has supposedly committed to Syracuse.(re.Sun-Sentinal). She's only half way through the eighth grade. CRAZY. When I was in the eighth grade I was just trying to walk and chew gum at the same time. What a world we live in!

Not good enough source, Sun Sentinel. Someone on here is demanding Sports Illustrated write up as proof, LOL. Anyway, congrats to her!

Its interesting at this age if college coaches consider a kids actual age when evaluating players . Every parent knows that at the 8th grade age 1 year makes such a difference . I don't think college coaches even consider it as when my daughter went thru it I don't recall any coach asking her how old she was or her birthday. Now that 8th and 9th graders are being recruited its makes a bigger difference . Take a descent 9th grade player move them to 8th and that kid will look like a superstar etc. but in reality as they get older that year becomes less of an advantage .

That wasn't a demand for proof. We all knew it happened. It's just starting to get out now, and as this commitment generates more visibility, you're seeing more and more people call it out for how absurd it is, connection to gait or not.

That is the thing that baffles me about the hold back thing. I recently saw this first hand on the boy's side. A friend of mine's son had zero D1 interest and could not make an A team in 2018. Same kid this fall drops to 2019 and makes the All-Star team at Philly Freshman Showcase and gets a write up about how great he is. That same kid come freshman year of College, he will have to play against the older kids again... What then? The Coaches don't understand this? I guess that's why the biggest offenders of holdback recruitment, UNC, Hop, MD,UVA and few others have but one championship between them in last number of years...

Congratulations to anyone that gets and early offer but any parent of an athletic holdback child should have their child taken away from them by the state!

The kids lives in Florida. Cut off for school are different in different parts of the country. I know that in Pennsylvania (or at least some parts),the cut is Sept. 1st and in Indiana, the cut off is June 1st. I agree there are plenty of red-shirts out there, but everything is not always as cut and dried as it may seem.

Congratulations! It is always lonely at the top. This won't be the last time you encounter jealousy. It's nothing but ugly. Ignore it and best of luck. MANY people will be routing for you and only a few jealous people will rough against you. Congratulations and best of luck!

It's good to see that people are not only talking about all the hold-backs in Maryland. Looks like they do it everywhere. What's interesting is - that for girls - they grow and mature earlier - by the time they are in high school - the others will catch up. Maybe it was prudent for the parents to commit now - waiting until she is a junior in high school would have nullified their "hold back strategy".

Most of you who come on here have a warped perception of what you want and you want this girl to fail. YOU are sick. The worst kind of evil is the one who makes themselves try to look smart by making other people's situation look bad. Unless you are in this girls shoes and unless you are THAT family... you have no business making assumptions as to "hold back' or any other implications you make to make yourself feel better because although you TRULY believe you are not jealous, YOU ARE. Your intentions - to save the young players - no one believes for a second you care that much about the well being of these girls. Chances are, you never have to worry about what you would do if given the same opportunity. If your daughter was in 8th grade and was a stand out - given an offer - you say you know what you would do. You are such a perfect person you would be "father of the year" and tell those coaches XYZ.. Sure you would! NO ONE should pass judgement on anyone unless they have walked in their shoes. So stop pretending you are that perfect parent, wish people well with their unique situations and focus on your own. Your know it all, perfect parenting is exploiting you way more than it is the girl you are bullying. Grow the [lacrosse] up!

You try to look so level headed in what you write but by talking about "hold backs" you are just as much an idiot. As if parents at the birth of their daughter think about holding them back for sports. If it makes you feel better to constantly convince the world that these kids are good because they are "holdbacks" get a life!

First off there are parents that know they are going to hold their kid back because they believe as I do that it gives their kid an advantage both academically and athletically. To act as if these kids would be just as successful if they played on age is just ignorant ,then why have age divisions at all. It really does not come from any jealousy at all I just think that the playing field should be equal as in most other sports where teams are based on age and not grade. For all I know college coaches do consider age but that seems doubtful . As far as the Florida kid good for her as it is my understanding that Cuse was really the only school she wanted to go to but lets not pretend she is the creates player in her age group because of it.

Just not sure why you all care so much? (and don't even try and say you are concerned for the other girls or you will sound so foolish) It's like everything else in life. We fixate more on the 1%. So much attention given to something that affects <1% - it's like that in everything. This has nothing to do with 99.9% of the world and here we make it a major topic of discussion. No one will admit it is because of jealousy because you actually believe you aren't jealous. Well, hate to break it to you but if you weren't jealous - no one would care about this one great kid AND... no one ever claimed she was the best - that, I suppose is another thing you have brought into your perception of the situation. Leave it alone!

Assuming this is accurate, would seem to prove the holdback discussion - not different school enrollment dates for different states. A 7th grader in 2014 would be an 8th grader in 2015 and a 9th grader in 2016 (this year).

Eighth-Grader Commits, Brings Recruiting Proposals to Light

Florida Select attacker , an eighth-grader at American Heritage School in Delray Beach, Fla., has verbally committed to play at Syracuse, according to Florida Lacrosse News. It's the earliest such commitment ever reported in men's or women's lacrosse, and comes at a time when college coaches are lobbying the NCAA to adopt legislation to stem early recruiting.

a member of the Sun Sentinel's All-Palm Beach team in 2014 as a seventh-grader, is the first player from her club team to commit to a college. She "is humbled and honored to play for the Orange and coach [Gary] Gait," she told FLN. She plans to major in communications and journalism.

