My daughter is a goalie so we asked refs this question . A goalie stick is not illegal if it meets the length requirement, and the ball does not get stuck between the cradle of the stick and the mesh. because of the depth of the pocket, and the fact that she is the only player on her team that is fully padded, she gains an unfair advantage over all other field players. i.e. it is vastly more difficult for a player to check a ball from a goalie stick, and in a ground ball situation , or in going into the 8 , a goalie could go for the ball or the goal with greater veracity because she a lessened fear of injury. To keep everything even she can not cross into the attacking end of the field.

The stick is illegal for more reasons than just the length... Field stick cannot have shoe laces for shooting strings but for goalie crosse laces are allowed
