1. Smithtown East (2-0): Two games into the season and Brian Willetts already has 11 goals and four assists. Yes, really. The Bulls, who won the Suffolk Class A title last year, haven't missed a beat and passed a big test with a 12-10 win against Half Hollow Hills West. They're powered by not one, not two, but three faceoff specialists in Gerard Arceri, Steven Cuccurullo and Ryan Herber. The trio won 20 out of 23 faceoffs in the opener against East Islip.

2. Syosset (5-0): There may not be a better scoring duo than Alex Concannon (11 goals, 10 assists) and Mac O'Keefe (12 goals, five assists). Add in other key components like Mike Elardo, Michael Hatzopolos and Lucas Cotler and it's easy to see how the Braves have been able to beat perennial playoff contenders Garden City, Cold Spring Harbor, Farmingdale, South Side and Northport.

3. Massapequa (3-0): The defending Long Island Class AA champions are off to a better start than last year's team. For the first time in 10 seasons, the Chiefs defeated Chaminade in the teams' annual early-season battle. Ryan Tierney led the way in the 13-11 win with four goals.

4. St. Anthony's (0-0): The Friars will open the season Tuesday against Holy Trinity. Coach Keith Wieczorek said this year's attack unit could be the best the program has had "in at least five or six years." Senior attack Mike Laviano could have a big season after battling injuries the last two seasons.

5. Chaminade (1-1): The Flyers lost their opener to Massapequa but responded with an 8-5 win against West Islip behind breakout candidate Brendan Kearins' three goals and two assists.

6. Ward Melville (1-0): When Dan Bucaro, who is viewed by many as one of the country's best attacks, is on your team, it's easy to get overlooked. Jake McCulloch scored 36 goals last season and could score more this season. He had three goals in the opener against Sachem East.

7. Lynbrook (3-0): Ask any coach in Nassau if the Owls have enough to repeat as Class B champs and you'll likely get this answer: "Yes." Eddie Bouhall and Zach Barrett can cover all types of offensive players. The Owls' defense has allowed an average of six goals per game.

8. Garden City (2-1): After giving Syosset a good fight (the Trojans lost, 9-7, in the opener for both teams), Garden City responded with a very good win against a talented St. Paul's team from Maryland. The Trojans are young on offense, but they're mighty talented.

9. Smithtown West (2-0): Jimmy Caddigan is poised for a breakout season after being a role player on last year's team. He has six goals and three assists already. Many predicted the team to have a down season, but the Bulls got a big win over Half Hollow Hills West.

10. Sachem North (3-0): The Flaming Arrows have arguably the best goalie on Long Island in Jacob Giacalone. Sophomore James Avanzato, who is verbally committed to Maryland, is off to a hot start with four goals and eight assists. The team's first real test is Wednesday against Ward Melville.

Syosset came very close to losing to Port today who isn't even ranked. Alot of movement can be expected.

Are you really that clueless. Port just lost to Calvert Hall a top ranked team 12 to 10. They are a very good team loaded with talent that will do well.

Not his job to "Suit up."
His function is to get the truck loaded, not to load the truck.

don't forget he does not have to pump the gas, just make sure their is gas in the truck and he doesn't have to drive the truck just make sure the truck gets driven, he does not have to know how to get there just has to make sure the GPS is in the truck.

Not sure it would be much different. A little shuffling in order. St. A ahead of Cham. Pequa and SE neck and neck. GC lower, SN lower. Guess connetquot needs to be in there. Am I missing any? Mike Quick will adress this this week on MSG Varsity

I wanted to put Manhasset in there... badly. Even though they have 3 losses, they play against the best competition around. Two of their losses came against national traditional powerhouse Boys Latin and undefeated Conneticut team, Darien. Losing to an elite team doesn't make you bad.

St. Anthonys above Northport and Lynbrook I can see. At least a valid argument can be made for it. But Connetquot at 6???? That's funny. You must be the coach. Ward Melville is still a top 5 team and there isn't a person in the country (outside of Connetquot) that would disagree. A fluke loss to an unproven Connetquot team doesn't drop them to 10 (or even below Connetquot). They are just too strong. Don't get me wrong, Conn is having a nice little season, but they need to win out to be considered a top 10 team and can't be before then. Set up a game with Yorktown. See how that goes.

Massive matchup tonight. #2 in the nation, Massapequa, squares off against #4 in the nation, Syosset!!

Come on now how about this.

