The NLF are allowing the 2020's to kick recruiting season off at the Boy's Latin School November 5th inviting all 16 clubs that now makeup the organization. Should be a good event and it will be interesting to see the turnout from the coaching side.

Um, I think they are inviting the 2021's this November 5th. . . . Check the NLF website.

There just aren't enough kids not ALREADY in private school for this to be something large enough to impact the grade? Your suggestion would be that a ton of 2019 public school kids are all of the sudden, on a shortterm (misguided!) whim, are going to flock to privates? How are they getting in? What schools have the space?? School starts in about a month, with fall sports starting in about two weeks! Not gonna happen in any big way. Clue: when you hear something, think through the numbers, the logic, and the logistics, and ask yourself, "Is this possible?". SMH

reply
I dont think the poster said the players would change their current year or school, it said they will PG (after graduating HS) but play down as 2020 for the fall. Because at the end of the day they will enter college with 2020's after they PG.

I've seen this already this summer with some New England/Westchester teams. Boys still play every once in a while as 2019 but also play 2020. If it gets you into the better college okay. (I don't like it but the way things have been going I can see it).

They are going to reclass next year based upon a prospective PG year two years hence?? That is even exploiting the system - this blatantly lying! A SA attends school with an anticipated graduation year of X based upon the grade the student is in at the time - you cannot speculate that you will do a PG year and therefore prorate yourself down now. wth?! (And BTW PG means "post graduate - it doesn't change your graduation year! This is worse than if a 7th grade kid speculated that he we was going to repeat 9th grade in two years, so he decides we will play down in 6th grade that year and the next two! Lacrosse can't go age-based for pre-HS students fast enough!

Like it or not, that is very common for players to commit to doing a "PG" year after graduation somewhere TBD, and then play with the grade down from their current school grade.

It is definitely happening where we live, and we have two reclassed players on our team, and know of a few that played 2019 last season who will now declare they are declassing and play 2020 next year.

For many parents, it is a more economical way to handle the situation as it only amounts to 1 year of private school tuition down the road vs. moving to private school after 9th grade to repeat 9th grade and then committing to 4 years of private school tuition.

If 2020 is a much stronger class, why would 2019s want to get mixed in with them? It would seem that being in a weaker grad year would benefit the 2019s. Coaches are still going to fill up their 2019 recruiting classess

The economics of it has no bearing on what grade they play club lacrosse for - one has nothign to do with the other. Reclassing of SA either happens or it doesn't - you are either changing grades or not. This is as ridiculous as the perv who identifies today as a male and tomorrow as a female so that they can get into the womens' lockeroom. It's purely to exploit a system for personal gain at the moment. And if, "where you live" happens to be MA or thereabouts, I am not surprised - that is the one place where the reclassing phenomenon seems to be a badge of honor - no one there is even remotely afraid to tell you their Johnny reclassed and is playing against younger boys. At least in MD, or mid-Atlantic as a whole, there is a some sort of guilt about reclassing, in that if you ask about a kids age, the typical response is for them to tell you their kid are in the proper grade - the indirect answer to a question that wasn't asked is because they don't want to tell you the kids age, because they know they're gaming the system.

I consider this to be a far worse example of breaking the rules than simply reclassifying. I would have to think that the tournament directors would balk at letting this happen but Madlax has allowed a 2018 to play with its 2019 team in the past because the boy plans to PG. I will let my 2022 play with the 2023s when it looks advantageous since he "might" do a PG year. I agree with the above poster that age based lacrosse can't happen soon enough.

Wait, so there are pre-holdbacks now? Oh boy, the holdback complainers will be busy this season if they don't completely melt down. At least us holdback parents can take a rest. The audacity of these pre-holdbackers. I guess we'll have to pre-holdback our holdback kids to keep the world order in check.

You guys are funny with your shades of grey arguments.... as all the dirtbag parents of holdback kids like to say, it's within the rules. It's not far worse, all of it is morally corrupt and cheating. But I hope the privates get beat at their own game or it pushes age based closer to reality.

Can a kid really move from a B team to an A team in an organization at this age? Or are the teams already set.

Unlikely to move from a B team to A team but not because he isn't good enough. The A teams are set and will add one or 2 players only if they have lost players for some reason. It is unfortunate because there are many great players on the B teams.