Current NCAA recruiting rules say coaches can’t initiate communication with a prospective-student athlete until Sept 1. of his or her junior year of high school, but there is nothing stopping recruits from starting the process or from using third-party communication through a club or high school coach, for example. Those rules also don't apply to those too young to be classified as prospects by the NCAA definition of ninth-grade. (In men's basketball only, it's seventh-grade.)

Before current junior a goalie for Long Beach (N.Y.) High's varsity squad since seventh grade, was the earliest to commit to an NCAA Division I women's program. A member of the Yellow Jackets club, Reznick verbally committed to Florida on Aug. 20, 2014.

Similarly, this past July, just a few months shy of beginning his freshman year at Oakville Trafalgar High in Ontario, Canadian attackman became the earliest verbal commitment to an NCAA Division I men's lacrosse program – Virginia. The first freshman on record to make a verbal commitment to a Division I men's team was 6-foot-2 attackman Forry Smith, now a senior at The Haverford School (Pa.) who plans to attend Johns Hopkins next year.

Misses the point ... why do we all know about this early recruit? Has anyone asked this question? The school doesn't say anything about it. The coach can't say anything about it. How does it end up in the paper and all over the internet? Think about it. This is not about the kid. This is not about whether this decision is right or wrong for her. This is always about the parents. And their egos. It has zero to do with this young lady. Some criticizing is probably out of jealousy. Some is also probably pretty rational. None of it is directed at the child. All of it rightfully should be directed at the parent. If you think the decision to commit this young is ok, fine, it's your opinion. But if you think it should be known to the world, I think you are part of the problem.

cmon', why in the world would a parent NOT want the world to know about something so special? If she was accepted to Medical School as 8th grader, we would be shouting from the rooftops...

Agreed but academically gifted and holding a player back for athletics are very different. One has worked really hard or been born with a genius intellect, the other has made a choice to hold a child back to play against weaker and younger competition to gain an edge even though its legal I think most agree its stinks

Yeah, very similar. Unfortunately our culture these days probably does equate girl's lax w medical school. Here's hoping you were being sarcastic.

My daughter has gone to school with this player since kindergarten when she moved to Florida. She has never been held back as they went to a small private school and believe me everyone would know-gossip central. She also played Recreation lax with her which they all started together in kindergarten as her dad was thier coach. So there was no hold back to make her older for sports ...I happen to agree it is crazy to keep a kid back in 7-8-9th grade to get ahead in sports...this is crazy(again my opinion-I know others feel different). So she may have started school late but with no knowledge of Athletics in the decision. Not this is going to change the topic here of early commit...but it sure wasn't a planned event on a hold back in 6th grade.

I hope she does well, as I hope all the kids with dreams of playing college lax at any level do well...it is great accomplishment to all these kids I see today with time management .....have no idea how they do it all....I sure couldn't do it.

I don't understand the passion of some posters defending the situation. Virtually every respected DI women's coach has signed on to the proposal submitted to the NCAA to stop early recruiting. The coach's themselves think it is wrong/bad/not in player's best interest. The coaches do it b/c their competition does it - but most know it is wrong (and most are against early recruiting). So to be critical of early recruiting (for this girl or otherwise) is the position of the overwhelming majority of people that care about lacrosse. And I don't need to walk in someone's shoes to judge them - if I see a kid in a car that isn't in a car seat, I judge the parents as being irresponsible. If I see a toddler drinking Coke, I judge the parents as being irresponsible. There is no reason that rational people can't likewise judge this family as perhaps being irresponsible when it comes to the best interests of their daughter. And I know I don't have all the facts, but I think if it was my daughter I would just wait a year and she could commit in 9th grade and, while early, my daughter wouldn't become a national story (and this girl is not a national story in a good way).

And she is only a national story because Dad wanted her to be. Otherwise noone would know about it.

When I see a parent slinging mud on the internet, I judge the parents as being jealous.

You just said it yourself so clearly. You are exceptionally judgmental! You see, I would never judge someone because their kid has a coke! I would never agree that a child should not be in a car seat but I would never rush to judgement! People are not as perfect as you and you have made it clear that your standards are correct and anything you disagree with you judge. NOT THEY WAY I RAISE MY KIDS!
No one is saying there is anything wrong with the NCAA making changes. But until they do, who are we to point fingers at families and kids who have been given tremendous opportunities. So sick of people judging others on perceptions that you place on them. Stop playing God! You tell me what good comes of hurtful slander on this website directed clearly to a child who has been given a tremendous opportunity! Get over yourself. So who would defend this family against such attacks? GOOD PEOPLE!

You see, you are the poster child for the "everything and anything goes" type of mentality that is so pervasive in our society today. You're so concerned about being PC, you've lost all sense of right and wrong. Some things are just wrong, period. Not putting a baby in a car seat, that's wrong, plain and simple. No judgment needed. It's wrong. As for a child, who was playing with dolls and drawing with chalk on her driveway 6 months ago committing to a University to play a game 5 years from now, only time will tell if that was right or wrong. However, if lax wasn't in the equation, who among us would have our middle school child pick a college????? Who among us would give any credence to that choice if lax was not in the equation? Would it not be dismissed as a child's gibberish?

Don't get your point. Lax is in the picture and so is a very large scholarship which most of us likely can not relate to. Very early commits are tempted with substantial offers that may not be there in a year or two. The early recruiting system is extreme and needs to be changed, everyone agrees with that but who are we to say that a parent is not able to help their daughter navigate through the process and make a very informed decision on whether to accept a scholarship or not.

Take this case out of it because maybe it wasn't a true holdback but there are TONS of real holdbacks by parents who want their kid to have a competitive athletic edge and because us lax is spineless and club lax to powerful this is allowed. 99.9% of parents think those parents are insane. Lax is a game. Get them a tutor and set them up for life, not lax

This tread gets better and better....the self righteousness is great. Change is coming (for the better), right now the girl and her family are still playing by the rules. It is a family decision get over it already.

