My fear is that the girls that opt to play will likely improve significantly, making it more difficult for my daughter to keep up. In short, I wonder whether we're already somewhat late to the party and frankly was surprised by our invitation.

Any thoughts / advice would be much appreciated.

Makes no difference at all! It's whatever you guys want to do. Some of the best players started in high school so don't join out of fear shell be left behind. I can tell you my girls have been playing travel since 5th grade and I wouldn't trade the memories and experiences and friendships made for the world. It is a great family experience. Good luck!
