....Well. why don't those given 3 kids who are held back play at their own grade level and "accept the challenge"? In fact if you use your own logic, those 3 kids should be "accepting the challenge" and playing up one grade, not dropping down.

I dont know. My son's team has 3 "holdbacks". They are all May through Aug birthdays. I'm not even sure if that fits the holdback definition. I know the parents well enough and the kids all started pre K late on purpose. I cant imagine they were looking at having an advantage in HS lacrosse at that point.