There are spots on A teams available on Outlaws, tryouts today, team is attempting to reinvent themselves again. Also FL$, where a good number of A team players are leaving. Otherwise no chance at crush or express. Crush will remain great, while Terps will remain one of the pack.

No other top FOGO would go there to play second string. So what would be the point? The elite LI FOGOs are on Crush, Terps, FL$ (leaving for Turtles), Leg, Sweetlax, and Empire. None of those kids would even entertain being the second guy. They would be better off training a pole for when the kid has trouble.

How about the 8 kids. Kids that dont play that much and would be better off on another team. Parents are hoping for the best and getting the worst.. spalinna , winkoff, chanenchuck and others are lining their pockets at your kids expense. They only care about top 9 kids. Everyone else is a donation.

My son has been with express for many years and this tryout was Hardly a disgrace. They had a big turnout . There were a bunch of express coches there evaluating the players who coach other express teams not just 2020 teams. There was a lot of competion . They played on 2 turf fields right next to each other and it was very organized.

They changed that check the tab that say's latest NLF news and they click Fall Schedule. Most of these programs currently their high profile teams are their 2020 squads. The 2021's will get their shot next year at the Under Armour event and Boy's Latin in 2018.

Best players leaving for Turtles, which will be a team in the mix among the top 5-15 along with the Terps, legacy, maybe outlaws. These teams will all have a good season but will not beat the top 5, which will be Crush, Looneys, FCA, after that the water gets a little muddy. Should be fun watching all these teams this fall/summer.

Word was LEGGY was phone calling Chaminade and St. Anthony's kids trying to strong arm them into being on a second "Catholic School" team....would love to hear input. Mostly, is this Turtles team worth making a jump for...

As for Turtles being in the top 15 mix...They will be exactly wherever fl$ was in that mix at best. Why not wait or have a practice before the proclamations or perhaps even just hope its a better experience and not worry about the mythical ranking.

The FL$ team wasn't all that great, so I doubt this team will be

There were some other very good players at the tryouts from other AA level teams. Do not know if they will actually go to the turtles, or just getting some playing time and exploring options. If they go the team would be a big upgrade from fl$. We will see.

Serious question, if you are "committed" and have a B/C average, is that good enough? How much "wiggle room" do lacrosse coaches have to get lacrosse players into a school? Do they have more "wiggle room" for their number 1 recruit. Can they get anyone in they want?

While I am asking questions, does a kid with a really high GPA/SAT combination, help "balance out" a recruit who isn't as strong academically? Just curious what happens

This depends on which school. If you are referring to an Ivy League or Patriot League school, schools have gotten more strict with players GPA's and SAT scores so a B/C average won't make the cut but all programs certainly have wiggle room but only so much.

How is it that a "kid with a really high GPA/SAT combination . . .isn't . . . strong academically"? Those seem to be two contradictory academic assessments that shouldn't exist in a decent school system!

Can you read? It says a kid who has a really high GPA//SAT would "balance out" a kid who isn't really strong acadmenically. Is that how coaches build their recruiting classes?

What about ACC schools or Big 10? What are coaches looking for an early commit to maintain (as far as GPA). Is a Low B or C average "good enough" for a kid who isn't one of the top recruits in a class?

Trouble is a strong word. Kids left for sure and reasons could be take as justified. But this team will beat Igloo, lose to Express and the new Turtles team is still tying to fill a roster. So the word trouble could mix in well with a few of those mentioned other than Express.

Um, there are very few C grade players playing in ANY league. You'll find the occasional C but that's a specialized position. Sure, Ivy will apply their matrix. But unless you're THE BEST goalie/FOGO on a team, don't plan on playing major D1 with a B/C. Want proof? Look at the rosters. . .all major prep schools or high level HSs. . .

Every school has a different criteria but if the player committed with a B/C average for argument sake, they are looking for that player to stay consistent which is then that particular schools criteria. For a non blue chip recruit, if they aren't within a few points of the schools criteria, they will more than likely have a difficult time getting accepted because remember, admissions has the final say, not the coach. But like I always tell my athletes, utilize this great game as a gateway to get into school you most likely wouldn't have had the opportunity to without lacrosse which is why I said there is wiggle room.