Why do we care so much? PRECEDENCE. The child (and make no mistake, she is still a child) is in 8th grade. When should we care? When they recruit the first 7th grader? Maybe 6th? Why not a "physically/athletically gifted 5th grader with a genetic pedigree ..."

The problem is the line keeps getting moved. So as a parent, yeah you should care. Cause at some point, it isn't about kids being kids it's about ADULTS making choices to further THEIR BEST INTERESTS.

This is a verbal commitment, what is the worst that can happen? She changes her mind senior year and goes somewhere else? Or she doesn't pan out to be the player they hoped for and rides the bench. Seriously, why would you care. Bad parenting? You gotta be kidding. Worry about your own kid,

Are you nuts? Parents (who generally pay) push their kids to different schools for different reasons all of the time. I know mine did and I plan it for my kid. How many kids are brainwashed to go to their parents alma mater or Notre Dame by some subway alumni. You don't think it furthers their interests when they push them to a state school when they should be somewhere they like better but is more expensive.

Come on Mr/Mrs Purity, stop it already.

Will someone who is defending the decision to have an 8th grader commit to college please also defend the parents publicizing it?

Over a four year span here is an example of how the 12.6 could be divided.

12.6 split evenly over 4 years = 3.15 per year.

Top recruit gets .75

Number 2 recruit gets .5

number 3, 4, 5 get .3 each.

number 6, 7, 8 get .25 each.

9, 10. 11, 12 get zero.

.75 + .5 + .3 +.3 +.3 +.25 +.25 +.25 +.25 = 3.15 per year x 4 = 12.6

The coach can split it up any way they want. I don't think more than 30 players can be on athletic scholarship.

Bottom line: the top recruits get a lot more money.

Agreed that the recruiting process needs to change. However, the change will come from those doing the recruiting, not the players/parents. I believe it is unrealistic to ask one family to make a stand and refuse an early offer, when there will be 25 other families lined up behind them to take that place.

It might take the NCAA a while to institute the change, but that doesn't stop athletic leagus/conferences from making their own rules. For instance, the Ivy League agreed as a group to NOT offer athletic scholarships, even though they could have under NCAA guidelines. Why can't the Ivy League, Big10, ECAC, etc. agree NOT to have any contact with recruits until 9/1 junior year?

I wouldn't always equate verbal commitment with big scholarship money. Plenty of parents can and will write a check and are just looking to secure a spot - if youre attending a private school in Maryland or florida and paying 30K year I don't think college tuition is an issue. PS, mom and dad always drive the bus

No one defending the ridiculously early commit to college has defended why we all know about this early commit. Anyone want to step and defend the parent making this public and subjecting their daughter to this spotlight?

I think it's flattering to have an offer as an 8th grader. However we are talking about Syracuse. It's a mediocre academic institution with a good lacrosse program. If it was my daughter and we had an offer to Hopkins or Duke, I would seriously consider because those are reach schools for most top students. Average kids are admitted to Cuse, and I would want my daughter to strive for more. As a HS Sophomore or Jr. one would have a better idea if that would be the right academic fit. Why would you preselect a mediocre path for a 13 year old?

Big Time lax school with a $58 thousand price tag. Solid A for athletics, solid B for academics. If lacrosse is your thing its a top 5 program where you will compete for a national championship every year which disqualifies about 99.9999% of all other players.

Problem is, you may selling your 8th grader short by allow him/her to commit to a school that is academically beneath them. The will rise or fall to expectations. Sad that a parent would chose lacrosse over academics for an 8th grader! And FYI: a Nat Championship does not pay the bills!

One more FYI: Syracuse girls have NEVER won a Nat Championship, so good luck with that! Not a reason to sell your kid out on either level! Pretty much just bad parenting! Now come Jr. year, and your kid is a mediocre student, but good lax player, that would be the time to commit to a school like Cuse.

I do not know the girl, but I think she will be ok in life post college. It seems like she is a quality kid from a strong family, and obviously a fantastic lax player.

I think she will be ok in life with that 'Cuse degree. In my opinion, it is what the kid puts into college more than the name of the college.

I am sure her parents are wringing their hands with their decision after all the expert posts on BOC. If we only had a website to critique everyones parenting decisions.

Good luck to the girl in college and lets hope she doesn't become homeless post grad because of her poor academic choice in colleges.

Out... I am taking the family out to dinner!

My respect for some of the posters on here has fallen to a new low - really, talking about ISIS and this kid??? [lacrosse]. Kudos to the poster that understands kids get out of college what they put into it. Further, for the poster who knocked SU, have you ever heard of the Newhouse School of Communications? SU has some top academic programs. I know people that have graduated from Ivy Leagues and are not very successful and I know people who have not even attended college and are highly successful. Get a life and move on.

Still a mediocre school. Sure some have made the most out of certain programs. Overall, there are much higher aspirations I would want for my kids, that is if they are capable of course, which I would not know when they are THIRTEEN! Like I said before kids will rise or fall to expectations. If they know they don't need to work hard the next 4 yrs, they wont. Commit to Hopkins, I'm all for it and impressed!

Every one of you posters knocking her family , if it were your kid you would run out to LU and don every Syracuse hoodie and hat they had and wear it everywhere including Church . Btw that's where some of you should spend some more time . How bout maybe that is her dream school ? Let's move on.

Syracuse has yet to win anything. If you're looking for a championship you go to Maryland. Hopkins has great lacrosse plus a top notch education, which is much more important.

