More BS since MM got owned today on both sides of the field.
Zone press requires more athleticism and forces each player to move in sync. “Zone” means you are playing good defense in whichever “zone” that you happen to be in.You also MUST be able to play good man-to-man defense in order to be able to play a zone defense. That’s both on and off ball. If you can’t you are going to get beat for goals all over the place.

It's what you do when you don't have a solid line of defenders also. At this age, there aren't a slew of shooters who are going to beat a soft zone with a shot from just inside the restraining box. It is a great way to win games and cover up for defensive deficiencies, but MM is right that it doesn't develop young players. 1 goal / game in championship vs. Hawks and DBs for 88+3 sounds like poor coaching despite his point about DBs zone.

That never happened, but the API coach did get tossed from youth lacrosse game. See you at Hawks tryouts.

How does it not develop players? High schools and colleges don't run zone? Zone increases their IQ better than man.

If you play zone in youth lacrosse, you have completely given up on teaching the defensive skills that kids will need to play high school lacrosse. If your kid is on a team that plays zone, your kid is not being taught and you should look for a new home.

Agreed. This is sour grapes from coaches who weren't ready for zone. All HS and College teams run zone. It's increasing IQ. Need to know how to play both!

So much criticism on this board, but I'm curious who people think are the best coaches in this class and why. This is a serious question. All else being equal, who would you want your kid to play for other than his own coach.

So if a coach does not have his poles chasing the guy with the ball behind to X his a a bad coach? What if your team plays a match up style of Zone is that a bad coach? So if a coach see his team has slower foot speed then the team his is playing and switches to a zone he is a bad coach? I thought this game like basketball is all about match ups and realizing when a guy is slower or faster then you?

Not really. Zone isnt the best way to get gameday man to man defense for youth .
If your youth team is using Zone for all of its games. You arent getting the skills that a man to man defense would for young players.
There is time for Zone, man down, a vastly fast superior team . ...but it should be limited as anyone with any common sense knows man to man is a better way to teach youth the right defensive skills.
On a side note..The MIAA teams played much more Zone this year than I have seen in years.

So lets look at this full circle does the team in question only run a base boring basic zone 100% of the time or did they just use it to win a big game?

My son's team played them 4 times this year and 100% zone.

Or maybe the cry baby coach could use the opportunity to develop his offensive players on how to beat a zone. Pretty poor development if you only run sets against a man and never teach you team how to defeat the zone. Sound like an excuse by someone who got out coached and has his team ill prepared.

Millon has a point if they play all zone. Like always playing zone in youth hoops. Gotta learn man to man 1st and zone as change of pace or special situation

But I wonder what his corporate partners at T91 in NY think about his tweet. Played Spallina's 2023 Bandit team a few years ago in u9. They were playing backer zone. Couldn't believe it. Think about trying to explain a zone offense in a 30 second timeout to 2nd and 3rd graders.

Also played Millon's Tyker team that year when the penalties were a fast break rather than timed. He had his best player take the ball each time, dodge the point man and the slide to shoot. Unfortunately an effective strategy on my team that day but he certainly was not "getting kids ready for the next level"

hypocrite

I guess this does not sound good for them. Do they at least play a aggressive style Zone? Is it at least like a 5 and one style zone with one guy pressing the ball. Or do they just pack it in and dare you to shoot 15 to 20 foot shots?

And they went undefeated!! What's the problem? Those players are capable of playing man or zone. Great well coached team and well deserved championship. (they beat my sons team)

No one is concearned about reclass, double reclass, guest players or crazy parents? Zone is where we draw the line in the sand??

Millon just upset he got outcoached and beat again. The best 2020 team in the nation is 91 Crush from LI, they play zone all the time. Maybe Millon should talk to his 91 LI partners and try to convince them otherwise.

We played them 3 or 4 times this year. I will say their starting package defenders are good and fast. They all press out a lot. I was surprised those kids didnt get confused with that coach yelling push, hold, no push... That guy is loud. Overall kids have good footwork, solid fundamentals and speed. It might be the games I watched but goalies were meh..so zone may not be he best for them in that regard.

Figure head HC for 2022 with the 11 daddy ball assistants calling the shots. Can you please hire the goalie's dad so we don't have to hear him on the sideline??!!?!

Sorry guys nothing will change as coaching at API/ Dbacks but maybe the daddy assistants coaches but let's talk about something That is true . The WSYL just went to a 9-1 cut off on age plus a 100 mile radius from Home Base . I guess no flying in players from Texas to play ..

Sorry lime green dad but nothing is more amusing than talking about a club director that gets tossed from games for behavior, dad's in matching team gear and coffee tumbler mugs, and the moms with sweet neck lanyards of precious that aggressively flirt with opposing team dads rocking 18-packs. Please don't change. We feel important.

100 mile radius has always been the rule.

Not same rules - was 5/1 cutoff and many Maryland teams were too old to play - even when was 5/1 - crabs and hawks - for example. So Maryland teams won't be able to play with holdbacks and my teams will have fewer 8th graders eligible than this past year. If were 9/1 this past year teams would have looked very different in Denver. Seems like a fair approach.
