Tell me again which teams don't have holdbacks?
You'd be surprised I bet. (Even some of these A and B teams have holdbacks)

I am sure this is correct being a holdback does not mean you are the best player. It just means you have a better shot at being the best player.

Why would anyone spend all that money to go out to Colorado for 13 year old lacrosse? Its crazy. Thats a years worth of club fees right there.

Especially when you are talking about the Diamondbacks.

it might be fun to watch the diamondback coach get thrown out of a game on national television assuming they have a shot at making it that far. i can see it now cameras showing all the dads on the sideline with matching team apparel and lanyards.

There are many teams that play man to man and then switch to zone and MM does not like this, feels it has no place in youth lacrosse. Really, then when should they learn to play against a zone??? Get with it MM, youth lacrosse is about kids being taught/coached and have them grow in the game. It is not about just you and your kid.

WYSL teams all have holdbacks and at the very least are made up of an ALL Star roster very different from the one that plays all year. Kids that are born in August now can not play with their teammates and friends that are born in the very next month. Lets not kid ourselves in believing that any team does not have a holdback . Teams are very competitive and there is nothing wrong with playing against the best talent for your kids age group .. meaning 1 or 2 year difference . Its funny to come on here and act like it is not everywhere and on every team. I can say for a fact that any of the 3 sports I played my entire life up to college had a 1-2 year difference in ages.

api is just looking for an easy trophy since they did not win any last year. seems dumb to spend the money to go all the way out to denver to get one, they should just play in one of the easier b level tournaments around here. thats basically what the wsyl is anyways.

A holdback is defined by anyone who is not age appropriate for the grade they are in. Pre firsts would fit into this category as defined in Webster's

The validity of any "National Championship" is based solely on the strength of the teams participating. Many of the tournaments proclaiming World or National Champions are jokes when 12 of the 16 teams involved are slightly better than rec programs. The teams and parents just use the Tournament as a way to vacation in Colorado or Florida.

Which is why this new tournament is trying to get the best possible teams to apply and attend

So boys born in August of the same year as someone born in Sept are not allowed to play . Sad, especially if you are a parent and was told by every school in the entire country that the best thing for your child is to wait, or try and make a best decision after a year.
1 month to 12 months age difference is what ALL OF SPORTS has used for ever.
Only now in the Helicopter world of cry baby parents do we try let our kids roll through with no real competitive atmosphere. Even though the younger always will be the older in a matter of a year. Good luck quoting Webster's in High School to your kid if your kid wants to play as an under classmen.

If you are a team in Maryland then you have holdbacks or pre first. Its the way the school systems are set up. Making a decision to hold back your kid now in 6th or 7th grade just for sports is crazy, however decisions that were made in the very beginning are being treated like a crime. Crying because your kid has to play against someone that is a few months or even a year older is sad.

Then why is it so hard for you to play your son up a grade level from 1st grade tell 8th. I get it wants they hit 9 th grade but before your son should be with the same age kids.

Yes , every team must qualify , many teams played in tournaments that were set up for them to win. The league play will also count . HOCO has many of the best teams at this age group in the country . Should be a lot of fun.

You want an advantage in YOUTH sports. Pretty simple. Just because MIAA schools have brainwashed you and all the rest of the prefirsts that everything is ok and you are in the right grade, doesnt mean the rest of the youth sports world buys into that.
You prefirsts parents just love to moan and groan that we are only a month older or even just a year..And you prefirst parents dont want little prefisrt to be one of the youngest players on field. But you dont mind that your prefist player is the oldest. You want an advantage at Youth sports that other children born on same day and year as your prefirst dont get! Let that same child be one of the youngest, you and your child got yours. Somehow that seems fair to you.

No difference of being held back as a prefirst or being heldback as a 6-8th grader. It is being heldback. Everyone agrees that you can do what is right for your child, but that doesnt give you some special rights to get an advantage other children dont get. Youth sports doesnt crave out special exceptions just because you held your child back for whatever reason. But lacrosse somehow justifies this special exceptions.

My friend son is the youngest on the team and 7th grade class his birthday is August 25 so he is always playing older kids and doesn't complain because he will get better and has to earn play time . They could hold him back but they won't because that is wimpy way of getting playing time . Make the kid earn it that's life .

Didn't DBacks win Saint Paul's for the guy who said they didn't win anything last year . Hawks was the best team last year then DBacks , Team 91,

It's hard not to qualify.

