Top 20 programs own you morning noon and night 365 days a year. You are in that school to play lacrosse period. School is clearly second with kids guided into easy majors they have no interest in. Pick a mid to low D1 or D2 program for a nice lax / school / social life balance. They are still playing a game and in 4 years it is over

Even more reason by very Leary of signing into a D1 program when you are younger

Some great schools with some really good lacrosse. I don't think all of the girls who attend these schools major in basket weaving. But I guess you are right, why should you challenge yourself? When you are looking to start your career nobody is going to want to hire someone who graduated from a great university and competed at the highest level in a Division 1 sport. Take it easy, have some fun. Go to a school that you can get into without being a lacrosse player. Play club and tell people that you didn't want to work hard.

Six of the Top 10 Universities in the country are Top 25 Lacrosse schools. Why would anyone advise people to take the easy road?

19 of the Top 25 lacrosse schools are considered Top 50 Universities. Challenge yourself, you can do well in the classroom and on the athletic field.

Great schools with great lacrosse where you will get a degree that you can proudly display. But if you want to be a doctor, nurse, engineer or architect you are going to have a problem playing at these schools where its lacrosse first and academics second. This really only affects a handful of kids so its not a big deal unless your kid is one of them. When a 13 or 14 year old verbal's they have no idea what they want to do so its easy to guide them to an approved major. Good luck to all on being one of the first 2020's to verbal!

Throw in the following school who are all competing to be the best that they can be. All of these schools could be in ranked in the Top 25 at any time.

Academic Rank to the right:

Colgate - 19 - National Liberal Arts Colleges
Georgetown - 21
Vanderbilt - 15
Lehigh - 47
Yale - 3
Dartmouth - 12
Michigan - 29
Brown - 14
Boston Uni - 41

27 of the 34 schools listed are considered to be Top 50 Universities. Please stop with the basket weaving BS. The fact is, at many of these schools you can major in whatever you want. And after you graduate you can go get an advanced degree in your chosen field.

Reality is that some kids can go play lacrosse at a Top 10 or 20 lacrosse school major in whatever they want and then go on to grad school or medical school or law school. Also, not everyone wants to go on to medical school or become an engineer. Why do some of you want to put down the kids who have a strong desire to compete? Is it because your kid is not being recruited by the top programs?

Some girls may put lacrosse first and I would imagine at NU there is a lot of pressure but I am sure that many of the student athletes from these schools go on to have success in life.

Hate to break it to you, not every kid who goes to a mid tier D1 or D2 or D3 school loves their college experience or goes on to become a huge success.

Just because your daughter goes to a top 10 lacrosse school does not automatically equal success later in life. If se goes to any school to play a a sport and not concentrate on a major, she might get a job because of the name on the top of the degree, but if she only knows how to play lacrosse I guarantee you she will not have that job for long. If you looked at other threads you would have seen that the discussion of majors recently came up on another girls thread. I looked at the majors of some of the top schools and it basically came down to over a third of these schools were either uncommitted, in majors that are "lacrosse friendly", or are the equivalent of basket weaving or gym teacher majors. Maryland being the worst with over half there roster either uncommitted, or in a major called "Letters and Science", which is a major for uncommitted majors. Florida was second worst. I just looked at NU and they are one of the best along with "cuse. Princeton does not list majors, but Cornell did with one third going for hotel management. My daughter is going to a lower D1 school right now for one of the forbidden majors (nursing, medical, engineering, architecture) and is being coached by a woman that went to a major D1 college and has to continue her education at this school because the coaches did not want her to pursue one of those majors.

Moral of the story, don't assume your kid will get a good job because of the school she attended, and don't look down your nose at the lower ranked schools because your daughter might be going to finish her education there..... at an added pirce

Very true. Good post. And I wouldn't single out Northwestern. There is pressure to do well on the field at all those places. NU just has more success than some of those other schools. A quick look at NU's roster reveals several engineering majors (among starters) and several pre-med type majors in addition to many other majors that are certainly not basket weaving.

As someone who hires from a lot of these schools in my business, I am always impressed by the athletes that are able to compete at the highest level in college and work through the time management and academic grind at these places. It does take a special person, and it shows in their lives after sports.

I think that it is you who is looking down your nose. My point was very simple, Challenge yourself. It is possible to do well in the classroom and on the field.
If your child was offered a spot at one of the best universities in the country and she/you opted to go to a less competitive school that was her/your choice.

I know a girl who played for YJ's. She was "pushed" into taking an offer from a Top 10 program "because she would have the shot at playing for a National Championship." She also had offers from other schools with much higher academic ratings (top 5). She went for the national championship, has now transferred and is heading to another school that does not even in the top 100 academically. Be careful what you pick when you are too young to know.

You are very confused I think. First of all my daughter chose a balance between her future career and lacrosse knowing full well that the lacrosse only has 4 years left. After speaking with many grads, many of witch had to enroll in another school to receive the degree they need to further there career, she decided to fallow the career path knowing that she will never play for a national championship. If a girl and her family have the money to pay for college after her lacrosse career ends, than more power to them. We were very fortunate to receive a very lucrative offer from a lower D1 that would allow her to major in her choice, start as a freshman, and finish her degree in 4 to 5 years, witch is the least amount of time she needs for her career. Knowing that there are no full rides, and even at a State school with lower tuition, she decided to take the offer to reach her academic goals as quickly as possible. With all that being said, her schedule is extremely demanding. the amount of money given does mean a lot of work, 2 a day practice (including lifts), time trials, travel, team obligations, school work, off campus requirements for her major, and the subsequent make up practices all keep her very busy. But at least she will be done in a decent amount of time, and she still playing the game she loves. Besides, in five years no one will even remember her lacrosse career like 99.9% of all our daughters. she'll just be in less debt.