1) Massapequa
2) Syosset
3) Chaminade
4) St. Anthony's
5) Northport
6) Connectquot
7) Lynbrook
8) Smithtown East
9) Hills East
10) Ward Melville

Hon men. Carey, SWR, Smithtown West, CSH, West Islip, Sachem N.

Until tonight's game. If loser is Syo they go to #4. If Masapequa loses they just go to #2.

If a team beats another team, head to head, they should be ranked higher. That is fair--from --WM parent. So, I have no issue with the number 10 slot.

We play chammy next week and then roll into May with a not great remainder of teams to play.

I suspect these rankings mean very little to the boys so I for one am happy to wait till the year is over before ranking teams. If quot or Northport can win in the playoffs against WM, SW, SE, Sachem N, and represent Suffolk against Syosset/Massapequa, they deserve being ranked higher.

That is the game suffolk teams should be watching tonight to see who is the likely Nassau class A opponent...

There are so many great teams on the island. Some of the ones won't even be in the discussion soon. Once the playoffs start, teams like Hills, Connetquot and Smithtown will fade away.

That's a fairly accurate list. I could see some movement in St. Anthonys, though. I think they're still playing like a top 5 team. I think I'd place them ahead of Ward Melville considering they lost to Connetquot.

I'll go with:
1) Massapequa
2) Syosset
3) Chaminade
4) Ward Melville
5) St. Anthony's
6) Lynbrook
7) Manhasset
8) Carey
9) Smithtown East
10) Northport

This one is pretty close with level of competition considered.

So you think that the 4th ranked team in the nation is the 5th best team on LI? Just wanted to be clear.

Syosset handed Northport it's only loss, handed CSH it's only loss and handled Chaminade in a scrimmage they also have the highest computer rating

Keep in mind, NP played that game without their #1 f/o man, a difference maker.

Syosset has played their entire season without a returning starting defense man D1 commit and their number one offensive middy also a D1 commit - no problem you play with what you have dressed on that day

10 goal difference maker? Why does this list have WM ranked higher than two teams that bead them?

Give credit for what teams have done. WM hasn't done enough for top 5 on the island as of now.

Neither has Connetquot. You really believe that they're the 5th best team on LI?? Seriously?? They're not. Not yet. If they beat NP they may be top 10. And just because a team beats another team once does not make them better. By your logic the Knicks are a better team than the Hawks because they beat them two weeks ago. Please.

No need to search the entire country, there are many here in Suffolk who do not believe that WM should be considered one of the Top 5 teams on the Island.

Hopefully the WM Players are not as arrogant as you. Based on what you said above, WM should be considered a Top 10 team regardless of their record. What has WM done to be considered a Top Team.

1) Massapequa
2) Syosset
3) Chaminade
4) St. Anthony's
5) Northport
6) Connectquot
7) Lynbrook
8) Smithtown East
9) Hills East
10) Ward Melville

Hon men. Carey, SWR, Smithtown West, CSH, West Islip, Sachem N.

Until tonight's game. If loser is Syo they go to #4. If Masapequa loses they just go to #2.

So wrong, the kids do care and follow lax power - net play - msgv.

Np or quot does not have to wait to be ranked higher than teams they beat. Wake up people. They beat them - done. No SOS needed. Will Syo be ranked over Pequa no.

Pequa
Syo
Chammy
St A
Quot
Nport

I picked the WM loss and I'm not from Northport. Played both. Sorry NP gets the nod. And I dont like them... I like WM, but you just start to slow... And you asked earlier yes Northport would have whooped Yorktown.

Please.

Connetquot is not ready to be ranked that high. Well see after NP. Syosset could have easily won the game yesterday. They controlled most of it. Went off sides durine overtime to force a turnover. They can easily win next round. They are equal with Pequa. Hope they pull it off

I agree NP is better than Quot but I did put quot over them by one. Undefeated means something. Doing what you need means something. I also only put syo,at 2 that was a quality loss. WM is a great team but didn't do what they had to. Not top 5 until you prove yourself to do so. Yorktown would be spanked by most of that top 5. Again wm you start to slow. And who cares where you are now it is at the end that matters. Give the teams that deserve the ranking now there time. The race isn't top 5 now it is who is top 20.

You know I have my thoughts

Disagree. They are getting hot at the right time and playing great lax. They are better than Smithtown, Northport, Connetquot right now.

No. But they've never played my undefeated 5th grade PAL team either. That doesn't mean they're not better.

