Actually the situation rarely comes up in Maryland as Maryland schools do not allow 8th graders to play on their high school team nor can they play for more than 4 years in any one sport in all their high schools combined. Many Maryland 8th grade players capable of playing for their high schools have not due to this rule. For Maryland you must be a full time student attending the school and eligible grade you are playing for so 8th graders can not do it. Your allegation that it is never enforced is self serving because it is not something that comes up in Maryland. Back to the original question though, he can not play this weekend or any weekend in the Hoco league as their rules are very clear on the point. If Looneys is playing Beach Lax or any Aloha or Hogan event, he is also unable to join the team. Curious to see if Crabfeast allows it or not.

Seems Looneys dropped the ball on this one.

I would doubt Looney's had any control on what he does at his school in Florida. I would assume that decision was made by the player and his parents and perhaps the HS coach, good old Tony Seaman. (of JHU and Towson Univ. fame)

Regardless the decision was made and the Looneys coach must know about the kid playing on the hs team or there is a bigger issue in that he does not know what a player on his roster is doing. Ultimately, the player and parents would decide but you have a knowledgeable high school coach and presumably a knowledgeable Looneys coach who would have communicated the rule to let them make the decision that was right for the boy. Maybe his new high school in MD is okay with him only playing through his junior year to remain eligible or he will red shirt freshman year.

here's the MIAA rules for eligibility.

II. Age Limitations
A student who has attained his/her 19th birthday before August 31 of a given academic year is not eligible to participate.

A student who has attained his/her 19th birthday on or after August 31st of a given academic year may participate only on the Varsity level.

III. Limits of Participation
A student may not represent any school, regardless of its affiliation to this Association, in any one sport at any competitive level for more than four years. Additionally, students may only be enrolled in grades 9-12 for participation in association athletic programs.

A student may not represent more than one school during any academic year in interscholastic athletics regardless of its affiliation to this association. A student athlete may appeal this guideline based on a move of his primary residence.

A student who has graduated from a secondary education program, either domestic or foreign, is not eligible to participate.

Noted above that Maryland has rules about 8th graders playing in high school so it is not an issue in MD but if any player outside of Maryland is doing this they should be aware of tournament rules and if the club he plays with is not honest, the other clubs should and will call them out if the rules state it is a youth tournament. None should be in Beach Lax or any Aloha event. Can not have it both ways - you are Youth lacrosse or high school lacrosse regardless of age.

Well most are written on the website as a need based thing. But I am sure most are not this way. But I think you would have to name a club and then we could tell you how many and how often it is done. I know with Madlax they wave the monthly fee if your son is good enough to make the team great.

Then that team/kid will just play in Hogan and Madlax tournaments

HOCO rules on subject: The Conference follows a grade based system based on the player’s current grade level and assuming normal progression of school to graduation. Players who are participating in any high-school level program ... should not be eligible for 8th grade/U15 competition in the same season.

The player is playing in the spring for their high school so they can not play in the SPRING season HOCo league which is touted as a spring league to get players ready for their summer tournament season. Their rules would lead one to believe he can not even come in for Championship games because it is a spring league and concludes in the spring. Let's see who works a deal. Dang rules keep getting everyone messed up.

Aloha"s rule for their youth tournaments:

No player that competed at the High School level (Fresh/Soph, JV, Varsity or a High School Club affiliated team) may compete in the tournament.

So a year played in Florida will count toward the four total when a player transfers to a Maryland MIAA school?
As an aside, What does this rule do to the defender on FCA Blue and the 2 kids on Crabs that turn 16 this spring/summer as that will put them older than 19 before August of their senior year?

an 8th grader turning 16 before 9/1/16 wouldn't be eligible for MIAA sports in 12th grade.

rule states player can not play for any one MIAA school for more than 4 years. no rule against playing for school outside of MIAA and then playing 4 years.

Also there are rules about transferring from MIAA to MIAA school as well. essentially you have to sit out a year if you switch miaa schools. I think Ryan Brown switched from St Joe to Calvert Hall and lost a year.

Per the above, no, you cannot play for non-MIAA and then play four years of MIAA. Read the first sentence under III. It says four years only - in any program. This is why all these kids reclass in 8th.

It is very specific regarding the fact that ANY high school counts toward the four years - not just MIAA.

It was either Gilman or McDonogh who got around the MIAA to MIAA transfer. They told the kid to enroll in public school for one day, then transfer thus they are transferring from Public to MIAA. Classy!!

I wouldn't put this past the varsity coach at McDonogh.

Not disputing that the rule (banning a player who has played high school lacrosse from youth tournament) exists. But questioning WHY it exists? What purpose does it serve? If the kid is on age or within the grade rules, why would being good enough to play HS prohibit him from playing in an "elite" youth tournament? Isn't the tournament supposed to feature the best on-age or in-class talent? It seems to me that it simply penalizes a player for being good enough to compete at a high level. Seems silly to me.

I agree with this also but why can a kid only play 4 years if he does not get held back. If a kid plays in 8th grade that means he is good. Why hurt him for being good.

For the Florida kid does this mean that Andy only gave him a 3 year scholarship. As far as the MIAA kids, I doubt that they even check birthdays. If they did Gilman football and BL Lax would blow.

[lacrosse], this could be a forfeit based on the bylaws of the HOCO league as it pertains to the normal progression to graduation and many of the Crabs 2020 players. All of the holdbacks and a few double holdbacks. Can't imagine what it is like to be 15 almost 16 and be in 8th grade.

Or just ask some local journalist come to to a piece on early recruiting and the holdback mania. Ryan M. won't listen to any of you, but if this trotted out in the Baltimore Sun or WaPo he'd care. He'd care a lot and it would cast a light in this inequity in this youth sport. There isn't another sport like lacrosse.

Crabs won but they did not dominate Looney's. I have nothing to do with either team but live near BL and went to the game. Crabs were down at half time and in the third quarter Ryan M had them start playing like goons. Also some very questionable calls that went Crabs way.
Individually, most Crabs players are not great, just good but most of them are older and bigger, this is how they win, 15 and 16 year olds playing against 13 and 14 year olds. To me an organization with no class or morals.

Crabs is a joke in that they think they dominate. Put that many older kids on any single team, and that team would win. Crabs are not individually great players and any parent who allows their kid to play with this kind of team is a sell out.

Y'all need to lighten up. Both Looneys and Crabs would prefer to play at BL rather than drive to Columbia. Both clubs agreed to it.