I am really wondering about all the rising 9th grade students that "committed" last year. Will a school still want them with anything less than an A/high B average? I would guess that "regular" students would never get admitted to ACC, Big 10 schools with anything less. And since there is no contact right now, I would think some kids would really be sweating it out (well, maybe not if their grades are low).

You are not getting into Norte Dame, UVA and Duke with Bs and Cs. There is a limit as to how much the coach can do. Best to shoot for UNC where their athletes take paper classes.

They lost one of the best face-off kids in Long Island, truth and a real tough loss, they lost a very solid midfielder, truth, and two very good defenseman, truth, the other players who left will not affect this team at all and most will see their replacements as an upgrade. So to say this team is not still talented and won't beat the teams mentioned other than Express is very skeptical at best. The boys will play competitively so lets stop the bashing and let the results speak for itself.

The only "truth" is the fact that FL$ lost approx 40% of the top performing team in the program. That is the clearest sign of an organization in decline and should answer a lot of questions for anyone contemplating it as an option for their son or daughter. You can debate the quality of the departing players all you like, but that won't change another season of horrible practices, C class tournaments, and owners who rarely even acknowledge parents on the sidelines. Good luck with that.

The first qoute has the first university spelled incorrectly, and the reply should say others or other two. If you are going to comment on academics, it might resonate if you utilize proper spelling and grammar.

FL$ lost three impact players. 2 mids who both faced off and 1 Dman. Every other loss is replaceable turnover. The program should look itself in the mirror as to why it lost so many and adjust.

Admissions acceptance rates:

Duke 17%
ND 22%
UVA 30%

Even at 30% you gotta have all A's.

I'm not the daddy, but unless you are a top 20 recruit you are not getting accepted to UVA witH Bs and Cs from out of state.

My son is a blue chip recruit and turned down UVA with a B average. You would be very surprised at the schools that would take him.

Been through the recruiting process a couple of times. IMHO it would be wise to pick a school your son can compete at both academically and athletically. Academically being the more important of the two. If you think your son belongs at ND or UVA or some other high academic school with B/B+ average in HS you're heading for trouble. Mine was recruited by Ivies, Academies and High Patriot. Would have loved to see him go to one of those schools. Went to a school closer to his Academic profile and is doing fine. The reality is, without lacrosse he'd never get into those other schools. Not sure he would get out either if he had gone because of Lacrosse. Playing a sport like Lacrosse at the D1 level is a full time job. Very tough to do and still be able to study and have a social life. Not sure you're doing your son any favors by putting him in a situation where he has to struggle to get C's. Coming out of UVA with 1.9 in Social Sciences or something is not getting you anywhere. Even if the degree says UVA.

Same here!! My son is having a tough enough time at a top 50 school/ top 10 Lax, although he could have walked right into any of the others you mentioned with a B average. We are happy with the choice he made. People don't understand how difficult it is juggling D1 and academics. Oh, and the "tutors" they promise are not miracle workers!

I wouldn't waste my time attempting to refute a baseless claim. Oh sorry, does the fact he says "I have news for you" mean he has actual knowledge? Using a term like daddies for grown men and referring to their sons as future D1 superstars was intentionally demeaning, or maybe that subtlety was lost on you. My post was intended to contradict that insinuation. Good fathers, good kids, not sure why you or anyone else would care what they are doing. Focus on your own kid.

Why do other parents care? Because when back room deals happen those kids and families who play by the rules lose out. There are certain parents who refuse to let honest competition happen and are always looking for an angle. You can say that is the way of the world or whatever but you can't say no one else has a right to be annoyed.

Express is playing with fire with the way they handle the boys that attend Catholic school. If you choose to leave Express for another club your son's playing time at his high school will be affected. The fact that they would do this to 15 year old boys is just pathetic. They should be very careful. Parents aren't going to sit on there hands anymore. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Yes and No. While I found playing ball at a D I college and finding time to study to be a challenge, the support I recieved through the athletic department and the tutors it provided to be a big help. You're not playing ball at UVA with a 1.9, so there is a good deal of support to make sure your GPA doesn't slip that low

I disagree that leaving means your son's playing time will be negatively impacted. The coaches definitely play that intimidation card but, in the end, are smart enough to understand that they cannot retaliate in that fashion.

