The first year teams at TG seems to attract better and better players each year, it is very competitive and getting much harder to break into on black and even on purple. The club is without a doubt building a very strong base with the quality of the younger teams. The days of starting young to get a foot in the door are now gone with this club. Good luck to all the girls who made it. To all the other girls, keep working hard and have another crack at it next year and good luck to you wherever you decide to play this year.

Give me a break ,you really need a reality check. The first year kids are 8 9 10 years old ,you have no idea what type of player they will develop into.Every club is getting better kids trying out young because kids are staring earlier and the sport is growing.

My experience is you can easily spot talent at this age. Will puberty spring a few kids? yeah, will other athletic kids start later and rise straight to the top? Yes. But I have seen this with all my kids in all the sports they play and it repeats itself over and over with only a few kids as exceptions, so yes you can definitaly spot athelets and talent at this age. Most either have "it" or not. "It" canot be taught or trained, it is inside the kid. If your daughter has been playing on average as long as others her age and your waiting for her to develope into that high level standout, you very well may be dissappointed, but it does happen in a blue moon, good luck.

What a complete tool. Any parent who has any lacrosse knowledge or a descent coach can take a kid who is average athletically and make them into one of the better players in this age group.Over half the kids that make the black team will not be on that team by the time they are in 9 grade. The team a year older has kids who are more athletic and were more advanced at the same age, matter of fact the best 2020 player is on the 2019 probably because the coaches realize that younger group needs a lot of work and she would have no one of equal ability. My experience is that blow hards like you usually have no idea what they are talking about and their kids either burn out or are average at best.

So your rant all started from these points that you feel are not reality:

1) The first year teams are attracting better and better talent each year.
>I've been with the club from the start and this is very true, every year the number and talent of the girls at tryouts increases.
2) It is getting more competitive and harder to make the black team each year.
>obviously this is true, more and better girls trying out = harder to get roster spot.
3) Club is building strong base at the younger team level.
>time will tell on that, but it sure looks like it.
4) The foot in the door by starting young is disappearing.
> with more and more kids and talent showing up each year this is also easy to see.

The only thing I can come up with here is that your daughter plays for a TG team and it is not her first year and you are overly competitive and will not accept the thought that the talent coming in could possibly be better than your daughters team. Another good guess from your comments is she plays on 2019, so this reaction does not suprise me because I have read all the thoughts and comment about this team from last year. Its been clearly documented that many of the parent from this team feel this was the best team ever to be put together in the history of travel lacrosse. Even if your daughter is not on that team, the general point that has you rattled is that TG is attracting more and better talent each year, well its not a personal jab at your daughter and her team, its a blanket statement that if you took a poll from people who have been involved with the club for several years, you would find most everyone would agree.

Come on - is it really necessary to rip this team apart before they have even had a chance to play together? Many of these kids are young and this is their first time playing travel lax.

Exactly my point but you have no problem with the parent of one of the kids on the team acting as if he is the greatest talent scout ,stating most either have it or not blah blah blah, get over yourself and I feel bad for his daughter if that is what he is telling her.You should be very Leary with parents like that on your child's team probably the same moron who felt he could pick and choose the better kids to play in the Hofstra tourney.

Those are their jersey numbers.

Randomly assigned? Not that it matters

Do they not take uniform # requests from the girls? If so, that's a little strange, but a minor detail...anybody know?

Nope you get what you get

26 on the roster does not make this parent happy. It was difficult last year with a smaller team getting playing time. Big question is who will be forced to play defense, hope it's not my kid.

I was in this spot 2 years ago, with alot of girls all playing middie, my daughter played alot of defense, luckily she was able to continue to improve and has worked her way up to a top middie line. It can happen for you if you respect the process, its not easy and won't get easier as she gets older. the kids have to work hard and commit themselves, lots of wall ball and bringing a stick with them everywhere. Good luck, be positive, work with her to get better. Have a catch

Interesting to see what 2017 Black will bring this summer !
Some new studs added to roster but Still have some long time players who never excelled That i guess comes from loyalty to some of the parents who brown it up to the coach 24/7 and have been there from the start .explains why ... this is especially the fact on their defensive end of squad !

