With Mount Sinai trailing by four goals, it looked as if the team's 22-game winning streak would come to end in just over five minutes.

Rather than go quietly into the cold night though, the defending state Class C champion s used that time to display how they won all those games in the first place.

Shayna Pirreca scored the winning goal in sudden-death overtime to cap off a 6-0 run and lead Mount Sinai to a 10-9 victory at Rocky Point Tuesday night.
Pirreca's overtime heroics were made possible by Jessica Demeo's performance at the end of regulation. She scored three goals within the game's final 3 minutes, 21 seconds.

"This is one of the greatest team wins I've been a part of," Mount Sinai coach Al Bertolone said. "As poorly as we played early, we showed how good we can play in the second half."

"It was a complete team effort," said Pirreca, a senior attack who will play for the University of Florida next season. "We never lost faith. This team has accomplished so much."

Pirreca finished with three goals as Mount Sinai (3-0) won its 23rd in a row.
Demeo led the team with four goals, including her late hat trick and equalizer with 50 seconds left.

"We knew we should never give up," said Demeo, a junior midfielder who has committed to Bryant.

Mount Sinai's other catalyst was junior Kasey Mitchell, who scored two goals and had an assist and a game-high seven ground balls won.

Rocky Point (1-1) took a 5-2 lead into the first half, and extended its lead to 7-2 by the 17:26 mark in the second half.

Rocky Point goalie Shannon Abernethy led a defense that frustrated Mt. Sinai for much of the game, finishing with 16 saves.

The hosts were also led by eighth-grader Madison Sanchez and junior attack Adriana Greco, who scored three goals apiece.

Ashley Faulhaber scored her second goal for Rocky Point to put the team up 9-4 with 7:11 left. At the 5:06 mark, Mary Ellen Carron scored to begin the Mustangs' improbable comeback.

"Nothing is impossible," Mitchell said.

After Tuesday night's win, it's hard to disagree.