There are parents out there that have been told, "If you leave, your son will not see the field this lacrosse season". You call that intimidation, someone else may see that as a threat. We are talking about 15 year old boys here. Why would any parent want their 15 year old son around a coach / organization that condones this type of "intimidation"?? I know that this isn't a new practice but I wonder what the administrators at St. Anthony's or Chaminade would think about how Express handles their business.

The Admin has looked the other way for years when it comes to Express/Channy, etc. It is extremely bad for the Catholic religion and its representatives. My son has gone to Catholic elementary but not going to the HS because of this. What a shame.

Long island club rankings based on their tryouts:

1. Crush

2. Terps
3. Legggac

4. Igloo
5. FL$
6.True Blue

Then the B teams like
Moran/Wiz
9D1 orange
express Leghart
empire

Turtles would all my guess in the 4-6 spot, but know one knows because they have never played a game

This is the Express model and the coaches and directors have done it for years. Keith Weiczorak (St Anthony's), Mike Channechuck (St Anthony's), Mike Schwalje (Kellenberg),and Jack Moran (Chaminade) all personally engaged in this intimidating, bullying, despicable behavior. Its incredible the Catholic schools don't take their own mission seriously enough to protect these kids from this behavior. The curtain will be pulled back on these predators and the numerous scams they continue to operate.

They will not. Best players they ever had just graduated. Prior and current coach were/are good however NONE of the sports there have the support of the administration.

3-6 are interchangeable... above and below groupings are clear though. Turtles 7-10. its doesn't really matter at all though. There are kids on 1,2 that should be on 8-10 and vice versa throughout the ranks...

Exactly!! This guy was probably everyone's friend on the sidelines and then rips them apart behind their backs. I've never heard such a wimp complain as much as this guy about another parent. His kid would probably die of embarrassment if he knew he was on here whining like this.

Also any individual recruiting events for this fall. I enjoy some of the banter on this site, but lets also discuss events that would help our boys.

Try to get into Showtime (next Summer, but invites go out in two weeks), otherwise for the Fall, Philly Freshman is a great individual and team event as well as the HS Classic here on LI. NLF team event (LI) and Towson Gold.

Funny...this time last year buzz was about Crabs losing players to FCA. Now FCA D1 commits flipping to Crabs. Seems odd at this stage of club lax.

Seems odd to be talking club when your sons should be on Varsity. If your still talking club his HS team must be awful. If he's not on Varsity those D-1 dreams are just that.

If club is so bad in HS, then why do all the top players still play with their club during these years?

Varsity starts in the Spring. There is club ball now. Not odd to talk about what is happening. While my kid has already been a starter on Varsity, that doesn't mean kids who haven't been have to give up their dreams. Kids develop differently. As long as a kid is a big time contributor as a junior, there can be a place for them at the next level. Only people who have never played a minute of college ball think your dreams are dead in the Fall of your 10th grade year.

Precisely it's a dream. What program does your kid start for?

Why does it matter where this guys son plays varsity? He is making a point that, if a kid wants to play in college, he should continue to strive for it. There are many levels of college lacrosse and not every kid has to play in a top flight D1 school. There is a lot to be said for a student that chooses a quality education and plays D3 or wants to play competitive lacrosse without the pressure and plays club.

They will not be that good, at tryouts will not be excepting spot.
They got killed last tear in Maryland.
Coaching was horrible
Practices stunk
Will not return

Dreams have a way of becoming reality for kids who work hard and have parents who support them, as opposed to having some tool bag dad trolling to put down some high school program.. You never said what college you played for. I know the answer is no college. I have yet to meet a person who has played in college look to put other players down. There are, however, legions of parents who never played who think they know best what others should be doing.

Wow laxdad69, you won't stop until someone answers you. On the website, if you click on the register now button, it lists the years and the positions that you can register for the Sept 2 tryout. The years listed are 2021 through 2025. I get s sense you'll be annoyed by this information.

If your son is good, there is not much downside to reaching out to the director of the organization and having a discussion.

Another whole year for the current "committed" 2020's to wait to see if those caoches are still interested. I wonder how many will be happy in 365 days and how many will get the old "sorry, you don't meet our academic standards" line. Keep hitting the books guys!
