Because 5th - 8th they are still learning the game and figuring out things about themselves. Let it wait till high school, what is the hurry? Let kids play on age with their piers, not kids a year older or more.

The kids will have plenty of time in high school, college, and life thereafter to compete with older and younger people. For now, let them be kids and compete against piers of their own age.