Most of the invitations were refused last year because the competition wasn't worth the time and expense involved.

Many of the Dbacks are doing Dicks TOC as members of the Dukes Nationals team. Like the Cannons feed Madlax Nationals now, Dbacks feed Dukes Nationals.

This is an off year for the 2022 teams at Dicks who still uses the archaic two year grouping U9, U11, U13. The 2022 teams are U12 this year so either they add older kids or they will probably get beat by a 2021 trophy hunting team.

API has to go out west to compete for a Natl. championship. Millon's objective selection committee won't look kindly on their 9-1 beat down of 89+2 at NXT or their zone defense.

I looked up hold back in Websters and I did not see where is refers to anyone who is not age appropriate for a specific grade. You cry baby parents who complain about hold backs, whatever that is, are ignorant of the reason why boys go to pre first.

If Ty gave a shout out! Its legit!

Ty hasn't attended any events for anything younger than 2020. Next season, he will start to look at 2021s. There are two years to go until he starts looking at 2022s.

Ty also just retweeted Mark Dixon's comments saying National/World Championship tournaments are too much for 12-13 year olds - so I doubt Ty is shouting out about anything for 2022s.

We all know why kids do prefirst?? Not mature enough for 1st grade, Behind rest of kindergarten students in skills, parent thinks they need more time in Kindergarten, and Yes sometimes to give their child an advantage in education and sports.MIAA is very competitive and parents know that the dont want their child constantly competing against older kids academically and physically. Some MIAA schools encourage (very strongly) that summer kids stay back.

But what has that got to do with YOUTH sports?? Does the MIAA now set policy for lacrosse youth sports??

This is the funny part of this point. Its the parents who have a son that is the 11th best player on the team. Or the 4th attackman that are the most upset. When you see a kid 16 months older then your son on his 2022 team it piZZes you off. You like the club you like the coaches you like the tournaments but you son will have to sit behind a kid 16 months older then him for the next 6 years. So if you add up all the playing time this older kid stole from your kid over the next 2 years before high school it adds up. I get the play in your grade no matter how old you are the summer before 9th grade. But anytime before that you are a cheat and a punk to play your son down a grade for his age.

Classic statement from a dumb [lacrosse] parent . What player no matter what his age does not earn playing time. No player does not have to earn it at practice or try outs. There are teams full with holdbacks that barely see the field. Crying like the tool that you are on here makes you look stupid.

What special rights are you talking about? The right the kid has to play with his friends that are in is class that happen to not be born in August or Sept 2003 like him, Or the right to the classmate . friend ,teammate that was born in Octob03 three through december 2004.
Following every rule and guideline for School and Club or Rec along the way. Special rights and statements about kids somehow cheating or not earning their spots is a bit harsh andflt out not true.
However , in the world that only a small part of the overall Hold Back community (that only lacrosse parents cry about) the Parents in the Private School World that are holding kids back now for the SOLE PURPOSE of an advantage on the field . That is completely different than what 90% of good , honest parents did for their child in the holdback community .. Special rights is a joke .

Little harsh there on him dont you think? Most of us get his point. Everyone usually earns their playing time. But it sure is easier to earn playing time when you are a holdback, especially when you are anywhere from 1 month to 18 months older than all the other players.

No you do want " special rights" for your holdback child that other children the same exact birthday your son has DO NOT GET at YOUTH SPORTS. You still cant comprehend that the YOUTH SPORTS world doesn't revolve around holdbacks and the MIAA schools.

Your child gets to play with his friends all he wants at school and on EVERY school team plus all HS club teams. But Youth sports is about age. It isnt about Holdbacks and letting your son along with other holdbacks get an advantage over others exact same age..or get "special rights" .

So no special rights isnt a joke, it is a joke that you think it is ok to give your son an advantage others dont get, just because you and your MIAA school decided to hold him back in kindergarten.

What are everyones thoughts.

I think they all are against these types of tournaments, practicing in the winter and fall, early recruiting and hold backs but fall prey to all of them.

Who cares? All the top teams will play each other at some point.

They don't always play each other. Many times the top teams will travel to a tournament and only play 2 or 3 competitive teams. For a true national championship, all the teams will be competitive. Whether you call it Young Guns, or Elite 8, or National Championship, teams just want to know where to find good consistent competition.