Looks like The Islips will have to chase BS around even more with all the new middie/attack pickups! See you on the fields!

the reality is that 3-4 years ago ther4e was no option other than yj for most suffolk cpunty girls, when tg started it wasn't going to be easy to find older girls who had been playing together for 3-4 years to leave there team, that is not the case with the younger age groups, couple this with the fact that tg has closed the gap very quickly (and people are tiring of the yj act) the trend should continue

Actually my problem is with the most either have it or not it cannot be taught or trained when you are talking about 2020 kids is just ignorant. My experience with parents like you is they are usually compensating for a child who is average at best.

I am a 2015 parent and honestly all the back and forth concerning the younger teams is embarrassing to you posters as individuals and to the club. Keep in mind that a lot of it is started by the same couple of people, some of whom are not TG members. Let it go and wait for the summer to come and have some class along the way...our kids will appreciate it.

Totally unfair to the girls that tried out and gave there all.
If the player was a black team player before the injury, exactly where could the player be placed now? One additional player in these cases does not cost anyone a placing if they themselves were qualified.

Think of it this way : on a 22 player roster, if your daughter missed the black team and you are saying it was due to a returning player off an injury, doesn't that mean your daughter would have been the very last choice?
Of course it cost a girl a roster spot, even if she was the last girl to make the team she deserves the shot to prove herself. And no sage she didn't play last year in any capacity on any team. She should have been put on purple until SHE can prove that she can play at that level after taking a full year off. The girl that now is on purple, wether the last girl chosen or not got robbed and deserves the shot. But being from E.I. has it's advantages.

Didn't "that girl" as you say try out? Is it possible the returning girl is better? It's also pretty lame to call out a child and be anonymous while doing it. You are wrong and quite socialist minded. The roster move was correct.

That's great but we don't know who they are. If they are TG parents they should remember to be respectful and on point. If not then we become just like some of the clubs we left.

You do have a point here, it's hard to know if some of the girls this age have been playing for 5 and 6 years and look good because of that. Some started playing 6 months ago and are as good as the trained kids already. those are the it girls, but without a knowledge of how and were they have been in the past, its hard to know. It is just like students in class, two A students, one has to work really, really hard and the other just has to show up for the test. One has it the other needs to work at it.

Funny I think most know specifically of one family from point who fits this category !
Never accumalated much in performance and plained out in her game , but yet still stays on team on account of friendship with coaches family , Politics you cannot run from in this instance .

It seems CRAZY to me that most of this nonsense about the younger team started from a NICE post wishing them well! How petty and completely ridiculous! These girls are young- give them time to develop before you start judging them! All kids develop at different rates (this goes for the older girls as well).

Hi,

WOW, I just jumped on tonight because I heard the rosters were posted. I was happy to see the positive posts about the 2020 teams . I am also saddened to hear all of the negative conversations about 9 and 10 year olds and there parents.

Let me put the information that I know as fact in reguards to the 2020 TG team that was entered into the Hofstra tournament. The father that entered the team IMO had nothing but good intentions and nothing was done to slight any of the other FAMILIES from the 2020 Black team. Yes I said FAMILIES because I know we will spend countless hours over the next 10 months together forming friendships and relationships for the good of our children.

It is from those friendships that the Hofstra team was put together. My daughter played on the 2019 Purple team last summer. It was there that friendships were created. Three of the girls that played Purple were fortunate enough to make the Black. As the emails went out for invitations to the 2020 Black we exchanged congradulations to the KIDS for their accomplishments.