Nope, nice try.

No obligation in any way to make a verbal commitment public. No obligation to give quotes to the newspaper. Just parental ego creating this situation for their daughter.

Any child in any sport (not just lacrosse) if they are the top player or the top handful of players in the country will get walked into 98% of schools because if you can write your name coaches can get you in so I am sure there were tons of offers. Congratulations, it's still insane, but congratulations.

Why would anyone be jealous of an 8th grader commiting to a school that may be beneath her. Seems like they just want attention for being the "earliest" commit. They got it. Don't sell your kid short is the lesson I see here.

"Tons of offers" , you are an idiot. Cant wait to see the little bio on inside lacrosse, other schools considered, "none". The kid only wanted to go to Cuse so good for her. The reasons why that is the case are none of anyones business and as far as academics are concerned settle down she could have done a lot worse and who knows maybe her parents own a lucrative business that she is going into after graduation.

Yesterday, the Syracuse Orange women's lacrosse program received a verbal commitment from DELETED is a Florida Select attack and currently attends American Heritage School. She's in eighth grade.

She "is humbled and honored to play for the Orange and coach [Gary] Gait," she told FLN. She plans to major in communications and journalism.

Yeah, this 8th grader uses words like humbled ... sure. Why is the newspaper approaching her? How could they possibly know?

We are hammering these parents, the school and kid for this release. Does any YJ parents actually know this family/parents from when played here? Maybe there is good reason this was released? I looked back and there was a lengthy discussion on this before on this site. Don't forget he coaches a team of 2018 which are actively being recruited now and going on non official visits which if you know anything about recruiting the coach sets up for the players- or set ups the first contact. Are we all stupid enough to think college coaches calling this father weren't also asking about his daughter? Maybe they was forced to come clean on this or flat out lie to college coaches and jeopardize the program's ethics and integrity, as well as the 2018 chances with a college......again the facts might show there was other things going on.

This is why I ask if people know these parents up here who played with YJ. Were they not nice, or had big egos...

I have met the parents thru YJ parents and they are very nice people. That said the kid lives in Florida but played on a team out of Long Island because that team was and is considered probably the best team in the age group, so yes they have big egos. Most parents on that team have big egos. Kid was top 10 player on that team ,probably not top 5 .Her dream was to go to Cuse, so good for her, and the reason the commit was announced probably more about ego than anything but that is the reason all these things are announced.

This is exactly the situation. I know the parents and the girl. Very nice people and a great kid. As the coach of their 2018 travel team being contacted by college coaches about his players he had to be honest about his daughter and her situation. This was not an ego play at all. This family would have preferred not to have shared this news publicly. It actually took months for the news to get out. Sorry folks your claims and attacks are once again very unfounded.

OK, fair point. But, we do not know (at least I) do not know that the parents were actively making this "public".

I think the driving force behind the madness known as youth sports (especially lacrosse on Long Island) are the parents of "average" athletes. Many times their first dose of reality comes when the recruiting starts. Not all of the players on the best Club or HS team are "Top Players / Recruits". When parents see the top players being recruited by the top academic and lacrosse schools in the country and their child is not being recruited they don't understand. Over the years I have witnessed jealousy and bitterness rear its ugly many times. Altering the rules regarding recruiting will not end the animosity directed toward the top players and their parents.

The Top Programs in the country are the ones doing most of the early recruiting. They Identify and go after (recruit) the best players. It will not change, the players who are recognized by college coaches to have the most potential will be offered spots and scholarships before all the others. To carry on about one 8th grade girl is insane. Even 9th grade, how many will be offered spots? I would bet less than 50. Yet this has caused such a stir. Really, sad for the girl because she has committed to Syracuse. Get a grip and give it a rest, it's a good school. Most parents have a pretty good Idea what type of student their child is. Most can help guide them during the process.

Here are the Top 8 Teams from 2015:

Maryland
North Carolina
Syracuse
Duke
Northwestern
Penn State
Princeton
Loyola

Do you think that most parents can not counsel their child during the recruiting process.

Here are the remaining top 20:

Boston College
Virginia
Stony Brook
Florida
Penn
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Stanford
Johns Hopkins
Louisville
Albany
JMU

The top 20 - 30 players will be recruited early by just about all of the top programs. They will be offered spots and they will be offered the most athletic money from those programs.

If a player is recruited early by the majority of the best programs in the country I am pretty sure that most parents will help their child find the right fit.

Worry about your own kid.

Do you actually have a clue when it comes to the recruiting process? Do you think the Northwestern Coach is going to come to New [lacrosse] during her lacrosse season and scout prospects at an actual high school game? Or have her assistants do this in the heat of their season? Not a shot bone head.

The business of youth sports has perpetuated by the needs of how to get a child in front of a college coach. Period. Travel clubs evolved out of this need because events such as the IWLCA Showcase events(outside of college seasons) allow club teams the access to play in front of college coaches. These college coaches can come for one weekend and watch over 500 travel teams around the nation play against each other. If you think that your daughter is really that good and you think a college coach will come after her without her going to any such showcase events or college camps that will PUT HER IN FRONT OF THE COACHES you ARE delusional. College coaches want to see game speed and field development and they want to see them at their camps so they have the ability to work with them and see if they are coachable, skilled and also make sure the parents are not psycho like 90 percent of the posters on here.

Has the club circuit got out of hand? probably but it has evolved from the top down.

Before you open your mouth ...open a book. That goes for the majority of these idiots that have instigated this post. Good luck to this family and lacrosse player! Celebrate the talent because this is exceptional and I wish her the best of luck!

