Interesting observation so I did a sample of schools and found that the scoring percentage on regular shots versus free position shots is statistically even. Some schools were dead even while other just a few 1/100ths different. Stony Brook did have a larger spread at 59/100ths different. I can imagine most coaches would take a free position shot late in tie game--you can always pull out of the shot.
