Was there some bias in favor of recruits? Very possibly. But this is not a perfect science. They are trying to win with the best team possible, not the 23 best players in the country.

I liken it to Bob Knight when he coached the 84 Olympic team. He cut guys like Stockton, Barkley and others in favor of Jon Koncack and Joe Klein. He also took his own player, Steve Alford, who was the youngest player and someone few expected to make it.

When asked about the guys cut and those who made it, Knight replied that he went with what would make the best TEAM.

I'm sure other coaches would have selected a different roster, perhaps wildly different. But obviously all of these kids can play and the coaches pick who they think can get the job done, right or wrong.

Accusing them of bias is just a waste of time.

12 out of the 30 kids picked are from three teams Ohio State, Penn State and U Penn. The coaches are from three schools Ohio State, Penn State and U Penn, 4 players from each of those schools were selected. That means only 18 players selectors from all the other schools. Coincidence??? This happens in all tryouts even at this level. They are all deserving players if you think there's no bias your nuts.

Ok, stop whining that your son was cut, the best kids at the tryout were picked to continue. If your son stood out,he would still be on the roster like the others that clearly did. Go back and watch the game, you will see. Some traditionally good kids had trouble standing out for whatever reason. Get over it!

My son did not try out. I'm simply making an observation based on the numbers. 40% of the kids selected were from those three teams. While they may all be deserving you can't dispute that the numbers suggests bias.

Look at it this way of those 40% of the kids that were selected from the top 30 only one of the schools finished 2015 in the top 25. If you look at 2015 recruiting classes only one team Ohio st. was in the top 10. Upenn and Penn st were much lower. There are biases at all levels. I rest my case. No sour grapes here just pointing out the facts. Interesting also is the fact that each of the coaches chose 4 of their own kids as well. Not 3 or 5 but 4 each .

Do you think if Tillman, Starsia or Danowski were coaching this team that they would only be two kids from Maryland Virginia and Duke........really now!!!! Same with North Carolina Notre Dame and Syracuse .....give me a break

This is the problem with Lacrosse. Its been going on for over 30 years. Politics ,Politics , and more Politics. The bottom line is anybody coaching these teams should not have a choice in picking the squad. Independent evaluators who have nothing to do with this team. Previous world players ex coaches anybody else who is not affiliated with the players.

It's only a problem when your kid isn't picked. The team will be just fine. There are always politics in sports, and there were not only 3 coaches picking the players, there was a whole expert committee consisting of HS coaches and other professionals. This sounds like the Under Armour [lacrosse] fest all over again. Who shouldn't be on this team based on their performance at the tryout according to you, who seems to know better than US Lacrosse ?

anybody who came up through the travel club circuit knows there are politics at a very early age. All of these Under Armour, Brine, LI All Americans etc are all tilted towards certain coaches and clubs.

You better be the best of the best otherwise you better hope you are aligned with the right people.

Just like life

That's absolutely true.....but when the players get to college accolades go out the window and the best players play. Winning is all that matters. If college coaches don't win they are looking for another job.

You need to learn how to read. That's not what I said (I was the one who said you guys are ridiculous for whining about the selection process).

The kids on this team are very good. Maybe there was a better combination of kids that would have produced a better team. Maybe not. Just sit back and chill out.

These are not necessarily the best players in the country. It is a team put together by three coaches who have a vested interest in working with their own players. The competition in this U-19 tournament is very weak by the way. There are at least 20 High School teams in NY/Ct/NJ that could win this event.

That is really funny! Have you seen Canada teams play? Like Hill Acadamy? If so you would not be making that statement. And most of the boys chosen have consistently been ranked top in their class for their positions. Check it out and you will see. You sound like a jealous hater and it's sad that you can't be happy for these boys.

Like you said most of the boys were tops. We are talking about the ones who werent but because they are attending the schools of the coaches players who are better and performed better at the tryouts will not get the chance to play.

Nothing you can do. If they win they will say we knew what we were doing. If they lose they will blame it on something.

How many Championships have these coaches won total between them ??

Which boys wouldn't be considered tops? By position. I watched the practices and believe all the boys picked performance justifys their being on roster. I feel like some people have sour grapes. If anything I think there were a few boys kept in the position of fogo and and attack that were not from these three schools that should have been cut based on performance.

I am not naming names and no one should. But you have 3 kids from the same HS. One did not tryout because of injury but still made it "different argument" but he was considered one of top in country all year so you can understand both sides of that argument but the other 2. One is in the group of 5 FOGO's which will be cut down when they go to 23 man roster so they can correct that mistake. He was a great player 2 years ago that leveled out and had a so so year because he was banged up but had less than average tryout. The other defensemen should not be there plain and simple. The only reason is because he is going to Ohio State. Plus the coaches want to open the door for more recruits from one of the top HS programs.

Aren't there bigger problems in the world to solve? Are you really that obsessed with which 30 boys were selected for a team?

If one of those selected couldn't catch or throw, I would understand your anger. But really - don't you have a life?

I agree with that. Only 1 from GC belongs. One got by because of coach, how did the other?

Past accomplishments not the tryout. But he will probably get alternate when the cut down to 23. You can't have 5 fogos on the roster

thank goodness you didn't name names or we would know who you were talking about but your code is impossible to break - but let me try, 3 kids from the same high school, one is a defensemen and he goes to Ohio State. I might need to find a wind talker to figure out who you mean -

Good that you are not "naming names"! Yeah right. Your post is nothing but sour grapes sprinkled with sufficient detail so people can readily figure out which kids you are talking about. After all, that is exactly what you intended, right? You are playing small ball, my friend. Stop acting like you are taking the high road with your so-called anonymous critique.

We all know that accolades on Long Island are just as political as people are saying, picking this team! I always wondered what is the criteria for being selected an All-County player, All Conference player, etc., on Long Island. Is there any set criteria or is it all based on what each HS coach wants to award his own player? If anyone knows where you can find the criteria, please let me know -thanks. With that being said, the only person who should have made this team that didn't was the Lynbrook defenseman! By the way, never met the kid just followed him during his high school career and watched the Blue-White game.

its all BS

I wouldn't say that. Many of the best ranked kids in the country are on this team. You will never make everyone happy, but cuts needed to be made and I believe for the most part they got it right.

4 commits from Ohio State (Head Coach of U19 Team), 4 from UPenn (Assistant Coach of U19 Team), 4 from Penn State (Assistant Coach of U19 Team), coincidence?

Looking at the original group of prospects and the cuts that were made, alleging bias is not prudent. Maybe, just maybe the final 30 are the players who meshed well. As we all know, there will always be naysayers, but trusting the process is acceptable.

Who said I wasn't happy for the boys. They will have a lot of fun. Just calling it like it is. The selection process was biased by the OSU PSU and Penn coaches. That said, I don't think it matters as the teams they play are weak and the players they selected will do just fine. Yes every once in a while Canada puts up some resistance, but the rest of the countries are nothing. Pick any good team from our area and they could win this tournament.

Some resistance? Didn't the U19's lose to Canada in 2012? Yes they grinded out the gold in the end, but that should have been an eye opener that Canada is more then resistance, especially since there are so many Canadian kids at so many top prep schools who are now being recruited for positions other than attack. Watch out for the Iroquois as well, since 2012 there has been a huge increase in kids going to prep schools and playing a lot more field lax. Plus they will have by far the two most talented players in the tournament.