I have seen GC play SYO and Mass and I have seen NP play Syo - based on those games that I have seen I would say NP and GC would be a very close game and like most of these games this year F/O and Goalie play would determine the outcome at this point you can not say GC would beat them but rather that they could beat them. Instead of GC worrying about Suffolk A's they really need to worry about Nassau B's for the time being. Having seen every Nassau A, CSH, SET, WM, NP, Chaminade I still think Lynbrook is the best team on LI....IMHO they would give MASS and SYO a run for their money

GC may have an ugly slow offense but their Defense is superb and I think will keep it close enough for the offense to have enough moments to win the big games. Two of their defenders are not only amongst the best on the island but the best anywhere. having two of that quality is a big deal in high school lacrosse.

Game was competitive, would not say WM in control until the very end. Both teams will need to tighten it up if they want to win a championship. Chammy just a bit more careless with the ball at times. WM Goalie and #10 both looked very good. Do not think either team played to their potential but is was a hard fought competitive game. WM can win the County but will need to bring more fire power if they want to win the Long Island Championship and compete for The State Title.

Again..... 10 goal difference ? I don't think so. The f/o being there wasn't going to close up the gap that much .
And again if you want to keep saying who wasn't there then every team has same problem every game, Syosset missing injured starting defense and middies all season too
You play with what you have , no excuses

From my vantage, WM was pretty much in control all game. Agree it was competitive, but never had the feeling that Chammy was going to make any run...

Agree on firepower but Chammy has a pretty good D. I think there only loss was pequa by a couple early in the season. So, again, how do ranking change?

WM losses to both Northport and quot by a goal. The quot game was double OT and in Northport, two last minute goals won the day for that squad.

If I were ranking, would move WM up a few spots (with Northport above WM, quot one below WM) and Chammy falls further down a few...rest stays as is.

GC worries about Suffolk (and Nassau) As and out-of-state programs early in the season so when it is time to worry about Nassau Bs (now) they are prepared and ready. Next two weeks will answer this question.

How can you move Wm above Quot, a team that is undefeated (I don't care the schedule)and beat them.

St Anthony's last 3 out of 4 games will tell where they belong. Worried off The Jerico last 4 games are brutal. Should be fun to watch it all play out.

Schedule matters to everyone that does not live in the Connetquot district. Ward Melville is a better team that lost in 2 overtimes. The playoffs will be quick for Connetquot.

Connetquot plays Sachem North, Bayshore and Northport in the next week. With the exception of WM, they've had a cupcake schedule. If they win out, I'll say their top 5 on the island behind Mass, Syosset, Lynbrook and Cham.

If quot wins they deserve to move up, not sure how the poster is putting chammy in top 5. Did you see the game yesterday?

Chammy a good team, but not as good as WM...so says the box score. No overtime needed

That's a funny list! After pequa, you have a mess going on! Port and Cham for instance belong much further down, as will quot once they lose. Lynbrook and East move up.

And who cares where you are now it is at the end that matters. Give the teams that deserve the ranking now there time. The race isn't top 5 now it is who is top 20.

You know I have my thoughts
Wm
Hhhe
Lynbrook
Carey
Smith E (I think west will beat them)

Gc
Whitman
Many asset
Port Wash
SWR

Csh
Sachem north
West Islip
hhhw

Mt Sinai/Bay Shore/harbor fields

What was that you were saying, West will be East,ha! Guess you should not be ranking teams

Carey not a very good team. Lost to a weak Wantagh team.

This list needs to be updated. NG as it stands. Carey should not be here? SE should be 1st? Bay Shore?

this list was the schools from 6 -20 with 3 added as honorable mention. Substitute Sachem East for Bay Shore, why because they beat them. See how that works.

Here is my latest

Pequa
Syo
Nport
Quot
WM
Cham
St Ant
Port Wash
Smith E
Hhhe
Lynbrook
SWR
Whitman
West Islip
Manhasset
GC
Csh
Sachem north
hhhw
Sachem East
Mt Sinai
harbor fields

That's a funny list! After pequa, you have a mess going on! Port and Cham for instance belong much further down, as will quot once they lose. Lynbrook and East move up.

I agree Lynbrook could be higher just couldn't see where. Northport belongs a top the list for now so does Quot. Unless you are talking Port Washington. Which East do you speak of ? HHH or Sachem?

GC is very beatable. They are down but will still win the conference. You can't say enough about good coaching. Other than GC that conference is up for grabs. Would not be surprised to see a complete mix up from GC down.

They could beat some and at a scrimmage they have. Not 90% not even close but definitely could beat some

GC is a very young team. At any give time you will be playing against a 9th grader and bunch of 10th graders making up half of the kids on the field.

