August 26, 2011, 10PM - Hurricane Irene continues to move up the east coast and the National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for Long Island. This means hurricane force winds are expected within the next 48 hours.

There is a high potential for extensive damage and power outages. High winds and drenching rain are forecasted to begin on Saturday and continue throughout Sunday.

LIPA is closely monitoring weather conditions and making every preparation to respond to our customers’ needs. This includes supplementing our own crews with additional personnel from both on and off Long Island.

If you should lose power, please report it to LIPA by either calling 1-800-490-0075 or going to our online Storm Center.

If you see any downed wire, do not touch it or go near it – assume any downed wire is a live electric wire – and report it immediately to LIPA at 1-800-490-0075.