I think that it is you who is looking down your nose. My point was very simple, Challenge yourself. It is possible to do well in the classroom and on the field.
If your child was offered a spot at one of the best universities in the country and she/you opted to go to a less competitive school that was her/your choice.

I hope she wasn't an English major.

Probably the TG kid who moved over, easily the best in the age group and better than the YJ 2019 commits, so it shouldn't surprise anyone

What makes people like you tic. Are you so unhappy in your life that you need to sit at home and send snarky ,nasty posts on a youth lacrosse site. Here is something you should think about, no matter what school your daughter attends, if she takes after you she will be nothing but a petty, small minded bully. Never think the name on the top of the degree gives you class, or insures success.

"Child" is the key word. Most eighth graders don't know what electives they want to take in HS, much less what kind of college would be a good fit. Insane! (If true.)

Please don't judge others when you do not know all of the facts. This girl could have played at a number of top tier lacrosse schools. She chose Syracuse because they have one of the best programs in the area of study she is interested in. She is a smart girl who made a very smart decision. Congratulations to her and her family.

That's the thing , "field of study" , she is 13 years old. "Could have played at a number of top tier lacrosse schools" ,says who? Good for her she is a good player at the 7th grade level and I believe going to her dream school and hopefully will find a degree in the field she wants when she is 20 but its those above kind of statements that make people wince a little.

College area of study she is intrested in 8th grade
While I'm not saying she does not know what type of career she wants to pursue it is very rare at 13
Your post would of held much more water had we been discussing a jr clotting prior to her sr hs season
But yes best of luck to her in her college future

Sorry but find this one hard to believe. If it's true, it would be national news and you'd see the various articles including Sports Illustrated, just like the soccer and softball 8th graders who were super early in their respective sports. There's a knucklehead running around also saying his daughter is committed to Princeton as a current 8th grader. Uh huh. If it's true and it's field of study based, gotta hand it to the kid that she knows exactly what she wants to study and left lacrosse rankings out of it. smile. Remarkable with now 4 and 1/2 years of education left to go before college she's got it all figured out. Just let me know where I can find the Sports Illustrated article, which is bound to come out especially in light of all the recruiting proposals.

Your argument does not hold water, there is as multitude of boys that have made a verbal in the past and present. Remember optimal word is "verbal". So, having said that it is a fact that this young lady made a verbal commitment to Syracuse. I wish her nothing but the best! Plus remember the NCAA is probably going to change rules very soon to September of Junior year very shortly. That means NO contact from coaches to players or families and vice versa. So you will see a rush trying to get it done before this happens....... Any thoughts???

Wasn't an argument. If a girl made a commitment to Syracuse as a 2020, it would be national news, Sports Illustrated stuff. An 8th grader committed to a top lax program...good stuff, newsworthy. Do you really think if a 2020 announced a commitment that it wouldn't be national news, especially with all the visibility with recent proposals?....just as the trailblazing girls did who made national news with their verbal commitments in soccer and softball did as 8th graders. This is a girls forum is it not? And everyone thinks there is some big rush with the new proposal, but there really isn't. It's escalated from years past, and it surrounds the current best of best from 2019's. There is no rush to get 2019's or 2020's to verbally commit. Most 2019's (really their parents) are sitting around wondering when princess is going to be contacted by coaches. That proposal isn't being enacted tomorrow, so for the majority of coaches it's business as usual until it does. Remember most want it, so why would anyone rush, when what they all ask for is time to evaluate? Back to the matter at hand, so where was this wonderkind's verbal announced at? Oh, let me guess, it's super secret and you just happen to be in the know. If you are so in the know, then I'm sure you wouldn't mind sharing? SI is waiting to do the article on the next young prodigy. Any thoughts?? Yeah, give us all a break and read, don't post.

Not everyone is loud. Some are more humble and prefer to just let their daughter play lacrosse, and support her in reaching her personal goals in the manner they feel most appropriate . No need to broadcast her accomishments to validate her success.

Daughter is not from Cuse area - she has family there, but has never lived there. Dad is not bff with GG. He only just met him recently. Her success is based on hard work.

I'm sure all of that is true. Still think it is crazy to make that decision so young. If she is that good, which I don't doubt, she would have as much time as she wanted to make a decision. Schools would wait for her. So she could be at least two/three years older, and make a slightly more informed and mature decision. 12/13 year olds do not have a fully formed frontal cortex. Adolecents, through no fault of their own, are impulsive and "live for the moment". Let them grow up a little before making these big decisions that will effect the rest of their lives.

Uhhuh. Obviously either not humble enough that you found about about it and posted it, or you are related to precious and posting the "accomplishment". In either event, bff to GG, not bff, "very good player", "her success", it all smells like nonsense. Every kid posts about an acceptance on Instagram/Twitter, or their friends do, but you're going to come on and tell us all she's so special that she and the parents are the one in a million that will keep it to themselves? Not even worth responding to any more....just sound like another delusional parent/interested party on how this princess is the one, so so special, successful, personal goal driven 8th grader. Congratulations, I'll wait for the book chronicling how special you are all. No axe to grind either, my daughter is actively being recruited, but I don't come on an anonymous message board touting how special she or any other 8th/9th grader is. Sorry, give us all a break.

But you had to mention anonymously that your little princess is being actively recruited on a 2020 board. Look in the mirror [lacrosse], practice what you preach.