Please ,get over yourself.First his daughters situation is none of the other college coaches business unless he makes it their business.Second, lets not pretend that so many college coaches were so anxious to find out the status of a descent 2020 player.Third its comments like yours that get people to write things that may not seem so kind. Please explain how other college coaches not knowing the status of this 2020 negatively impacts other kids on the team. Stop making up excuses and just say they are proud of their daughters commitment , have a bit of an ego, like the idea that she is the first 2020 commit ,wanted to shout it from the rooftops but now may regret it a little due to the backlash.

-- NCAA Division I men's Lacrosse teams have an average roster size of 45 players but only a maximum of 12.6 scholarships to award per team. This means that the average award covers less than 30% of a typical athlete's annual college costs. Lacrosse is an equivalency sport for NCAA limits, so partial scholarships can be awarded (up to 30 per team in NCAA I) as long as the combined equivalent awards do not exceed the limit. For example, an NCAA Division I school can award 24 women lacrosse players each a 1/2 scholarship and still meet the limit of 12 per team. For more information see our page on --

It appears that a maximum of 30 players can be on athletic scholarship.

The top recruits (#1 & #2 for the class) get a lot more money than the others. Some athletes get need based aid and some get merit scholarship some combine athletic and merit (they do not combine need and athletic) some kids pay full tuition.

A player who is not offered a spot at a top program may still get a large scholarship / financial package from a less competitive program. I very strong student will get significant merit based money from a less competitive academic school.

Every situation is different and everyone can find a good fit. However, the one constant is that the top programs will recruit the top talent as early as possible. The coaches at the top programs drive the process.

If she were that good a player nobody would be as surprised as they are and everyone on long island would know her. there are several other kids in the age group that are better known and wouldn't have surprised anyone by committing so early. that's the crux of the story, pun intended!

Believe me this kid is not the only 2020 that has been "approached" by a college. She's just the only one that has ended up on BOTC. Some parents keep their mouths shut about the things that are happening, wisely so I may add!

So the post on this girl being not good enough and nobody even knew her is extremely funny based on the fact that her parents supposedly have HUGE egos...a little contrary to the statement that no one knew her, except of course some major college coaches.( let's not forget she did make the toughest team in the country to make in 2020 bracket). Also my daughter has played against this YJ team that she used to be on. They are so good that I would almost guarantee every kid goes to a top D1 program...they are that good.

With that said are you saying that if this kid was from here in LI and was known to YOU it would be ok? No big ego parents? Maybe you should Check your ego....I think the many post about people being jealous was just verified...

You understand that the top players just a few short years ago were not committing until junior year or later, right? No one is arguing (at least not me) that these girls don't deserve to be the first recruited. And I have been through this process before and I coach, and agree with you that many parents are unrealistic and there is plenty of toxicity on sidelines etc. The fact remains that there is no reason to have girls this young being committed to colleges. It isn't just one, it is systematic and it's a shame.

My daughter plays with The Florida 2018 team that this girl is on. Let's make sure we have it straight. It was a post on the teams facebook page that was picked up by a news agency. (to be honest up until this piont the teams Facebook page had very little visitors -sadly)-LOL)The parents didn't call the newspaper or any other source. The girls on the team knew this already. What made it public is non official visit players telling other recruits at schools when they were visiting. In addition to having to tell college coaches she was committed-contrary to other post you can't lie to college coaches or any other person in life when asked a question-not very ethical. Sometimes it is better to control information than to let it leak out with inaccurate information.

Time to move on....a week of this junk is enough.

When my current college sophomore committed in February of her junior year, she was roughly number 450 or so listed on an online database. There are currently 230 sophomores listed on that same database as committed. Yes, things have sped up significantly in a very short amount of time. For my older daughter, we were astounded when someone on her club team committed in fall of her sophomore year to a top school, as she was the first that we had heard of.
You are correct, there is no reason. But you have to play the game the college coaches play, and if they are recruiting early, you need to go along with it or they will move along to the next "great" girl. It needs to stop at THAT level.

gotcha. so the quote in the paper was made up. It is not time to move on from this subject. This exact subject is what is ruining kids sports. And yes it is driven by the very coaches who are basically saying save us from ourselves. But it is the children that are in the crosshairs. And no one cares about your children more than you, the parents. So stop the nonsense and take back control. The very parents that have the control are the ones with the most talented players. They actually can demand to wait. If the very top players said, no we're going to wait, the whole process would slow down. Coaches would wait to keep money available and things could start inching back the other way. So yes, it is an important subject to challenge these great players and their families to be a part of the solution, not the problem. They are the only ones other than the coaches that actually have control over the process.

Yes, I do understand that just a few short years ago kids were not committing until junior year or later. However, I also understand that it is the college coaches who have become more aggressive in their recruiting efforts. Actions speak louder than words. All the coaches have to to is stop.

Please do not tell me that you do not see the jealousy, bitterness, animosity and ignorance on display as a major issue. Read what is written on this site, listen to what is said on the sidelines and in your community. It is sickening and saddening at the same time. At every turn the jealous parents try to diminish the accomplishments of any player other than their own. In their next breath the parent will spin. embellish and lie about their own daughters situation. Do not believe for a second that they (jealous parents) want the recruiting rules changed for the good of society. They want it changed because they think pushing it back will help their child. Reality is that it will only prolong their delusion.

Finally a great post on recruiting. The NCAA needs to create a "speed limit" on this...don't blame parents, coaches and players. They all are playing by th rules in a potential high dollar business for families that do not have tons of money.

