When do the Crabs teams get so age heavy? If you look at the 5th and 6th grade teams the Crabs boys look appropriate for their age? Do they shed boys or push them down a grade in 7th and 8th grade? Is this something that the Baltimore private schools foster? Are they the ones really advocating for the boys to hold back? Seems like they would be just as at fault as the Crabs organization?

- 8th grade seems to be the big year where kids will repeat at another private school before moving on to high school.

- Yes, at 5th and 6th grade they are usually a very good team, but on par with the others in their age group. Then the fun begins as more and more holdbacks are added, but of course, that has nothing to do with their success.

- Kids who are smaller or on-age get displaced by incoming holdbacks. Using Crab logic, they are actually doing those kids a favor since they will have to try out against older kids in high school! Also, holdbacks beget more holdbacks - there is a trickle-down effect.

- The Baltimore private schools know exactly what's going on, kids move between schools and back again. Also, it's a pretty small community, all of the student athletes know each other and know exactly who's repeated, when, and where.

- I don't think the schools advocate for it, but I doubt they discourage it either, it allows them to tout their athletic prowess, which helps with recruiting and keeps the alumni happy.

Q: How do you make the Crabs 2025 team?
A: Start on the 2024 team.

I guess you don't know how to read. I already said Madlax 2020 is not playing HoCO. That's why it's up for grabs now.

LOL! So true - they definitely would have given Crabs and the others a run for their money - I'm sure they just had a bad day at Spring Madness...hahaha

They would have struggled in the A division of HoCo - better that they "self selected" ;-)

With a rule like that, how is hoco justifying not doing anything about the holdbacks and double holdback? It is their rule! Guess their management is so tight with the offenders and since they also hold their kids back, never going to change. Anyone w those kids should be forced to forfeit every game. Let them play but let it be a forfeit and do not allow ANY holdbacks in any championship game.

HOCO is run by Public Howard County Recreation Department. These people know exactly what they are doing with this grade based league. Howard County should get an award for being a cesspool of an county for promoting this garbage. Every other league run by Howard County Rec is age base..U11, U12, U13, etc...
Obviously someone has ulterior motives and wants to get in good with private schools or clubs.

Wrong - Every other league run by Howard County is U15, U13, U11, U9 in which kids play with kids a full year older or a full year younger - the same difference you are complaining constantly about in the Grade based club league with all these supposed holdbacks.

If there was U15, U14, U13, U12, etc. in the other county leagues, I would have some sympathy for you, but one is no worse than the other.

Teams were mixed within the age level which evens things out and teams with mostly younger kids have option to play in B with teams that are mainly the younger grade. Teams had/have choices and now only the special teams chummy with hoco and the tourney promoters set the rules and others are forced to deal with the results. There is absolutely no excuse for why hoco is allowing teams to break their own rule except that they forgot they put that rule in there. Nobody is looking for sympathy - just some legitimacy behind a league that does not follow their own rules and has a hundred excuses why and not one of them is about doing the right thing.

Bingo- can't be relied upon to fix it if you are a member of the private school holdback system.,

You must be a Crab parent or a Howard County Recreation employee with that logic. "U" stands for under . The next thing is called a number (15,13,11, etc). So meaning is UNDER (15,13,etc) ...That means it is age based. No one gets a select advantage for being older. Everyone gets to be the "oldest" at one time. Not like the Holdback/prefirst crowd who somehow think that their child is entitled to be the oldest player always thru their entire YOUTH playing days.

Not the guy you are talking to. But I think he was referring to the two ages per group. So yes there is a U for under but then there is a two year gap.(U15-U13) So the only way to make it a one age peer level is to have a U15,U14,U13,and a U12. This would be the most fair. But when you have the U15 to U13 gap you only stop the double holdbacks. Which will clean this issue up some. But you will still have the repeat 8th grader playing in the spring with his club. Not playing with his high schools JV team like all the correct no cheating kids.

The AA divisions are on age kids and competition is good, but I wish they could have been grouped better. VLC, FCA white, and MDX are all way higher than most in their bracket and it would have been better grouping them all together instead of mixed in with teams like HoCo pink and 3D. They did not do a true tier of the brackets for some reason. I suppose it's not obvious to everyone though.

The argument to make it grade based two years ago was to do more teams. But the question was never answered: why not just do one year age based teams?

Like another poster wrote, the U-11, U-13 and U-15 did put kids a year older out there, but in that system every kid gets to be the older kid once. With grade based it just created a permanent imbalance between parents who can afford to shelve their kids in private schools for a repeat year versus the families who decided to not do it or could not afford it. That isn't a good way to administer a youth sport.

Wish someone would post the name of the Howard County employee, who is said to be in management with the County, most likely Rec and Parks. This individual is stated to be in tight with one of the elite 2020 teams and it is stated it is Crabs. This is how Crabs was able to circumvent the in place HOCO rules.
If anyone knows who this individual is, post their name or at least their initials. This person needs to be called out and see if there is the possibility to take it above this persons grade level and have them explain why the HOCO rules for grade base was not followed.
Anyone?