Now having played and practices side by side all of last year with the 2019 Black team many friendships were made young and old. Last years Black team had at least seven (I may be off by one) 4th graders playing "up" . The father simply reached out to the group of girls that played last year on the two teams because we all knew each other.

Not too long after the emails went out my daughter was asked if she wanted to keep her stick in her hand and play in the Hofstra fundraiser tournament. Please keep in mind that this is a parent going out of his way to volunteer his time to coordinate putting a group of 9&10 year old friends together to help Support Shannon Smith in her first year as a D 1 Head Coach.

By no means do I think for a second that my daughter is one of the "golden children" asked to play. She was mearly a kid that got together with a group of friends and played on a Saturday in the Fall. Was the decision to play as a TG team a mistake ? I guess so ! I do know that it was not done to hurt any 9 & 10 year olds feelings .I am sure that when indoor starts the girls will all find there place on the team . I know from my experience last year they all started off scared and shy and by the end of the season in July they were best friends begging to have sleep overs in the hotels!

We all have our kids best intentions in mind when we agreed to allow them to play on the TG team in the tournament.I know I did. There are many more tornaments in the fall. Perhaps a phone call to Bill Smith would go a long way as far as giving every roster spot a shot at playing together! The more the better in my opinion. if all 24 girls are interested two teams of twelve can be made!

I hope this subject can be put to bed and better time can be put into help create a TEAM BOND that will grow as the years pass and our girls develop as athletes and young ladies. I have a daughter starting her 3rd year on the 2015 Purple team and have seen the girls grow as players and human beings I hope we all can say the same for this group of girls but it all starts from US the PARENTS. A little communication will go a long way so lets get together with Bill and see if we can get everyone from the 2020 Black roster involved in the next Hofstra tournament!

I look forward to meeting all of you as the team gets together this winter! I hope you all feel the same. If this team is anything like last years 5th grade Black team we are in for a very talanted group of girls playing a game that THEY love to play. If we can put all of this drama to bed now and keep it to ourselves and not allow it to become something the girls are involved in the potential for great things is there.

Good Night, Jim Lang

My daughter has played for the 2015 Purple team for the last two years . last year I believe Seven girls were invited back to play from last season out of the 24 roster spots. One girl moved up to black and 16 didnt return. i may be off by one or two sorry wasn't studying the rosters. i also belive in year two we picked up another 2 players that were moved down from Black. that second year team went from playing very close games in the summer of 2011 yet never making a playoff round... this past season they were in every game played and went to the finals in one tournament and lost by a goal to a team that ruffed them up badly in one of the earlier tourmnaments. Turnover happens as the teams grow and the tryouts get more competetive as the teams evolve. I know that the Smith Family has stated their goal is to have two A teams in all age groups . I did notice that a few new girls are on Purple Roster and the girls that are not there were very good players and will be missed. So to answer your question as the teams get older the black teams seams to get tweeked here and there and the purple team ( in my daughters age group 2015) has had significant turnover with I think only 5 or 6 of the original rostered players from 2011 are still on the team!

Jim,

Very well said. At the time of the Hofstra tournament, only the kids that played together last year on either of the 2019 teams or kids that played in the same town programs were known entities of who would be on the TG 2020 Black team. Several kids were already committed to playing on a separate team "Lady Rebels" when this team was entered into that tournament. All of the girls that will be on the 2020 team got together before and after the game cheering each other on, catching up from the summer and even wishing one of the girls a happy birthday. So, for anyone to think that there was anomosity between the girls is completely wrong.

At the end of the day, we all have options to play for whatever program we choose to have our kids try out for.

Yes, tournament teams have become very competitive
Yes, there is competition between programs
Yes, kids at this age develop at different timess

Let's allow the kids to build friendships, play lacrosse at a competitive level and develop as great scholar athletes. We are all part of a Long Islanda Lacrosse family, like it or not. We should be focused on making sure that Long Island teams are well represented and be proud when we complete across the east coast. We would be much better served teaching our kids this amazing game rather than tear each other apart on this web site or any other for that matter.