Once rules in place it will be cleaned up...but the next 6 months before rule goes into place on 9/1 it could be a mad race to the finish and to verbally comitt...time will tell.

Let me make sure that I understand what you are saying.

If a girl is offered admission and or a large scholarship to a school that the girl and her parents think is an all around great fit they should tell the coach no thanks I am going to wait. Is that what you are suggesting?

Tell Maryland, North Carolina, Syracuse, Northwestern, Penn State, Penn, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, USC, Boston College, Virginia, Georgetown etc... No thanks. Through in Duke and Notre Dame, Cornell, Darthmouth, Michigan etc.. they are months, not years behind the others. Yeah, that sounds like good advise.

Every player and family are in a unique situation and most parents have the ability to help guide their child. The best players will have their choice of the best schools. There is no "perfect" time to commit.

Time to move on....a week of this junk is enough.

gotcha. so the quote in the paper was made up.

There is no "perfect" time to commit.

you got it! the best 20 players in the country is control. The money will still be there. In fact the schools will wait until they r ready before they go to the next tier. Yup, you the parent of that top 20 kid is actually in control.

The recruiting process is killing the game except for those who are getting recruited. Girls have stopped passing the ball in 4th and 5th grade because they are gearing up to sign in 8th grade. Its great for the few kids that sign but sucks for their teams and everyone else who still wants to play. this is an undeniable fact

Totally agree. I grew up playing basketball at a first rate high school with great coaches. I instilled in my daughter a pass first mentality, move the ball and go to the cage without the ball and it will find you eventually - don't try to run through people - especially if it's more than one. Was I wrong! High school is now an afterthought and the kids and their families rely more on the club coaches than their school coaches.

This is really just an exaggeration and ridiculous. Yes, there are issues with early recruiting and the IWCLA is working to resolve them hopefully via the NCAA. However, to say 4th and 5th grade girls are gearing up to get recruited and don;t pass as a result? Do you have 4th and 5th graders? Are they really focused on getting recruited right now? Mine aren't. Thye love to play but care more about their friends and watching Child Genious rather than college recruiting. Now by 8th grade, I agree it becomes more of a focus/issue for the girls, but not 4th and 5th grade.

my 5th grader already has her top 5 picked. as long as her academics and lax continue on the path they are on, she's got a great shot. Goals and hard work are important is what I preach to her.

I have an elementary and middle school player. While I agree with the view that they aren't concerned about being recruited at that age, they have always had teammates who, at the encouragement of mom/ dad detest the idea of sharing the ball. The irony of the whole thing is that while they may get the accolades for goals they aren't necessarily the most popular teammate. Kids at this age want to be part of the game, not standing by while one or two girls who aren't always the most talented hold the ball. This is a result of misguided parents with scholarship $$$ in their eyes rather than the recruiting process itself

Wait until you are playing with kids who have older sisters that have already gone through the process. Kids used to play club in 9th grade, then it went to 6th, now there are teams for 1st and 2nd graders. The club parents are pushing their younger children earlier so yes PAL and 6th lacrosse has changed from a team sport to an individual sport for some with an eye on giving that "verbal". If you cant see the changes its probably because this is your first daughter. The changes are bad for the 95% of kids that just want to play!

My daughter is committed to a top 15 lacrosse program and top 5 academic school. She committed in early October of her sophomore year and had several offers from top 20 lacrosse programs/top academic schools. She is very fortunate and she understands this. We have very mixed feelings about early recruiting but it is hard to turn down her dream school and we would not have let her commit at this age to many schools. However, this was a unique opportunity with a scholarship as well. She was not the top goal scorer and does pass a lot, contrary to the notion on this thread that you get rewarded for not passing and being a ball hog. My observation of the top girls being recruited is that the biggest common denominator is top level athleticism and speed. This could come through on draw controls, ground balls, redefending, defense, and general grit and hustle. It doesn't have to be goals.

Actually my 3rd daughter. I didn't say I can't see the changes getting earlier and earlier in terms of recruiting. I just said I think it is a ridiculous exaggeration that 4th/5th/6th grade girls are consumed with being recruited.

Typical Stanford jerk. Always using any opportunity to let everyone know that they/their kid went/goes/going to Stanford. Funny thing about it is that they will likely be bottom quartile student there, and might do much better academically somewhere that isn't Stanford.

Gee let me tell them that it's a top 15 lax school. Now lets cross-reference it with top 5 academic school. Oh gosh they might think I'm talking about Princeton. Let me make sure to tell them she's getting a scholarship so they know it's not an Ivy. There, that should do it.

At the end of the day it is all about coaches and league rules, especially at the early ages. Whatever happen to the 3 pass rule before a team could shoot. That forced kids to pass. It made them all of them better. And it wasn't three passes to two good players, three passes to different kids. Maybe this should be a US lacrosse rule in youth. It would be nice if they actually did something with there title, "As governing body"

This is what I grew up with and it amazing how good the team was when you start this young forcing the pass.

Get back to basics for majority. You will always have a few kids that are clearly better than others. This is life, and will get picked first,by schools. Also true for academics.

Good Post - What the governing body better remember is 95% or more of these kids don't play in college but do love the game and can be ambassadors of it. I loved baseball, still play softball in a fat guy beer league, still watch it on TV and I was a mid level player but my team always let me hit and play the field. Make the next Shannon's of the world pass the ball because only her parents care that her name is in Newsday and if you watch the college playoffs on TV nobody cares anymore except the parents and the handful of new commits. Attendance is down by well over 50% over the last 5 years. Coincidence? Probably not. 8th grade commits, endless worrying about giving the verbal. Me first play. Toxic parent sideline and the list goes on.

