 11 wins in 2011 and we're MLL champs!" Daye has been a part of the Cannons for all 11 seasons, first as a player, then assistant coach and finally head coach.

2011 Bud Light MLL Season MVP Paul Rabil, smothered by Warrior MLL Defensive Player of the Year Brodie Merrill, contributed two assists in the win. Casey Powell, who rejoined the Nationals for the end of the regular season - debuting in the August 6 defeat to the Cannons - proved he is still one of the best in the game with four goals, striking first in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Ryan Boyle opened the scoring on an early man-up opportunity for the Cannons on an assist from Rabil. Kevin Crowley answered for Hamilton, followed by a goal from Codie Jamieson to put the Nationals on top 2-1, the only lead they would have in the game. Matt Poskay scored two in row on assists from Kyle Sweeney and Boyle to give the Cannons a 3-2 edge at the end of the first quarter.

Powell scored early in the second quarter to tie the game at three, but the Cannons controlled the scoreboard for the rest of the first half, beginning with an unassisted goal from Mike Stone. Poskay completed his hat trick, set up once again by Boyle, and Rabil found Brad Ross to end the half with a 6-3 Cannons advantage.

After Powell's third goal to start the third quarter, Pat Heim got room and scored unassisted. With three penalties totaling seven minutes on Jack Reid, the Cannons played shorthanded for the end of the quarter. Matt Smalley scored his first career post-season goal on a precise feed from Boyle before Powell scored unassisted and Brett Bucktooth found Jeremy Boltus to cut the Cannons' lead to 8-6 going into the final 15 minutes.

The teams traded goals throughout the final quarter, beginning with Powell's goal from Jordan Hall. Heim scored his second unassisted goal of the night, but Merrill scored immediately off the following face off. Kevin Buchanan scored the game winner 45 seconds later, diving across the crease to beat Brett Queener. Codie Jamieson scored once more for the Nationals with 32 seconds left in the game, but it was not enough as the Cannons held the ball to complete the victory.

MLL Announces the 2012 Protected Rosters

BOSTON, MA – Major League Lacrosse (MLL) has released the protected lists for the 2012 expansion draft. Teams were permitted to protect between 10 and 12 players. Teams had several options in developing their protected lists. They were permitted to retain one goalie and 11 field players, two goalies and eight field players, or no goalies and 12 field players.

Players not protected will be up for grabs in the 2012 MLL Expansion Draft, which will take place on December 7, 2011. During the expansion draft, once a team loses three players, they can pull a player back on to their roster. For each subsequent player lost they can pull back another player. The most players a team can lose is six. Players not selected in the Expansion Draft will be eligible to return to their original teams.

Each MLL team will have the opportunity to fill their 40-man rosters in the upcoming 2012 MLL Supplemental Draft, which will be held on December 14, 2011, and the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft which will take place on January 13th, 2012.

Major League Lacrosse Executes Deal with CBS Sports Network

Article via LaxMagazine Headlines

Major League Lacrosse has added a television partner. The now eight-team league announced Monday that it has reached a television agreement with CBS Sports Network to air 14 nationally televised games in 2012, each shown live on CBS Sports Network.

MLL commissioner David Gross said in a telephone interview with Lacrosse Magazine on Monday that the deal is for one year and that MLL's TV deal with ESPN, which runs through 2016, remains in place.

"ESPN has been a great partner since 2003," Gross said. "This is just adding another strong partner."

In a statement released by the MLL, Gross said: "We are extremely excited to add CBS Sports Network as a television partner. Having 14 live nationally telecast games on the network is a tremendous step forward for the growth of MLL and for lacrosse in general.

"Our hope is that through this agreement with CBS Sports Network, MLL will expose sports fans to not only the fastest growing sport in the country, but the fastest sport on two-feet. Additionally, our loyal fans have been campaigning for more nationally televised games and we're happy to announce that our partnership with CBS Sports Network will bring the total number of live, nationally televised games to 20 in 2012."

"We are thrilled to partner with the MLL, adding to our already robust lineup of lacrosse programming," said Ross Molloy, vice president of CBS Sports Network. "Lacrosse has long been a staple on our Network and we look forward to showcasing the world's best lacrosse players while further increasing the national visibility of the sport."

In addition to the 14 games, CBSSN will also air all 18 episodes of "Inside the MLL," the league's 30-minute magazine show. The show, produced by the league, provides fans with an inside look at MLL's teams, players and coaches. Each week the show will feature special guests and provide analysis prior to each game. It will also include behind-the-scenes video.

Gross said the league will hold a contest via social media to selected the host of the show.

CBS Sports Network is seen in 44 million homes and is available to 98 million households across the country. The Network is available through local cable and video providers and nationally via satellite on DirecTV Channel 613 and DISH Network Channel 152. CBS Sports Network is also available in Canada on the following cable providers: Bell ExpressVU, Eastlink, Cogeco Cable, Rogers Cable and Bell Aliant.

Gross said conversations with CBS only began at the end of the summer and the deal came together relatively quickly.

"More and more media outlets are getting into lacrosse," Gross said. "We thought it was a really good fit."

Announcers for the package of games should be selected by January. Gross indicated that the announcers could come from CBS and/or from talent that the league has worked with before.