Nice post Jim and I give you all the credit in the world for putting your name out there .That being said you when you state something as fact you should at least make sure you are correct. Stating that nothing was done to slight any of the other families from 2020 is completely wrong. He did slight some of the new families when some of the new kids were asked to play under the 2020 banner but not all.If you cannot see this as being a slight then I am not sure you will see anything as a slight. It is over and hopefully put behind but to keep insisting that not inviting all then calling the team TG 2020 is not a slight to those not asked is in itself a slight. Now to have one of those parents coming on hear saying he can pick out the future talented players and the kids either have it or they don't just adds to the feeling that this team has some parents that should get a reality check.

Excellent post Jim. It may need to be reposted frequently as the focus shifts.

I truely understand that feeling were hurt here and if families were slighted it should be fixed. I would also hope that there wasnt any other motive behind any of it. I do think it was a great opportunity for the group that played and I agree that everyone should get that chance. My post was a discription of the facts that I knew( correct to me) from my interactions with my daughter being asked to play( I dont know about any other interactions that went on). I look forward to our daughters playing together representing the 2020 Black hopefully for a long time! The talent for the 2020 black has been chosen by the program that we as parents are paying for. To say one 9 year old is better than the other is not for any of us to discuss that is why we are paying TG. If you have any other thoughts or ideas about fixing this for the girls PLEASE reach out to B S (he has my cell). I think with a little communication this can all be fixed so we can all move forward together so the KIDS can get on the field without us and start doing what they love to do!

Several kids were already committed to playing on a separate team "Lady Rebels" when this team was entered into that tournament.

Yes the kids and parents should move on but stop distorting the facts. If the way you went about entering this team was right way to go about it you would not need to be making stuff up.Curious how do you know several of the kids were already committed to play for another team, did you ask them to play ?

i am a TG parent. I respect the club, coaches, girls and the parents. Its our club! What a shame a few parents ruin things. Let the girls play and stop blaming your own club. Go play for another organization and only then will those people realize what they had in TG program.

My daughter plays for the Lady Rebels and had lots of fun playing at Hofstra- She didn't blink and eye about playing against the 2020 Black team which included the girls she will be playing with next season. I didn't bring it up and she didn't notice. She loves the girls she played with and against and I am sure if she continues to play there will be times that her teamates are on different teams. I have three older boys as well and can say for sure that it is the parent's job to give their child a healthy approach to competition and sports. I am looking forward to getting to know the entire TG family next year and I know my daughter is too. I think we should move on in a positive way from here. I know many who agree. Dawn Thomas

What you see here is a pile of stand up parents coming out with support for this team and stamping a name to it. That's impressive. What many of you reading this must understand is that these anonymous boards can be a nasty place and much of the crap is from people from outside the organization looking to fan the flames.

Stop whinning already and let it go. If it was such a big deal to you you should have contacted the Smith's with your concerns and things probably would have been rectified to your liking, instead you chooose to spew all this nonesens and engage in character asassinations of good people. Being part of a team is like being part of a family, there will always be hiccups, but they should always be handled in house.

I know it's early but are the TG's going to do the Syracuse tournament again, or look for a different one to attend?

I'm new to the club. Was looking forward to visiting with family upstate while doing the Syracuse Tournament. Any reason why they wouldn't be doing this tournament again?

I'm not sure I get your comment. Why wouldn't people pay attention to the roster their daughter plays on?

I like the Syracuse tournament, not so much the drive though. The one to dump is the Delaware tournament. The parking pass issue is a joke, the hotels that the tournament sponsers assign, stink. You get back from fields late and they rent your room out from under you. Then you have a million yj teams there and no games scheduled between yj and tg. They should drop that one and go back to best of the beach.

They will do a Hofstra tourny instead of Syracuse. The Syracuse one was not a ranked tourny and everyone hated the drive.