Nope, nice try. Not the least bit jealous. Just so sick of people like you. You write a post ostensibly about your "mixed feelings" about early recruiting, but all it really is is a post you have written to brag about your daughter. Right down to how unbelievably unselfish and athletic she is. You indeed are a jerk.

My kid rejected Stanford so she wouldn't have to deal with the likes of you and your daughter.

To be honest, you are responding to someone else who wrote "typical jealous jerk". I wrote the original post, was not trying to chest-pound at all, do indeed have mixed feelings about early recruiting, and was just trying to add perspective from my experience of what coaches look for (not always ball hogs, goal scorers which was the original post). Was actually just trying to provide some experiences to the tread which is what I thought this forum was about, rather than really, really angry posts like yours. Done here. You should direct your anger somewhere else.

95% of your original post had nothing to do with perspective on an issue and everything to do with you needing an outlet to let us all know that you have a daughter "committed to a top 15 lacrosse program and top 5 academic school... Wow, how resentful, jealous and bitter can you be? Very sad to hear that you have passed on your small minded hateful mentality to your daughter. What other schools did you convince your daughter to reject? What school did your daughter decide to attend? It must be difficult getting through the day with such a closed mind. Good luck to your daughter. I hope she is able to broaden her views and develop an open mind. Maybe she will someday reject your limiting angry narrow mindset.

By the way, I have never been to Stanford, I do not know any current Stanford Students, I do not know any Stanford Graduates and none of my children are going to attend Stanford. I wish the girl and her proud family well.

Go Cardinal!

Speaking for the 95% of girls who don't play in college congratulations to all that do! Hopefully the recruiting system is actually going to be fixed this time (but I really don't think the coaches and the club teams want it changed) so the rest of the girls can go back to enjoying this fun game with their teammates. Early recruiting has sucked the air out of the game and the parent sidelines way too early. For those on the route to play in college, every decision from PAL on is very calculated and selfish and those decisions bleed into the teams.

Typical jealous jerk.

Ok Mom

This kid is now listed as a 2019 on Salt City Snipers roster. I guess she really wasn't the youngest to commit . Why wasn't this clarified from the beginning with all the press she got? It's basically not true. Now she has to play with her real grade 2019 because of the new rules.

What a stupid post you MORON.If you read through the previous post she has always played up. She is a freshmen-2020. Before she did YJ 2020 she played 2018 Florida Select. She has played up with Snipers 2019 for a year and half now as the family goes to Upstate in summer. We played against the Snipers/her in Championship game this summer with the 2019 YJ I think at it was National Draw-she played well. Based on your post you have never seen her play.

Most people will tell you playing up will always make you better. Please get your facts straight before posting this in accurate info and again taking a shot at a young girl.

Happy New Year and Hope everyone has a great lax season in 2017.

Looks like playing down makes you better. Based on the previous posts it appears to be a hold back situatiion. Looks like the new US lax age rule for tourneys has taken effect. Playing up on a Florida select team doesn't really say much btw.

The Jealousy, bitterness and hate displayed by so many on this site, on the sidelines and in certain communities never ceases to amaze me. What does amaze me is that there are people out there who teach their children to embrace mediocracy.

- No Jane, don't go to UNC to play lacrosse they're too good down there. Lets look at schools that have average players so you can be the best. No Jane, don't go to Princeton the kids are too smart there. Lets select a school that has average students so you can be the smartest.

I hope your child/children can overcome your small minded negative influence.

And so that guy obviously nailed it. This was, as usual, a blatant attempt by a parent living through their child to tell everyone that she is going to Stanford. It's funny. Great piece of duduction. And now the self-rightous indignation that follows. It is u, Cardinal parent, that is the one to be loathed. And no it isn't jealousy or bitterness. I find you hysterical, thanks for the laugh. For all you know, my kid is committed right along side yours, but I don't have to broadcast it to the world. Lets hope your kid has the humility that you do not possess. Or at least is a bit more secure?

Didn't read it that way at all. I think the person was trying to point out that it's not all about scoring goals. This is an anonymous forum, if the person wanted to boast about whatever school their child is going to why not just say it. No, I think think they were pointing out that players can get recruited by top programs/schools without being a ball hog.

The best player on my daughters club/HS team had offers from just about every Top 10 Team. Even the most bitter of parents do not call her a ball hog. The Top College coaches like her because of her athleticism, speed, grit and hustle. She can play any position on the field and she moves better than the other girls. Thats it.

Congrats to the girl and her parents if she is going to Stanford.

The thing that is laughable is this mind set: "Funny thing about it is that they will likely be bottom quartile student there, and might do much better academically somewhere that isn't Stanford. - Really? Is that how you look at life? Do you really think that doing well against lesser competition is "doing better"?

The fact that you admit to loathing is very telling. Highly doubt that your daughter will be going to stanford. I hope that you have not passed on your bitterness and hate to your children.

I don't think that the original poster was broadcasting to the world where their daughter was going to school. I think they were trying to explain college coaches look beyond the ball hog.

Way to respond to your own post.
If you were trying to show a lax point about it not being all about scoring goals, why state "a top 5 academic school." Last I checked that didn't have much to do with lacrosse. And of course you need to tell us when she committed, just to make sure we don't assume she is a back of the roster kid for heavens sake ... Not to mention that other top 20 AND top academic schools were drooling over her ... Such mixed feelings of course but after all it's her DREAM school ... Translated ... It's mommy and daddy's dream to tell everyone my girl is going to Stanford.
Not bitter at all. I find it funny that you don't think any other kid can measure up to your Super Suzy is sooo smart, and soooo talented and sooo unselfish. What a peach. Why would you "highly doubt that my daughter will be going to Stanford?" She has an offer from there Ms High and Mighty. She so far has concluded that the girls committed there aren't exactly her cup of tea. I would have to say quite the same about the parents. You being Example "A".