Are you kidding me. They lost 1 game by 1 point, to the number 1 team in Suffolk (I agree Pequa and Syo 1&2 on LI). Why do you hate so much? They should be a Suffolk top 2 some people may say put SE as 2 behind Northport, which is semantics and would make them 3rd in Suffolk and 5 on LI.

The second round of Suffolk is where it will all start. 5 games in Suffolk Playoffs (??) to determine a champion will be what the season is made of. Hearing lots of young kids making an impact in the league, should be a great time these next 2 years. For now does anyone see any surprises in the last week.

Never count out those WI lions!

The real fun starts Saturday morning.

amazing how Lynbrook gets ZERO respect. If GC were the returning Long Island Champs and were undefeated they'd be ranked at the top. We will see though, just such a bias its not funny.

Lynbrook would get smoked by P'qua and Syosset and several other Nassau country school. Lynbrook is having a great season and I'm happy for them but they only have 1 quality 1 against Manhasset and Manhasset is having a down year.

Lynbrook would get smoked by P'qua and Syosset and several other Nassau country school. Lynbrook is having a great season and I'm happy for them but they only have 1 quality 1 against Manhasset and Manhasset is having a down year.

Lyn scrimmaged Syo and it was a one goal difference - while scrimmages don't mean everything they are an indication that Lynbrook belongs in the conversation - and no they would not get smoked by either team.

The Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Rankings are from Monday 5/5. That's as current as it gets. Lynbrook is in the same boat as Connetquot. They are both having solid seasons, but they are just playing the schedule they were given. It's not their fault; however, there are probably 9 or 10 really bad teams on each of those schedules. That is absolutely a factor. If they want national consideration they will need to set up some games with some traditional powerhouse programs. Beating up on teams like Brentwood and Pat-Med are not going to further the cause at all.

Yes, and Ward Melville is #5 and Smithtown East is #6... take that for what it is.

That makes sense. Can't beat chumps like that and expect respect. You dudes gotta go find some studs to play otherwise you're like D1 Georgia Southern football going undefeated in the Sun Belt Conference and wondering why no one is considering you for national college football playoffs. You gotta be good enough to take on a challenge.

And St. Anthony's beat Syosset in a scrimmage. What's it all mean? Nothing but we are lucky to see the game played at such a high level.

Did St Anthonys really beat Syosset or was it a scrimmage and Syosset played it like it was just that...... A scrimmage.

no man up - very liberal substitution - they wet man up and man down for 15 minutes in between 3rd and 4th.

it was all good - real game would be very close

Game was competitive, would not say WM in control until the very end. Both teams will need to tighten it up if they want to win a championship. Chammy just a bit more careless with the ball at times. WM Goalie and #10 both looked very good. Do not think either team played to their potential but is was a hard fought competitive game. WM can win the County but will need to bring more fire power if they want to win the Long Island Championship and compete for The State Title.

How can you move Wm above Quot, a team that is undefeated (I don't care the schedule)and beat them.

St Anthony's last 3 out of 4 games will tell where they belong. Worried off The Jerico last 4 games are brutal. Should be fun to watch it all play out.

Friars got through those 4 games 4-0. (Chaminade, Don Bosco, Darien and New Canaan). Now the championship game vs the Flyers on Wednesday.

Yes great job for both schools. Shame that there is only a few good schools in the catholic league. But it is great both Friars and Flyers can branch out to other schools.

WM 17-HHHE 1

WM looked good although the coach should have gotten in some of the seniors for their last home game. Instead he lets a few freshman run around for the last 8 minutes.

We all know he will play the starters throughout most of the game, but how does he not get a few seniors in at the end? Doesn't all the time these boys spent over two or three years matter???

It was never even a game last night, the goal that HHHE is credited was scored by WM goalie...

I am not saying that kids should get equal time and I am not saying the kids that played all game aren't deserving. They are clearly deserving of their play time. Just seems to me in a 17-1 game that was a blow out at the end of the first q, coach could have shown a little loyalty and respect to the team and let a few seniors play.

Say what you want about the catholics and their position to not move up freshman and sophs, but the system clearly is fair. On all of LI there are only a very small handful of Freshman that can actually contribute.

To stick some of them in with 8 minutes left in a blow out to run around while junior and senior kids that have been loyal to the program stand and watch is just sad.