Sorry, not the original poster. Responding to your post not my own.

You are so bitter that you can not even see it. Your negative resentful attitude shows through in all that you write. Love the way that you paint with such a broad brush regarding the girls committed to Stanford and their parents. I didn't realize they are all one and the same. Bravo to you if your daughter has the same myopic self limiting views as you. You have done a wonderful job as a parent. What went wrong in your life?

No, my daughter is not committed to Stanford nor was she recruited or offered a spot and or scholarship there.

Congratulations to your daughter, she must be a great student and one [lacrosse] of a lacrosse player if Stanford is offering. Shame on you if your bitterness prohibits you from offering sound counsel. Yes, I know Stanford is not the only game in town and I realize that it is not a good fit for everyone. However, I would hate to see someone not give careful consideration due to limiting thoughts or preconceived notions.

Some say the sport/sideline has become toxic. I would say that many toxic parents have found a nesting place. Avoid them as if they had the plague.

I truly feel for the children of such bitter resentful parents. Life can be challenging enough without the dead weight of negative influences.

Couldn't disagree more. And no, none of my kid will be going to stanford (they were not recruited by stanford).

Below was posted on another thread. Applies to this group as well.

The problem is that many parents refuse to honestly evaluate their children. Many become bitter and jealous and spew venom and hate at other children. They do it on this site, they do it on the sideline and they do it around town. When another child is having more success than their child they look to tear that child down anyway they can. Its ugly.

If the kid scores a lot of goals the jealous parents will call the player a "Ball Hog".

If the kid makes an "All Star / Elite / Top Club" team the bitter parents will say its only because his/her Dad knows the coaches.

If the kid commits to a Top 5 or 10 college the jealous parent will say the player will never get on the field.

If the kid commits to Harvard the bitter jealous parent will say my son/daughter doesn't want to go to an Ivy League School (or Stanford).

If the kid commits to a Big D-I School the jealous parents will say we are focusing on academics and looking at D-III schools.

If a kid is being actively recruited by a number of top programs the bitter jealous parents will say we are looking at ABC and XYZ and we visited XXX even though their kid is not being recruited by those schools.

It's never ending, on our sideline this past spring it was obvious that parent were rooting against their daughters teamates. We have parents chirping loudly "Pass The Ball" however I never heard those words when the Jealous bitter parents child had the ball. If it were not so sad it would be funny.

Couple all of the hate and venom spewed with all of the [lacrosse] Kissing many of these parents do and you have a cesspool of a sideline. Does not matter if it is school or club, the [lacrosse] kissers are there. They will kiss the [lacrosse] of the coach, Club Director, AD, Assistant Coach, Spouse of the coach, Sibling of the coach, friend of the coach, anyone who they think can help. Have you ever noticed how certain parents always have a reason to talk to or email the coach? Even the ones who are bitter on the sideline, they make sure they put on the happy face just before their nose hits the coaches [lacrosse]. Love it when I see a kid who does not get the hype from the club or school get recruited (by top college programs) over the favored ones. All the [lacrosse] kissing from parents and the misguided efforts of a bad coach will not stop the college coaches from identifying the top athletes.

It's a mess. Hope your club and or town is different".

Hope your club and or town is different.

Being the devils advocate here....let's be honest. There are many girls with great connections who do receive benefits, recognitions, opportunities etc. that others who may be more deserving don't receive. Personal phone calls to college coaches before clinics, personal phone calls to coaches involved in major tryouts. They happen, everyone knows about them and those parents also don't honestly evaluate their daughters ability. Therefore the jealousy and bitterness may be created. Unfortunately, you hit the nail on the head when you said parents refuse to evaluate their kids honestly. Only problem is some don't have to because they know all!

If the kid commits to a Top 5 or 10 college the jealous parent will say the player will never get on the field.

amen. And this bitter a--hole who keeps trying to tear down a parent whose kid he thinks but really has no idea is going to Stanford - read the thread as the parent may have been talking about several schools including Duke sounds like exactly what you describe above. My read of the original poster was that they were actually trying to be helpful and share their experience. But no this asshat decided they must have been just bragging and the person must have been referring to Stanford. Just a lowlife, bitter, jealous negative human being just as you described and unfortunately we all know this type. They suck.

"My daughter is committed to a top 15 lacrosse program and top 5 academic school. It doesn't have to be goals."

Please. Read it again.

Go beat your dog or something else. You are a hater and a ball of negativity clearly. Focus your energy on someone else other than a blog posting at 12:12am, get a life and see if you can be positive once. It feels good.

Hope that you have not been successful at passing your negative attitude on to your children.

i totally agree with this! we had parents on the sidelines yelling dont shoot! as my daughter was mid swing about to score - she ended up being the leading scorer and had the most assists. these parents also had their daughter take secret private lessons with the varsity coach which is against our rules. someone caught them and told the AD.... nothing happened. that same girl was never ever subbed out , extreme favoritism.

7:23am is crazy? What planet are you from. Must be a real slacker in addition to a hater and a complete ball of negativity. Say something positive, I dare you. It might make you feel a little better about yourself.

Ok ... here's something positive. The girls that play high level, D1 lacrosse at great academic schools are awesome kids. Now reaffirm that, i dare you.

Funny I heard the kid was a holdback too. They shouldn't be out there touting the youngest commit ever if that's the case. Strange