Take note that they lost to Smithtown West, not East. Not a bad team by any stretch, but not a team discussed in any rankings outside of Smithtown. We had a similar situation in our high school on senior day. All the parents were there and many kids didn't see the field. Even the players were distraught that were playing watching their buddies on the sidelines. I sat with one mom who couldn't hold back the tears she felt for her son.

Don't think the kids who don't get the chance don't work their [lacrosse] off to get better!! No clue what you are talking about...what an ignorant statement by someone who probably has coaches on speed dial!! Kids are not given the chance to prove themselves. I am sure you have been there all season and watched. Multiple games that were blowouts with minimal substitution. Even the pros know to sub out the starters so they don't get injured in a meaningless game. What a jackass you are! Again, another parent all about their kid...so tired of it. Don't worry I am sure you have been on the phone with the coaches already about getting your kid plenty of PT over the summer. Believe me my kid probably works 10 times harder than your kid and never gets the chance because I am not up the coaches [lacrosse]!! Play the seniors!!!

To many coaches are always looking at the future. In my town the coaches never think the team is good enough so they are constantly preparing for the future by playing younger players over the upper classmen that are better and stronger than them and can help the team much more right now. The days of being loyal to the players are long over.

I agree do want to work with younger kids. Can't agree with you on better and stronger. In a district like WM bench goes deep. Coaches have them all year long because kids play with them in the summer, so there is plenty of time to develop. No excuses...WM like many districts have too much politicking and closed door deals to get kids playing time. So the bottom line is be loyal to players that have been with you for years in a 17-1 game!

Really? coaches play the best players. Parents are not at practice everyday to watch. The programs that year in year out go deep into playoffs know what they are doing. Stop crying on a public forum about playing time. Sports are not always fair...just like life.

Completely agree. No one is taking anything away from the starters. They play because they are the best, end of story. However, the WM coach owes the older boys that have worked their [lacrosse] off for years every day the chance to end their HS career on the field in a 17-1 home playoff game. And no disrespect to the fresh or sophs he put in their place, they are all very good players.

Coach is just a man thinking he is building a dynasty, but WM program is already respected far and wide. the senior kids that showed up every day, ran all of the drills, all of the sprints, in the rain and snow deserved a little loyalty. Was it really too much to ask when you were up 17-1 with 8 minutes left?

Worse than all of the above, the only reason this team isn't undefeated is the coach. The only reason this team is not likely to win the states is the coach.

there is one position on the field where they can't compete with their seniors, but the coach just can't see the importance. In most blow out games this year it never mattered, but in the two losses, he should be able to clearly see the pattern and plan for it. If his past history is any indication, the team will lose to either Nport or SME and it will all be based on that one position.

To Really, we agree sports are not fair. But you are not seeing the point. We all agree the best play. But at 17-1, why not show a little respect to the kids on their last home game?

If it was 12-5, he needs to protect the lead, but at 17-1? Please come back with another "stop crying comment". That is the standard response for all you internet tough guys. Makes me laugh every time. Would some day love to see what all these tough guys look like...

If you are talking fogo, we do not have one that can compete with elite fogo's, Nport & SE have the 2 best. The coach has tried many during games
& we dont have a good one. This was evident from the 1st game of the season.

Wow. You must be a real pleasure on the sideline. I’m sure that your kid is the best at his position. What a [lacrosse] you are.

What's wrong with the coach? They always seem to get the blame.

You know what your problem is, coach. Don't make me air it here. Your days are numbered.

So NOW are we done with Connetquot's greatness? Winning one game in the playoffs against the lowest seed is meaningless. They had a nice season. They beat up on a lot of bad teams and played a good game against WM. But most coaches and fans knew they werent going to make it far in the playoffs. Take note that they lost to Smithtown West, not East. Not a bad team by any stretch, but not a team discussed in any rankings outside of Smithtown. Maybe now they'll realize that great players will only take you so far when your coach is not qualified.

Go ahead, air it, make some crap up you coach wannabe! That way we can all laugh at how little you know about the sport. The team had a great run and you want to call out the coach. Too funny for words.

That's ridiculous! First of all, that obviously wasn't him on this thread, and second of all, his days aren't numbered after the season they just had, and he's a well-liked teacher

The sad thing now is you have to play summer ball for the HS coaches and also raise money to help fund the coaches salaries. You pay all that money and they still won't play kids in a game like that.

Shame on the AD and the school board for allowing this to occur!!!

Actually he's not well liked by the faculty or administration. And an early bounce from the playoffs provides job security? All he did was best an 8 seed. That's an impressive season to you? Bad coaching and preparation is revealed in the post season.
